Iphone 6 will not sync to itunes

I got my new iphone 6 yesterday.  Set it up and plugged it into itunes to restore the back up from my iphone 4s.  The restore completed and all of my contacts, texts messages, call history and photos were then on my new phone.  Yippee!    So then I went to sync the phone to itunes to download my apps and music to my phone.  itunes said "starting sync" with the little progress bar flashing below.  Then it went away and nothing happened.  Boo!
I restored the new phone to factory settings and tried again with the same results.  I'm now trying to download iOS 8 to my iphone 4s through itunes (it says "downloading 1 item.  14 hours remaining."  For serious?!?!?!    I need to get a better internet connection I guess) to create a new back up of the iphone 4s and do a new restore to the iphone 6.
I am using mac OS X 10.6.8.
My previous iphone was iphone 4s running iOS 7.1.1 (I hadn't downloaded iOS 8 to my old phone when I created the backup on iTunes).
And just before doing all of this i had downloaded the latest version of iTunes. 11.4
I was on the livechat with a support person for over an hour last night (no help, not able to fix my issue), and I have a phone call scheduled this afternoon.
Anyone out there have some secret answer/trick to all this????

I am running the same as you Jenny_Jenny, Intel Core Duo, 32 bit 10.6.8 etc. I initially tried what Jenny and someone on another thread said, I simply went direct to apple support & reinstalled the new version of iTunes. My iP6 was finally able to do something resembling a proper sync and reflect an appropriate backup date & time on iTunes.  However, none of the music & playlists that I had set to manually sync made it onto the iP6 (I have 128gb phone and have it set to only sync only the same music that was on my 32 gb 3GS so it's not like it's too much.  My notes are still not the same notes that were on my 3GS, My apps do appear to be more closely resembling the layout / order that I had on the 3GS, I should note that I had previously wirelessly downloaded my apps from purchased file in iTunes app on the phone because I was so frustrated with this USB sync issue.
So that reinstall did not work for me I don't think because I'm not getting the music over.  At least the sync isn't greyed out anymore but still, I'm very much broken.
Then I tried an iSync reset as another thread mentioned. Restart. No improvement noted.
Then I did the Kext delete that has helped a lot of people. AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext , I trashed it, emptied trash, restarted computer, and then did another download and install of iTunes 11.4 direct from apple support and no change or improvement seen after that. Still only purchased music from iTunes is on the iPhone.
I had lost the ability to sync my recently working with no hitches iPad mini too in this drama post 11.4.  Not going to make any attempts with it too until after iTunes launches definitive fix to this debacle. At least I've got a lot music on on the iPad already so I'm scared to try with it again until this is cleared up.
Thank you Jenny _Jenny & others for sharing your situation. Looks like I'm calling support tomorrow. Sad trombone. I normally wait a while to upgrade any products / software but I couldn't wait to retire my 3GS. This should be a happy time with a new amazing phone and I've spent the better park of 4 days trying to get this to just WORK the way apple products used to JUST WORK.

If you're using Windows try uninstalling iTunes and all of its components as by following this guide exactly: Windows XP or Windows Vista/7, then reinstall the latest version of iTunes.  You must follow this guide exactly or it will not be successful.  Note: uninstalling iTunes will only remove the application; it will not touch your iTunes library or data.

Restart your computer. Run iTunes and check for updates. If there is a later version of iTunes available, download and install it. Then try again. If you still cannot see your iPad listed in iTunes make a list of all the things you have tried so that we can see exactly what steps you have taken.

Tim, it was going through the motions but when it went to sync to songs it completed the process in less than 5 seconds.  And I have over 1700 songs I was trying to sync.  ooops !!    I just figured it out right after I posted the above post.  When on the "Summary" tab down at the bottom it was checked "only sync checked songs" .  Once I unchecked it, it started syncing fine.  SORRY !  :-)

Does iTunes not recognize the iPhone is connected at all? Connecting it should result in the immediate appearance of this iPhone icon:
    Have you:
    Tried a different USB cable?
    Tried a different USB port?
Tried logging in with startup items disabled (hold a shift key while logging in)?

  • New iPhone 5 will not sync to iTunes using wi-fi. Using cable OK.

I recently purchased an iPhone 5. Now, the iphone will not sync with iTunes via my home wi-fi where my old iPhone 4 did. I does sync using the cable. Is there something that I need to do?

It happened to me once.Basically I had to reset the wifi sync using a cable.  Try connecting your iPhone to your computer using a cable.  Uncheck the wifi sync box in iTunes, sync, then re-check the box.  Hit apply, then disconnect the phone from the cable.

  • Iphone 5 will not sync with itunes library

I recently got an iphone 5 and it will not sync with  my tunes library.  How do i get itunes 10.7 on iphone?

No, I believe it probably said you need to install iTunes 10.7 to SYNC the iphone 5. What version of iTunes do you have now? Check that by going to Help, About iTunes. If it is not iTunes 10.7, then go to Help, Check for Updates, and download 10.7. After that installs you can sync the iPhone.
