IPhone and backing up to Time Capsule

Hi all,
New to this forum so please excuse if this is a stupid question, but my Time Capsule arrived today, have the wireless network all running nicely and various computers backing up to it, my next question is does anyone have an iphone backing up to one yet? Have the iPhone connected to the wireless network but can't see any obvious way to get it to back up?
Help is very much appreciated!
Cheers,
B

Your iPhone settings are backed up to your PC w/ each sync via iTunes. This information is then backed up to your TC via TM when your computer syncs.
There is no way to directly sync to the TC from the iPhone directly.

How do I transfer my pictures and videos from my Iphone and IPad onto my time capsule?

You cannot use Apple TV.. again the TC is not a media device and has no media extensions.
You can store video files on the TC.. but the ATV must work either via airplay so you run the video on an ipad for instance and send the screen view to the apple tv or you have itunes running on a computer.
BTW a WD live TV can play video files from a TC.. because it is a true media player.. the Apple TV is not a media player.. it is a streamer.

  • Time machine backup from USB drive connected and backing up to Time Capsule

Hi all forum virgin here, so be gentle.
I'll get straight to it. Much net trawling hasn't resulted in a definitive answer on this which surely I'm not alone in
I have: MBP networked to TC (where TM resides) and USB drive connected.
A- I simply want to TM backup not only MBP but USB drive on network as well?
As far as I can see there is no way of selecting this and after TM back has finished the only way I can check is
to enter TM (fancy space screen view) and obviously idrive doesn't appear in finder view.
I have tried connecting to MBP and obviously TM backs it up too and I can see in Enter TM. But I need this
drive on network so a further 2 things here:-
B- when I remove from MBP and TM backs up again will it see it's not there and delete as a change?
C- will it keep in previous backups if I cycle back to that particular one?
Andy help here would be most welcome

Sooner or later, yes, as LaPastnague says.  It depends on when the backups are done.  The first backup of each day is kept for a month;  all others are deleted after 24 hours.  After a month, the first backup of the week is kept as long as there's room, and the others deleted.
    Obviously not a reliable solution.
A better method might be to use a different app to back it up to the TC's internal HD, but that presents another problem.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSynch can do network backups (others probably can, too).
So you might be able to "reserve" some space on the TC's HD and use one of those apps.  As LaPastnague says, though, that will be relatively slow.
If there isn't enough room on the TC's internal HD, you could get another USB drive and connect it to the TC also (via a powered USB hub) and back up to it.  That will be even slower, though.

  • Wirelessly access and back up with time capsule

    Hi,
I know it is possible to access a Time Capsule hard drive through internet connection. Is it also possible to backup my MBP to the TIme Capsule hard drive through the internet?
    Thanks.
    Chih

Thank you, I just wanted to double check. For some reason I thought Time Machine backups could only pair with only one external HDD (or type of one).

  • CAN i connect m'y iPhone and iPad to thé Time capsule hard drive by wifi ?

    CAN you héliport please...

Yes, but you need a file app to use it. Look up file browsing apps for iOS.

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

  • IPhone 4 802.11n and Airport Express with Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule as my main wireless router, extended by an Airport Express (both are latest versions of the hardware and software). The Time Capsule is a dual-band version (2.4 and 5 GHz).
My new iPhone 4, which is supposed to be 802.11n 2.4 GHz compatible (unlike the iPhone 3Gx models) connects to the Time Capsule, but not to the Airport Express - hence no cover in certain parts of the home. There are no options for frequency when you extend a network - it's mostly plug and play from the main wireless router (the Time Capsule). What to do?

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +What to do?+
The iPhone does tend to remember the router that it is originally connected to.
If you plan to use the iPhone most of the time when you are in proximity of the AirPort Express, I suggest that you delete the current WiFi connection on the iPhone, restart the device, locate it near the AirPort Express, and set up a new connection to your network.
Works for me. May or may not work for you.

