IPhone 5S Rear Microphone Causing Muffled/Quiet Voice Calls

Hi folks,
There are quite a few threads here about this issue - iPhone 5S (in my case 32GB grey) with iOS 7.0.4 - fresh install from factory - phone only a few days old - the Rear Microphone (just next to the rear camera) is causing major issues with voice quality for the person at the other end of the line. Outside of a case (naked phone), with the rear mic uncovered, your voice should sound perfectly clear to the other person, but put the phone in a case or cover that rear mic even slightly (and I do mean a TINY bit) and the voice quality suddenly drops dramatically and you sound distant and fuzzy, almost inaudible.
The case I'm using is really thin and the hole cut out around the rear cam and rear mic is easily large enough and not blocking them. But even those few mm of case thickness seem to be causing issues for the mic, and folding the front of the case round the back (for comfort) renders calls almost impossible for me.
I have tried disabling Phone Noise Cancellation but this has zero effect on the situation and the Rear Mic is still functioning (is this a bug in the latest 7.0.4?). I have also tried enabling Hearing Aid mode but this not only had no positive effect on my voice for the other person but actually made the other person almost inaudible to me! So neiher of us could hear eachother.
Conclusion? The Rear Mic has a problem . That problem may or may not be related to Phone Noise Cancellation. This may be an iOS (software) problem or a hardware problem. Either way it is a major problem.
My first upgrade since my iPhone 4 and I wish I hadn't bothered.... making and receiving calls with this 5S is a painful experience so far.
I've had this all but confirmed by Apple Support on the phone, and they confirmed that they've had several similar complaints. Their suggestion was to try a new case, but I can't see how that would help at all, or enough, since my current case has a very adequate hole for the rear mic area and I can't see any other cases having a larger space for this...
So, maybe we can have a show of hands for others suffering with this issue - and please remember to post your spec and setup so we can try to isolate the case of the issue! My hunch (and hope) is that it's a simple software issue that can be sorted, perhaps by properly disabling that Rear Mic (no setting I've found does this yet).

I have been experiencing the same issues since purchasing the iPhone 5s at the end of November. I am constantly being told I sound like I am talking through a pillow when I am yelling into the phone. My software is iOS 7.0.4. I have disabled the noise cancelling feature and no improvement. I have an otterbox commander series on the phone that is specially designed for the 5s. Nothing is blocking any of the microphones on the phone. I am at my wits end with this phone and very disappointed with it. My iPhone 4 was much better.

  • IPhone 5s continue ringing after answering the voice call

    Hi,
After I installed the update iOS 8.0.2 my iPhone 5s continues ringing 0.5-1 sec more after I answered the voice call.
What can I do to fix it? It is pretty uncomfortable, because I use to swipe and answer, but now phone continues ringing in my ear for a some time.
    Thanks in advance!

This has just started happening to me as well! After two months of relatively non-faulty use, now this affect. Really rattles me, too.
Yesterday I got a warning triangle out of the blue that said the phone was shutting down due to overheating, but it was stone cold! I reset then and it has not re-appeared. Never saw that with two years of use on my iPhone 3G. Now this affect, they must be related, but does this mean that there is a software issue or a hardware issue?
I still have proximity sensor issues after the iOS 4.1 upgrade

  • IPhone 4 - I sound muffled / quiet to other person in FaceTime

    Hi all,
I know this has been asked before, but the previous posts seem about a year old so I thought if I'd see if there's any progress.
Basically, I use my iPhone 4 to FaceTime my parents sometimes, when I'm not using my MacBook, but what they've told me is that I sound quiet / muffled on their end. We've both tried turning our volumes up and making sure nothing is clogged up with pocket lint, and obviously making sure we don't have our hands over any mics / speakers, but still I sound muffled at their end. I can hear them just fine and there is no problem when talking on the phone normally (a phonecall, not FaceTime).
I've seen people have just had their phones replaced in previous posts. Is this still an issue now or has there been a development since?
    Thanks in advance!

When I hold my iPhone 5S in my left hand to my left ear the sound is muffled. I remember Steve Jobs saying you're holding it wrong. Although this had nothing to do with the problem we're having now it got me to thinking. I looked at my hand holding the iPhone my thumb was on the left edge with my to two Center fingers on the right edge. My index finger was up close to the noise canceling mic on the back of the phone and my palm was down by the regular mic.  I could see as I talked the voice could hit my palm travel up my hand to my index finger which was close to the microphone on the back.
I called my wife on the house phone using my iPhone 5S. She said that my voice was muffled. I took my index finger away from the microphone and moved it next to my two Center fingers on the right side of the phone. This moved my palm away from the microphone at the bottom. I did this while she stayed on the line. She said that now she could hear me clearly. I then moved my index finger to completely cover the back microphone. Once again she said that the sound was still good. I then moved my index finger a small amount away from the microphone and she said that my voice was muffled again.
I believe that the way I was holding my hand acted as a megaphone to the noise canceling microphone in the back. The noise canceling microphone thought my voice was noise and was suppressing it.
I work in a noisy environment, so I like the idea of the noise canceling microphone. Going to the settings and turning off the noise canceling microphone or putting a small piece of tape over the microphone is really not a good option for me.
For now I will use this new way of holding the phone until Apple can fix this issue.

