Iphone backup fails - "disk is full" w/ 200g free space

I am getting the " could not complete backup, disk is full " error when trying to backup an iphone 4, but there is plenty ( 200+g) of space free on the hard drive.  Any ideas?
( already restarted/cleared previous backups )
Thanks in advance.

happened to me once.
next step depends
do you have a recent good backup already?
anything backed up to the cloud?
which phone?
did you try update direct from phone or using Itunes? (newer Iphones will older will not)
send repy... I will look for it

  • I can't backup my phone due to lack of free space

I can't backup my phone due to lack of free space on my computer.  How do I resolve?  I just purchased a MacBook Air and I didn't have this issue on my old MacBook.

If the free disk space on your Mac is too small to backup and your iPhone then it has too little free space to run properly.
You need to start doing some removal of data to free up space on the disk drive. The data can be either deleted or moved to another disk drive. what ever you do leave the system files alone and work with the files in your Home directory only.
The first thin you need to do is to make sure you have a backup of the Mac first.

  • Disk Management Claims there is "Free Space" on Disk 0. Possible to merge it into main drive?

    Hello.
Thanks for having the time to read my post.
Recently, I was trying to Dualboot Windows 7 with another OS just to test something out(The Operating system was horrible.)
But anyway, when it was installing that OS, it took over 160 Gb memory out of my main drive and into a seprate drive for that os.
So when I went in Disk Management, I saw a hidden drive saying 160 Gb. I deleted it and now it's says under Disk 0 "159.83 Gb Free Space" in a green box.
I don't know how to merge that memory into my main C drive again.
    Thanks.
    son588

    Hi Son588,
Why is it free space instead of unallocated space? I guess the drive you have deleted is a logical drive in extended partition. You can try to right-click the free space to deleted it again. If there is no partitions, locating between C drive and unallocated
space, you can merge the unallocated space in to C drive with the feature of "Extend Volume" built-in Disk Management. If not, there are two solutions to solve your problem:
Solution1: Backup partitions which locate between C drive and unallcated space, and then delete these partitions. Then merge unallcoated space into C drive with “Extend Volume”.
Solution2: Extend partition with free partition manager software.

Why do I receive a message that states I need to change to my media sync settings on iphone when my summary shows over 3GB of free space? THe message states the amount of storage needed (610 MB), which is considerably less than my summary shows currently available.

    # Yes, if you go to accounts.firefox.org, sign out, you will now be signed out.
    # Sign back in, and you will be asked to save the password you entered.
    # This will save the password and autocomplete if you have this option turned on.
I am not exactly sure why the menu did not detect the password change or if it was stored incorrectly after you changed it? But after storing the correct password you can manage any duplicate passwords in the password manager.[[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]

  • IPhoto iPhone import failed but storage full

    Hi guys
I recently tried to import a rather large library from my partners iPhone - she's been sitting on a backlog of photos. This took a long, long time and eventually failed to import in iPhoto.
I cancelled and removed the iPhone.
However, my Macbok Pro is now almost full in terms of storage and it seems that this failed import added about 10-15GB worth of storage on to my machine, but I can't see them in iPhoto. Where could these files be so I can delete them?
    Thanks,

    Big Question:
How Big is your hard disk? How much free space on it?

  • Time machine doesn't delete old backups when disk is full

TM disk is 750GB. It tells me there is not enough room for backup…then I look into TM and find there ARE NO BACKUPS anymore. (There were a few days ago.) All backups are gone, except for one two days ago, which was when I began getting the "no room" error.
I assume I've lost everything, as the TM disk shows only the backup from 2 days ago. True?
Do I just format and start again?
Is there a fix for this "no room" message? (It says oldest backups are deleted when disk becomes full. But it doesn't do it.)
    Do people rely on this?

How much data is TM backing-up? (What's shown for +Estimated size of full backup+ under the exclusions box in TM Preferences > Options?)
Note that your Time Machine disk should, in most cases, be at least twice the size of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
It appears that Time Machine needed to do a large backup, perhaps a full one, for some reason, and deleted as many old backups as it could (but it won't ever delete the last remaining one, as that would leave you with no backup at all), trying to make room.
If in doubt, Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages for that run here, along with the amount of data that TM is backing-up.

  • Time Machine deleting backups, says disk is full when there's lots of space

I recently successfully duplicated the sparse disk image bundles for two computers to a 1TB drive. Time Machine has been working just fine for weeks with this new setup and was backing up normally.
Then I began getting "Disk is full" errors and Time Machine is saying it is deleting back ups to create more space. This is confusing as the disk says there is over 740 GB available -- our back ups are not even totaling 200 GB combined.
    How can I remedy this?
    Thank you.

    Hank,
I realized last night, after I shut everything down for a tornado warning form Hanna - no tornado..., that the spaces in the disk name were your immediate problem.....sorry
In addition to dragging the file, you can also type '\' as an escape character before things like spaces to say treat them as part of the name not, as in the case of a space, as a separator.
In your latest error message the term 'socket' implies possibly a link to use of a wireless connection. I seemed to have no trouble using a wireless link to re-size yesterday. I was pointing to a USB drive attached to the TC, not the TC's internal disk. You'd think it wouldn't make a difference, but......
I didn't want to mess with the live sparsebundles on the TC drive, and had copies for experimentation on a USB drive on the TC.... But today I tried it on the TC's drive via wireless and it works.
You might try a direct connection via Ethernet cable if you can.
In addition hdiutil has a -verbose option which you can add to the command line that gives additional detail and may yield a clue to the problem. It also had a -debug option that provides even more voluminous output which the man page says is "- debug and -verbose generate almost entirely independent outputs."
    The format is like this:
hdiutil resize -size nnnG -verbose /path...to..sparsebundle
The -verbose and/or -debug go after the resize verb.
The -debug output is truly humongous! Try -verbose first if you need the diagnostic output.
These might help us get you going.

