IPhone 5s blue screen, freeze, lockup, reboot, restart

One day, out of the blue, my phone screen went to a blue screen and then restarted.  It happened just a couple times a day and was not isolated to any particular app when it occurred;it was random other than the fact that I was utilizing the phone when it happened.  I ended up searching for some answers and tried restoring the phone, rebooting by holding the power and home button down, using recovery mode to restore the phone and nothing seemed to work.  Then, it stopped going to the blue screen for a few days.  The issue resurfaced with new symptoms which haven't gone away since.  I still get the blue screen, although less often and now it reset dozens of times a day, sometimes in a repeated loop for several minutes.  Once, the screen froze and the image was distorted with vertical lines every other row of pixels on a portion of the screen.  Everything I have tried (reboots, restores, etc) have failed to fix the problem.  This appears to be a fairly widespread issue with iPhones and I'm curious what apple has to say about it.  Is it IOS compatibility issues?  Does apple plan on finding a fix for the issue?  Will there be a recall?  These phones are not cheap to replace and I can't afford the risk of buying a new iPhone without some sort of assurances and/or explanation from apple.  I've been using iPhones since the 3g was released and but now I consider my options.

Sorry, this is a user to user technical forum. We are just users like you, so we wouldn't know what Apple has to say about it. You can send your feedback directly to Apple, however:

  • IPhone 6 plus screen freezes intermittently - forced restart required

I'm on an iPhone 6 plus with 128gb running 8.1.2.
It seems that intermittently (recently mostly in iMessage; which hasn't been behaving since 8 & yosemite) my phone screen freezes.
By freeze, I mean it is visible. It will even paralax on the home screen so some CPU/GPU stuff is working, I can even click and double-click the home button, but touching the screen elicits no response what so ever.
Recently a new version of the problem has only started in iMessage where I am getting some results, but never anywhere close to the target I actually touch.
    Is this a known issue?
Is there a solution, that is known to work?
Is this a hardware problem or software problem?
I have removed all non-apple keyboards because it seemed to always start when I was typing someplace (regardless of keyboard used).
    Suggestions? Help!
    Thanx!
    -- Dave

I've been having similar issues with iOS 8.1.3 on my six plus. It will freeze exactly as you describe--home button works, parallax works, but touching the screen elicits no response. I can also double-press the home button to bring up multi-task view, and I can scroll through the open apps, but I can neither change to another app nor swipe apps up to close them. The freezing occurs most often within the Messages and Email apps, but I've had it happen in Safari, Settings, Calendar, etc. When it happens, its usually a second or two after I open one of the apps in question. Once it freezes, I have to press the lock button and then unlock it, and then everything works fine again for a period. Restarting the phone doesn't really help, as it will randomly freeze again when using one of the aforementioned apps. Apple support recommended I try backing up to iTunes and restoring the phone using the Set up as New option. It seems to have helped a little. Maybe its my imagination, but it doesn't seem to be freezing nearly as often or as long (knocks on wood). But it did not alleviate the problem entirely.

  • Blue screen, freeze, restart

Having an issue with freeze up, blue screen, restart when streaming video from any of the networks, netflix or even hulu.
Last week it started happening in full screen mode.
Using Google Chrome, have been dealing with crashes for sometime.
In dealing with the "flashplayer" "shockwave player" and "chrome" crashes, I have learned a few very interesting items, when it comes to PC's in general.
"Plugins" and "conflicts" in chrome seem to be a regular occurence, I check them first when I have an issue now.
I run disk cleanup regularly, and found searching the control panel for another unrelated issue, the error reports when there is a crash issue and where they end up on the hard drive.
With the freeze up, blue screen, restart I have found another anti-virus program, and uninstalled it, in searching for a cause to the problem.
Checking the error reports and deleting all those with no solutions, I found one with, and opened it to search microsoft for a fix.
Set out last night to run the issue to find a code in the restart to use for reference and found two, after multiple shutdowns.
The report identified a software issue and called it "stop" blue screen now I am needing to know what it will take if any fix will work to resolve this problem.
I have the problems saved for reference if it is needed.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