  • My iPhone 4 microphone that handles standard voice/sound cannot pick-up sound unless the speakerphone, or a headset is used to make/receive calls the other end caller cannot hear me. Any Suggestions? This seems to be common on forums.

Same issue on my wife's iPhone 4S. I suspect it is related to the recent 6.1.2 iOS update (Note: I have a 3S and the update did not cause any issues).
I've tested both bottom and top mics on the 4S using video recorder and both mics work fine. Speakerphone and headset during calls also work fine. The issue is only related to the bottom mic while making calls. I can hear the caller but the caller cannot hear me. If I hold the mic very close to my mouth, the caller can hear a very low level signal.
The problem appears to be software related, not hardware.

  • IPhone 4s earpiece very quiet during calls, but normal in Voice Memos.

My iPhones earpiece is really quiet during calls, but I'm loud and clear on the other end. It's also weird because if I record a message in Voice Memos, and I play it through the earpiece, it sounds fine. I'm in 5.1.1, Jailbroken (shouldn't make a difference) and I even poked a hole in the little earpiece grill, which didn't help and didn't hurt. And yes, the plastic piece is gone, I've had this phone for close to 5 months.

Mine also has this issue. Its the 64GB version. It's happened twice now. After about 5 mintues the call quality degragates and it sounds like i'm in a wind tunnel. The person on the other end also hears this and it is no longer possible to hear each other. Both times i've been using the new headphones provided with the 4s. I've done lots of searching on this issue and only found your thread which leads me to believe its not a common problem. I'm just not sure whether its a firmware or hardware issue but as nobody else has this issue its more than likely a hardware issue! :-(

  • IPhone 4 Microphone not not working on voice calls but voice memos, viber, skype & facetime work just fine!! Any suggestions?

    Hi Everyone,
I have encountered the following problem which I think a lot of other fellow iPhone users are also encountering however mine seems to be fairly pecuilar.
    Here's the issue;
When making or receiving voice calls via my network operator's service, no one can hear me, i.e my audio input.  I can hear the person on the other end of the phone fine but they can't hear me whatsoever.
However when I use the likes of viber, skype and facetime, my audio input is perferctly fine and the person on the other end of can hear me.
Note both viber and skype calls work just fine and 2 way communication is audbile regardless if I have a 3G or Wifi connection.  Plus I have full singal bar strength when near a mobile tower so that elimantes antenna issues.
Also have taken alternative turns to cover both the top mic and the bottom mic during a viber or skype call and my audio input can still be heard.
I've done a reset, a hard reset of the phone and a reset of the network settings, still to no avail.
Have updated iOS to the latest version 5.1.1
Any suggestions would be much appreciated?
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem, I have already restored the phone and it didn't work. The microphone works with facetime, skype and the voice memos. What just doesn't make sense is that when I use my earphone's microphone when calling, it doesn't work either. If it was a hardware problem the earphone's microphone would have worked I suppose.
This is the second iPhone 4 I have. The first one shut off after 9 months so I got a replacement phone. The replacement phone lasted 10 months when the microphone stopped working. I went to the apple store and they just couldn't give me a solution. They understood my situation and told me that it was very weird but all they could offer me was that I had to pay for a replacement. This is absolutely unjust, why do we costumers have to pay for the companies mistakes.

  • How to use iphone as a microphone for the sound to come out in a bluetooth wireless speaker? what app?

well i want to do the impossible- i think. i want to know if i there is an app that will allow me to use my iphone as a microphone, for the iphone to be able to be connected to a wireless bluetooth speaker, and for the sound, to come out on the speaker. (the voice) without any cables. in order to do some fun stuff like karaoke or just talk.

    Hi redzknzz,
I see this has been up for over a year with no responses. Did you ever find a solution? I'm interested in something similar. The apps I've seen require the iPhone be connected to a powered speaker with a stereo cable. There are apps that allow you to connect to another iDevice via WiFi, which can then connect to the speaker. No output via Bluetooth yet.
    Have you found anything?

  • I have an iphone 4, how do I take stored voice messages and record them to a stick?

I have an iphone 4, how do I take stored voice messages and record them to a stick?  A family member passed away and I want to keep their voice.

    Hey there!
Sadly, there is no way to do this.
I'm sad to hear you've lost a familymember.
Try this: Move in a quiet-room. Play his/her voice over speaker of your iphone and record it with free recording-softwarefor windows or mac.
Hope this will help you keeping the memory.

  • IPhone 4 - Which microphone is used during video recording?

