IPhone & AT&T

Question

The only reason I had went with AT&T is because I want to use the iPhone. And I know that I could unlock the device and go with some other service, But I'd rather avoid that scenario and unknown problems.
However:
the iPhone is my only phone. Therefore, with AT&T I have only One greeting message when a call goes to voicemail.
There are a number of reasons why someone would call me:
for instance - business and also family and also personal
And callers I'd rather avoid (I'm Sure we all would like to avoid some callers)
It would be fantastic if I could have custom greetings and ringtones for Assigned groups using 'Address Book' software. And 'Contacts' app on the iPhone, and use MobileMe to keep it all synced up.
I used to have a cell phone years ago which would allow me to create a group with a specific ringtone, then go to a contact and assign it to that group. It was very easy and am sorry to say that I haven't seen that feature since 2002.
Couldn't we see this feature where I can create an assigned group using Address Book software and with it I can make custom greetings and ringtones and then easily associate a contact with a group assignment?
Also, wouldn't it great if some callers could be denied the privilege of leaving a message if we don't want them to?
I firmly believe that an Apple enhancement along these lines would be much more desirable solution. Don't you?
Seems to me that the Apple softwares 'Address Book', and 'Calendar' have not been given any kind of upgrade for years. Instead, Apple developers keep coming up with newer machines and new devices, but leaving the older softwares out to dry : (
I've been using Google Voice - but quite frankly I'd much rather avoid a third-party situation for this kind of function. The pitfall with this solution is that I must have a 'Google Voice' phone # (different from my cell phone #). I can give out to contacts this number which will allow me all its great features… But someone calls me using that number - I call them back and my cell phone number shows up. Then I must explain having two numbers, and that contact can bypass the Google Voice number which will negate the whole thing : |
Come on now, Apple… Love ya but, Google is kicking everyone's butts all over the place : (

The only other GSM network provider in the U.S. that comes anywhere close to AT&T in terms of network coverage and number of subscribers is T-Mobile. T-Mobile's 3G network is not compatible with the iPhone - EDGE or GPRS only along with no visual voicemail access. You are right about some unknown and known problems with this along with doing so being against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, not being supported by Apple directly or indirectly via these discussions, and voids the warranty.
