IPhone autocorrect is counter-intuitive

I recently got the iPhone 4S with iOS 6, my first iPhone.  I'm shocked by autocorrect.  Why would is it set up to operate exactly the opposite of what makes sense?  I like that when I type a word it gives me a possible correct spelling but instead of me tapping on the word to use it and continuing typing to ignore the proffered correction it assumes I've made a mistake and changes my word if I continue typing and dismisses its suggestion if I tap the suggestion.  This makes absolutely no sense to me, makes me stop constantly when typing and I have to think a moment every time if I do want to use the proffered suggestion.  So, two questions:  1.  Why the bloody **** did Apple Engineers think this was a good idea and are they going to offer a way to switch to the more common-sense way of texting and 2.  Is there an app that corrects this problem
BTW:  I always thought all those errors people made when texting with iPhones indicated some rather low intelligence people but now I understand its actually a design flaw.

I had to get use to this as well. When typing an e-mail or text, and the auto correct appears, if you press space it will insert the autocorrect suggestion.  If you tap the autocorrect suggestion, it will not be inserted.

The Format chart dialog > Pivot tab screen is slightly counter-intuitive:
    - The order of the options Y-Axis, Z-Axis (optional) and X-Axis is usually meant to be sorted alphabetically at least by my usual way of creating charts (by my usual standards at least)
    - The default chart displayed is small and at first impression, 3d graphs are not immediately intuitive (such as dashboards for example)
    - No options for creating a graph legend within the Format chart dialog
    - I'm not sure why X-Axis is given as optional
    - Using 3DBar. When removing a dimension from the Z-Axis after having enabled it and unchecking General tab > Show Z Axis label, the legend for the Z-Axis is still displayed.  This happens even after a manual Refresh.
Wouldn't it be great if the features available within the various panels (i.e. Java, HTML were standardized so that the user does not have to go through a training process for each screen?

you wrote "Wouldn't it be great if the features available within the various panels (i.e. Java, HTML were standardized so that the user does not have to go through a training process for each screen?", which touches upon a sensitive subject -- user training.  In the particular deployment that I'm involved in, we've developed our own user training.  As my project lead says in our training class "we're trying to distill three days of a BusObjects WebI report writing class down to 4 hours...", which we somehow manage to do by "choosing one".  A thing that we do explain to our users is that they may someday discover another way to do something (like use a right-click versus the menu we point out, etc, etc) which is fine, but for today we're feeding from the fire hose, so too much information in one day is simply too much.  We also provide our users with a handbook that has screenshots from reports they're most likely to encounter when using our deployment, so we build up a comfortable look and feel for what they'll be doing once they get back to their cubicle.  So, we take users aside to a learning lab, we don't let them use the system on their own until they've been trained (preferably face-to-face, but we do have certain cases where we'll do some training "over the phone" in a structured manner), and we provide a take-away training guide.
Just some thoughts for you as you move forward and try to provide your users with info.

  • A counter-intuitive optimisation result... can anybody shed some light?

    Hi,
I've been trying to make an asynchronouse PNG encoder as I am encoding some big and complex images that tie up even a good machine for several seconds. So, I thought, it would be easy to split out the processing of the ByteArray into chunks and process a new chunk on each Event.ENTER_FRAME.
    Well...
It was easy to implement (thanks Adobe for giving access to your source code!) but the results were counter-intuitive:
    1. Encoding a PNG image entire: Approximately 1 seconds.
    2. Encoding a PNG image in chunks of 100 lines: Approximately 1.5 seconds PER CHUNK and then FOUR or FIVE seconds to compress at the end!
When I tried this on AIR for Android, the results were even worse with the final ByteArray.compress() call taking more than FORTY seconds!
This is obviously barmy as it is taking a multiple of the total time to process everything _INCLUDING_ the .compress() call to simply process the .compress() call.
The ByteArray in Adobe's encoder is a temp variable encased in a single function where the ByteArray in my function is a class member that is populated at the start of the encode and then added to with each successive Event.ENTER_FRAME. That is the ONLY difference I can see at the moment (trust me, I didn't go messing with that code too much... it is strongly referencing the original). Is there any other reason people can see for the massive difference in performance for essentially the exact same lines of code?
    Thanks,
    G

    Oops!
I found the cause - I'd not updated one of my loops, so instead of running from yFrom to yTo, it was running 0 to length every time. So I managed to build a 29.6MB PNG file from 1.6MB of content!
    Anyway, done. Works nicely.

  • Applying changes to stacks, counter intuitive?

