Iphone and photos not on camera roll

Hello All,
I hope you can help me ..
So our EVP of sales has a home IMAC and it was failing so he he synchronized his Iphone to grab all his pictures off of Iphoto to his Iphone.
Now he has them all on his iphone but now he wants to put them back on his iphoto on his macbook pro or new IMAC.
any thoughts , i know when i plug his phone into his macbook it only lets me move his pictures form his camera roll and nothing else , if I click the sync feature in itunes it wants to update and hes afraid the iphoto will over write his iphone and he will lose all his pictures.
Thoughts , suggestions

The sync/transfer process for photos from a computer to an iPhone is a one way transfer process ONLY - from the computer to the iPhone, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only.
Photos transferred from a computer are optimized for viewing on the iPhone as the first step during the iTunes sync/transfer process for this data - the original resolution of these photos is reduced.
Has the home iMac completely failed yet? If no, he needs to use an external drive for transferring these photos - he can copy the iPhoto Library folder and place the folder in the same location on his MBP with iPhoto quit when doing so.
There are 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring these photos in the opposite direction but such utilities are not supported by Apple and the original resolution of these photos will be lost.

How to delete photos not in camera roll?

The only way to delete photos NOT in the camera roll is to sync the phone with those photos deselcted.
@iLikeCheesyStuff:  The photo stream photos are in the camera roll  as well.  The OP is referring to photos synced to his phone, which can't be deleted directly on the phone.

  • Managing photos on iPhone and iPad - deleting from camera roll

I have a iPhone 4s and an iPad Air, but no laptop or desk top. All my photos are currently saved on my phone and I need to clear space. Is it possible to delete photos from camera roll but still have them permanently saved in another album or on iCloud? Deleting them from camera roll, on iPhone or iPad, seems to delete them from everywhere.

When you delete a photo from the camera roll it is deleted from any albums that contain it.  This is because the albums don't contain actual photos; they only contain links to the photo in the camera roll.  When the cameral roll photo is deleted, the link to it is removed form any albums as well.
Also, photos only remain in my photo stream for 30 days, and if you delete a photo stream photo from your device it is also deleted from iCoud and all other devices.
Photos added to a shared stream will remain in iCloud indefinitely, the will be at a lower resolution than the original.  And the shared stream album will also remain on your phone.
For all these reasons, you can really use iCloud to archive your photos and free up space on your device.  Instead, import them to your computer while they are still in the camera roll, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  If you want to be able to still view them, get a Flikr account (or similar) so you can view them as a gallery from the web.

  • Where are all the "DCIM" folders on iPhone?  Everything not in Camera Roll.

I just finished stripping down all the DCIM folders accessible from a PC via Windows Explorer.  I'm really looking for answers on the "how to", not "why it is" or "it just is that way" please.
The DCIM folders (mine [iPhone 5 w iOS 7.x] shows 5, naming convention is beyond me).  These consist of the following...
Total files equals the total number of pictures/videos in Camera Roll.
         - JPEGs (iPhone Created, iMSG Saved, or Moved (file xfr/emailed) to iPhone & Saved to Camera Roll),
         - PNGs (screenshots)
         - QuickTime Videos (iPhone Created & iMSG Saved to Camera Roll)
What is not accessible in the DCIM folder, but visible via Photos & Albums on the iPhone, are the following,
         - Instagram
         - Facebook
         - User created folders, mine came from iTools
         - Access to Albums created on the iPhone
                   * If I organized on the iPhone, why can't I access that organization via the DCIM folder?
What I know, if a file/image is in a user created folder, I cannot access it from Instagram.  An image must exist in Camera Roll for Instagram to be able to access it... aka I have to save the file to Camera Roll.
iCloud & iTunes, are not answers to the question, "How do I access all otherwise PC-considered "DCIM" folders?" when the only access allowed is "My iPhone --> Internal Storage --> DCIM --> '5 Folders housing all Camera Roll images/videos"
As you can read, this is not a question "What is Camera Roll?", I just defined what it is above.
    Thank you!

Maybe this will help you with a description of how iOS sorts photos. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4221.
As far as creating folders while in Camera Roll, the camera roll is not really designed to store photos on a long term basis, hense why if something happens to the iPhone, you lose your photos. It is designed for you to import the photos to the computer and do your organization there, and then sync the photos back to the device via iTunes. Then, should something happen to the iPhone, your photos are still safe on the computer. The ability to create folders and arrange photos through the Camera Roll is rather new. I'm not sure how it handles them, but earlier versions just put a "shortcut" so to speak in the folders you created, with the original file remaining in the Camera Roll. I'm not sure how that may have changed, but I am not sure how it handles these folders now. Seems you have discovered some of this by your comment on Instagram.
I do know that in Windows, and from what I have read it is the same on a Mac, you cannot use Explorer to put photos back into the Camera Roll. While you can read from the Camera Roll, you cannot write to it with the computer. Someone may be able to dispute that, but natively through Windows I can be sure that writing to the Camera Roll is not allowed.
Regarding your comment about the SD card, it is true, despite the fact the iPhone uses Flash memory, you cannot write to certain areas of the memory, and as I stated earlier, the Camera Roll is one of them. While it will save photos from the camera, and will also allow you to save photos from email, messages or other applications, it does not allow you to copy materials from the computer. This is the way Apple designed it.
I believe I read in your other post that someone suggested you use the feedback channel, but in case I was wrong, here it is. If you want Apple to see your comments, you need to post there, as they do not participate in the forum. The feedback link is www.apple.com/feedback and then click on the appropriate link.

