Iphone blocks imac's internet connection

My iPhone 3g, with firmware 2.2, appears to block the internet connection for an iMac (Intel 2.66 core 2 duo, 10.5.5) which is connected to the internet via a wireless connection to a router. This happens intermittently, and stops when the phone is switched off, or the wireless is turned off. The phone can access the internet through the same router even when the iMac can't.
Any ideas why this might happen?

There are several potential causes for the symptoms you're describing.
If the wireless router is not setup to distribute IP addresses via DHCP or it is setup in bridge mode, you can have issues getting multiple clients on the network.
If the Ethernet cable from your cable or dsl modem is plugged into one of the LAN ports instead of the WAN port on the wireless router only one client at a time will be able to join the network successfully.
You didn't mention what brand or type of wireless router you are using. If it is an Apple AirPort Base Station, you can find troubleshooting info in this article:

If you are using another brand of wireless router, you may need to refer to the owner's manual or contact their support.
Another thing to try would be to power cycle both the wireless router and modem - removing the main AC power from both for 5 minutes and then powering up the modem first, and then the wireless router after the modem's LEDs are in their normal running state. If you have a VoIP phone system with your cable provider, the modem may have a backup battery inside that will prevent the device from resetting even when disconnected from AC power - if this is the case, contact your ISP for information on power cycling the device.

Can I share my iMac's internet connection with my Touch?

I have a DSL modem and do not have a wifi network setup. Using Lion, can I still share my iMac's internet connection with my Touch?
If so can you give me step by steps? Will this be something that I can turn off and on without interfering with my regular ethernet internet connection?

I Fixed my iMac slow internet connection

I will share with you how I fixed my iMac slow internet connection and frequently lost connection. At first, I thought it was the Airport but then it wasn't the case. I also had a Dell laptop in the same basement and it was running as fast as I expected. Here are the steps:
1/ Open Airport link on the top right window > Open Network Preferences
2/
Click + to create new Network Name and Security, I chose WPA personal - less security than the WPA2- that is why it runs faster.
3/ Go mack to step 1 and select your new network name > Apply.
May iMac is now connecting to internet as fast as I would expected.

My iMac internet connection is not faster but as fast as it used to be. I was using WPA2 and it was really good for a year and then I got disconnected or very slow. So I created the new network bearing the same old name but use WPA and did not delete the old one, some how everything is back to normal.

IMAC Wireless Internet Connection Problems All Of A Sudden

My Imac is well over a year and a bit old and has been able to connect to my wireless internet connection absolutely fine until the past week and a half. At first the connection wouldn't work and when I would turn my airport on and off and reset the router, it would eventually work, now that is not working at all. My airport status is either showing 'airport is turned on but is not connected to a network' or 'airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet'
I have formatted my imac twice and still no avail and the last format I tried to join wirelessly straight from boot but it wouldn't join saying 'there is a problem with the wireless connection and you're not connected to the internet.' the annoying thing is I can see the network sitting there and can't join it, my network is also unsecure so no need to input a password. All my home PC's and my Iphone and Blackberry find the network easily enough, although recently the Iphone has began showing only 1 bar of wifi connection.
I am at my wits end as I am unable to connect at all now, I am all out of ideas and have been bashing my head off a wall for the past day without any connection at all.
My router is a buffalo AirStation wireless G high power model, my IMAC is an intel core 2 duo 20", if you need anymore information of my hardware I will gladly provide it. I'm running MAC OSX Leopard 10.5, out the box as I've been unable to run any software updates as I can't connect to the internet.
Please, if anyone can shed any light at all on this issue I would definately try anything.