    Help says:
Here are a few tips for working with stacks:
Any develop adjustments, ratings, flags, or color labels applied to a collapsed stack affect only the top photo.
If you select a photo in a stack and add it to a Quick Collection or collection, only the selected photo is added, not the entire stack.
Both of the resulting actions seem counter intuitive. Assuming that stacks are clearly identified, I want all of the flags, ratings, tags, and adjustments to act on the entire group. Grrrr.

For me when I group a stack of photos primarily when they are sufficiently the same in a way that I don't need retain a view of them. Either multiple shots of the same subject, or from the same event. So more often than not I will want to apply changes to all as a set. I can't think of a reason I would want to change only the top photo. If I want to work with an individual photo, I will go out of my way to do that, but isn't LR supposed to help up when dealing with many many photos? LR is the rule, PS is for the exceptions, isn't that what we've been told?

  • Seems counter-intuitive to upgrade from QuickTime 10.3 to QuickTime 7 just to get to QuickTime Pro.  Is there no QuickTime 10.3 Pro?

It seems counter-intuitive to upgrade from QuickTime 10.3 to QuickTime 7 just to get to QuickTime Pro.  Am I missing something here?  Is there no QuickTime 10.3 Pro?

QuickTime Pro is based on the QuickTime 7 code, and requires it to run. The old QuickTime was initially intended for movie and sound bites, such as you might find embedded in a Web page. It was not intended for handling the massive size and quantity of current movie and music formats, and Apple had to work the code in odd ways to get it to run the latest content. Not being ideal, Apple decided to re-write QuickTime from the ground up. It has kept QuickTime 7 and its supported features (ie, QuickTime Pro) for compatibility, but is moving foward with the next generation of QuickTime, called QuickTime X. So far this does not have a "Pro" version add-on, and Apple has not indicated it is developing one. For now, if you want advanced features you will need to use software like Final Cut Pro, or a third-party program, which make these routines available to you. There are also a number of third-party tools that do similar features, without interfacing with QuickTime at all.

  • IPhone 3G not counting iPod plays--SOLUTION!!!

If you're iPhone is not counting song plays, check the following:
    1. Make sure you are playing the ENTIRE song. iTunes doesn't count partial plays. (PLEASE send feedback to Apple requesting the ability to set the threshold for how much of a song has to play for it to count.) http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    2. Ensure that you DO NOT have "Manually manage music and videos" checked in your iPhone summary within iTunes.
    3. If you use playlists that are set to only include checked songs and videos, uncheck "Sync only checked songs and videos" on the iPhone summary page within iTunes.
I went over these steps with an Apple Product Support Specialist (not just basic Tech Support) and the problem seems solved using the steps above.

    notyou wrote:

This one doesn't matter. My iphone keeps track and I have always had the playlist set to only include checked items, and have always had the main tab syncing only checked songs and videos.

  • IPhone loses play counts when syncing with iTunes

I would like to repeat the question from this thread, which has mistakenly been marked "answered".
When syncing with iTunes, not all play counts are transferred into iTunes. When I turn the iPhone off, it even forgets the complete list of played songs (it is even deleted from iTunes itself).

I have similar problem. Played podcasts becomes UNPLAYED after synch with iTune.

  • Well, this is counter-intuitive!

When I crop my pictures in Photoshop CS5.5 on Mac (10.7) the file size increases.  I was working in an appx. 500mb 16-bit PSD and after I cropped it (using the crop tool), the file size inflated to almost 1gb!  Why would that happen?
    thanks for you help!

Undoubtedly because you had some ungodly value in the Resolution field of the Options Bar of the Crop Tool.
Don't panic.  Click on the "Clear" button and try again.
    Simple user error (PEBKAC).

  • Counter intuitive way to bring out dark areas

    Original we want to fix
Shadows at 95 (looking a little flat)
Starting over, exposure set to 1.7, highlights at -100 (nicer constrast)
    Animated

And something a little more in-between if you care to try: Original (modified) + the other 2 in zip.
Note: You must import these in Lightroom to see changes to original, since mods are only in XMP.

  • IPhone 6 not counting flights of stairs

Isn't iPhone6 meant to track flight of stairs climbed? Health app showing steps but not flights. Anyone else noticed this ?