I was wondering if anyone knew which of the iPhone 4's microphones are used during video recording. I'm not completely sure but it seems like only the noise canceling microphone is used, whereas voice memos use the bottom microphone only.

Exactly correct. Why is was made this way, I have no clue.
I think both should be using the top mic rather then the bottom as that is were your hand usually is. I think it should be made an option.

  • My speaker does not pick up sound when i video with my iphone or use the speaker,  yet the voice recorder works?

  • Iphone 4. Microphone fails during calls

Iphone 4. Microphone fails during calls

Yeah -- I'm getting this myself.  Did you ever find a solution?
    Here's some more information:
    Microphone DOES NOT work when:
I make a call via carrier (typical method)
I receive a call via carrier (typical method)
    Microphone SOMETIMES works when:
I make a call via carrier (typical method), and then cuts out a few minutes during the call
I receive a call via carrier (typical method), and then cuts out a few minutes during the call
    Microphone DOES work when:
    Using recording apps (voice memos)
Make calls via data apps like:  Skype,  MagicJack.  I can use these apps to call/communicate with the person on the other end of the call without ANY issues.  Microphone does not cut out at all.  Works perfectly.
Tried To Solve Using The Following (To no avail):
Plug in / out headphones/mic.  This is functioning properly.  When I take out headphones/mic, and use the volume toggle, it does not show headphones as being plugged in.  Looks typical, and I can hear sound coming out of the speakers.
Tried using the external "speaker" option during calls.  This had no effect.  The speaker icon highlights, and appears as normal, but they still cannot hear me talking into the mic.
Switching Carriers in Settings > Carriers.  I tried hopping onto another carrier  (by disabling Auto), then moving back to my own Carrier.  Something to note... THe other carrier didn't allow me to fully connect to it.  I was not able to make a call on another carrier (I suspect this is normal).  I then re-enabled Auto.  Nothing helps.
    Reboot, Toggle Airplane-mode
    Latest Update (5.0.1)
    Sync with iTunes
    Summary Of Problem:
This is seemingly an issue while making / receiving calls through the carrier., but I've seen this problem a lot in other forums.  They've tried different SIM, and carriers, and nothing's helped.   I'll try a new SIM card next, though I don't see it as being a coverage thing what-so-ever.  My data works, and my mic WORKS --- just not during phone calls.

  • IPhone 5s Voice Call Issues

I've had an iPhone 5s (upgraded to 8.1.3) since mid-November and have been experiencing difficulties on voice calls ever since (I switched carriers as well). When calling specific contacts (family, friends etc.), the calls sound as though as I am on speakerphone, and there is a great deal of static and distortion present as well. The beginning of the call sounds as though the network is about to drop it before recovering it in a much lower quality. To the best of my knowledge, I have tried absolutely everything at this point, including: swapping the handset (three times), sim card (three times), resetting the device and even changing my number (was informed that it could have something to do with the "porting" of a number profile from one carrier to another). None of these moves have worked and I am still trying to decipher why I am encountering this problem (I have been in constant contact with my carrier who appears to have exhausted all ideas).
Any suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I was having the same problem and also loosing battery life - it suddenly happened.  I went online and saw where someone said to get rid of all the unused apps still sitting there, deleted all the old posts and yea!   suddenly the problem has been fixed.   Hadn't deleted the unused apps in quite sometime, so obviously draining everything.

  • IPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them

iPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them. Signal is strong and call quality (me hearing the other) is still very good but it looks as if I’m going on mute while I’m not muting my iPhone. When dropping the call and re-dialing it works fine again. It’s a brand new iPhone 5S but it now happened already 4 or 5 times in 2 days.
It feels like a hardware/iOS problem and not a network issue. It happend with iOS7.03 but I just see 7.0.4 is available so will install that one now.
    Thanks in advance for feedback
    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hello Jeff,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the audio on your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if the audio on my iPhone was not working unless using speaker phone.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this:
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speaker

  • IPhone 5s screen flashes on and off during voice calls?

Operation is perfect with every other app except whenever the phone detects I'm making or receiving a voice call. No problem on facetime.
The screen will instantly black out and to bring it back I have to press the main button, then screen will reappear but only for an instant before blacking out again.
It does not matter if the phone has been in standby or if I've been actively using it as the call comes in.
Its about the most frustrating thing I can imagine.
One clue, while I'm talking the phone will often mute itself as if my cheek activates the mute function.
I use no screen protector but I do use a case, it still does it when I take the phone out though.
It has done this since new and through at least one software update
    Any help really appreciated, thanks,

My wife rang Apple and while both of us spoke to Apple on the land line using hands free and spoke to each other using our iPhone 5s we were able to see that my big paws shadowed the proximity sensor each time I moved in to stab a button! Problem solved! I didn't even know there was a proximity sensor and your reply would have led me to it, thanks.

In the Music tab of iTunes, do you have 'Include Voice Memos' checked?
