  • IPhone FAQ

There are a lot of questions being asked about the iPhone.  These are the most frequently asked.  We hope they help you in your research of this nifty product.
Is a contract required to purchase an iPhone?
At this time, a two-year contract with AT&T is required to purchase an iPhone and activate its features.
Can I use my iPhone in another country?
Absolutely!  AT&T offers international calling plans for customers travelling abroad.  For those customers who will be using the iPhone in a native country other than the U.S., it is recommended to purchase the iPhone in your country as the service contract will likely be less expensive than an international calling plan from the U.S.
What are the upgrade and plan costs associated with the iPhone?
Current pricing for the iPhone can be found here. Remember that these prices require a new line of service and new two year contract.  Early upgrade pricing is higher and dependent upon eligibility.  You may find AT&T service contract information at AT&T’s site here.
Can I use the iPhone with my current service provider that is not AT&T?
Unfortunately, no.  Apple has an exclusive contract with AT&T for iPhone service.  The iPhone cannot be activated for any other provider at this time.
Can I use my old SIM card with the iPhone?
Yes! Apple includes a tool for ejecting the SIM card with the iPhone 3G.
Can I add additional memory to the 8 GB iPhone if I need more storage?
If you think that you will need more storage than 8 GB, you should purchase the 16 or 32 GB model.  There is not a way to add additional storage to the iPhone.
Can I trade in my old iPhone for the latest model?
While you may be eligible for an upgrade, your old iPhone will remain yours and cannot be traded in.  Your upgrade is the purchase of a new product.  You may certainly pass along your old iPhone to a friend or visit BestBuyTradeIn.com where you may be able to trade your gently used iPhone for a Best Buy® Gift Card!
How can I pay for the iPhone?
As with any other purchase at Best Buy®, you may use your Best Buy® Card, Reward Zone MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, cash, check, or Best Buy® Gift Card.
Does the iPhone have a camera?
The iPhone does have a camera, but it does not feature zoom and cannot record video.  Photos can be shared via email, but not through texting.

    Dear Verizon,
This is a direct quote from 2 days ago made by O***a (Verizon rep) in response to my instant message question.
"You will be able to use the early upgrade for the device.  The cost will be $199.99+tax for the 16GB IPhone 4 and $299.99+tax for the 32GB IPhone 4."
If there was no i phone, annual upgrades would be honored on any other phone next week. I really don't see why disallowing annual upgrades, then allowing them, then disallowing them for the i phone is even ethical. It's either a policy that you have or it isn't. If you expect customers to stick to their contracts (like they should) then you should stick by anything you put in it.  If it's not in the contract, then that's a different story. Do you just offer an annual upgrade for primary lines out of the goodness of your heart? Or is it actually written somewhere in print? I've never even heard of it until these forums and then your FAQ's. But if it does exist, then how is snatching it right now any different than snatching NE2 tomorrow? How would all you NE2 people that have been waiting patiently for a thousand years feel then? Please explain it to all of us if we are wrong.
I do know that all of the policies you had in place pre-i phone announecement should remain unchanged until customers sign a new contract.  You can then change them to whatever you want and customers can decide to re-sign or not.
Your life and everybody's life would have been easier if you guys would just have "business as usual".
    Sincerely,
    A. Customer

  • Can I use my Nationwide Messaging plan for the iPhone 4?

I currently have a plan called Nationwide Messaging (you get unlimited texting and data for $35 a month, and minutes are 40 cents each) which works well for me since I rarely use my phone to talk.
All the iPhone FAQ says is that you need a Nationwide plan, which I have, and a data package, which is already included in my plan. So will this work for the iPhone?

You'd have to upgrade to the smartphone version of that plan for $55/month since the $35 plan is for regular phones and it looks like they're are added requirements to be eligible for that one.
    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/messagingplans.jsp
"Who is eligible to sign up for the Nationwide Messaging Plan?
In order to establish your eligibility for the Blackberry or PDA Smartphone plan, please bring either a letter indicating that you are hearing impaired on appropriate letter head from your audiologist, hearing health professional, speech or language therapist/specialist, physician, surgeon, vocational rehabilitation agency counselor, teacher or credentialed therapist; or (ii) your membership card for the National Association of the Deaf, Hearing Loss of America, AG Bell, Association of Late Deafened Adults, Telecommunications for the Deaf, Inc or other similar group.
No eligibility is required for the $34.99 Consumer plan."

  • Have Ipad with MiFi, want to add Verizon iphone

I recently purchased an ipad with the MiFi hotspot device and have the plan that costs $35 per month. I only use it when I leave home since my current AT&T wireless is connected to the ipad at home. I would like to change from my AT&T cell phone to the Verizon iphone when it becomes available but don't understand how the WiFi might or might not be able to be used with the iphone. Is there a connection or would they require two separate "plans"?

