Iphone as a satnav ???

I'm looking at buying an iphone to use as a satnav system, i love the large screen. I'll be conecting it to a bluetooth GPS reciever so that the iphone knows where it is. Has anyone else tried this and would i then need to connect to the internet to access a mapping site such as google earth or multimap or could i pre-install the software on to the phone so that i can use it even when i've got no mobile phone signal (i do a lot of work in remote places that haven't quite caughht up with the mobile age yet).
Good idea? Will it work? Any ideas or comment welcome

I am 99% certain you will not be able to pair an iPhone with a GPS receiver using bluetooth and use it as a satnav system. My iPhone would not even pair with my windows mobile PDA using bluetooth.

  • Using ipod and maps together on iphone 3G

I am trying to use my iphone as a satnav and music player at the same time whilst driving. I have a usb port to the iphone from my headunit. Which when connected shows the grey screen and works perfectly with the stereo when the iphone is shut down, but when the home screen is showing or maps (for sat nav) it freezes and stops playing music or closes maps and goes to the grey screen.
Can anbody help me with this or is this a fault within the new iphone as my old iphone was fine (not using maps) but any other application.

Yay! this has been resolved now. I had to restore my iphone on itunes and reinstall all software and music, all worth it, this now working correctly.

  • IPhone 5 what happened to the battery!

Took my iPhone to the apple store as I was having an issue with the mic it was intermittently not picking up so they said the only thing they could do for now is put iOS 7 on my phone I have been holding back for weeks I really don't like the look of it but thought if it solves the issue then I will have to get over it, I use my iPhone as my satnav as well and when I went to the store I had around 85% plenty to do what I needed to do and get me home again with around 50% left is the usual for the length of drive however after driving home again It suddenly went down to 10% what happened to the battery life?? I can't walk around with a generator in my pocket to keep it charged I then made my usual phone call at night which lasted 2 1/2 hours and normally I would be looking around using 30% tonight I used almost 80%!

recalibrate the battery, let it completely drain out to where the phone shuts off and then fully charge it without using it.

  • What's the best Bluetooth file sharing app for iPhone

I'm trying to find a good BT file sharing app for an iPhone 5. I've noticed that the iPhone 5 won't even detect devices such as other phones or computers with BT but seems to have no issue with BT accessories such as satnav. My iPod touch has no problem detecting any BT device which seems odd.
So, is there a good BT file sharing app availble for an iPhone 5?

You won't find any Bluetooth File Sharing app that will work with non-iOS devices. That is something iOS simply does not support.

  • Continuity Calls Ipad & Iphone

    hi everyone
I am wondering whether this scenario is even possible?
im kinda bored at the moment with the options for entertainment in the car.
I have a bmw e60 that has an idrive but nothing with it (just a screen with poor info, no satnav or music options). However, the car has bluetooth for calls - factory fitted, not a parrot.
I am wondering if this is possible:
I have an iphone (5,5s, or 6 at xmas). i am wondering if its possible to use an ipad mini in there.
the idea is (i can buy either the wifi model or the one with cellular). i am wondering if i can use the ipad mini as satnav and also if i could continuity/handoff my calls from the iphone to the ipad, which would be connected via bluetooth to the car. Music is not an issue, can play from the ipad on loudspeaker.
it would be be nice to have a screen. ill have to find a way to mount the ipad with the least damage to the console as possible, but again, thats if the above works.
is the ipad able to handle continuity for calls if its on 3g or using the iphone as hotspot? what if the ipad was 3g and did the hotspot that the iphone connects to?
it would be awesome if that could work.
Many thanks for letting me know if anything like the above could remotely be possible.

is the ipad able to handle continuity for calls if its on 3g or using the iphone as hotspot? what if the ipad was 3g and did the hotspot that the iphone connects to?
No.  Both devices must be connected to the same WiFi network. If one of the devices is acting as a hotspot to create the WiFi network, it can not also be connected to that network.