  • Does the iPhone save photos in the camera roll uniquely  in a serial order?

    Hi there.
Just to be in the safe side, and for backup purposes I want to make sure whether the iPhone ALWAYS saves photos in the camera roll uniquely in a serial order or not.
In other words, If I copied the photos on my iPhone to my PC and then deleted them from my camera roll and later I had taken new ones, then:
Is it going to keep on naming my the new photos sequentially  or is it going use the vacant numbers of the old ones. So that when backing up my photos again the new ones will replace the old ones?
    Please, answer me.
    Thanks.

They get a new unique number like img_XXXX.jpg

  • After downloading IO6, can't capture photos from Facebook. I get "save photo" instead of "save image".  While browsing, save image comes up and photos save to camera roll.  Seems to be a problem only on FB.

Downloaded IO6 on my iPhone 4s.  Now I can't capture a photo off Facebook to the camera roll.  When I try, I get a "Save Photo" tab rather than a "Save Image" button,  The photo does not save to camera roll.  For email images and Safari images, "save image" comes up and save to camera roll.  Seems only a problem with images on FB.  Any ideas?  Thanks

You launched iPhoto and from its Preferences you selected Connecting camera opens.....

  • How do I back up my photo stream album photos (not in camera roll) to USB?

Is their a way I can directly save my photo stream to my computer? I have deleted many pictures from my camera roll and wish to keep photos in their respective photostream albums as there are over a thousand!  The only way I can seem to do it is to save the pictures back to my camera roll and back up to USB as normal but that then duplicates any photos I haven't deleted in the camera roll?! Help!

How do I delete photos from my Photo Stream?
You can delete photos from your Photo Stream the same way you delete other photos from your device. Just select the photo you want to remove and tap or click Delete. When you delete a photo from Photo Stream on one device, iCloud will automatically delete it from the Photo Stream album or view on your other devices.
Note: Deleting individual photos from Photo Stream is supported by iOS 5.1 or later, iPhoto 9.2.2 or later, Aperture 3.2.3 or later, and Apple TV Software Update 5.0 or later. You will need to manually delete photos you downloaded to iOS devices running iOS 5.0.1 or earlier after updating to iOS 5.1.
The photos you want to keep, back them up on your comp or on another drive

  • Deleting photos NOT in Camera Roll

I cannot seem to delete photos that I have synced to the new 3G (not sure if there is a difference from the older iPhone).
I synced some photos and then realized it would be better to just have an "iPhone photos" folder on my computer. Now I want to delete those old photos off the iPhone. I have deselected that old folder in iTunes, but that does not remove them.
    What else can I do?
With all apologies to the regular users here, I do not visit that often. If it is not too much trouble, please post here and email to [email protected]
    Thanks.
    Todd

You will need to sync the phone again after you deselect the photos you don't want.
Also it is not a good idea to post your emails in these forums as you will get loads of spam if you do.

  • HT1386 I deleted all my photos in the Camera Roll folder,I created separate folders containing all my pisctures. When I sync my iPhone it shows that all the pictures are loaded. But nothing displays on my phone?

    Hey Guys,
I need some advice. I had about 9000 pitures and photos in my camera roll folder.
I wanted to manage all these pictures into separate folders for easier access.
I imported all the pictures onto my pc, and created and managed the pics.
I synced the phone and excluded the photos,as advised on the site.
The I disconnected the phone, connected again and included the pictures.
On the coclour tab it indicates that all the pictures are there, after syncing,
but on my phone, nothing appears.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way of importing my pictures
onto the phone and keeping the separate folders?
    Thanks,

If you don't find an iTunes backup as suggested above, another possibility is that the phone was setup to automatically back up to iCloud. You can go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage to see if your device name is listed there. If it is, the section titled "How do I restore an iCloud Backup if my device is already set up for use?" in the following link gives directions on how to resore it:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
Also, I'm sorry to hear you lost 5 years of pictures. Having them in one place (as you unfortunately found out) is not a good idea as all kinds of things can happen including loss of the phone. If you have a computer it is a good idea to periodically import them to the computer where you can see that they have successfully transferred to a second location. Following is instructions on how to do that if you want to in the future: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083

  • TS3989 My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

At 1.3GB available, your storage space is getting very thin no matter what you do further.  As long as you have the photo's in the camera roll saved on your computer you can delete them.  Just make sure first that they are in your photo software.  If updating in iTunes, just backup/sync first, then update, and that will save the camera roll in the backup as well.
At only 1.3GB you eventually are going to find yourself unable to install or update some app, or unable to take any new pictures, or some other limitation that will force you to free up space anyway.  So now, before updating, sounds like a good time to make sure everything is backed up or stored somewhere else, and clean house a bit, then update.

  • HT201302 I need more space on my iPhone to update to iOS 7.0.6. I was able to import and then delete my Camera Roll but not my Photo Library. How do I do that?

I need more space on my iPhone to update to iOS 7.0.6. I was able to import and then delete my Camera Roll but not my Photo Library. How do I do that?

To delete your photo library you need to connect to iTunes, then remove the selection for the images, then sync the device.
While you are connected to iTunes do the update through iTunes. It takes much less memory as the update is loaded onto your computer, unpacked, then sent to the device.