Found something else interesting tonight regarding delays of data in flights climbed. It was still not reporting accurately by this evening so I went into the health app, selected flights climbed, then show all data, picked a certain time of day that showed a flight and saw something interesting. The delay I had mentioned and others too can be seen in this data. Again by following the steps above you see the date and time the step/flight was actually achieved and then the 'Date Added To Health'. In some case I see this was added almost immediately (say within a minute of the action) but in other cases (today was a good example) I had a flight of stairs walk at 11am yet it was added to health (according to the data) at 2:20pm.
Now this may or may not be an issue, maybe the M8 caches this data and offloads at a certain point but it has me wondering if that delay may be causing data to either disappear or inaccurately represent. Take a look yourselves using the steps above and see what yours say, would be interesting to correlate if others are also seeing data not register between these gaps or delays.
Again don't know at this time if this is working as it should (delay) but it does make me wonder why some data is written immediately whereas the same data at other times is delayed. Maybe this is something that needs calibrating in a later update or indeed could be related to some of the health app issues Apple is already working but at least wanted to share what I was seeing on mine in hopes it helps.
Also for completeness I also noticed this delay in Steps as well again some recorded instantly, some delayed
    Thanks

  • Is Apple working on a fix for editing photos for wallpaper, call contacts with photo, etc? The iPhone used to be so intuitive for everything but that tanked with the ios7 upgrade

iPhone 5 was so intuitive before the update. Editing photos has changed for the worst-any word of a fix for editing photos for wallpaper? Not a work around, a fix. If I wanted this kind of photo editing I'd still be using my droid x.
Anyway to go back to ios6?

Is Apple working on a fix for editing photos for wallpaper, call contacts with photo, etc?
    How would we know?
What's broken that you think needs to be fixed?
Anyway to go back to ios6?
    No

  • HT1420 how do i find out what computers have been authorizied for my account? My account shows 5 should only be 2 do iphones count?

how do i find out what computers have been authorized for my account? I have had one stolen and one died but my account shows 5 pcs authorizied? how do i unauthorize a computer not in my hands?

Iphones do not count. Computers only.
There is no way to find out what computers.
Deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.

  • Step count way too high in iPhone 6 with ios 8.2

I had been using the health app in iPhone 6 to count steps, very successfully until I loaded iOS 8.2.  Immediately, the step count inflated by more than 10 times, and it's now recording something like 120,000 steps per day and 200 flights climbed.  Anyone else seen this?

My step counts look ok, but I have had some errors with flights climbed. Just today my phone is showing 17 flights when I have probably climbed 5.

  • IPhone auto correct vs Mac autocorrect

I feel like the iPhone autocorrect is much better than the Mac autocorrect... Is there something I'm missing here!?

Wow. So the autocorrect on Mac is different than iPhone.

  • IPhone 5s wireless connectivity issues, cannot upload files/state to iCloud, and supposedly needing to do so in order to get my files/state onto a new iPhone 6 Plus

I am trying to get my files from my old iPhone 5s onto my new iPhone 6 Plus. I am currently and have been using iCloud to backup my files/state. However, I believe the antenna on the iPhone 5s went kaput a few months ago, because the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, both, do not work at all, meaning, I have tried all solutions including, resetting network settings, restarting the phone, etc. This is problematic because, as far as I know the iPhone 5s needs to be connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to a Wi-Fi Hotspot in order to ask the internet, in order to upload current information/state to iCloud. Herein lies my problem.
I have used iCloud already, to download my current files/state to my iPhone 6, with a caveat, these are only the files/state from before the antenna supposedly went kaput. That means, that all of my files/state since that time, while still being on my iPhone 5s, is not uploaded to iCloud, which then means I do not have it on my iPhone 6 which was updated to the most current files/state that was available at the time.
    What do I do?
I have iTunes installed on a Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Computer, and I have made a backup on there. However, I have to admit, I find iTunes very counter-intuitive and very difficult to use/understand. And I'm mostly referring to the syncing/backing-up features. I know you have to have safe guards to protect software usage, but with this high-minded philosophy of minimalism, couldn't it be as easy as drag and drop? Even software syncing? USB syncing with iCloud, etc?

Thank you for the information. I checked out the section and read it through. From what I can gather, you can start your new iPhone from an itunes backup (Set Up Iphone > Restore from iTunes Backup), but, in my situation I need to add the Files/State from the old iPhone backup to the new iPhone that was started from scratch and has it's own unique Files/State, without subtracting from either. The problem is, that I don't want to subtract anything, and from what I understand about Syncing, if I am Syncing a new iPhone that's been started up, edited, has it's own suite of apps, etc. to an old backup of a previous iPhone, I am going to lose everything new I've done, as it will sync with the previous Files/State.
