Turns out Safari "forces" the french web interface by using the 'hl=fr' code in the url. for example http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=fr
Evidently that overrides local settings, even if you're logged into your Google account.
So, since I can't modify the search query url in Safari without jb'ing my phone, I'd say this one's a bust.

I also thought that this was the case, but that is incorrect. Please see my previous post below:
I was having the same problem with an iPhone 4 and Windows XP. I finally fixed the issue! I read several posts over the past month telling me to make sure that both the PC and iPhone were on the same network. I thought that both were on the same network; however, I was using my "Guest network" to connect my iPhone to my Airport Base Station. In order for both devices to be on the same network, the first 3 numbers of both IP addresses must match. For example, if the PC's IP address is 199.167.1.X, the iPhone's IP address must be 199.167.1.Y. I signed onto my password-protected network from the phone just to see what IP address it would use. As soon as I logged on, my iPhone started to sync wirelessly. I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I would suggest comparing the IP addresses of your PC and iPhone before doing anything else. For those posting that the PC and iPhone must be on the same Wireless network, my PC is hard-wired to the Airport Extreme and it still works!
My Setup:
iPhone 4 (running IOS 5.0.1)
Dell PC (running Windows XP SP3) (no wireless network card)
Airport Exteme Base Station (5th Generation & updated firmware)

Lots of iPhones / iPads on the network forcing iTunes to open?

I work in a big office, there are lots of us with iPhones and iPads running iOS5... since the upgrade, my iTunes seems to want to open at random every few minutes. I assume it's when any iPhone hits the wireless network and then iTunes thinks that it has to WiFi Sync.
It's driving me mad.
Yes, I have checked -> "Preferences -> Devices -> Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically"
But it still opens at random!
I can further this problem by saying that iScrobbler (Last.fm app) also detects when an iPhone has hit the network and tries to send playlists to the server.
Last night I ran a test. I took my iPhone home with me and kept my office computer on. iTunes was closed. When I returned in the morning, iTunes had reopened. It's not my phone causing the problem.
Anyone else had this symptom?

Generally speaking, the iPad backup process is a disaster recovery process, not an archive process. Typically, when creating a new backup, the old one is erased.
If you go to iTunes' Preferences (under the leftmost heading in iTunes' menu on your computer) and then choose "Devices", do you see the specific backup you want to restore listed there? If so, you can restore it. If not, I don't believe you can.

Why does my iPad lose the network I'm on when it goes to sleep?

I Just moved in with someone and I have to manually join the network every time I turn my iPad on. Now all of a sudden, every time my iPad goes to sleep it loses the connection all together. I've already tried resetting the network and also location in the settings. Any other ideas?

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app

    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I've been asking different question here recently connected to iphones and now I have one more question. Does sim-free iphone lock to the carrier of the first sim used in it? I've been using mine for a while and now i'd like to change mobile carrier. So, aren't there going to be any problems with it? Thanks in advance.

Apple does not use the term "SIM free" in any of their marketing materials. If you bought the phone at Carphone Warehouse in the UK, it will lock to the first UK carrier used to activate it. It can not be activated on a foreign network unless unlocked by the UK carrier used to activate it. Other than that, so far as I'm aware, phones are "locked" or "unlocked". I don't know of anywhere else where things are done like they are at carphone warehouse in the UK.

My Airport Extreme is flashing yellow, but I still have internet connections and iPhone access to the network. Does this mean that my network has been hacked or something else?

Suggest the following:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking and offer suggested actions to remedy things.
If everything seems to be working OK, it might simply be a message that an update is available for your AirPort Extreme.
Now you know what to do next time the amber light is blinking.