    Cause
One possible cause of this bug check is disk corruption. Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk can induce this error. Corrupted SCSI and IDE drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, thus causing the error.
Another possible cause is depletion of nonpaged pool memory. If the nonpaged pool memory is completely depleted, this error can stop the system. However, during the indexing process, if the amount of available nonpaged pool memory is very low, another kernel-mode driver requiring nonpaged pool memory can also trigger this error.
    Resolving the Problem
To debug this problem: Use the .cxr (Display Context Record) command with Parameter 3, and then use the kb (Display Stack Trace) command.
To resolve a disk corruption problem: Check Event Viewer for error messages from SCSI and FASTFAT (System Log) or Autochk (Application Log) that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. Try disabling any virus scanners, backup programs, or disk defragmenter tools that continually monitor the system. You should also run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer. RunChkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition.
To resolve a nonpaged pool memory depletion problem: Either add new physical memory to the computer (thus increasing the quantity of nonpaged pool memory available to the kernel), or reduce the number of files on the Services for Macintosh (SFM) volume.

  • IPhone 5: Blue Screen and Restarting Issue

I have an iPhone 5 and am running iOS 7.0.04.  Just a few days ago my phone has had the following issues:
    1)  Phone randomly restarts
    2)  While using the phone, system will crash and the result is the Blue Screen of death.  Only way to get out of this crash is to do a manual restart
    3) While using phone, screen will start flickering, lines will appear on screen and I will either get a Blue Screen or a White Screen.
I have done the following to date:
    1) Backed up Phone and synced/restored from my Computer
    2) Erased all settings and restored from iCloud Backup
My phone is out of warranty and I think if I take it back to the Apple Store they will tell me I'm SOL.
Just wanted to know if people think this is a Hardware or Software issue.

    Hello jackhandy234,
I have a white iPhone 5 running on the latest IOS 7.0.4 and I am having a similar problem. I have had my phone for about 6 months now and have had it always well protected in a sturdy case similar to an otter box case. I have had no problems with the phone until 2 nights ago.
While on the messaging app "kik" My phone froze up, vertical pixalated lines appeared,it faded into a black screen, shut down and automatically turned on again. It repeated this "glitch" while powering back up about 3 times. Finally after having to manually restart it by pressing the power and home button for 5-6 seconds it stop.
After going back to using my phone, not 5 mins past, and it was "glitching" up again. In the past 48 hours it has glitch over 26+ times. Everytime I need to use my phone for more then 5 mins I need to manually reset it.
If you have found a solution to your problem, please post it because it could possibly solve mine.

  • IPhone 5S Blue Screen of Death: seemingly no options left, any ideas?

