Hey Linard Michael,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing error 4005 when attempting to restore your iPhone. The following resource provides a potential solution for this error:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
Check USB connections
Related errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response,” and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, thentroubleshooting your security software.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
- Use another USB cable.
- Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
- Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
- Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
- Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you checked your connections and are still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues.
Thanks,
Matt M.

I thought I had successfully converted from iPhone 3g to 4s could not connect to att phone service.  To reinstall, I reset to iPhone 4s to restore factory settings. software downloaded successfully, but after install completes I get a message that iPhone 4s could not restore (error 1).  Followed by message that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and that I can restore original setting bu clicking Restore.  Doing that reats the problem  After 10 attempts, I am frustrated.  Itunes no longer shows capacity, software version or serial number for iPhone .  Lists those as n/a.  Need help

Unfortunately the restore did not solve the connectivity problem, but it made it even worse. The phone was not connecting to the carrier at all, constantly showing "Searching...". I tried another restore, this time it failed on three different computers (one of them was a fresh iTunes installation)... Strange, that it worked once.
@Unshaven: Multiple combinations of Power and Home button did not work either. Seems to be bricked now. I think I have to return it to Apple ...
Btw. Windows iTunes showes some log errors like 'getenv radio-error' failed and DoesDriverNameMatchDeviceID failed.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

i also had this problem with my iPhone, i put it in the dock, iTunes came up on my MacBook, then the iPhone restarted a white screen came up for about 25 seconds then an Apple came up, then the connect to iTunes logo appeared, I was puzzled as to why this had happened since i'm extremely careful & certainly would not ever jailbreak it, because its against Apple's EULA. So i click restore expecting everything to work, then I get something like "iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone "iPhone" an unknown error accrued error 21. Then i put it in DUF mode, the screen went white again, looked like the firmware was installing then that failed & now its displaying error 2001, what shall I do

  • Iphone will not restore Error 21

Here is a little background to this problem. I had an original iPhone that the Wi-Fi quit working on this past week. The phone was 2 1/2 months out of warranty and Apple would not, or could not do anything to help me other than sell me a new 3G. I just purchased the 3G tonight (16g black) and they activated it at the store for me. I made a phone call on the way home and all is good.
I get home and was going to check to make sure the Wi-Fi on the phone worked when all of the sudden the screen goes to the Apple logo and then starts freaking out. A lot of text flies across the screen saying something about a PANIC and Darwin Kernel. I read online all sorts of issues about this, before I finally come across how to start the phone in recovery mode. I finally get it started in recovery mode and hook it up to my PowerBook G4. I click RESTORE and it gives me this message:
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error ocurred (21).
I literally had this phone for 1 hour! My original iPhone was a Christmas gift from my wife and it bothered me that it was no longer working, but then to have this happen immediately is sad. Can anyone help? Does anyone have any information about this error or how I can get my phone restored, or should I just take what appears to be a lemon back to the Apple Store?

  • Will not restore (error 1604 w/ battery 1611 w/out battery)

    Ok I have a faulty iPhone4.
Two weeks ago it ended up in the washing machine... not a full cycle because I realized it a few minutes in that it was in a pocket and I couldn't find it.
So I took it out of the washing machine (it shut itself off, btw), and I dried it with a towel and a blow dryer on cool. I headed out to the store and got a bag of dry white rice. When I got home, I took apart the iphone and put it in a bag of rice (known trick to dry out wet cellphones - works for many people).
Now I tried getting it working again in a few days, but I have the same result, so back in the rice it went.
Now today is the two week anniversary of this event, so I figure if I can't get it to work, it's hosed. So here's what happens...
Without the battery, if you plug it into the PC, the screen comes on and it shows the new iTunes icon along with a usb cable pointing to it. iTunes detects the phone in recovery mode and attempts to update it. When it goes to update, it reboots the phone maybe 3 times. You see the screen flash, then apple logo, then the connect to itunes screen. So that happens a few times and thats it. iTunes will say error 1611, the phone remains on the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
So with the Battery inserted, it's a different experience. First of all, it's much harder to turn on. I'm not sure how I got it on, but it was some combination of holding home and the power buttons. So it shows the apple logo, then a usb cable with an arrow pointing to iTunes. Again iTunes detects the phone in recovery mode so I click Restore. After iTunes extracts the software and does "preparing iPhone for restore", the iphone screen flashes white then black, and then shuts off. In the meant time I hear the Windows 7 device connect / disconnect sound a few times. So iTunes effectively shuts off the iPhone, and then I take it after awhile it times out and presents an error 1604.
Any idea's? Is this thing hosed? The screen is flawless. Right now I'm using an old slow as a snail 3G. I was able to use electrical tape and finagle the microSIM in the correct position in the 3G's sim card tray, so I'm not without phone service. Just the 3G is so slow and the VNC program doesn't even work on it (crashes- I think it doesn't have enough memory). Anyway I'd love to get the iphone4 back to life, it's amazing how much you miss it when it's gone.
Here's some of iPhoneUpdater 15.log dated today.

Oh that's too bad. Broken iPhone4's on e-bay are going for $300 and up. That would of paid for the $199 replacement.
Well I have to decide what to do. There's also an online store you can ship it to, and for $140 they fix it. I think it needs a new battery, and maybe the power supply regulator/charging circuit and NVRAM chip.
It won't take a charge and I'm not sure if that's due to the battery or the charging circuit itself, because I don't have another iPhone4 battery to test. I think the NVRAM may be faulty, because iTunes simply cannot write to it. It's so confused that it fails to enter DFU or an update state.
Sadly everything else looks great. The "plug into iTunes" screen is crystal clear, just like a brand new phone. No sign of water damage at all in the screen.
So I'll have to evaluate what the next step is. Pay a third party to fix it, or drive an hour to an apple store and pay $199 along with surrendering the broken iPhone for a new one.

Hi @rchangel - Thanks for the ideas...
Yes - it won't let you install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine.
I've had a cursory look at the SP1 release notes, and couldn't spot anything vital - what critical stuff do you know of in SP1?
I don't want to have to go through all the pain of setting up VM's, reinstalling iTunes, getting all my album art back in etc. (though I could, as I do have Win7 pro). I've also heard that running iTunes in Windows 7 compatibility mode might help. Can anyone confirm whether that actually works?
I think it's in Apple's gift to fix this issue, given that they say that they support Windows 7. So far I've had no feedback from a mail I sent to Apple, and the number of users reporting this problem keeps going up and up.
I want Apple to recognise that there is a problem, and then I want them to fix it.
