IPhone Access using AirPort Extreme

I recently tried changing the settings on my AirPort Extreme base station, thinking I would get a faster connection (after the changes it did seemed faster when I was using by MacBook Pro). But, I then noticed my iPhone no longer saw the network at all (I did turn Wi/Fi on/off on the iPhone, and the iPhone on/off, the iPhone still did not see the network with the new settings.)
In the AirPort Utility, after double clicking the base station - AirPort Extreme 802.11n (Fast Ethernet), then the AirPort option in the new window, then selected the Wireless tab, then I selected Radio Mode and changed it from 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) to 802.11n (802.11a compatible) then went to the Wireless Options button and changed the Multicast Rate to 24 Mbps....
Once I reverted to the old settings the iPhone could again see the network again. Is the "802.11n (802.11a compatible)" not supported by the iPhone? Or is it some other setting that needs to be adjusted?
Thanks for any insight.

The iPhone has a 802.11b/g chip inside. It _can not_ connect to either A or N networks.

  • How do I get a VPN acct accessed using Airport Extreme Base station?

I have PC running Windows 2000. For my job, I access a hospital VPN at home. In my home, I am able to set up the Extreme Base Station for wireless conductivity with computers in my home and all have access internet wirelessly. No problem.
The problem is that I cant get it all to work together. How do I configure the base station to recognize/allow the VPN client to enter my network?
I currently have WEP 128 on. The computer used for VPN is hardwired to the base station. Even with security turn-off, I cant access the VPN via base station set up as it is.
    help!
    PC   Windows 2000

I recently got my roommate's Lenovo t43p with VPN to finally work with my Airport Extreme.
    1. Open the Airport Utility
    2. Double click on your Airport Express on the left side to open up the panel.
    3. Click on the "Internet" tab and then select the "DHCP" tab.
    4. Click the "+" sign under "DHCP Reservations"
    5. Create a name for the profile like "XP Work Laptop" or whatever, and then click Continue
    6. You'll need to get your Windows laptop's MAC address which is sometimes under your laptop on a sticker, or you'll have to dig through XP's ridiculous Control Panel to find it.
    7. Enter your laptop's MAC address in the field.
    8. Lastly, in the 'IPv4 Address" field designate an IP address for your XP laptop that is within your router's range, if you're not sure of the range, the "IPv4 Address" range should be auto-populated with an IP address and you can just try it with that, or if it doesn't work you can change the last number to something higher but no more than like 4-5 digits more.
    Hope this helps, Good luck!!

Expect the Windows Firewall to block the connection attempt between the application and the AirPort, so you will likely have to turn it off to configure the AirPort.
The anti-virus program and Microsoft Security Essentials can do the same thing.

  • How do I access my airport extreme drives online

how do I access my airport extreme drives over the internet?

Here are the basic steps to share an AirPort Disk over the Internet.
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn,) and then, note the IP address shown.
    Select Manual Setup.
Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
    Click on Update.
To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:
From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
    Click Connect.
You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
    Click Connect.

I am getting a "connection timeout" message when trying to access my Airport Extreme with various laptops, Play Station 3 and Wii. My Airport Extreme is about a month old; it was working fine until about a week ago. Suddenly, the "timeout" is not allowing me to connect to my wireless network.

It could be that there's a new source of interference.

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:
Controlling access to your wireless network
A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

  • How to share files using airport extreme?

how can i share files between 2 computers connected to a wifi using airport extreme?

Suggest that you enable File Sharing on both computers. Assuming that you have Macs....
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Sharing
Enter a check mark next to File Sharing
Do this on both Macs. Then you will be able to access files one one Mac from the other Mac
If you have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n, it is also possible to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the Extreme. Computers will be able to access files on this "shared" drive.

  • Used Airport Extreme Show Old Location

I bought a used Airport Extreme 802.11ac on eBay. Now using any location services on Safari or Apple Maps shows me at the location of the seller. I have tried going into Skyhook and giving them its MAC address and my correct log/lat, but it has not helped. They say it should take effect immediately in most cases, but so far it has had no efffect.
Our iPhones pick up the correct location, so I have tried connecting my MacBook, and iPads to an iPhone's personal hotspot and also tried leaving both of our iPhones running both Apple and Google maps all day, and again this has not helped.
Is it just going to take a very long time for the databases that have that used Airport's MAC listed at the old location to finally pick up the new one?
Thanks for any and all advice.

Well, after waiting 4+ weeks I called Apple Support. (Luckily the Airport Extreme I bought on eBay was new/open box and with my dated proof of purchase Apple let me register it for the remaining warranty period. I mislabeled the original question as Used) A really helpful support person (like nearly every one at Apple I had encountered) worked with me.
We reset it again to factory settings, checked that my ISP provided Arris cable/WIFI router 's network showed my correct location (which it did) without the Airport connected,  then reconnected the Airport Extreme. But as soon as we reconnected it, both the Arris and Airport WIFI networks showed me back in the completely incorrect location. My support person consulted with another and they concluded that they needed to swap it out for a replacement, that this was not normal behavior after a reset to factory specs.
The replacement arrived today, and after setup immediately reported my correct location.

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..

Or any site that shows how to route internet through a computer.

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • Can you use airport extreme as a bridge to netgear wdnr4500 wireless router

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.I need to extend my wireless connections to the other side of the house

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.

  • I currently use Airport Extreme Wanting to extend using another apple airport express

How to set up Airport Express when already using Airport Extreme to extend range.

Extending the range of an 802.11n network
AirPort Utility makes it simple to extend the range of an 802.11n network if you are connecting another 802.11n base station. Connecting two 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations greatly simplifies the WDS setup process.
To extend the range of an 802.11n network:
Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the network name and wireless password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.
