IPhone 5 restore Error (1)

To Whom It May Conern,
I recieved an iPhone from a friend recently (iPhone 5) with a shattered screen. It does not work anymore, and the home button is damaged beyond use as well.
The phone is still recognized by iTunes and the PC's I've use it with however.
I also disessembled it to confirm water damage or not. All stickers white, no water damage.
I was told by the person whom gave it to me, I would need to replace the screen but could still restore it and get it ready as it was currently.
I first hooked it up to a Windows 8 pc, and after some driver/software updating, the phone was  recognized/drivers installed/etc., and iTunes had it as able to view Music, Photos, Apps, etc.
I went to factory restore it, updated iTunes/Windows, and now it is getting an error message (1) every time I do this.
I have attempted this a total of about 20 times now, on multiple computers, as well as a Mac. The last attempt was on a Mac, and I saved the error details, as written here:

Hello everyone,
After dealing with this issue for a few days I was able to fix my issue.
The errors that I was getting were 1 and -1 on an iPhone4 upgrading to IOS 7
I read and tried every fix under the sun it seemed.
The fix for me was the DNS cache (even though I tried it on a different computer)
Here is the whole story...
I had a working iPhone4 on iOS6 when I started trying to upgrade to the latest version.
I plugged it in to iTunes and hit restore, after an extremely long DL (slow on my end) it failed.
I decided at that time that I would actually start trying and I unplugged all my other USB and used a real apply usb cable as opposed to my long one.
I also updated iTunes to the latest version and hit the restore button in iTunes again.
After another extemely long DL (because turns out my old verison of iTunes downloaded 6.1.3) I tried again.
Error 1 or -1 depending on which time I tried.
I then checked my hosts file and it was good so I tried disconnecting the battery and hitting the power buton a bunch to drain the power and it still failed with error 1.
After maunally downloading the firmware from ipsw downloader i tried again but no results so I downloaded the alternate version of the software for GSM phones which was the incorrect version so didn't even start before it failed.
Frustrated at this point so I get a netbook and throw a fresh copy of windows 7 onto it.
Update all the drivers and various runtimes then installed latest verison of iTunes.
checked the hosts just to be stupid sure it would work and it was good.
Error 1
So at this point I have waisted two days and I have alreadly replaced the clients phone as "I (meaning apple)" broke it.
So back on my main PC I start from square one and realise that I never actually cleared my DNS cache as it says in many instructions.
So I try that and 10 minutes later I got a brand new phone.
TLDR: Clear your DNS cache in Windows and Mac
Steps I used to fix it
Apple brand charger
back/motherboard usb port
hosts file empty
dns cache cleared
dfu mode
Shift click restore button for custom ipsw file / latest version
To clear DNS cache in Windows hit the windows key or button in the bottom right (windows 7) and type CMD
Right click and run cmd as administrator
type
ipconfig /flushdns
I fixed mine after giving up so don't give up and don't feed the "unplug it" and "hit buttons at a certain point trolls".
Good Luck.

  • IPhone Restore Failing at "Verifying IPhone Restore" Error -6

i have an old iPhone 3G that i use for my daughter. i took out the sim card and she could watch movies and play games. it crashed one day so i plugged it into a mac and tried to restore. well it goes through it's processes and gets to "Verifying iPhone Restore" (it completes "Verifying iPhone Software") and stops with an Error 6. I looked at Apple's page here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275 and Error 6 has to do with Windows Registry. Well i wasn't using a windows box to restore, i tried it on a 15" MBP, a 13" MBP, and a 27" imac. I have tried doing this over 30 times and get the same Error 6.
Does anyone know of a solution to this? The iPhone is about 2 months out of warranty so i cant send it in without it costing $$$.

i took out the sim card and she could watch movies and play games
While you can use an iphone as a touch without a sim card in the phone, you cannot update or restore software without a valid sim card in the phone. The sim card need not be activated(with a carrier plan), but it must be present. So, are you trying to restore without a valid sim card? If so, that's your problem. You need a valid sim card, which is defined as a sim card from the carrier the phone was last locked to or used with. It need not be activated(with carrier plan), but it must be present.

  • Iphone restore error 23

Hi I am having quite a big problem with my iPhone
    I have an iPhone 3G,
It won't switch on, when I plug it into a power source the apple logo appears and then the phone screen goes black after about 30 secs.
I read about a DFU mode or something, when I plug it into my laptop I have to hold down the lock button and home button at the same time and then just the home button.
This works and I get to the restore screen on itunes.
The restore starts but then after it says preparing to restore I get an error '23' code.
I have also tried doing the same thing on my sisters laptop and I get the same error so it is nothing to do with the laptop I don't think.
If anyone could tell me what to do to fix this error then i'd be very gratefull.
    Thanks

    Hi Pete,
If you haven't already, try restoring the iPhone on another computer.
Also, try the general tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275 may resolve the issue.
The iPhone will need service if the issue persists after trying the tips in that article. This webpage: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone/service/faq/ provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions about iPhone service in the UK.

