IPhone backup encrypted, but no password set

It sounds like a common problem out there, but I haven't seen a response from Apple.  When I go into iTunes it shows that my backup will be encrypted with a password.  I have NEVER backed it up to iTunes, only to the cloud.  When I try to disable the encrypt option it asks for a password that I have never set.  Many others have said to try every password you've ever had for iTunes as well as your security code on your phone.  Oh and why not "000" and "1234" while you are at it.  None of these work.  It isn't the end of the world for me because I still have the phone and it is backed up on the cloud, but what is the deal Apple?  How can I get or set my password since I have never set it in the past?
Thanks

Hi there Tom,
I imagine that it would be frustrating to have an encrypted iPhone backup and not know the password or how it the encryption was enabled, but I do want to suggest taking a look at the article linked below. It provides a lot of great information about how encrypted backups are enabled and passwords you may want to try.

To prevent others from reading your mail, don't give them access to your account. If others need to use your computer for some reason, set up personal accounts, or a guest account, and switch to it before allowing them access. This is the simplest, and most effective, method.
Email message files can be read as plain text in TextEdit or any word processor.
To protect your email messages from being viewed by others while in your account, you would have to lock the folder, putting it into an encrypted disk image that required a password to be opened and mounted. You would have to double-click on the image and give your password to mount it before launching Mail then unmount it as soon as you're done. My guess is that you could replace the ~/Library/Mail folder with an alias pointing to the folder on the disk image.
It may work, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle.

  • I chose to have my backup encrypted but can no longer remember my password how do I reset the password function?

I have an iPhone 4S and decided one day to encrypt my backup function. Then after I started to receive information from my iPhone stating that it hasn't been updated in XX weeks, (actually now 23), I decided that maybe the problem was with the encryption. So I attempted to open up the backup using a password that I thought I had set up for it. But each time I tried this password and other variations of the password, I never was able to do so. I want to remove the encryption and have a straight forward backup if ever possible agian. I have tried everything I can think of to reset the password but without success. I would love it if someone could tell me a simple way of doing so, short of chanting mystical verses while swing a dead chicken over my head...(actually tried that too

If you're using iCloud via Wi-Fi or backing up to the computer it is automatically encrypted (but on iTunes you can choose to encrypt it or not) but anyways if deleting the backup does not work you and you cannot remember that password for anything else including you're apple ID (if you used it) you may have to restore it.

  • How to uncheck encypt iphone backup if i forgot password ?

I want to delete my backup password ( uncheck encrypt iphone backup ) but i forgot the password so i delete my backup and uninstall itunes to solve this problem but when i reinstall the itunes and connect my iphone to itunes its still want the password to uncheck the encrypt iphone backup ! how can get my password or how to uncheck encrypt iphone back up ??
    please help me

You are being a rediculous rationalizer.
If you can't change anything or help at all, why respond just to rationalize and twist what I'm asking?
And to assume I read the article before this happened was silly.
I am saying clearly, this is buggy  behaviour that should be changed.
Every other thing when you encrypt a backup, you are encrypting the backup, not disabling your ability to every make an unencrypted backup again if you forget those backup passwords.
I know you have no means to change it and absolutely nothing helpful to add I don't already know whch I indicated had you bothered to read instead of jumping in with the rationalizations and repeating what i already said.  You are just talking to yourself with rediculous remarks like "blame yourself" for not taking some article seriuosly I had not read and should not have had to, because it's a silly buggy quirk in the design I hope apple will address.
You must not work much with encrypted backups with other companies to not understand, usually, when you're encyrpting a backup, you're encrypting that file, not preventing yourself from ever making an unencrypted backup again if you lose the password.  Backups and the phone are two different things.  Please do not respond with unhelpful ignorance again.  You have no clue what you are talking about in terms of security implications.  Turning backups off would not let you "take apart an encrypted backup" if it's encrypted properly.  The encryption is in the backup file itself, which would have no affect on creating unencrypted backups after deleting the old encrypted ones.  I tried to be graceful but you really have no clue of the security implications and you are being very silly saying I should have taken an article seriously I hadn't read until I ran into this quirky behavior.  You have no idea what choice is.  Wow.  You know, it's possible for someone to want to change a password they forgot on backups without having to wipe out their whole phone config, messages, etc.  This in no way jepordizes the security of backups made with the old password. You are being clueless on this.  Please do not respond if all you have to add is rationalizations of how any other way would be insecure when you don't know what you're talking about.  You're snide remark that someone "does't know security" if they want to turn off encrypted phone backups or change the password on future backups, if they forgot it displays a huge amount of ignorance not worth trying to correct.  Apple's great.  Doesn't mean they don't make mistakes.