Purchased my iPhone 5S in Nov 2013, haven't had any problems until mid-December. Made the jump from iOS 7.? to iOS 8.1.2. Afterwards, I started noticing that when I would plug the phone into any cable that it wouldn't sense a charge, would need to remove and re-seat. Phone started thinking Apple cables were uncertified, things like that. No big deal, I would just unplug and re-plug a few times until it recognized the cable was legit. Note: I own several Apple and Apple-certified cables, it didn't matter which cable I used, this issue persisted across all of them.
Forward a few weeks after the update, I wake up one morning and start using my phone and it freezes. Few seconds later, the screen goes blue, several striped lines dissolve in an out between blue/gold/black/silver/white. Press home+sleep button and restart the phone, normal boot for a few seconds until it kernel panics again. Repeat about 5 times until the phone actually starts. I have my MacBook Pro, plug it in, make several attempts to backup until it works (with several kernel panics in between). Restore iPhone from backup. Issue persists. Assume backup is corrupt. Restore phone to factory settings (sacrificing all data, but I just want a working phone at this point). Issue persists. Holidays over, get back to my home.
Make appointment at Apple Store, tech takes a look at it. Notes no physical damage, no water damage. Pulls up diagnostics, everything looks good. Finds dozens of kernel panics logged, blames hardware based on the diagnostics. Tech notes that my phone is "2 months" (more like 5 weeks) out of warranty, no AppleCare, tells me they can't do a warranty replacement. Phone needs to be replaced, offers $269 for a replacement 5S. Mention the phone was working fine before the update. Tech says that sometimes the updates will cause a phone with failing hardware to finally fail (paraphrasing). Can't afford the $269, ask about upgrade eligibility. Tech passes me off to a salesperson who says I'm not eligible until November. Could sign up for AT&T Next, which as I understand splits the cost of a new phone over a year (additional ~$50/mo for a new phone?). Getting married at the end of the year, so money is tight.
Take phone to work yesterday, delete all of my apps from my phone. Plug phone into computer at work (never synced to this machine). Tell machine to do a factory reset, assume that it will be the "cleanest" sync since the app data isn't on this machine. Phone works great... for 18 hours. Wake up this morning, load up Find Friends, freezes and BSODs.
So, looking for any options outside of having to pay $269 for a new phone. Soapbox... Owned Apple stuff all my life: Apple IIe, Mac 2C, Performa 575, PowerMac 6500, iMac, iMac DV, G4, MacBook Pro (LED), MacBook Pro (retina), gen-1 iPod, iPod classic, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 5S. I've given the company a lot of money over my life. Rarely have I turned to them for repairs and this is the first time they've spurned me weeks outside of warranty coverage. Considering this entire thing started with an update they pushed to my phone, I'm pretty disappointed with them right now.
tl;dr iPhone 5S kernel panics and blue-screens frequently (~dozen times a day) after iOS 8.1.2 update. Few weeks out of warranty, so Apple store told me I can pay them $269 for a refurb, otherwise not helpful. Not eligible for upgrade until November. No physical damage (water or otherwise). Tried to restore from backup, issues persisted. Deleted all of my apps, tried factory restore, issues persist. Any further options?

UPDATE (13-Jan 2015): Took my phone do a different AppleStore and had an appointment with a Genius. The Genius hinted that I should call AppleCare (1-800-APL-CARE) and tell them my story. He said that it was not possible for him to do it, but that by escalating the problem to AppleCare that they may help. I was on the phone with a rep and his supervisor for about an hour before they told the Genius to replace my phone as a one-time out-of-warranty replacement. They stated that because the phone was working fine before the update, and showed no damage, that they would grant my request. Yay Apple for making this right!
This is a known bug, error 101 or something.  Only solution they have at the moment is warranty replacement.

  • Blue Screen Freeze, Not related to the old one?

I recently bought my Macbook Pro 15 inch (early 2008 model) in april of 2008. I have had it for the greatest year of my life. Though today, i had my first problem with it. I was online with about 4-5 applications running (normal) and it froze. The pinwheel showed up. I just thought to myself that it would be a regular restart and reboot kind of deal. So i pressed the button and it shut off right away. Usually i hold it for 4-6 seconds. That was the first weird thing. I start up my mac again and it won't start up. It freezes at a dark (in lightness) light blue screen. It gets to the part where it shows the apple but won't bring me to my login access code. I tried removing the battery and putting it back in. I tried holding option. I tried holding the power button. I tried holding C and i tried to wait. I left my house around 2pm for work and got back at 1am and i tried it again. It still is doing the same problem. I do not know what is wrong. This mac is my baby. I need any suggestions or advice in troubleshooting this bad boy. Thank you!

    Hi asd31;
Do you regularly shutdown by pressing the button?
If so there is a good chance you have managed to corrupt the disk so bad it is no longer usable.
You say you held down the C, did you have the install DVD that came with your Mac in the drive?
If not, then it was not able to start from the install DVD. I would suggest putting the install DVD into the drive and trying to start it again with C held down.