    Thanks

    i tried all this thanks
i can not get past blue screen and message Your disk is full it needs to be emptied Please not I cant proceed past this message.
no matter what you tell me
Am i right ok in thinking that
when i went into disk utilities and chose to clean my free space i left it over one hour to do its stuff
i came back and there was no progress bar just the box so i quit the program and when i opened  mac mail the system just froze  i forced quit mail rebooted and blue screen death
Now when free space is being cleaned is it the same as windows dose the utility write lots of 0 on the hard drive then rebbot its self to free the space
basicly is my hard drive full of 00000  is this why im getting this message  because the process was interupted

  • "Startup Disk Almost Full" But 190gb Free?

So I recently downloaded a program (MCMap Live) to make an image of my Minecraft world.
I ran it the first time and it took up all my RAM like expected, but gave me issues.
So I try to run it again without any other programs besides Finder running and my Mac started puking out this error that my startup disk was almost full and I had to kill some apps or delete files.
I open Finder and it tells me I have over 190gb of free space...
I ignored the warning and after the program was finished and I restarted, my airport card stopped working. So I restart again.
The airport card turns back on, but now I can't run any intensive programs because that error about my startup disk keeps coming back and shutting them down.
Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?

  • Disk Utility Error - Secure Erase Free Space failure

I have encountered a problem which I can't solve: I've used the secure erase feature to wipe unused parts of the disk before without problem. Now I get the following error message each time I try to use Disk Utility to do so:
    "Secure Erase Free Space failed
Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error:
    Could not create temporary file"
I tried it with the hard disk on the computer, my external backup disk, and a USB thumb drive. Same error message in each case.
If anyone knows the solution I would appreciate the help. I've scoured these fora and the internet to no avail.
    Thanks.

Tried booting from another hard drive and running Disk Utility Repair Disk? follow up with Disk Warrior after that.
I would just do a full volume clone, reinitialize, and restore.

  • ASM disk addition math...free space with mutiple disks

    Hello all,
I'm trying to set up ASM for the first time, and I"m curious about how things work with regard to disk 'math' , mirroring and redundancy.
    For example I have disks a, b, c, d. Each are sized let's say 100GB each.
I create a data group DATA1. With it set to normal redundancy, I start off adding disk a and b to DATA1, and the free space is roughly 100 GB (for example, not accounting for extra taken for overhead).
Now...let's say I add disk d of 100GB more to DATA1, what would happen here? If I were in high redundancy and I had 3x disks, I'd guess I'd have 100GB free space, but, with normal redundancy, what would I get?
One step further, if I added both c and d to DATA1..would my free space available, with mirroring be 200GB or more or less?
Is it better to do two disk groups, say DATA1 and DATA2...with a and b in DATA1, and c and d in DATA2...and use both of them for the database...maybe separate data from indexes....flashback , etc...?
    Thanks in advance,
    cayenne

For normal redundancy the effective (or usable if you like) storage size is approximately the half of the total physical disk size you have added. When you add A and B initially you are introducing 200 GB of physical storage but mirroring will let you to use only 100GB. So if you add C and D together (I assume you will add them into seperate fail groups) your effective size will grow to 200GB in total.
Your question about adding a single disk to a normal redundant diskgroup has a bit wierd answer. SO I will demonstrate it.
    SQL> create diskgroup mydgrp normal redundancy failgroup fg1 disk '/dev/sdd' failgroup fg2 disk '/dev/sde';
    Diskgroup created.
    SQL> alter diskgroup mydgrp add disk '/dev/sdf';
    Diskgroup altered.
    PATH FAILGROUP
    /dev/sdf MYDGRP_0002
    /dev/sde FG2
    /dev/sdd FG1
    6 rows selected.
    SQL> select path,free_mb,total_mb-free_mb usage_mb from v$asm_disk;
    PATH FREE_MB USAGE_MB
    /dev/sdf 1997 51
    /dev/sde 1997 51
    /dev/sdd 1997 51
    6 rows selected.
Mirrored two 100g disks will form a RAID like group with an effective size of 100g and the other added disk will be by it self 100g and rebalance will occur from FG1+FG2(some of the primary extends will be in FG1 and others in FG2) to MYDGRP_0002. So there will be a redundancy for sdd and sde disks (one of them can be lost) but not for sdf (if you lose it eee. Don't lose it).
There is no problem in having one large DISKGROUP for everything (by large I mean 100 TB+) like datafiles, tempfiles. But for FRA (it is a Best Practice to have one) you should have another diskgroup residing on different physical disks (if possible different storage boxes). 2 should be enough but here are some other cases in which it is advised to create another diskgroup:
    - You bought another storage box with a totally different brand or model
    - You bought new disks with different sizes so your new LUN sizes differs from the existing ones
    - You need another level of redundancy.

    Hi,
I just got a new Macbook Pro and looking in Disk Utility in the partition tab it's showing over 13GB of "Free space" after the system partition.
Why is this space here, is it really free and is it OK to expand my system partition to fill it?
