IPhone 5 Rapid Battery Drain - No Standby

Hi folks - I have a 64GB iPhone 5.  When wifi is enabled and I am at work (this doesn't occur on any other wifi network that I have yet found) the phone will not go into standby mode (though the screen turns off) as evidenced by the Usage and Standby times being almost identical.  In approximately 3 hours, when wifi is enabled, my phone will go from 100% to below 20% and is quite hot to the touch. The wifi network at my work is WPA2 encrypted, wireless N and G, and 2 SSID's are broadcast for the same network (to support staff whose wireless laptops haven't been switched to the new SSID - don't get me started - it's a stupid setup).  Anyways, the wifi quality is dodgy at past and even though the signal remains strong, internet connectivity frequently drops.  I suspect that the wireless router is defective but I have no control over that and have been ignored by the IT folks.
To make matters even more interesting, my iPad 4 connects to the same network at work and the battery doesn't drain and the device goes into standby without issue.
If I disable wifi on the phone while at work, the phone goes into standby and the Usage actually reflects the amount of time the device is actually used (a fraction of the total time).
I have reset network settings on the phone, reflashed 6.01 and restored from backup, disabled location services, etc... but to no avail.
Do you think there is a defect with the phone in its ability to handle the dodgy wifi at my work when the iPad manages it fine or is there something else that I could do to stay connected to the wifi without the phone chewing through battery, heating up, and not sleeping?
Thanks folks!

Hi sjfwhite!
I've got exactly the same problem with my iPhone 5 (32GB). I talked to the support over the phone and they offerd me to send it in for service. It ended up that I got an new iPhone 5. But the battery just drains for no reason. Talked to the support again, service ...again.
The apple-support tested to send me a diagnostics test. They coundn't see a problem.
After all test I've done myself, I think it is the cellular network that is the problem.
If I put the backside of the iPhone to my ear I hear a sound that is a very high tone. Then when I turned the cellular network of, it didn't sound at all. And the battery works just fine.
So maybe it could work if you tested a new nano sim.
Because, the service seems not to work, or as you said wait for an upgrade.

  • Iphone 6 battery drain during standby

Hello.  So I've had an IPhone 6 for several months now which is still under warranty.  A few days ago, I noticed that the battery was draining at a much faster rate than usual, even on standby.  I think the rate at which the battery drains during standby is the same as when I'm actually using it, but I'm not sure.  I thought at first that it was related to IOS version, so I upgraded from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3.  No change.  As of now I'm running 8.2, but I'm still seeing high battery drain.  On standby, the battery drains at a rate of ~10%/hour, meaning I can't take it to work without bringing my adapter too.  While charging, I've also noticed an unusual amount of heat.
Another strange thing I've noticed is that, unless I use portrait lock, some apps like Safari will immediately go to landscape mode even if I'm not holding it horizontally, and rotating the phone doesn't fix it.  Both of these issues persisted even after I updated IOS, hard rebooted, turned on/off, and did full resets.  I also tried signing out of ICloud, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.
Anyone else suffer these problems?  Will probably have the phone looked at later this week.

I Agreed to post an update after the installation of 8.2 .. I have to say that the battery life has shown a major improvement after the update.  I also discovered what was causing the Home & Lock screen drain.  I went to settings and disable "HAND OFF" it was causing my battery to deplete at a rapid pace. However , I have to ammit that the battery performance still remained better after the update even with Hand Off running in the background.

  • Iphone 6 fast battery drain IOS 8.1.2 even on standby

I have a new iphone 6 64Gb setup as a new phone, already with IOS 8.1.2 installed.  I have experienced really fast battery drain all the time.
I have tried with location services disabled,
    push disabled,
    background app refresh disabled
    siri off
    Icloud Keychain off
Itunes & App store updates OFF, Use cellular data OFF
and is still draining battery very fast.  My previous iphone 5 could get from 6.30am to 7pm on one charge, this iphone 6 is on 30% by 3pm.  The main apps I use are Mailbox, safari, waze , tunein and phone and ALL of these apps show as the main "battery usage" items.  Basically having any app open with the screen on causes the battery % to drop before your eyes.  I have also experienced battery drain on standby overnight.  The drain is so fast that using waze for a 45 minute journey causes 30% drop
Basically it is unusable as a smart phone without having a charger connected all the time.  Please can someone help?
    thanks
    Dave

I had this same problem.  Phone draining brand new, extremely fast.  Usage and standby times in the battery usage meter have been nearly identical after 4 or 5 hours off the charger.
Went to Genius Bar two weeks ago, they noticed the battery drain in their test but said that nothing else looked unusual (battery fine, no major software issues, etc) and sent me on my way.
The problem continued, last weekend, did a full reset of the phone and set up as a new phone.  Logged in using my AppleID at the setup and made sure to use the @icloud email address.  I had previously used my first AppleID--a gmail account--from many years ago.  The accounts were linked (gmail ID, linked to @icloud, @me, @mac address from later setups).
My problem was solved--went two days without charging, battery life was amazing, until today, when after the phone was acting odd, powered off then turned back on--battery drain began immediately and usage and standby levels are the same.  I left the phone untouched for the last hour and "usage" went up and hour, as did stand-by.
For reference--no push email, fetch at 30 minutes, minimal location services on, background app refresh off, automatic update off, parallax off, etc. I have done every "trick" possible to improve battery life (some that make the phone useless).
iCloud seems to be the problem--can't figure out what part of iCloud is the culprit though.
Have another GB appointment tomorrow.  Hopefully will get a more thorough diagnosis of the problem.  Hopefully report back a solution.

