Is it possible to use install the iphone as a modem on windows PC?
This is not about using as a personal hotspot or data tethering to access the internet, which i already know how to use.
i want to use the phone to dial out and connect to a remote modem.

  • Is there any way to enable rSAP, use the iPhone as a modem, create sms folders, and show the day's calender on the home screen?

    Hi folks
Had iPhone for a while and generally happy, but it seems I still need to keep my old nokia E72 because I cannot seem to use the iPhone as a modem, nor does it support rSAP.
Also, while I like the threaded sms view, I'd also like the option to create sms folders to stash away my banking sms info, all of which comes from different numbers, and filled the sms inbox with hundreds of messages.
Lastly, having the meeting for the day diplayed somewhere on the home screen would be great if there were a way to do it. Yes, I can go into calender easy enough, but unless I develop the habit of checking it all the time, I often forget about a meeting whereas on the old nokia, it was always displayed.
What gives with the lack of flash support? Maybe ol Steve dislikes adobe, but it seems like a serious lack to me. Even the old nokia has some flash support.
Given that, I must say I love the seperate calenders and contacts. It's great to be able to keep home contacts seperate from work ones, but still have them on the same phone. Email is great two - full html support seems like a given but it works really well.

rSAP has largely been supplanted by ABAP, which the iPhone supports. Most modern smartphones, including the iPhone do NOT store any information on the SIM.
SMS inboxes. Not much to say. I've never had a desire to do this. I understand it could be useful, but it's unlikely to change.
As for meetings on the home screen... Wait for iOS 5
Flash: it's not JUST that Steve doesn't like flash. Adobe has failed to produce a workable version of Flash for iOS. Blame has to go to both sides.  I say good riddance to it.

  • Is it possible to use the iPhone as a modem and pick up the internet ?

I wondered if it was possible to use the airport facility on an iMac G5 to pick up the internet from an iPhone placed near by ? THis would effectively make the iPhone a wireless modem ?
I've not got an iPhone yet and this would be really useful.
    Thanks in advance.

The iPhone does not currently support tethering. There was an app that did that, but it was pulled from the App Store after only a few hours of availability, and all such apps have apparently been banned.

  • How do I set up my iPhone as a modem for my computer and my iPad ?

How do I set up my iPhone as a modem for my computer and my iPad ?

Thank you. Does this mean I can get rid of the mobile modern on my computer and the pre paid sim card in my iPad if I choose? (data and plan considerations aside)

  • Using the iPhone as a modem

I am a current O2 customer in the UK and I have used various Nokia phones (and IR & bluetooth) to connect an iPaq and various laptops to a mainframe computer (ie. a modem on the end of a standard UK landline phone number).
At times I had to wrestle with O2 customer support to sort out the "modem" capability and it became apparent this ability was a configuration on my O2 account (I swapped between Orange and O2) in addition to the phones ability.
Most of the discussion here seems to be generated by US AT&T customers where it seems AT&T dont allow this sort of customer usage. O2 do.
So the million dollar question is, will we be able to use the iPhone as a modem in the UK to access other computers, with handhelds & laptops?
    Cheers
    Eric

for what it is worth, I asked O2 that question as for me it will be the deciding factor in whether I buy one or not. Their response (the relevant bit) is pasted below and is very non-committal as to whether they are not allowed to say or simply don't know.
+Thank you for emailing us to find out if the iPhone can be used as a modem.+
+I'm unable to tell you if you the iPhone can be used as a modem. For full detail on the iPhone, please visit the manufacturers website by clicking on the link below:+

So come on Apple, you have a technically near-perfect product, an eager customer base willing to cough up their money for your product rather than a competitors at a moment's notice and a complete lack of information from or interest on your part in providing the last little function of what your customers need! Even if the connection is only EDGE speed rather than broadband, for those of us who use your laptop products as a necessity on the road, it at least provides a way of connecting our laptops to the net to access functions the iPhone really can't do (such as databases and SOA access) and really wouldn't want it to.
Put everyone out of their misery and open up with the information we need and open up the iPhone to what it really can do.

  • Till my last software update on my MacBook Air I have been able to use my iPhone as a modem via USB. Now it's not working anymore. Other functions via USB are still fine. Any ideas???

Till my last software update on my MacBook Air I have been able to use my iPhone as a modem via USB. Now it's not working anymore. Other functions via USB are still fine. Any ideas???

