IPhone 6 Music Sync puts music on phone but I can't play from the phone

I synced my new iPhone sync using my mac (latest software). It took forever for iTunes to sync putting only one playlist on the phone (900 songs). I got in the car, connected the phone and can access only 4 songs. It shows all the songs but they are greyed out and the phone wants to connect to the internet to play any of them. What setting do I have wrong.
PS, the iTunes is very sluggish on the sync. Very bad experience. MAC is a 24 inch early 2009 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of 1067 memory running OS X Yiosemite version 10.10.

i synced both to my mac to see if they would come back and they do not. i looked at other forums and most of the people that had success getting them back used gmail. I do not. My email is verizon. The only notes that were on there before the sync were 2 short notes that look like they could have been from one of my kids (although they all deny they belong to them of course). now after the sync there are 4 notes all from december or this past sunday but the other 20 or so notes are nowhere to be seen. I suppose part of the problem could be that i really don't understand the icloud. I am really struggling to figure out how to use it. the other day i synced my ipad (because i usually enter all my calendar dates on there and they were not syncing to my iphone via the icloud and now i have duplicates of a bunch of calendar events. i am getting so frustrated. True by my description it would seem I sent them nowhere, but ten minutes later after turning on and off Contacts in the Cloud I got most of them.
I have the most recent one I added about 4 days ago but I'm missing some here and there.
I logged in with my Apple ID and it's the only one I've ever used.
Still a little weird.
I have synced my contacts with iTunes but not very recently.
I now have learned to do it often!
As far as I can tell there's no rhyme or reason for my missing contacts.
It's odd I would have most, but not all. So I must have uploaded something since I have some of my recent adds that were after my last sync with iTunes.

My ipod touch 4th generation has recently been telling me I need to connect to iTunes (i think). It has a symbol with a chord, and an arrow above it pointing to the iTunes logo. So I re-downloaded itunes, and I plugged it in to my computer. It told me that iTunes couldn't connect to my iPod because it is password-locked, so I have to put in my password. But I can't do it because of the stupid picture on the screen! I tried turning the iPod on and off, I've looked up and down the internet, etc. etc. The thing I thought might actually help was to put it in recovery mode, but I've tried that too, although the instructions weren't very clear on the apple website and I doubt the way it told me could have worked anyways. I NEED HELP QUICK!!!!!
If anyone could find a video on youtube telling us how to put it in recovery mode, that would be awesome too, but solving this quandary would be better.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

New ipod, music transferred from the library fine but I can't play from it

When you try to update the app, is the Apple ID that comes up the same as the Apple ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store?
Have you tried any troubleshooting steps? e.g. log in on another device, reset password etc.

you have to make sure that CFWD Bridge Mode under the Line tab of the SPA9000 where the SPA400 is registered is set to ALL...include VMSP Bridge and XFER Bridge Mode as well..power cycle then check if you are still getting one-way audio

also must mention i have never had trouble that i couldn't fix on itunes but all of this has started since i have been using icloud for basic backups hope this helps solve problem

I was having the same problem where only 1.7GB of 10GB of selected music would sync so I decided to start fresh. The following steps worked for me:
1. Open itunes and connect iphone 5 if not already. Uncheck all playlists, artists, etc. till nothing is checked to sync. Then uncheck the sync music box so that all music will be removed from the phone. Sync iphone
2. Eject device. Quit itunes (don't just close). unplug iphone.
3. Restart imac, macbook, or PC.
4. Restart iphone.
5. Now after power up, restart itunes then plug in iphone, check sync music and select music to sync. Sync iphone
6. It worked for me!!! Good luck.

I don't understand what's happening with my Music. All the songs that I purchased, that were previously on my phone, now show up a Cloud next to them, but I can't play them. If I touch the Cloud, it turns into a red square but never downloads.

Once you successfully add you iTunes library to iTunes Match, you go to Settings>iTunes & App Store on your iOS device and turn on iTunes Match. Your iTunes Match library will then appear on your iOS device.

When I am on a call in my car I can play and hear the music on my iPhone but when I hang up from the call the music reverts back to my iPhone speaker.

WIndows is asking you to reformat the iPod's hard disk because it's probably in the Mac OS X Extended Journaled file system format which the Windows OS can neither read or write to. Reformatting will erase all content from the device and rebuild the filesystem as FAT32 unless you specify it as NTFS (which you shouldn't do).
If you want to be able to use your iPod to copy music from your Mac to your PC, you'll need to either pre-format it as FAT32 using Disk Utility on your Mac and then copy everything over to your PC, or use third party software such as XPlay that allows a Windows PC to read and write to a Mac formatted iPod.
Perhaps you could take a look at this article for other ways to copy your iTunes library and files from your Mac to the PC.

First off try and go into your IPhone manually through My Computer and cut photos or anything you can through the device to be able to free space up so that you can continue to do what you want to do with ITunes. This way you will be able to create a backup or do what you have to do to manage your information, photos and texts on your device a little better.

You cannot manually manage music with match turned on on your iOS device. If you want to manage music manually, you will need to turn off match on your iPhone.

You may want to do a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes. The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes. This will erase the shuffle, re-install its software, and set it to default settings. If it's a software or data corruption glitch, the Restore should fix it. After the Restore, reload or resync your songs, and try it again. As a test, you may want to initially select a small number of songs to put back on the shuffle.