  • Thinking about getting an iPhone when released in UK

    hey guys,
hoped you could answer a few questions before i shelled out a fortune getting one of these phones:
    * is the 2mega pixel camera sufficient? The mobile i've got is 3.2mega pixel and images are pretty clear. I'm weary about 'downspecing'
    * can i bluetooth images and notes to my mates with bluetooth enabled phones? does the bluetooth stay on continuously?
    * how does the memory work? is there a memory card or is it internal memory? if so how big (MB?)
    * does it play realplayer and mpeg4 video files?
    * is software added to via downloads when the phone is hooked up to a PC?
    * can you get satnav on the phone?
sorry for the barage of questions but hey i'm keen
    thanks
    Starkey

You're right to be. The iPhone's camera is not bad, and is certainly capable of taking good pictures, but is not all that sensitive so when the shape of the thing is taken into account, it makes taking clear pictures in indoor settings rather difficult, and with the ease of smudging, bright images can also be blurry. Keep it clean and steady and it's OK, but not great. I use it as a way to document patch panels and data cabs, and it's fine for that, but in other situations it's just useful because I have a camera handy, not because it's good.
can i bluetooth images and notes to my mates with bluetooth enabled phones? does the bluetooth stay on continuously?
It isn't possible to use BT to move data. It is only for connecting to handsfree systems or headsets.
how does the memory work? is there a memory card or is it internal memory? if so how big (MB?)
It has fixed internal memory of 8Gb capacity (of which 7.7Gb is available for use).
does it play realplayer and mpeg4 video files?
Mpeg4, via iTunes. It won't play Real media or Windows Media files.
is software added to via downloads when the phone is hooked up to a PC?
No, you can't add software at this time, the platform is designed to prevent third-party application installation. There are many apps via web2.0/safari of course.
can you get satnav on the phone?
    No.

For the same reason my car hasn't got in-dash satnav, leather upholstery or a six litre engine. Because that's how the manufacturer chose to make it. If you are unhappy with the specs, don't buy one.
There is no information regarding any new iPhone.

  • More landscape apps on the iphone

Not sure if this has been discussed, but it would be really useful for more landscape apps and even a landscape home screen.
I have my iPhone in the car 90 of time its in use and its in landscape for my satnav as its easier to see.
Id really like to leave it in landscape and still be able to use/see it without constantly having to switch it back and forth...
Some apps that would be really useful:
    Phone
    Settings
    actualy that's it
    Thanks in advance
    Jay.

  • Iphone 3gs compatiblity with Tom tom sat nav

just got anew I phone 3GS - after checking it had bluetooth etc ; I assumed it would interface using bluetooth, with my Tom Tom not only for hands free calling but also to download up to date traffic information - as did my old Samsung SGH G600. The telephone calling is fine but apparently Tom Tom now tell me the sat nav units are not compatible with iphone for getting the traffic information downloaded via the internet.
I never dreamt (perhaps naively) that a major phone supplier like Apple would not automatically be compatible with Tom Tom.
Anyone come accross this problem and got a solution - other than buying a new sat nav or an additional sim card for my old phone plus a subscription or pay as you go cost of course!!

Thanks for info. I know there is/are an app(s) for this but not fully investigated it yet as I want to be certain I cannot just 'fix' my current problem and continue to use Tom tom with iphone as i did previously with Tom Tom/Samsung.
If I do look have to look for alternatives Tom Tom do a new satnav with 'hd traffic live updates ' which I understand does not need a phone connection at all - sounds interesting

  • Best iPhone Sat Nav for light use

I have to change cars this week, my current car has intergrated SatNav, new one won't.
So was thinking of getting a Sat Nav app for my iPhone 4. I currently have N-Drive but now can't find it on the app store. Is this good enough for me?
I would say that I only use it once in a while really, not heavy and everyday use. I've had Tom Toms and they see fine, but they are £50 for UK map only. Co-pilot is £20 big difference.
I like POIs as often go for trips with family, Co-pilot doesn't seem to allow you to load your own though?
Is map share on Tom Tom whereby it updates maps for corrections from users often? I think TT allows own POIs to eg from Pocketgpsworld?
I also for the few occasions like speed camera database, which I believe Co-pilot and TT do.
So any others? What are they all like as an expeience on a relatively small screen (integrated one was 6" screen)
    Cheers

Motion X GPS Drive app for .99 cents (US). Cheap, excellent, and only pay as you need it for the data which would be IDEAL for your use. I'm like you. Just need it once in a while.

