IPhone 5, emailed photos or videos to pc appear upside down

Emailing photos or videos taken with my iPhone5, about half the time the photos or videos appear upside-down or sideways on pc's using Outlook, though this never happens in email on other Apple devices.  This occurs on many different types of pc's.  Any suggestions or explanations?

Probably a problem with MS Outlook. I have seen that before using outlook. Never have that problem using any other mail program.

Here are links to four short MOV files showing the four orientations for the iPhone 4S. I had to upload them to DropBox for you as all of my available Cloud based mail programs choked on saving or sending these little video files.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7584570/IMG_0064.MOV
I usually record hockey games in Landscape mode with the Home Button of the iPhone on the left side with the screen facing me. That is the mov file IMG_0063.MOV
Apple's QuickTime Player displays it correctly, while the VLC player, which ignores exif flags plays it upside down. So does the Plex Media streamer ignore the flag, so does the thunderbird mail app ignore the flag, and so on. Adobe looks at the exif flags so they get it right.
My movies are of four Post It Notes, each one describing the location of the Home Button. Take a series of four pictures oriented like my test MOV files , then take 4 short MOV files of the same iPhone orientation. If the results are "misoriented" then the software you are using to look at them is ignoring the orientation flages.
For more detail of this subject look at  http://www.impulseadventure.com/photo/exif-orientation.html
    JPEG Rotation and EXIF Orientation
Digital Cameras with orientation sensors allow auto-rotation of portrait images. Unfortunately, support for this feature is not widespread or consistently applied.
    Digital Cameras with Orientation Sensors
Many newer digital cameras (both dSLR and Point & Shoot digicams) have a built-in orientation sensor. Virtually all Canon and Nikon digital cameras have an orientation sensor. The output of this sensor is used to set the EXIF orientation flag in the image file's metatdata to reflect the positioning of the camera with respect to the ground. Canon calls their sensor the "Intelligent Orientation" sensor. It is presumably a 2-axis tilt sensor, allowing 4 possible orientations to be detected (shown in the left side of the diagram in the link above).

  • When emailing as photo or video it sometimes shows upside down or sideways. How do I fix that?

How to take and send a video and pictures that are not sideways or upside down when they are opened by email.

    More like NOT EXACTLY @MikeOtown.
So here is a little more information and it still has to do with Apple missing something in iOS5 and the EXIF encoding when they introduced the volume shutter release function.
I ran a new test as follows. I took 4 consecutive pictures of the same subject, a piece of paper with the word test on it.
First image - landscape with volume button on the top using volume button
Second image - landscape with volume button on the bottom and using the volumen button
Third image - landscape with volume button on the top using the on-screen shutter release
Fourth image - landscape with volume button on the bottom using the on-screen shutter release
I sent all 4 images from the iPhone in one email. (Yes you can do that now in iOS5) to an Exchange Server hosted email account that connects to my Mac running outlook and also to a gmail account.
    Results:
Outlook (Exchange Server) on MBP 15" running Lion 10.7.2. The images all arrived right side up in the email. I saved them to the desktop. Viewing them from the desktop in Finder, they are all right side up. Using Preview they are all right side up. Opening with Photoshop they are all rightside up.
Gmail (Viewed in Safari and Firefox). In the email the thumbnails all appeared right side up. Clicking on view images 1 and 3 appeared upside down in the viewer. Downloading all the images to the Mac and viewing them in preview etc. they were all rightside up.
Gmail (viewed in Outlook) on MBP. The images all arrived right side up in the email. I saved them to the desktop. Viewing them from the desktop in Finder, they are all right side up. Using Preview they are all right side up. Opening with Photoshop they are all rightside up. Saving all the images to the Mac and viewing them in preview they were all rightside up.
Outlook (Exchange Server) on PC. Images 1 and 3 arrived upside down.
Gmail (Viewed in IE). Images 1 and 3 arrived upside down.
The issue arises when the volume button is located on the top of the iPhone and again does not seem to be apparent natively on a Mac or iOS platform that I am running.

  • Photos taken from iPhone appears upside down in windows explorer

Photos taken from my iPhone appears upside down in windows explorer....

Hi The problem I think ou are experiencing is because of the way you turn the phone to take pics. With the phone vertical (home button at the bottom) the pics you take will appear the right way up in all applications, the problem will occur when you hold the phone horizontally. If you hold the phone with the home button to the right the pics you take will appear the right way up in all applications, if you hold the phone with the home button to the left the pics will appear the right way up in the camera roll and some other apps that understand the iphone camera rotation but in other apps (iphoto and windows explorer are two) these photos will appear upside down.
    Hope this helps

keep getting a pop up box asking me to download photo and video, many boxes appear saying the same thing . I have no devices connected to download anything. I want this to not happen or appear.
This will just keep appearing when I am online.Using Firefox latest version I just installed Window7 from Vista. never happened prior. Windows live Photo Gallery is usually my default to open, but that is from a phone device connected to my computer.

