Iphone Battery Problems - Randomly Turning Off

I've had my iPhone 3GS 32GB since around October last year and all has been well until about a week ago. I was on firmware 3.1.2 and my phone started to randomly turn itself off, even when the battery was displaying a high percentage. Before this I had also noticed that my battery seemed to be draining a lot faster than it used to.
In an attempt to fix it I restored my phone to a backup and so it put me onto the new 3.1.3 firmware. I thought this may have fixed it but its made it even worse! Its now turning itself off several times a day and the battery percentage jumps about from extreme to extreme (from say 70% to 5% to 59% etc). I took it in to an Apple store where they ran a diagnostic and it showed that there was no hardware fault.
Has anyone else had problems like this? And more importantly can anyone suggest a way to fix it?
All help will be appreciated

Jymoz - did you resolve this? Last week O2 replaced my 3G 16gb iphone with a 3G S version. I used itunes to restore the new phone with my old phone files & settings. But 4 times in the last 7 days the phone has randomly turned itself off. Either I'm using email, or a game or its just on the home screen and all of a sudden the screen goes black, I get the small circle used to show a page is loading, and then it turns completely off. I wondered if you solved your problem, or if anyone has any ideas about my issue? Thanks for any help.

  • My iPhone 3gs just randomly turned off and won't turn back on

I was just using my phone, and nothing happened. As of lately picture mail, and videos have been sending as a text message to other iPhone users even while connected to wifi. My phone just randomly turned off and won't turn back on. I just got it in July so its not very old and I have the hard protection case on it. Is there any way that I can reset it or something?

Hold the home and power button down at the same time.

  • My iPhone 3gs is randomly turning off

    Hi,
I got problem with mine iPhone 3gs, 32gb. When I use camera, surf the net, or use some apps(Facebook, Zynga poker, Tap Tap revenge) it turns off. Sometimes there are some lines at screen and sometimes it just turns off. If first case I have to hold power button for 10seconds to turn off. After that it shows me charge battery simbol and I have to connect it to power source to continue using it. Every time battery was >50%, so empty battery isn't real problem. I guess it's up to software(I'm at 4.3.5, baseband 05.16.02)?
    Can you help me anyhow?
    Thanks everyone!

Did you use your latest backup to restore from after the new setup? If yes, try without the backup, it might contain corrupt data causing your problems. Also try the default apps first. If you experience not problems, load the 3rd party apps as well, maybe a couple at a time and see if one of those apps does not work as expected.
If this does not help, you should get it serviced.

  • My iPhone 5 randomly turned off and it now won't turn back on. It had around 80% battery life left. What can I do?

I have an iPhone 5 which I got around two months ago now, it has been working perfectly but it has now suddenly stopped working. It has randomly turned off and it now will not turn back on. When I last checked it had around 80% battery life left, and I try to charge it now to see if it will have some life back in it, but nothing happens. What do you think I can do? Thank you.

press and hold the top power button and home button on the front for 6-8 seconds until you see an apple appear, then let go.
    phone will start up now.
**Do not do this while plugged in to computer.

    Hello there, LaruaGalliers.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great troubleshooting steps for your issue:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Particularly:
    Battery does not charge
Verify that the outlet being used is working.
Try another USB power adapter if available.
If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
Try another USB cable if available.
iPhone or iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
If you see the image below, charge the iPhone or iPod touch with USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
You should see this image when iPhone or iPod touch begins to charge:
If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning the iPhone or iPod touch off and then on again.
If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Iphone screen randomly turned off???

Hi, my iphone 4 randomly turned off a few hours ago, it is not being recognised on itunes and it won't charge at all. To make matters worse, the home button has been broken for several months. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

You're going to need a functioning home button in order to fix this. Take it to an Apple Store.

  • My iphone 5 keeps randomly shutting off and won't turn back on unless I plug it in to the charger

my iphone 5 keeps randomly shutting off and won't turn back on unless I plug it in to the charger

I'm experiencing the same issue. It's one thing to have to re-power up but to not be able to do so without plugging in the charger when the battery is substantially full, is a real drag.

  • My iphone randomly turned off

my iphone has randomly turned off and i dont know why it did this? i have tried taking out the sim card charging it back up again. i tried turning it on and off but nothing is working?? i dont understand because my battery was full??

Plug in with Wall Charger for 30 minutes, it may start up on own. If not, keep connected to Wall Charger and Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until it starts up, usually less than 20 seconds time.

  • IPhone randomly turning off..

Does anyone have the safe problem with their iPhones randomly turning off...and having to plug it into the wall, or hold the reset buttons to turn it back on.

Try squeezing the phone right next to the vibrate/silence switch. Squeezing the glass to plastic in that upper left corner. Mine had a "loose connection" and the phone would just go dead. The "genius" squeezed right there and knew exactly what was wrong. He replaced it no charge, and it was about a week out of warranty. I asked him if it was common and he said, "no." I have to believe it is common. He didn't even finish listening to me and squeezed the phone and duplicated the problem. The replacement only has a 90 day warranty and is not eligible for applecare. At least I have a phone that works now...