  • Blank Blue Screen / Freezing

My iBook froze this weekend. Upon rebooting the thing, it started booting up with a blank blue screen and wouldn't go past. I tried booting into Safe Mode: Same result. I didn't have my installation disc with me so I began following these steps:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
I can get into Single-User mode fine and perform the commands in there, ran fsck . No Problems found. I reset the PMU. No luck. Eventually, I got home and tried to bootup using my Tiger install disc. I ran Disk Utility and it found no problems. After another reboot, the iBook boots up to a blank blue screen when loading from the installation disc just as it does when loading Mac OS X regularly. Randomly here and there, after about 10 tries, I may be able to get the laptop to boot into Mac OS X or the install disc, but it will freeze shortly after and I have to restart and get the blank screen again.
After trying the above, I took out the removable RAM and it booted up. I thought I had found the problem but shortly after it froze again. I'm not sure what the problem is but it's out of warranty and I know the answer I'm going to get is most likely hardware related.

    Hey Kyle,
So like Rhonda says the work is not guaranteed. Here are pics of exactly that problem on a recent repair I did:
"I just recently repaired a G3 iBook 900 MHz 14.1" that had the classic GPU problem. Unfortunately, while the GPU was healthy but loose before the reballing the "patient" died on the operating table. This is a known pitfall in the reballing process. So when I got the board back the GPU was working but totally dead exhibiting the dark moving shadows I've come to dread.
The GPU was a ATI 7500 so I referenced it to many other PC laptop graphics cards.
I settled on a new Inspiron 5100 ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 32Mb 9U768 on ebay and obtained it for $26 with shipping.
Dale at Superior swapped the chips and "Voila" the 900 works like new.
I have the Dell board and the 7500 chip and I thought that you all would be interested in what has been giving so many of us display headaches.
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
What you see is the bottom of the chip on the left and the mounting array on the graphics board on the right.
Even tho' this is a G3 the G4 chip is very similar."
The other place that does this work is First Phase.
Prices are like $75 for a reball and $50 for a reflow (probably not as good). You have to pull the board and send it to them.
If you want to/feel comfortable doing that email me and I can provide instructions.
You could take the bottom off and place a shim under that area we're talking about. iBooks have worked for quite a while with a shim in place. Your's might be a good candidate since it doesn't seem like there's a lot of detachment of the BGA.

  • Blue screen crash and reboot!

The first day I got my iPhone 4 my iPhone flashed a blue screen then rebooted twice in the same day, I then did a complete restore...
Today, 6 days latter my iPhone 4 again just showed a blue screen then rebooted...
Has this happened to anyone else? Is the blue screen just the 'new way' to crash?
    Is my iPhone faulty?

I have the same message on black screen topic as it varies....
I once got this, the first day i used my iphone 4. But it restarted and have not had the issue till today.
Now i get the blue/black screen of death on my iphone4 frequently, under a period of 4 hours I've got it approximately 10 times. No I'm not exaggerating 10 times give or take a few.
I'm restoring it, got it three times in the middle of restoring. I've had one successful restore today, i hope the one i'm dong at the moment of writing this will be successful.
I will try to restore it as a new one. But I'm afraid it's the A4 built in memory that is the root cause.
As when it restarts or starts i quite often get a distorted apple logo. Not always but very often. This leads me to believe that its a memory issue and hardware. It runs 4.0.2.
Any experience of similar problems out there. Tomorrow i take it to a Apple concept store but i want input.

  • Iphone 5s blue screen of death

So yesterday my iphone 5s that was brand new at Christmas was being very glitchy. It was freezing and then I did a hard shut down (hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds) at now when i try to turn it back on the the white screen with the black apple logo shows up then the white wheel show up the phone wont load up and the whit wheel just keeps on spining until it overheats and then i get the blue screen of the and it restarts itself and repeats the whole thing again. So any answers will help me.   Thank you very much

I spoke to Apple again and to cut a long story short, they basically said its RIP for my phone. They have ordered me a replacement that should get delivered tomorrow. They did say I could walk in to an Apple store and pick a new one up, but I don't live near an Apple store so they are going to send one.
He described the issue as 'a developing problem that they are becoming aware of'. To be honest they didn't make me try to do much to save the phone and were very quick in offering me a new one so they must know it is game over when it happened.
I'm just glad I backed up to my iMac last night.