I will be more than happy to provide you with some clarity about the iPhone today. The iPhone will require a data plan, but the cost and amount of usage had not been finalized. You will be able to use wifi for your device along with the data plan in order to cut down on the usage over the Verizon Wireless data network. You will be able to connect the iPhone with your MiFi device. If you like, instead of having two separate accounts with Verizon Wireless, you can add a line and plan for your cell phone to your current account. Here is a link to our iPhone FAQ's:

  • IMessage is not working properly on my AU/KDDI iPhone 4S in Japan.

I've got an iPhone 4 (AT&T) with iOS5, and just bought my iPhone 4S (AU/KDDI) in Japan.  I set up both phones with my iTunes Account information, but only the iPhone4 (AT&T) will give me the blue send button in Messages app when I'm messaging an iOS5 user.  Also, the Messages settings panel only has SMS option for character count.  It doesn't have all of the Messages settings as is on my AT&T iPhone.  Anyone having a similar experience?

I actually found the answer on AU's website.  It's in Japanese, but if you translate it, it says that iMessage is coming in 2012.

  • Can you buy the iphone with the at&t contract than cancel the contract?

Does anyone know or has anyone tried getting the iphone with AT&T and then canceling the contract? What is ATT charging for iphone if I do this and then cancel my contract? Seems like this is the only way to buy the phone outright without going through e-bay.

AT&T does sell the iPhone without a contract however it is still carrier locked.
    3G 8GB - $499
    3GS 16GB - $599
    3GS 32GB - $699
Also if they have a 3G 16GB still in stock then its $549.
This is all according to AT&T's iPhone FAQ:

  • No contract iPhone?

Does anyone know if it is at all possible, in any way, shape or form,
to get an iPhone without a contract?
    thanks!!

According to Apple, all iPhone 4's sold in the US require a contract with AT&T.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone#faqs
You should be able to purchase one at full retail directly from AT&T without extending your contract.

  • IPhone 3G post O2 unlock activation

    Hi there,
I bought my mates iPhone 3G off him last week to use with a new Tesco SIM only deal I have just got. However, the iPhone was locked to O2 so I went through the necessary steps with O2 to officially unlock the iPhone. Since it was my mates old contract phone he rang up O2 for the unlock and I asked if it was O.K to connect the iPhone to my iTunes when the unlock came through and I was told this is fine.
My mate got the text today telling him to connect the iPhone to iTunes and sync as normal which I did. At first nothing, so I reconnected the iPhone and it came up with a message saying "There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to active" even though my Tesco SIM card is in the iPhone. I've tried restoring the phone, but now I don't even get the activation message. Sorry about the long read... please help!
EDIT: I also now have on 1 bar of signal, where as before the unlock attempt it said "No service". Tried ringing someone but I get an instant failed call.
    Thankyou,
    Ally

I think what it means is, after unlocking you should swap the O2 SIM for a non-O2 SIM and then sync as normal... At least that's what I did when I got mine unlocked.
One of the O2 iPhone FAQs says:
+We may not be able to unlock your iPhone for a variety of reasons. Here's a few common ones:+
+• We can't locate your iPhone on the O2 network. This may happen if you haven't 'synced' your iPhone with iTunes.+

  • Heytell app saying installed under App store but not in Iphone

    Hi all,
I am trying to get the Heytell app to work on my phone but under the App store it is saying it is installed, but i cant seem to find it anywhere on my phone? Has anyone else had this problem and worked out why or how i can fix this.
    Cheers
    Maddog6603

It may be hiding in a folder somewhere - if you have any folders for "Social Networking," you may want to look inside to see if it's there. Alternatively, you can swipe right across your screen until you see a "Search" field - type HeyTell in the field and, if it is installed, it should appear below the field - tap the name to open.

  • Iphone why would there be different modle numbers

was wondering why there are different modle numbers for the same modle phone my daughter has iphone 4and i have the same bith same color just different midle numbers and different writting on back these phones were new when we bought them they are not refurbished

    Hi Missy,
Do you mean the A number, or the M number?
The GSM iPhone 4 is A1332,  the CDMA iPhone 4 is A1349, the global iPhone 4S is A1387, and the China-only iPhone 4S is A1431.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/iphone/iphone-faq/differences-between-ipho ne-4s-iphone-4.html
Model A1332 - The Apple iPhone 4 (GSM/AT&T variation) features a flat glass body with stainless steel bordering along the edges.  This model of iPhone requires an AT&T MicroSIM card in order to place calls and access cellular data.  Check the right edge of the casing for the SIM card tray (Released in June, 2010).
Model A1349 - The Apple iPhone 4 (CDMA/Verizon variation) features the same glass construction of the GSM model.  However, Verizon uses SIM-less cellular technology.  As a result, the right edge of the casing lacks a SIM tray (Released in February, 2011).
Model A1387 - The Apple iPhone 4S (GSM/CDMA) features the same body and design as the iPhone 4 but with more powerful features. Apple has added Siri (voice controlled intelligent personal assistant), which can be accessed by holding down the home key. The 4S is a world phone, which supports both GSM and CDMA networks (Released in October, 2011).

