IPhone as a PDA

Ok, so the true question is can i use the iphone as a pda and put MSOffice and other applications on it? Can you install such tools like Fugu and Chicken of the VNC to connect to your mac at home? It seems like there are a lot of games and silly widgets you can get for it but i havent seen much that will meet my needs. Can you use jabber msging on the iphone to run apps such as google talk or aim?

There is atm no (legal) way to install applications on the iPhone. All applications which are legal available atm are web applications. However, Word documents, Excel sheets and PDFs can be displayed on the iPhone as long as they come as email attachments.
Apple announced a software development kit for the iPhone to be published by end of February, so there should be third party apps available somewhen in 2008.

  • Morning All... is the iPhone a real PDA as good as say a Trio?

Qustion: Is the iPhone a real PDA... as good as say a Trio?
Now that the iPhone has 16GB can this device be used as a real PDA?
I'm looking for a bottom line answer / solution...

NO, the iPhone is NOT a full-featured PDA phone.
The biggest lack is a resident To-Do list which is something most Treo and WM users regularly use; and the inability to sync any notes or memos or documents from your iPhone to your desktop -- the other major PDA feature that makes it a no-go for most business users.
That being said, I have always used top of the line PDA WM smartphones, and I have managed to find workaround for almost all of the problems with the exception of document and spreadsheet use. But that is where my instant-on macbook pro comes in anyway.
Typical PDA features that are also on the iPHone:
    Calendar
    Contacts
    Internet
    e-Mail
Basic Typical PDA features that are sorely lacking on iPHone
    Tasks/To-Do list that is sync-able
    Sync-able Memos
    Document reading/writing
    Spreadsheet reading/writing
Advanced PDA features missing on iPhone
    Media streaming
    No flash on internet sets

  • Using iPhone to connect pda to Edge via Bluetooth

Any guidance on using the iPhone as a modem to connect to Edge for pda / computer ? I had this hooked up with my previous cellphone (Sony K790a) since I already had an edge account. Until Apple comes up with ActiveSync, I would like to continue to use this for Calendar / Exchange email.
For the Sony, I found all the settings easily on the web, but I don't see anything for iPhone . . . am I missing something ?
    Thanks.

This is called tethering, and you'll have to check if your carrier supports this feature.

  • Use iPhone only as PDA???

My current wireless service contract with another company expires July 20, and I would like to keep the same phone number for my cell. Can I pick up the new iPhone when the new version is released and use it solely as an iPod and also for contacts and iCal before activating my cell phone service July 21? Or can you only use all features of the iPhone after it's been activated on the ATT network?
    Thanks

I would wait to purchase an iPhone when your contract with your existing provider expires, but don't cancel your service with your existing provider at that time. Your service will switch to a month to month basis, which can be cancelled at any time after your contract has expired.
The reason for this, the warranty period on an iPhone begins on the purchase date, not the activation date. Since none of the iPhone functions work until the iPhone is activated, there is no point in purchasing an iPhone until your existing contract expires, or just before.
When activating your iPhone with at&t via iTunes, you will select as a new subscriber with an option provided to port a number from another provider, or with a new phone number assigned by at&t. You will select the former, and at&t will handle the number porting process, which will cancel your service with your existing provider at that time. If you cancel your service with your existing provider prior to at&t porting your number, you won't be able to use this number with your iPhone.

  • How much I can use out of the iphone without activating it, like a PDA?

What is the status of an iphone before activation or after de-activation (cancel the plan)? Could I use the iphone like a pda? With Wi-Fi, iphone is still a nice PDA, isn't it?

According the AT&T documentation, "In the inactive state it will not
make or receive calls, except for emergency calls. As well, the iPod, Internet, and Wi-Fi capabilities will not be functional until the device is activated."

  • Buy an iPhone but not use the phone part

I have a couple questions and I was wondering if anybody on here could answer them for me.
I want to basically use the iPhone as a PDA. I don't want the cell part because I'm currently happy with the cell phone service I have.
So is it possible to use the iPhone without having to sign up for a contract?
Like using the browser, camera, contacts, etc. but not having to use the cell phone part.
I don't want to really go for the iPod touch because it doesn't have the amount of functions the iPhone has.
Thanks a ton if you can answer my question!!!

No. It has to be activated and using a service plan with AT&T.
I don't want to really go for the iPod touch because it doesn't have the amount of functions the iPhone has.
Sorry, but the iPod touch is exactly for that, but you really can't call either device a PDA. THe iPod touch s a media player at heart, and the iPhone is a phone at heart.

  • Palm V & iPhone/Blackberry Conversion

I have used a Palm V for many years. It no longer will let me access the information stored in it. I have Palm Desktop 4.2.1 on an iMac running 10.3.9. I'm about to convert to 10.5. Can I transfer the information from either my Palm V or from Palm Desktop to a new iPhone or Blackberry PDA?
    Post relates to: Palm V

You may want to talk to Apple about how or if you can iSync with the Palm V device to get you data into iCal etc on you MAC, then you can sync to your iPhone. iSync is an Apple product so Apple would need to help you with this issue.