my iphone 6 plus battery drain very fast even  I never surf net nor play game.i went to service centre at Singapore for 2 time, the staff told me my battery no problem.my battery only can last for few hours after full charge.

    Hello Jjs10099,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the battery is not lasting as long as you would like. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Why Does My iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.0.1 Cause Rapid Battery Drain

I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4.0.1, and now the battery drains very rapidly---needs to be recharged after a few hours---and gets very warm. Before this, iOS 4.0 was fine (although slightly increased battery drain over 3.1.3).
I use Exchange with push and had no issues before iOS 4.0.1. This may be the culprit now because when I turn off "push," the battery drain appears to be normal (although not extensively tested yet). But, I also have MobileMe, Yahoo!, and Google email accounts set up.
Is this a new problem? Anyone else have this problem? How can this be fixed? Anyone have any ideas?

*Reposting this..had done the same thing earlier as well*
    This is my observation from past 6 nights;
All 6 nights, charged my iPhone to max and then kept it in sleep/stand by. Not even a single call or mail checked...(11 pm to 6:30 am when my alarm rings)
1st & 2nd Nights, I had flight center, angry birds, twitter, facebook, mail, phone, sms, settings app open in the multi-tasking bar.
Battery drained from 100% to 83%
3rd and 4th nights, i had only twitter, facebook, mail, phone, sms
Battery drained from 100% to 92%
5th and 6th nights, I had nothing open
Battery drained from 100% to 93%
my mail is always in push enable setting to exchange and me account,
location always on, bluetooth always off. 3G off
I thought, the applications on multi tasking bar is actually not draining the battery, but looks like they are...might be a flaw in multi tasking api or may be from developer.
I hope to get an easy way to kill the apps and not let it go to multi tasking bar.

  • IPad 3G - Battery Drain in standby mode in areas of strong 3G coverage

I'm having an issue with my 2-week old iPad 3G that I cannot seem to find reference to in this forum so I'd be grateful for any assistance that can be provided.
Despite switching off all push notifications, in areas of strong cell coverage the battery charge on my iPad 3G drops at an alarming rate whilst in standby mode (6% per hour). Switching the iPad to WiFi only and putting it into standby mode reduces the discharge rate to less than 1% every 5 hours.
I've compared the performance of my device with the exact same specification device of a colleague using the same network (O2 in the UK) in the same location (our office) and his device drops less than 0.5% charge per hour in standby mode whilst connected to the 3G bearer.
My initial thoughts are 1) faulty SIM card which is causing the device to continually poll the network or 2) faulty 3G radio module which needs replacing.
I've reset the device and conditioned the battery, all to no avail. 7% battery drain per hour limits the mobility of the device and I'd very grateful for any ideas.
    Many thanks

This seems like a poster child story for the use of an integrated SIM in the next iPhone and iPad. Since this would eliminate the user having to switch sim cards and the likelihood of getting a bad SIM.
Thank you for coming back and letting us all know about your issue and your resolution.

  • Iphone 6 plus battery drain

Hi there everyone!!! My iPhone 6 Plus 64GB and My wife's iPhone 6 Plus 64GB both have a battery drain issue. We fully discharge batteries then recharge them then unplug them and let them sit afterward without no use and after say like 4 to 6 hours it drains to like 95% that is after unplugging phones and not touching them just sitting in standby. I heard the batteries on the iPhone 6 Plus was suppose to be better but I find them not to be any better but perhaps same as any other battery from any other version iPhone. Has anybody else have this issue or seen this happen?  If so, what can be done? Is there any fix to hopefully get batteries back to a better state? Let me know as any and all information or suggestions will be gladly accepted. Thanks so much in advance.

Just so you know, 100 to 95% in standby is normal...
So, what is the issue you're having?
Have you checked the battery usage (Settings > Usage > Battery Usage) to see what apps/functions are using the most power in a 24 hour period?

  • IPhone 6 heat, battery drain, screen brightness flickering

My iPhone 6 has three issues. They are all connected in someway I believe. First my iPhone 6 gets rather hot with only moderate use, whenever it gets hot the battery will drain allot. For these too problems I have tried resetting, draining the battery to 0 and then charging to 100 and rebooting again, as well as disabling all battery draining technologies, such as location services. After all of these, the battery life is still worse than my older iPhone 5, using the same applications. The third problem is that the screen's brightness will randomly flick and drop. I have auto-brightness disabled, and my phone does it in all different kinds of circumstances. It will randomly drop when its cold or hot, when the brightness is at any setting, as well in any lighting of room. I have even done a side-by-side test of this between my iPhone 6 and my friends with the same background, after it randomly flickered, even with the brightness all the way up, it was darker than the other one. If you need any extra information just ask!