Usually "Flame" does this (a virus that should have been auto destructed 2 weeks ago). It could be another virus or worm. My advice, FIRST scan your computer with antivirus (completely). Don't use free antiviruses. They are not providing enough protection. Then delete all temp. files and browsing history. Remove and reinstall Firefox. (don't install it automatically: ask for custom install at the beginning). It is much better to download it again from www.mozilla.org because your actual version might be corrupted by the virus (IF ANY VIRUS IS FOUND). Anyway you won't lose downloading it again.
PS: Windows 7 includes a very useful tool to scan your PC. Windows Defender. Run it along with the antivirus.

The iPhone saves its pictures with an orientation setting. Windows software tends to ignore it.

  • I have an iphone 4s when I take pictures and send them to my computer or someone elses computer they so times appear upside down. Is it because I have windows? Can I do anything about this?

I have an iphone 4s when I take pictures and send them to my computer or someone else they appear upside down. I have a window operating system. Is there anything I can do to reverse the pictures?

OK, here's the explanation.  When you take a picture, the iPhone knows what orientation it is in (portrait, landscape, etc.) and adds that information to the picture's EXIF data so it knows which side is up.  Apple devices can decode this information and show the picture right side up when it is viewed.  However, Windows computers cannot do this.  They are not capable of decoding the orientation information added by the iPhone, so they are displayed in a default orientation (which may not be right side up).
This only happens on Windows machines, and unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it, except use the rotation buttons in Windows picture view to orient the photo correctly.

Thanks again. I tried channel 13 and it seemed to work better, with less dropouts (albeit not perfect) but sadly my slightly ageing laptop wouldn't recognise the network at all with the Hub set to that channel, so I had to switch it back to 11!
Will try the factory reset at some point to see if that improves things.
I have the same issue with my iPad when streaming videos...like the issue posted on ‎25-04-2014 18h36 by Steve.
Steve - Can you kinldy clarify how you resolved the problem finally.
I was infact planning to change the iPad or sell it off due to this recurring problem.

  • Unable to Email Photos or Video

I have a iPhone 3GS w/ 3.0.1 software loaded. Whenever I take a picture and try to send it via email to a known, good email account, I get an error basically telling me the "email account is not valid". I can both send and receive regular email to the email account and the email account is saved as a "contact". The email w/video or pictures attached will just sit in the "outbox" and never send but regular "test" emails or "replies" to the same account are sent just fine. This happens whether or not I'm using WiFi or 3G. My phone is NOT jailbroke and I haven't loaded any weird or "unauthorized" apps which would hinder my iPhone's ability to send photos. It worked at one time and then suddenly it quit. I've recently did a backup and restore and it still doesn't work. Any help?

Your best bet might be to restore your iPhone, backing it up before of course. See if that fixes the issue.
If not I would put in a support ticket to Apple.
    Good luck.

  • After installing iOs5 onto my iPhone, all my photos and videos were deleted? How do I get them back?

I got the iOs5 update for my iPhone and I just checked my videos and photos in the camera roll and there is none there. It's all gone. Why? iTunes didn't ask me if I wanted to save my photos or what not, it just asked me if it wanted to back up my apps and stuff, which I said yes. Is there a way I can get my pictures and videos back?

Some conspiracy is going on . I upgraded my iphone and before upgrade, obviously iTunes backed up my iphone. After upgrade, lost all my contacts and I feel the icloud *****. Trying to contact apple asks me to pay for support. Isn't this annoying, on one side they keep reminding you to upgrade to new ios and then when you upgrade, you loose everything. Not happy right now

  • Email photos or video from camera roll

Aside from some items mentioned previously in this forum, ie. signal strength droping based on the way it is held, which i am also noticing, i am having one problem and maybe a setup item i need. When i attempt to email a video i made on my i4, it says it compresses it, then i put in the email address, but it never sends it. I also tried just a photo in camera roll and it doesn't email either. I have done several resets etc. Is there a setting i need? Any other suggestions? I always did this with my 3g.
    Thanks

that is where my emails were stuck. i reviewed my smtp settings and they were ok, but the password wasn't there, it didn't carry over when restored from my 3g. going to the email account and putting in my password and immediately my outbox sent all the emails that were stacked up. i missed it first time checking, settings, mail, selected my email account and saw my incoming pop server and it showed the password field still filled in. my smtp had correct information and then realized i needed to select the advanced to see the outgoing screen where the password is kept, and it was blank.

  • IPhone 5, emailing photos

Can anyone tell me what to do in order to have the phone "ask" what size picture I want to send?  It used to ask me when I emailed a pic, but now it doesn't..I have tried searching here but can't find anything.  Thanks for the ****

When emailing from your laptop click email in iPhoto, then when it opens a new email, check the bottom of the email and you will see a note saying what size the photo is in, change the size to actual size again.