  • Ipod + itunes = blue screen of death & reboot - HELP PLEASE!

I'll try to make a long story as short as possible here.
i've had a 40G ipod for over a year and a half now. back in the beginning things were working fine. with the size i hadn't done any syncing for a long long time. however, the ipod crapped out so i got a replacement from the apple store.
after registering the new ipod i was having trouble syncing. it would upload a few hundred songs and then freeze or cause a reboot. i uninstalled the ipod software as well, installed the latest itunes software - over the previous version, installed the latest ipod updater software and restored the ipod.
again, i was able to sync for brief periods in 3 different tries - amassing a whole six hundred and something songs. after each try itunes said syncing was complete (but not even close - had just over 2000 mp3s looking to sync up). unbelievably things got worse. now, if the ipod is docked and itunes is running - regardless of which is done first - my pc will get the blue screen of death and reboot itself.
also, without itunes and the ipod docked, it shows up as an i: drive, but when i try to browse it though my computer, it locks up the machine and shows nothing.
any help out there is GREATLY appreciated!
    here are my specs:
    - ipod 40 Gig, with click wheel and four buttons below the screen with
    dock & firewire cable
    - pc running windows xp pro
    - firewire card with 3 ports
    - ipod & itunes software located on 120G c: drive
    - mp3 collection located on secondary 160G d: drive
    - 3/4 gig of ram
p.s. i have mcafee running and i've tried everything with it on as well as off. doesn't seem to make a difference.
also, i have checked a TON of posts on apple.com as well as other discussion groups and couldn't find an answer.

    hi Douglas!
first promise me that you'll back up your data. having your PC shut down in non-standard ways (for
    b any
reason) increases your risk of file corruption and putting scruffy spots on your hard drive.
Now some basic first aid. download some fresh definitions and do some vigorous virus and spyware scans. run your favorite hard-disk checking utility. do a disk cleanup.
now let's follow up on the blue screen of death. Perversely, i've started to become pleased when people report BSODs under these circumstances. we can wring a lot of information from a BSOD error message. there's also usually something concrete to go on in the error logs.
    (1) what BSOD error number and message are you getting? here's a reference:
    http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm
    (2) squeeze your error logs for all they're worth. right-click on "My Computer", select manage. click on your event viewer. click on your application and system logs, and look for errors and warnings happening at roughly the same time as your crashes.
click on the relevant warnings to see if you can find any commonalities in the errors/warnings. follow up the Help and Support links to see if you can find any suggested "User action" or relevant MS KB documents. (sometimes these things are there, sometimes they aren't.)
    good luck! keep us posted.
    love, b

  • Who knows how to fix iphone 5s blue screen of death and itunes error 4013?!

    Hi
Last day, dec 14th, a blue screen of death appears on my iphone 5s, aparently because I was installing facebook app.
After that, the iphone remains restarting over and over non stop, until the battery shutoff.
I try to press home and power/sleep buttons for 10 secs, but stil continuous with the blue screen.
After that, with battery charged, I tried to hold the home button and simultaneously connect to an usb cable (the cable is in perfect conditions) to start itunes.
Its worked, but now, everytime shows an itunes message: error 4013, "the iphone cannot be restored".
    What can I do now?!
    Thanks

    Hi Tks777,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you see an "error 4013" when you try to restore your iPhone, try these troubleshooting steps:
    Error 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, and 4016
After you perform each step, try to restore your device.
    Restart your computer.
Disconnect all your USB devices from your computer and connect to another USB port.
    Use a different USB cable.
    Uninstall third-party security software.
Try restoring using an alternate computer.
You can find the article with these steps here:
