IPhone battery usage stats misleading ?

Hi All,
Something I've just noticed with recent firmware versions (I believe since 3.0) is that the meaning of the "Standby" figure in the time usage stats, has changed and become misleading.
It states "Time since lasat full charge", and has a Usage row and a Standby row.
Now I may be crazy but I'm SURE that the Usage row use to (before 3.0) represent the time that the phone was AWAKE (eg, in use and/or screen on) and the Standby time represented the amount of time the phone was asleep. (screen locked, no 3rd party apps running, waiting for a call etc)
For example it might say Usage 4 hours, Standby 6 hours, which meant that the phone was awake for 4 hours, asleep for 6 hours, for a total of 10 hours.
Not so anymore! Now it seems that the Standby figure counts both asleep and awake time. So in the above example the real situation is the phone has been 6 hours since last charge and 4 of those hours it has been awake.
So really the "Standby" field now means "Time since last full charge", and to work out the true standby time, you must subtract the usage figure from the "standby" figure.
Why would Apple make a change like this ? Surely this is a bug ? Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy ?
Regards,
Simon

This is how i understood the stats to be since the beginning. Had the first-gen and am now on the 3Gs.

  • Still No Battery Usage Stats

Hi folks, I've seen lots of posts on this but still haven't seen a good answer. I have had my iPhone since launch day. I haven't hacked it once. I've updated to 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 on the evenings those updates came out. My battery usage stats continue to say the following even after the battery charge indicator reads full-charge as indicated by the "plug" icon:
    Usage --
    Standby --
Is this a bug? Or does this indicate a hardware problem? Am I too late to get a replacement?

I've had the same issue since I fist got my phone. I called Applecare once and was told they are aware of the issue and it should be fixed in an update. This was about two days prior to the 1.0.1 release. I also visited the genius bar twice. First time I was told to do a software re-install. Second time they acted kind of clueless but checked a few employee phones and all we like mine, dashes only.
Here is what I've observed, or my timeline on this issue:
    - After buying my phone and noticing this problem I went to the Apple store and the 4 or 5 phones I picked up all had usage meter stats. Genius bar was closed but someone helped me anyway and suggested a software re-install (this was prior to 1.0.1
    - When I went in for my second genius bar appointment I checkout out at least a dozen phones and all had "charing timer" stats. Both meters apparently counting up (hours charged) and both identical. This was after 1.0.1.
If I do a restart while the phone is plugged in I get the charging timers instead of the dashes, but my phone acts up and once I restart again it goes back to dashes.
I've got good battery life. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update down the road. Bottom line is there is a warranty on the phone so I'm just going to stop worrying.

  • Does SMS relay iOS 8.1 cause extra iPhone battery usage?

I was messing with both SMS relay the other day and noticed that my battery drained almost twice as fast..
I was also messing with handoff and basically just testing the new integration features between Yosemite and iOS8.1
But my question is about SMS relay.. Does anyone know if this will us up more iPhone battery than if I wasn't using SMS relay and just SMSing from the iPhone itself?
Does SMS relay work via bluetooth? Could this be a cause for extra battery usage? It could be possible that I was jus using my phone a bit extra that day but I just want to make sure as I have SMS relay turned off for now, don't want battery life dropping..

I had the same problem. I realized that it had everything to do with my calendar app. My iCalendar was having a difficult time fetching information from my Outlook and Yahoo Calendar. Causing my battery percentage to decline at a very rapid rate. (50% in a 4 hour time frame). I resolved the  problem by going into my Settings >" Messaging , Contact , Calendar" Setting > Clicking on one of my selected Accounts ( Outlook or Yahoo) and turning off the Calendar Sync. The problem seemed to go away after doing this. Now I'm only using 4% battery life in a 4 hour time frame in StandBy Mode. Well I Can only hope that this will help resolve the battery drainage issue. Good Luck ....

  • IPhone battery usage normal?

So I've noticed lately that my iPhones battery isn't what it used to be. So I sat down today and pretty much reloaded the iTunes trailers page over and over again for 5 minutes over wifi, and my phone used up 5% of the battery... At this rate, my phone would go from fully charged to dead in a little over an hour and a half, while Apples website says 9 hours of usage over wifi.
Is this normal? I have the Bluetooth deactivated and brightness at around halfway. Also, I know that batteries are only good for a certain amount of charge cycles before they start losing overall capacity, does anyone know how to check the charge cycle count on ones iPhone?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    -Chris

Try fully discharging and then fully recharging the battery to recalibrate the battery meter. If that doesn't work, try a Restore as new, i.e. without your backup. You'll then need to resetup your email and resync your iTunes library.

  • Battery Usage Stats

Under Settings>General>Usage   the Usage and Standby blocks are empty.  How do I get these two blocks to show the usage and stanby time ?