  • IOS 4.2.1 + 3G data = hot phone & extremely rapid battery drain

    Anyone else having this issue?
Since "upgrading" to iOS 4.2.1 on the weekend, it seems anytime I try to use the phone for data over 3G, it'll heat up like crazy and I can watch the battery drain in front of my eyes.
Everything else works fine including data over WiFi aside from some apps quitting abruptly without any transition effects.
I've reset and just finished Restoring. Less than a minute after I turn off WiFi and use any kind of data, the phone heats up and my battery % actually went down while connected to my Mac Pro.

    Donovan,
just wanted to share my experience... I too updated to 4.2.1 the other day and running on Rogers network. I noticed that the 3G data seems to be the culprit. Its consistantly downloading data! I can only imagine what Rogers is going through if all iphone 3G's are having this issue :s... I just turned off cellular data and running some tests, later tonight going to try a full restore to see what that will do...
    keep you posted.

  • Rapid battery drain after turning on iCloud

Is it normal for iCloud to drain my battery so quickly? Since turning on iCloud for Calendars, my battery drained almost completely overnight, and went from 61% down to 36% in about 2 hours doing nothing other than sending one very short (2 words) iMessage. I'd like to use iCloud but keeping my iPhone plugged in constantly is not an option.

  • IOS 5 rapid battery drain (including in sleep mode), springboard crashes: FIX!

OK folks, I resolved all issues in their entirety with the help of a genius bar tech who recognized that I was very technical.  WARNING!  Sync or backup your phone prior to performing these steps!
First, do a MANUAL download here of the IOS 5 that matches the model of phone you have and save that image to your desktop or some other place on your computer.  PUT THE PHONE IN DFU MODE, not recovery mode (google on how to accomplish if you are not familiar).  The raeson why you are going to put in DFU mode is so that you will be able to not only get a good copy of IOS 5 installed but to ensure that your firmware is not corrupt, which appeared to be the case with my battery drains and springboard crash issues.
One you are in DFU mode (your screen should be black the whole time, again google), open itunes and it will give you a warning that says that your phone needs to be restored.  If you are on a mac, hold down the option key and press RESTORE in iTunes.  This will open up a box that will allow you to "locate and select" a file, which will be the IOS 5 image that you manually downloaded before.
Once you do, the iphone will start to restore.  After all of the restore cycles have been completed, you will be prompted in iTunes to either setup as a new phone or restore from backup.  I USED RESTORE FROM BACKUP so that I could preserve all of my settings.  Everything has been working PERFECTLY ever since completing these steps!  I will probably go ahead and make a separate thread related to this fix.
    I hope this helps!  Scott

Their is another thread in here that mentions turning off reporting of Diagnostics data (Settings --> General --> About --> Scroll to the bottom/Diafnostics --> Select Don't send.
Another item to check are you E-mail accounts. If you only have one account in this section then you should be good. If you have multiple and have every feature turned on (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, etc) then your device could be trying to update to all and timing out which would get it to retry over and over again. I have turned off all the other features for my email accounts with the exception of iCloud and my battery life is looking good.

  • Rapid battery drain after Mavericks Install

    Hey everyone,
I've spent a lot of time reviewing the existing threads and haven't been able to pinpoint a solution to my issue. I upgraded my late 2008 MacBook Aluminum 2.4 GHZ to Mavericks, and noticed considerable battery drain. I made an appointment at the Apple Store to do a clean install of Mavericks, and this seemed to help but as I installed software required to access internet at school (SafeConnect, AnyConnect VPN, Avast) my battery life has gone down again. Also, the battery drains when the computer is supposed to be in sleep mode. I have a new battery on board (127 cycles, my cycle count has increased a lot due to this battery drain issue). Does anyone have an idea of what could be the offending software and provide me potential alternatives?
Some numbers for reference: With Snow Leopard I have 3.5 hrs of battery life, and after my initial clean install I had 3.5 hrs of battery life (so no improvement, but no worse performance either..). Now I am lucky to make 2 hrs with a full charge.

  • 9800 Torch - Rapid Battery Drain

I've searched a bunch of forums and found that this is an old problem, but this has just started happening on my device within the last 2-3 weeks.  I have a Torch 9800 with 6.0.0 Bundle 2647.  When i look for an upgrade, the desktop software tells me that i have the latest version (ie..no upgrade available).
My Blackberry 6.0.0 System Software is pulling 100% of the CPU time.  I have deleted a few of the apps that i thought might be the culprit, and the problem goes away for a day or two, then boom, BSS 6.0.0 is pulling 100% again, and my battery drains quickly, and the phone acts sluggish, to the point it is almost useless.  I am at wits end, and although this appears to have been resolved in an older version of the OS, my OS seems to be up to date.
    Any ideas out there?