  • Want to connect car GPS receiver to iPhone 3GS

    Hi,
Getting a little tired with the unreliability of the iPhone 3GS GPS reception in the car so I wondered if I could connect the receiver that is already built into the car. I changed the head unit (the SatNav was pretty basic anyway) for a Pioneer that allows me to control and play music through the car stereo from my iPhone and also lets me make calls via Bluetooth. Is it possible to get a Y splitter that would also allow me to connect the GPS receiver to give me more reliable Satellite Navigation?
Hoping somebody out there can help me.
    Steve.

  • Iphone 4 link to car

Hi, I live in Spain and bought my iphone here all instructions are in spainish and as my spainish isn't that good I have managed my asking family etc to get the phone working as I would like. However, now I have a new car, helpfully all info is in Spainish and the garage who supplied the car very unhelpful.
My car comes with built in satnav and has the ability to pair up phones. But I cannot work out how to do this with my iphone. The car is a Ford CMax.
    Any ideas?

I have car stereo also that has BT on it also. Pairing the iPhone to the car's BT is the same as pairing a BT headset. Turn on the car's BT first, then the iPhone's BT, and hopefully they will see each other and pair up. Then just put in the PIN, and your done. Thats what I did for 06 Scion tC, with a Kenwood Stereo that I had installed because of the BT feature. Driving along, and a call comes in and all I have to do is say "Answer", is very helpful.

  • IPhone cradle/case for motorbike handlebars & vibrations - safe?

    Hi,
I found something like this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150630876069 I understand it's fine to put it on the handlebars, what about constant vibrations? No word is said about it in the listing. Someone may think, that the SatNav units for motorbike survive, why wouldn't an iPhone? I'm not 100% per cent sure it's designed to sit on the handlebars and being shaken constantly. I understand I'll loose my warranty if something goes wrong in the iPhone because of being used on the motorbike handlebars...
    Thanks!

  • How to transfer application data from iphone

    Hi,
I've recently had to reload my windows PC meaning that I've a brand new itunes installation. I've just downloaded a satnav app I'd like to sync to my iphone.
The problem is that there are loads of apps on my iphone and if I click the box to sync the iphone with itunes it says that all existing applications and their data will be replaced on my iphone. I have transfered the purchases so I should get all the apps back but I don't want to lose the data.
Is there any way I can backup the data in these apps or selectively sync the satnav app?
    Cheers
    -Al

If you included your iTunes library with your computer's backup before reloading Windows (the iTunes named folder which stores all iTunes data) and placed the iTunes folder in the designated location - the same location before reloading Windows, you would not have to re-install all iTunes content including 3rd party apps.
You can't selectively install the satnav app from iTunes on your computer without all iTunes content on your iPhone being erased first, but you can download and install the app with your iPhone.
Application settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app is included with your iPhone's backup.
With your iPhone connected to iTunes, control-click on your iPhone in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
After all iTunes content on your iPhone is erased when syncing and the 3rd party apps are re-installed, if 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app is lost in the process, and I think it will be, you can follow this by restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. After the backup for your iPhone is restored, this must be followed by a sync to re-transfer your selected iTunes content including 3rd party apps. The 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app will be restored with your iPhone's backup.

  • Wish I'd bought an iPhone...

I can't believe the amount of work I had to do to get my N95 up and running properly.
    It's like pulling teeth!
Seems like Nokia haven't got a clue how to get a product to be up and running straight out of the box.
Updates, installations, non-installations (with maps grrr), software incompatibilty, password confusion (sync profile)...
They say the phone has Sat Nav... but only if you purchase extras to give you vocal directions...? It's not satnav, it's access to something like google maps.
I could go on and on.
I wanted a phone that would do what I wanted.
I should have got an iphone!
    Rant over.
Sorry for being so negative - just rather frustrated at this point in time...

    Hi,
yeah I've got over my irritation with the thing coz I've sat here all bleedin day trying to make it work properly. I now have OVI suite which seems to work fine - if only I'd known that in the beginning or if Nokia had given me the disk with that on instead of nseries pc suite.
Should've done my research re: voice navigation - got sucked in by the 'satnav' advertising.
I have no idea what you mean by S60 3rd edition but now things seem to be working, I may leave it a while before i research into that ;-)
I know updates are good - just that nseries pc suite wasn't working properly.
That was the main problem i spose.
Got a headache from staring at screens all day so gonna take me dog out for a walk to complete the saga!
    thanks for your response.
I was kinda ranting into thin air :-)