I think I discovered it myself. If you charge the phone while it is OFF the usage stats won't show anything, the phone must be charged while in Standby. Am I correct?

  • Battery usage stats have vanished

    They both currently show -
It says they will be shown again after fully charged but it hasn't.
Since losing the counter I've charged it with battery life being under 20%, do I need to let the battery drain to nothing?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

try do a reboot, then charge until it's 100% full, then unplug and use for a while, it should have stats.
no need to drain to nothing, this usually happens when SpringBoard (the home screen application) crashes, a full recharge will solve it.

  • IPhone battery usage

I just installed BatterySense, in battery tips it wrote:
"Every now and then, use your device until the battery is completely drained then do a full recharge. This helps keep the battery fresh and can actually help the battery maintain its charge for a longer period of time over the lifespan of the battery.", I want to know that is it currect?

    Try restoring your iphone first.
Here is an article from the apple support site that will help.

  • IPhone 4 Poor Battery Life? (Usage stats included)

I've made appointments at the Genius Bar and they said it was okay, however when I called Apple they said it was low battery life for an iPhone 4 so I'm kind of left hanging. I occasionally play games, but probably no more than 10 minutes or so. I mostly just use data for internet. Brightness is on 1/4, fetch email every hour, never more than 8 apps left in the multitasking bar. iOS 4.1.
I compared with my friend still with a 3GS and it doesn't seem like mine is any better. I've restored it as a new phone and have done multiple charge cycles. Current usage is below.
    36% battery right now
4 hours and 26 minutes of usage
1 day 19 hours of standby
Is this normal? And if you can, please post your usage stats too. Thanks.

Battery life seems OK to me (iPhone 4 + iOS 4.1)
-Wifi always On (At home and work, day and night)
-Push Notifications On (Game Center, Sportacular Pro, Beejive IM, Facebook, Paypal, eBay)
-2 Exchange accounts (Gmail and work account. Fetching e-mails, calendars and contacts every 30 minutes)
-1 IMAP account (fetching e-mails and notes every 30 minutes)
-Location On (Used everytime I post on Twitter, which means often in a day)
    -Brightness 50% (Auto-Brightness On)

  • IPhone 6 Battery Usage setting not working.

When I go to my setting and check my Battery Usage setting it states: "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes". I've been using it for hours and I get the same response when I go to the setting. I've turned off my phone multiple times to see if that would resolve it, but it hasn't. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?

    Hello.
I have the same problem. iPhone 5, iOS8.0.2, used for a few days - still no usage statistics, only "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes".
I tried restore iPhone (DFU) without restoring backup from iCloud/iTunes, resets, hard-resets, erase all settings, drain battery to 0% and charge to 100% overnight etc. - nothing helps.
I wrote to the Apple about this problem.
Here is the page that you can use to contact with Apple and report a bug - https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Please, give the title of "iOS8 battery usage statistics not working" (or something like that), choose the "Bug report" and describe the problem. Perhaps it will make that Apple will eliminate this problem in the next version of iOS. More report - greater chance.

  • Problem with iPhone usage stats

My usage and standby times read the same. Whenever I use the phone for let's say 10 minutes the standby will go up by 10 minutes but its not the case the other way around so like usage doesn't go up when phone is I'm standby. Is this serious and is there a fix

Jay Davies - I am also running an iphone unlocked on vodafone but in Ireland. I have tried rebooting after doing the steps above and it keeps my usage stats intact now. Before it wiped out the stats if I rebooted - even if I hadn't installed anything. It also wiped out the stats if I didn't reboot at all between charges.
Those steps above fixed my phone for battery charge life and the usage stats so hope it might for other iphones also.

  • IPhone 6 Battery Usage function not working

Battery Usage feature continues to read; "Battery information will be available after using iPhone for a few minutes" even though I have now had the phone and used it for one week. Using iPhone 6, 64G, IOS 8.0.0.(no iOS updates have yet been applied)
A few days ago I attempted some suggestions posted by others. One of those was to let the battery drain to zero then fully charge. This had no affect on the Battery Usage feature. Another suggestion that i tried was to close all open apps on phone, then shut down phone and then turn back on. This did not resolve the Battery Usage issue either.
Is apple aware of this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Apple Watch iPhone app battery usage

    Hi Everyone,
Is anyone else finding that the Apple watch companion iPhone app is having a massive drain on their iPhone battery?
Since getting the watch, my iPhone is draining at about 2x the normal rate. When I go into the iPhone and take a look at the battery usage, it's the Apple Watch app that's absolutely creaming the battery.
As a bit of background, I expected this to be the case on the day I got the watch, given I was playing with it so much, but today, I've not done anything special on the watch or on the phone because I've had a busy morning. Even so, my iPhone will be drained by mid afternoon at the current burn rate.

Having the same issue. Burned through 50% battery without really doing anything. It definitely seems to be tied to how much you use the watch though