The Mac was recently upgraded so it is the Mac, or is it?
Looking for a common denominator:  I'l start with wi-fi as the common communication medium.
    Known:
    A) Broken: iPhone —> wi-fi —> Mac.
    B) Broken: iPhone —>USB—> Mac.
    C) Broken: iPhone —> Bluetooth —> Mac.
    D) Working: Mac —> USB —> other USB devices.
    Unknowns:
    E) Test Mac —> wi-fi —> a non-iPhone router.
    F) Test iPhone —> wi-fi —> another wi-fi device.
Given not A, not B and not C either the Mac or the iPhone could be the culprit.
    1) E        |  F        : Non sequitur (deepens the mystery).
    2) not E  |  F        : The Mac is the common denominator.
    3) E        |  not F  : The iPhone is the common denominator.
    4) not E  |  not F  : All heck broke loose.
For case 1:  It would be something on the Mac that prevents it talking to the iPhone through three media even though it can talk to other routers over wi-fi.  That would be weird indeed, given the iPhone is talking to other wi-fi devices with no trouble.
For case 2:  All of the Mac’s intranet media broken (wi-fi, Bluetooth, and wired-USB) and at least wi-fi works on the iPhone.  Something weird is going on in the Mac.
For case 3:  The iPhone router function is broken.  Upgrade the iOS?  Test using another iPhone?
For case 4:  Throw everything in the trash and start over.

  • How to use iPhone as a modem for MBP

    bonjour all,
after looking up information about how to use my iPhone 3G as a modem to my late 2008 MPB i found a APP called NetShare that was removed by Apple for reasons unknown yet, and i was hoping that with a little luck there might be an alternative.
if you have any information please pass it on,
    Cheers,
    Sean

I'm from the US, and there has been no alternative because Apple doesn't want people to be able to tether on the iPhone just yet. Apparently they will be releasing tethering to iPhone users here soon, but Apple took Netshare down because of that fact.
Now I don't know if there is anything else available in Paris, but you might want to contact Apple or your cell carrier and ask them, they would have a better idea about it.

  • Connect iPhone to external modem?

Maritime and emergency workers need to access the web and email over a satellite connection when there is no cellular service available. Although this is a lot slower than a cellular connection, it is better than nothing.
Can I set up the networking on an iPhone to access the internet via a PPP connection over an external modem? I would connect the external modem to the iPhone using either a USB connection (virtual serial port) or to a serial port on the iPhone if it has one.
Does the iPhone have the ability to drive a network connection through an external modem?
    Thanks,

    neuruoanatomist,
Thanks for the suggestion. Would it be possible to set up a PPP connection over Bluetooth in order to save some power?

  • Using iphone as a modem for your home PC

I currently have a motorola slvr that I use as a modem on my home computer by connecting with the usb cable. It's the only way I can get internet at home right now.
Has anyone tried this with the iphone? I want to buy one in the next few weeks, but this may sway my decision.
    Thanks!!

This is not an option for the iphone at this point.

  • IPhone as a modem on old Windows computer

When in Stockholm I have access to an elder Windows computer wit XP. I want to use my iPhone 3GS as a modem instead of transporting my own mac from home. I heard I just needed to install iTunes on the Windows computer, but the latest version is to refined. I found iTunes 8 on the Apple support pages, but the download button wasn't linked anywhere.
If iTunes 8 for Windows would be all I need - where do I get it?

  • Iphone used as modem for laptop

Does anyone know if the iphone can be connected to a laptop and used as a modem (like a Blackberry) on the Edge network when wireless is not available? Thanks.

It is not legally available. And ATT charges for any tethering one does do. THere is an illegal workaround for this, that not only voids your Apple warranty, but could end up with a) a hefty charge from ATT for tethering (they charge 79.99 a month with a plan, but by the kb without one) and b) suspension of your service through ATT, and hence no iPHone (or any ATT phone) at all.
It is just plain old not available, and if you aren't afraid of either Apple or ATT legal repercussions, then a iPHone mod site would be the place for you - not here.

  • Using iphone as Broadband modem

does anyone know whether it's possible to configure the iphone to act as a broadband modem for Laptop computer to connect to the internet ?
    cheers

It is generally possible to enable or include Bluetooth profiles, such as the DUN [Dial Up Networking] profile required to connect a computer to the internet via Bluetooth by applying an approved firmware updater, but…
…as a practical matter, this just is not going to happen. at&t has no interest in promoting this concept, particularly at the comparatively 'discounted' data plan rates associated with the iPhone.
If DUN connections are really important to you, and you don't want to use a separate data card designed specifically for this purpose, take an inexpensive at&t supplied or unlocked GSM mobile handset capable of performing in this manner along with you, slip the SIM out of the iPhone and into your 'data modem handset' for the duration of your connection session. Be sure to watch how frequently you do this and for what duration, as 'unlimited' data is not really unlimited, with at&t data plans. There is no better explanation of this issue than that offered by the terms and conditions of your data plan…

  • Can I use my iPhone like WiFi modem witth my laptop?

I have a question.... Can I use my iPhone like modem WiFi (i need connect my laptop to iPhone to use internet).

The iPhone does not currently support tethering. An app that made that possible was available very briefly before being pulled from the App Store.
