IPhone 5 pre-order, please help!

I preordered my iphone the day after preorders started (so I won't be getting an email tonight obviously). However, what if I just came into Best Buy and wanted to buy it right then and there? Could I cancel the pre order and will there be penalties?
I've been reading that some pre orders won't be in until beginning of October. I've also been reading that a customer has 3 days to pick it up after notice. Well, what if you are going across the country for a trip and you can't pick it up during those 3 days??!

Good questions all the exhibit the customer support that Best Buy offers its customers. I used to thing it was great until well at least solidly good until how I was treated tonight.
There is competition and when I can I will look much closer at them instead of running over to blindly buy stuff from best buy.
That blind loyalty had to do with points and the feeling that I would be treated well. That has been disproven.
Oh well sorry for the rant but good points.

If you are the original owner of the phone and know the Apple ID and password that were used to activate it originally, and if you have an existing backup to restore from, you can force it into recovery mode (which will completely erase it) and restore it as explained here: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. When you do you will encounter activation lock, and will have to provide the ID and password used to activate it originally in order to activate it again. If you can't, you won't be able to activate and use it.

Only the Apple ID that was used to enable "Find My iPhone" on the device can be used to bypass Activation Lock.

The iPad receives Text Messages through Apple's iMessage feature. Make sure this is turned on on your phone. Also, text messages received at your phone number are not shared with the iPad. Make sure that iMessage texts are being sent to your EMAIL ADDRESS

I am having the SAME exact problem! Except instead of lock button broken it's my home button so I can't do the whole "put in recovery mode" deal. My screen only says "tap the home button 3 times" and it has my screen locked until I hit the home button but since it is broken I can't get in my phone at all. I have all of my work info in my phone so I'm screwed and can't get any help. PLEASE let me know if you find a way around this...!!!

Help with what? As you've discovered, a phone cannot be tracked if it's offline.
Put it into Lost Mode and hope for the best.

This most often means that you previously hacked your phone to downgrade the iOS or jailbreak, and the modem baseband (firmware) was altered. In that case, SOL - there is no way to restore or update to a stock iOS again.
There are some "alternative" methods that will get the phone out of recovery mode and usable again, but it will remain in a hacked and unstable state. Google to find these.

You need to make your own ringtones in iTunes then sync them to your phone. Follow the directions here:

Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars; select the account in question and check your settings. There are two separate settings for mail, incoming mail server for receiving mail, and SMTP for sending mail.
It could be that the mail process is stuck. Before doing as I said above, double-tap the home button to open the multi-tasking list. Locate the mail app and swipe upwards on the app thumbnail to force closed. Then do a reset on the phone, holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone reboots, then open the mail app and see if you receive your mail. If you receive an error message, make note of it and come back.

You're going to want to force it in recover mode thent o restore the device, unplug it from the computer, hold down the home button replug it back in intil you see the Itunes symbol with an arrow pointing towards it

The iPhone 5 requires iTunes 10.7 or later and iTunes 10.7 requires OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). If your profile is correct it looks like you need to update your OS X on you Mac. You can contact Apple and purchase the software from them.