  • IPhone Restore error (1) and then in DFU, error(2001).

    Hi All.
I have an iPhone4 which "needs to be restored". ITunes downloads the software and begins to unpack and restore the phone.  The display on the phone is active and the progress bar is incrementing durng the process.
About half way through the process i recieve an error (1) from iTunes. When trying to restore in DFU mode this changes to error(2001).
The device's serial number is unknown (n/a) to iTunes. I am currently travelling and do no have documentation or original packaging with me.
I do not believe the warranty would be valid, and i am unaware of the location of any Apple stores within the region i am currently residing. However, this phone is registered with Apple, would there be a way of verifying this number from my AppleID account?
Is this a lost cause? Or is there a clever boffin out there who knows what i can do about this.
Kind regards and thank you in advance for any light that can shed on this matter,
    Dan

    Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.
    Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

  • IPhone restore error 1002

My phone is telling me that I need to restore it.
I did all the DFU/force restore stuff.
    I used multiple computers.
Itunes will give me error message 1002 just before the phone completely restores. Phone is not jail-broken or anything like that.
I've tried to restore my phone at least 10 times to no avail.
What does error 1002 even mean? I'm desperate! Please help!

Very similar situation. I my 3gs in the car for 30min. It said that it overheated, but temps where not that hot??? It went in to emergency call only. I tried to restore several times. Called technical service and since it is a bit over a year old I could only get "tips" unless I wanted to pay for advise.
So I tried restore on my mac, on my pc. I have uninstalled/reinstalled itunes. I've turned off virus protection/firewalls. I've done every recommendation and it still spits out error 1002. I'm thinking it is toasted!!!!
If there are any success stories I would love to hear about it!
BTW I updated to iOS 4 only a few days before???

After reading various thread on this issue on this forum it looks like it's not going to get restored.
Hopefully someone reads this and decide to improve and fix this.
Yes I was very happy with the iphone the last 2 years or so that I had it. I really want to get a 4G iphone but I'm really disappointed with this issue.

How do I fix this? I've searched and have found no solutions. Please help.

How about thanks for the reply for starters.
Or how about including the troubleshooting steps you have already tried without success so those who volunteer their time to answer questions and provide help here don't waste their time and yours providing a troubleshooting step or steps you have already tried without success. And when they do because you didn't take the time to include what you have already tried, "of course I have" without a simple thanks, which is called manners especially when you are the one looking for help.
Including with your original post that you are trying to install a previous firmware version than the one currently installed on your iPhone is slightly pertinent information also.

    Hey jestinsinclairr,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you had one issue and then got a second trying to resolve the first. A frustrating situation for sure. I purchased an Iphone 4 in April of 2012.  I always keep it on and charge it every night.  I have had some trouble turning, a couple of times, in the past.  It was simply reluctant to turn on after allowing the battery to be completely expended and has behaved the same way after being manually turned off.  I have again allowed the battery to completly die and turn off the phone.   This time it will not turn on at all.  I have tried various combinations of pressing and holding home and power to no avail.  I plugged it in to the computer, but Itunes will not recognize it as my phone.  Itunes is labeling it "Iphone" and has requested that I restore the phone in order to use it with Itunes.  Itunes states that "has detected an Iphone in recovery mode".  I, reluctantly, attempted to restore the phone.  After waiting quite a while on a "software update" to download, it said preparing Iphone for restore and then said "unable to restore Iphone, unknown error - 3194".  I read, online, that I needed the most recent version of itunes in order to restore.  So I upgraded Itunes and restarted the compluter.  On the second, and all subsequent attempts to complete the restoration, I am prompted with a message stating "unable to restore IPhone, unknown error - 1600".  My computer also attempted, and I believe, successfully, installed new device driver software for iphone4 (DFU mode).  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Also is my phone, purchased 4/12, under any service or replacement warranty.  I truly feel it should be easier to turn on and I did not even want to restore the phone, I just need to use it.
    Thank you,
    Geoffrey

I am reading on this site about the error I am getting and it wants me to change some files that I am not comfortable messing with. Mainly because it is like a foreign language. Will the store do this for me or tell me if it is neccessary?

My iphone 5c says connect to itunes. It won't update/restore; error message (27) comes up. I also haven't backed the phone up since last year. HELP.

    Hi there owain11,
It looks like that particular error may be realted to a hardware issue. Take a look at the article below for more information.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