  • ITunes backup encryption issue

    Hello,
I've searched these forums to no avail so far.
The issue is that I want to backup my iPhone to iTunes (already have an iCloud backup anyway). iTunes has 'Encrypt iPhone backup' checked, but I can't turn this off as I don't know the password. I have looked in devices and there are no backups related to this phone as I had already deleted them before. I downloaded the program from this link http://www.recoverlostpassword.com/products/itunes-backup-password-recovery.html and selected the one backup which is my iPad but it said no password found.
Is there anyway to uncheck this box at all?
    Many thanks
    Jamie

    Hello Fezzzer
If you do not know the password, the next step would be to restore your iPhone and set it up as a new device. The article below will explain further.

  • Can't restore individual iPhone backup file via Time Machine

    Hello,
I was hoping someone here might be able to assist me. I seem to have lost my iPhone backup file, but when I access the backup files in time capsule under user, in library under mobilesync, I can't even make it that far in time capsule, all I get to is a sparse image file of the username, is there a way I can access these files without a complete restore?
    Thanks!

If you mean you're using the Finder, that's not how to restore from Time Machine.

  • Are there any alternatives for iphone backup extractor?

    Hi all,
I find that the 'iphone backup extractor' program is very useful, however it is quite annoying that they limit the extraction to 4 files at a time and that we have to pay in order to get our own data files propperly. :S
When I restore my old backup from iTunes, every new thing is gone, when I restore the backup I just made, the old backup stuff has gone. It just replaces each other.
Apple should have their own software like this where you can extract what ever you want from your old backups and transfer it on to your phone, such as contacts for example.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is any alternatives for this program, or any other way I can extract my backup files ?

If you're on a Mac, there is a "free" iPhone backup extractor, but none that I know of for Windows. You could always code your own program, that would be free.
Apple doesn't provide a mechanism to do this for the simple reason they don't want users screwing with the iPhone backup. Thus, none of these third-party programs are supported.

You can't reset it.  If you don't konw the password then you can't use that backup

  • I can't access my iPhone backup(automatic encryption) so will have to set up phone as new. Haven't been able to work out what password A has allocated so will all future backups be also encrypted unless Apple finds a way around this?

I can't access my iPhone backup (automatic encryption by iTunes, not through choice!) so am resigned to setting my iPhone 4 up as new phone, because I can't determine which of my passwords has been allocated. Has anyone else gone down this path and will all future backups also be encrypted unless Apple works out a way around this or I can work out my password?

You might want to try contacting Apple for assistance by going to https://expresslane.apple.com, then click See All Products and Services>iTunes>iTunes Store>Passwords & Security Questions>Lost or Forgotten Apple ID password.  They should be able to explain what's going on and help you reset the password for the old ID if necessary.  The call should be free.

You must first buy Snow Leopard from Apple: 800-MY-APPLE (in the US)
Make sure your system meets Snow Leopard's requirements:
Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" System Requirements
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
    An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

  • I forgot my encrypt iPhone backup password

I lost my password to the encrypt iPhone backup. How do I reset it? I don't need to restore my phone, but I would like to be able to access my future backups in case something happens to my iPhone 4s. How do I reset it and if I can't reset it, what do I do next to make sure all my data is saved?

    Hello AjaxTheCat,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the other possible passwords listed in the previous article did not work.  I would recommend that you read this article.
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support
If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you won't be able to restore from backup, and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • Help! I forgot "encrypt iphone backup" password

Could anyone tell me what can i do as i forgot the password of "encrypt iphone backup" i have deleted the old itune and dl a new one, but it doesnot work! My iphone cannot synchonize with itune now! Help!
    Thx a lot

If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync. If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device. But first, delete all iPhone backups listed under iTunes>Preferences>Devices.

The backup is corrupt, restore as a new device, then sync your content to the device.

  • Just got an iphone 5s, I'm trying to transfer info from old phone but it's for a password to unlock iphone backup, I;ve never had a password for this before. How do I get the password?

    Hi,
I've just bought an Iphone 5s, I'm trying to sync it to transfer all my info from my iphone 4 but when I click on continue to restore from this back up, it's asking for a password. I didn't have a password for the previous phone. Can anyone help?

If the backup you're trying to restore from is encrypted, & you don't know the encrypted passcode, the backup will be unusable & you will not be able to recover any data from it. Encrypting an iPhone backup is not done automatically. You, or someone, had to elect to encrypt it to begin with, and no, there is no default passcode.
Did you have an Exchange account on your iPhone 4? It is common for Corp. Exchange accounts to require an iPhone backup be encrypted. If you did, you might try your Exchange password.