Different M numbers could mean a lot of things, like how many GB of RAM, provider, etc...

  • Buying the iphone 4 without the contract?

Ok guys I am aware that the starting price without a contract is $599.99
but my question is; I want to buy the phone as a gift, I do not want to have to activate it. I called my local AT&T, and they said that I have to activate it when I make a purchase. Anyone have experience buying it as a gift or who knows a way around it?

    HI,
    Check here. iPhone / FAQ's
See number 2 at the bottom of that page.

  • How can i find out which of  my contacts do not use whatsapp?

I am using iPhone 5S on iOs 7.0.2
I am conducting an event where I want to send invitations to almost all my contacts.
Since there is daily limit on the number of Text Messages I can send out in a single day in my country, I want to segregate my contacts into people who use whatsapp and people who dont.
So, for whoever possible, I can send the invite via Whatsapp, and for the rest, I can send across a text message.
Any insights on how to do that..?
    Thanks in advance.

I believed that the Whatsapp program looked at your contacts, and anyone already with Whatsapp info would show up in "favorites" under the Whatsapp program.  Is this not the case?  To do this, you would need to allow WhatsApp access to your Contacts.
Another thought:  Does Whatsapp info show up in the standard iPhone contacts?  If so, do you sync your contacts to iCloud, and have access to a PC?  On the OS X Contacts app (OS X 10.9.3), or in the web-based version of iCloud using a PC, I can type "twitter" or "gmail" in the search field, and it shows me all the contacts who have twitter accounts or gmail accounts.   After doing this, you could set up those contacts as a new group, so you
On my iPhone 5C using iOS 7.1.1, I can try and do the same thing in the search bar of the Contacts App; it works for "gmail", showing me folks having a gmail address, but not for "twitter".
I have no experience with Whatsapp, however, this may not work, and would depend I guess on that info being something that shows up in the contacts list on your phone.
The answer to your question may be covered in WhatsApp's iPhone FAQ:

  • What does the E mean instead of 3G?

    Hello!
Sometimes my iPhone switches to an "E" instead of 3G. I think it stands for Edge but what does it do?
    - Thanks in advance!

    It is slower than 3G.

  • Don't sell phones if you can't make them work.

Apple, I invite you to drop me a line and fix this mess. But don't call my phone, it's been dead for 32 hours and counting.

Don't you think this has more to do with AT&T sitting on their behinds than Apple? Apple is not transferring your mobile number or setting up the wireless service/account for you, AT&T is. Mind you, I have also been sitting here with a dead Verizon RAZR for 25+ hours now and a shiny $600+ paperweight, slowly but surely losing my patience, but I am not crying to Apple about that. What I did complain to Apple about, however, was the outright lie in their iPhone FAQs which clearly state that I should be able to use all of the features of my phone while I wait for it to be activated. Incoming calls, however, would still go to my old phone. This is not the case. I have a RAZR that tells me my number is not in service (ala Verizon) and an iPhone which will only allow me to make emergency calls, presumably to 9-1-1.

  • Credit card charged when I order or when the phone is shipped?

Will my credit card be charged when the phone is ordered (3 am on 2/3) or when the phone is shipped?  sorry if this has been asked.  i promise I searched first.

The official VZW iPhone FAQ gives us very little useful info but, it does state that orders will not be charged until the phone ships.
yeah that is the way I read it. and I hope that is the case...on the last two phones I bought they cahrged me the day the order was processed...the X I ordered at 12:03  am on the 15th and it was processed at 2pm on the 15th the charge showed up on my account at the bank at that time( my wife works for our bank  and called to let me know it went through)  I tried to order a Dinc   and my order got messed up when the screens ran out. My order got canceled and it took 6 days for them to credit my refund back... so I hope I read it right this time!
i'm guessing that may be in part why they have changed it. i doubt many people complained in the past when they would be charged and the product shipped within a few days.....but that htc incredible debacle was a joke. thousands of customers were charged for the price of a phone for a phone that they got a month later. i'm sure is was a customer service nightmare because if you've ever tried to cancel an order with verizon then you know you can forget about that. once the order was placed, they would charge your card. if you wanted to cancel it, you had to wait and refuse delivery, or take delivery and send it back. THEN you could get your $ back. i seriously called to cancel an order 2 hours after ordering a phone for my wife on the 800#. it couldn't be done.