Anytime you see a self-assigned IP address in your network prefs you know it surely is a problem
with your router configuration. Power down all equip ... make sure modem is off for at least 5 minutes
restart modem, restart iMac ... check your network pref on iMac and make sure it's not 169.x.x.x
If so you will need to recapture the settings from your ISP's modem to the Buffalo.
Always use a secure wireless connection (WEP, WPA, WPA2) or else the whole neighborhood will suck down your bandwidth the slow down what your paying for. I use Time Capsules or AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Stations) that allow you to stealth mode and lower signal output and make the device
as a "closed network" ... meaning no one else can see and tap into your WIFI home network!
802.11N is better than G. and especially when you can use dual bands 2.4 / 5GHz to stop various home interferences. The backup of Time Machine only makes life much easier also! Xtech

I too have this problem but I've had it for about 2 years. We used to think it was because I was on wi-fi and I was getting interference. I moved the modem closer and that didn't help. Then my ISP kept telling me it was my Dlink modem so I chucked that modem out and went with my ISP's modem. That didn't solve the problem but at least my ISP couldn't blame it on other equipment. I then moved the modem right beside my iMac and I was still loosing the connection while on wi-fi. I got so fed up that I have hard wired my iMac right into the modem and it's still happening. Ive had my cable company out here a zillion times trying to trouble shoot this. They changed all of my cabling from the road to my house and from my house to the computer. They gave me a new modem and then they gave me another new modem but a different brand. I'm still dropping my internet connection every few minutes.
The one thing that I discovered with my provider is that I'm not actually loosing connection to the internet as they don't see my internet dropping at all. It's as if the signal comes and goes on this iMac and when it goes, I'm left with my curser doing the whirley-bird until it reconnects to the net. Usually takes 5 minutes or so but it eventually comes back. My wi-fi is fine with my iPad and my iPhone but it wasn't with this iMac. I've been on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion and I've had the same problem with all three OS's on this iMac.
I'm totally at a loss as to why this is happening. It's very frustraging and makes it near impossible to use online banking or booking flights etc because I can't keep a connection long enough.
Anybody have any brilliant suggestions to try?

New iPhone 3g 16gb drops internet connection (must be reset)

I just picked up an iPhone 3g 16gb Black and love it. Its truely an amazing device, however I am having 1 major issue.
The Internet connection constantly dies on me...
As an example:
This morning woke up, and downloaded an app from the app-store using 3g. Drove to work, and then tried to check my email. The phone gets stuck in a connecting loop in the mail app. I switch to App-Store it stuck trying to connect. All the while the little swirling icon is going in the top bar.
The only way to regain internet connectivity is to reboot the phone or go into the settings and disable and re-enable the 3g.
I am in a 3g area, my previous phone, an AT&T Tilt never had 3g issues...
I love the phone but this is driving me crazy...
Anyone have any advice or help?

One thing that might help.
When checking for email and it seems to keep trying to connect, hold down the home button and keep down until the iphone goes back to the home screen.
Also, you can reset the iphone by holding down the home and power button at the same time until you see an apple logo.

Certainly in the UK you will are likely to be given a free USB Broadband Modem when you subscribe and then offered the chance to buy an Ethernet Modem. Either way your iMac will be compatible. If it's USB then drivers become an issue, so you'll need to check the ths Internet Service Provider (ISP) will provide you with Mac support/drivers - some won't even though it's all simple stuff.regards

How to share iMac WiFi Internet connection without a router

I would like to know if I can link my iPod Touch (new one) to my iMac so that share my internet connection via wi-fi via Airport at home without a router.
I have tried to like my ipod touch to iMac by turning airport and setting up a new network, the ipod touch is able to pick up the wireless signal of my iMac ant the Airport status bar shows an arrow out which mean that airport is sending signal out but for some reason when I try to use Safari or Mail in get the following error message "cannot Open Page Page, Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet"
Also when when scanning for wireless signal with my iMac I am able to pickup my neighbours wireless signal while my iPod Touch is only able to pickup my iMac airport wireless signal.
What I am missing ?

1. Open System Preferences
2. Go to 'Sharing'
3. Click on 'Internet Sharing' (leave the box unchecked for now).
4. From 'Share your connection from' choose 'Built-in Ethernet'
5. From 'To computers using' check the 'Airport' box
6. Open 'AirPort Options' (bottom right), name the network. (Once it all works, go back and assign a password).
7. Now, check 'Internet Sharing' box and turn on AirPort. The AirPort sign on the iMac menu should turn into an arrow.