  • I have changed the name and password for my Time Capsule and now the Time Machine will not connect

    Mac Book Pro
    1TB Time Capsule.
Yesterday I changed the name and password on my time capsule and also the name and password of the wifi network as I was having problems with the speed of the internet when using Safari on any of my devices (1 Macbook pro, 1 macbook air, 27" iMac, iPhone and iPad) all other internet services were working fine (email etc.) This seems to have solved the problem.
However, since then, my time machine back ups will not reconnect and there is no option for me to reconnect to the existing back up for my macbook pro.
When I enter the time machine preferences it shows as below that there are no back ups.
Then, when I go to select a drive to use which should be the MacBook under the Backup disks the only option is for me to Remove Disk...
So, my question is, how do I reconnect to an existing Time Machine back up for my MacBook pro as I really do not want to erase and start all over again.
Warning - In my naiveté, I did click on the MacBook in 'Available Disks' but I got the impression that it was about to start a whole new back up and not work with the existing one.
(And does anybody have an inkling as to why there was a problem with Safari on all my devices? I downloaded Google Chrome and that worked fine).

    Simply reset the Time Machine.
    See A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can then mount the TC disk in finder after you reboot the computer.
You should be able to reselect the TC disk and then it will say it is going to start a new backup.
Ignore this.. when the TM actually loads the TC disk it will discover the existing backup and continue the backup.. but it will give no hint until it actually starts that it won't start a new backup. you just have to believe it won't.. and mostly it works..
Please also install the widget A1 so you have some idea what TM is doing.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Back up from Time capsule to External Drive

I want to move all of my media from my hard drive on one macbook to my time capsule. i currently use the time capsule with time machine to back up my hard drive. but, i have multiple computers. at home, i have a macbook and a macbook air. at work, i have an imac. i'd like to keep my photos, videos and music on the time capsule's hard drive, so i can access it from each computer. i have the time capsule registered with mobileme, so i can see the contents of it from each computer. presumably, then, if i put the media on that disk, i can access it from each location.
but, now i want to have a back up of all of that media. i have an external hard drive i can plug into the time capsule. my question is this: is there a way to use the time capsule as i have described and then have the time capsule's contents backed up to the external hard drive? if not, is there a way to put everything on the external hard drive, connected to the time capsule, access the content from all three computers, and then have the external harddrive back up to the time capsule?
any help would be really appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
No, Time Machine cannot back-up any network drive.
Your options are limited. See #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.

TIme Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.  Time Machine shows a message such as "Backing up 4MB of 9.00GB" but nothing happens for hours.

Are you really running 10.6.4 OS?
What model TC and what firmware?
    Wireless or wired?
    How is the TC setup?
If TM can work to neither a TC or external hard disk it is more likely the computer is faulty hard disk..
Do a verify of the disk.
    See A5 here.

Cannot do back up with time capsule.
I get an error message sayng that this disc is already in use. I have tried to wipe and restart but to no avail.
    What could be wrong?

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again

  • Backing up a time capsules to a remote device across internet?

    Hi
has anyone any experience of backing up the time capsule (backup and NAS) over the Internet to a remote device (either a machine, NAS or another time capsule)?
I'm trying to do a home (cheap) version of colocating the time capsule (primary location my place, secondary location/back up location my parents).
Just wondering if there is any advice since most discussions seem to centre around the archive feature via the USB port which does not help since I need to remember to take it off site!
    Any suggestions would be great
    Thanks

The only thing I've done with a Time Capsule over the Internet is to copy individual files.  It takes a long time.  I'd expect an attempt to copy a lot more would take an unacceptably long time.

  • Slow back-up on Time Capsule

I have had my iMac since 2009 and the same date for my Time Capsule.  I am a paranoid back-up person, so I back-up to my Time Capsule and I also back-up to an external hard drive via Firewire.  The same amount of back-up material takes about 5 minutes to the external drive via Firewaire and it takes about an hour to the Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule is connected via Ethernet and the Wi-Fi is turned off.  This has always puzzled me as to why the Time Capsule back-up is far slower.  Any thoughts?

You need to differentiate actual speed of file copying to the TC and back again with Time Machine.
Time Machine is a hugely complex piece of software.. and it has a lot of chatter between the computer and the backup.
Please look at how TM works in Pondini's great KB.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Also load the widget A1 in the troubleshooting so you can easily access the log. Here is a typical operation of backup.
There is loads of extras .. the copying of the few files in the incremental backup is the minor part.

    Backup completed successfully.
Ejected Time Machine disk image: /Volumes/data/minimeray.sparsebundle
    Ejected Time Machine network volume.
To check that the files are transferring at correct speed.. just copy a single very file using finder.. eg around 1GB to the TC and then back again and get the speeds.. you should manage 30-50MB/s .. anything much slower than that should be investigated.
But you need to allow TM as long as it needs.