  • PDA plan

When I changed over from my uncles account to my moms account they made a huge mistake. AT&T put my iphone on a pda plan and i have 475 messaging overages when i was on a 1500 txt msg plan but i noticed that this is not because i txt over 1500 txt messages but because they put me on a pda plan and I dont txt over 1500. Also the MEdia Net/Internet(MB) says overage: 75.1 any had this problem before?

    at&t made a billing mistake.
You need to contact at&t customer service to have these charges credited, and the iPhone's unlimited data plan and the $10/mo extra for 1500 SMS re-established for your iPhone and account.

  • AT&T changing terms for profit

I received my last bill from AT&T.  In bold print on the first page was this notice:
"An eligible data plan is required for Smartphones (including iPhone, Blackberry, and PDA devices) per AT&T's Wireless Rate Plan Terms and Wireless data Service Terms and Conditions at: www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp
If you are using a Smartphone without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee."
When I went through all the trouble of getting this BlackBerry as my last upgrade, there was no mention of this policy.  If you look into this document, it shows a date after July 31st, 2009, you will also be billed a lot more for intermittent use of their services, such as texting, etc..  I hope someone with some legal connections can get a class action suit against AT&T for their deception!  If so, please include me.
    Solved!

Yes, I have heard of this coming, that ATT would be requiring a Data Plan for thier Smartphone (including BlackBerrys) subscriptions.
It is their company... they have a right to require what they wish, and modify the terms of use as they see fit.
Just FYI: it is nothing new among carriers, Verizon and Sprint have required it for years. Tmobile, does not, at this point.
And, what I am not clear about is whether they will require this if you bring your own device "off contract" to use on the ATT network. For instance, if you buy a BlackBerry with a two-year contract, you will certainly be forced on a Data Plan. If you bring your own device, will they? Verizon and Sprint currently do so.

  • Roaming Bad

Hi, I am trying to find a way where I can disable the carrier connection upon request.
Why? Cause if I am going to another country, I would still like to use my iphone as a pda, and use its wifi, without having to pay for roaming the minute I turn it on.
Some of you will suggest travel mode… well travel mode turns off wifi.. I want wifi to stay on.
If anyone know of any solution please tell me
    Thanks
    Eden

I may be way off base, however, it is my understanding that disabling data roaming only does that... disable data roaming - it does not disable voice roaming.
I've been on 2 international trips and have NEVER had a charge for voice roaming (if it exists) when data roaming is turned off. Even if it were true that voice roaming was separate, not answering calls would effectively do the same thing.
I'm not sure, but I think with data roaming turned off, you don't see any symbols in the upper left part of the screen.

  • I made my first call!

So this is my 4th iPhone. I've owned all prior versions. Today I had to visit an Apple store because I had an issue with my computer. After taking a look and fixing the issue, the Genius said I could also call Apple Care. I told him I don't have a phone at home. At this time he glanced at my iPhone and said what about calling from it. I said, you can actually make calls from it? I thought it was a PDA device!
So I went home afterwards and made my first call! I wish Apple would've advertised this as a phone too. I always see commercial for using apps.

    Modular747,
Lately I am having allot of fun in this Forum, in the iPad Forum I found someone that was trying to insert a CD on the iPad 2 to play music, an he was complaining that the hole at the botton of the iPad was to small and asking if Apple would fix that for him.
Now I find Someone that says that he already is in his 4th iPhone and post something like we can read above.
meaning that he have being using all his iPhones as a PDA and never made a Call in one Before.
I am curios to know what kind of problem he had with his computer.
I need to believe that he is just making a joke, please this is better than going to a stand up comedy show.

  • Initial Opinion of iPhone as PDA

Since the iPhone is really a full-fledged computer (it runs Mac OS X), it should shine as a PDA. But it doesn't. There is no global search ala Palm OS. Add-on PIM-like apps can't send pop-up alerts like SMS or Calendar can. That the Apple SDK doesn't allow this, but then didn't include any task manager is baffling. Am I supposed to carry around a Palm T5 and an iPhone?

I don't really understand these posts; the iphone is what it is, it either meets your needs or it doesn't. If it works for you buy one, if not don't buy one. This is sorta like complaining because you bought a new Porsche and then discovered that it didn't come equipped with a trailer hitch like your old pick-up truck (i.e., I paid $100,000 for this car and I can't even use it to haul stuff to the dump, they really need to fix that feature or they won't sell many cars at my trailer park.).
Hopefully, apple will ignore all the noise and keep building the device they want to build.

RafiqueMobile development is a bit more involved than simple WebCenter. :-)
In short, the best approach at present to have mobile access is to create a "mobile" site based on HTML5. You will likely need to re-design your application to be mobile-accessible, either creating a simplified WebCenter app/skin for mobile applications (e.g. the 320 px screen, etc.) targeted at the smartphone-type screen. This does not solve the feature-phone problem. (Nokia?)
The other approach is to use RESTful services that you can either use or create in order to serve mobile clients that are either native apps or HTML5/JS apps that are created with a tool like PhoneGap. (This would allow for non-web-browsing access.)
There are also some inklings that a new "ADF Mobile" is coming that will allow for a more ADF-like mobile development approach.