Imac losing internet connection

Hi my imac keep losing its internet connection, it does this twice in a couple of hours and everytime I put the mac to sleep, I have been into the network settings and put my wifi to the top of the list, but this has not helped. I have Mac OS X version 10.7.5 2.8 GHz intel core i5 and 4GB if that helps. Thank you

I have been having having a similar problem for the last several months. When I turn on my Imac about 70% of the time it does not connect to the network. I have to click on the Airport icon on the menu bar and wait about 5 seconds before my network shows up. Then I can manually connect to the network. Very frustrating.
One thing that has helped others but not myself is changing the multicast rate to the lowest possible setting. (Utilities, Airport Utility, manual, wireless, wireless options).

IPhone and IMac Will Not Connect Over Bluetooth

I've had an Iphone for a while and recently purchased an Imac. I've been trying to get my Iphone and Imac to synch through Isync over the bluetooth connection to sync the contacts on my I phone with the Imac. The Imac discovers and recognizes the Iphone, I enter the passkey to pair the 2 and then I get this message: "There were no configurable services found on your device."
If anyone has any suggestions on how to get past this I would appreciate it.

Firstly, you can't sync an iPhone over Bluetooth - that's why it won't work. Only via USB cable.
Secondly, you use iTunes for syncing iPhones, not iSync.
Bluetooth in the iPhone is for Bluetooth headsets, nothing else.

Will an iPhone use my laptops internet connection?

Possibly but as I said I'm not up to speed with Windows so I don't know how to get the networking options into the necessary state to accomplish what you need.
What if i hack the phone, can i find a third party app that will allow me to use my laptops Ethernet internet connection?
I have no idea. I suspect also that anything that involves hacking the phone would be removed from this Apple forum pretty sharpish.

Why does my iMac lose internet connection when importing music via iTunes Home sharing?

Hi, I tried searching for a solution but could not find anything to solve my problem.
I recently purchased an iMac and am attempting to import my iTunes library from my old Windows 7 laptop using the Home sharing function. As far as I can tell, everything works fine - both computers are connected to my wireless network, I can see and connect to the library, I can begin importing my music but after 5 or so minutes my iMac will stop transferring music and I can no longer access any internet sites, even though i seem to be connected to the internet. Turning wifi on and off allows me to access the internet again. I have tried many solutions, but nope seem to have helped. Both computers have the latest version of iTunes. I have tried disabling the firewall on my router, resetting the router, resetting both computers, reopening iTunes.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what could solve the problem? Thank you

I've noticed that Lion automatically reconnects in about 5-10 seconds after being waken from sleep mode.
Make sure that you've set you Network connections up properly in System Preferences and then, after waking from sleep mode, wait to see if it automatically reconnects.
In System Preferences:
Network / Wi-Fi:
Make sure "Network Name" is specified.
Advanced:
Make sure your "Preferred Networks" are specified. (The order is significant).
Also make sure that the "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
Also, you may want to try playing with the "Energy Saver" Settings in System Preferences, perhaps disabling sleep mode but turning off the screen (although I don't prefer this method since it kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a sleep mode IMHO).

My iPhone and iMac can't connect to my 3G wifi via my MacPro

Currently I have an iMac (on IOS 10.6.8 - haven 't upgraded it to new OSX yet); an iPhone 5, a Macbook Pro 13" (which belongs to work) and a new Macbook Pro 15" which I bought. To connect to the web, I use a 3G stick. Usually I plug that into the iMac and then share the connection to all my devices, but this works only for my iPhone and the work laptop. The new macbook Pro cannot connnect - it simply says "invalid password" which I know for a fact is incorrect - I've checked and reset the password at least 5 times. A friend said it could be due to the old IOS on the iMac and that I should purchase & download Mountain Lion and then try again. Though I'm not suite sure how to do this as I have limited data and I'd like to try see if there isn't another solution first.
Today I tried sharing the 3G stick wirelessly from the new Macbook - it works only for the 13" Macbook Pro but now it doesn't seem to work on my iPhone though I'm almost 90% sure that it used to. What's going on? I'm so confused. I feel like I'm stuck in Mac inception... Someone please, help!
