IPhone "Bricked" during 3.1.3 update

Hi, in order: updated to iTunes v9.0.3. Connected my 3GS directly to the mobo USB port with the OEM cord. During update from v3.1.2 to v3.1.3, iTunes pop up said unable to finish. Phone is bricked at this point. Powered phone down, back up, phone is bricked. Screen shows the "connect to iTunes" symbols. Tried to "Restore" within iTunes, same thing, unable to finish. Checked services and processes running. iTunes no longer see iPhone. Add-Remove-Programs>iTunes>Repair, reboot, iTunes sees iPhone again. Tried Restore again, unable to finish, phone is bricked and iTunes will no longer see iPhone.
I uninstalled iTunes, rebooted (XP 32bit), reinstalled iTunes v9.0.3. iTunes sees iPhone and that v3.1.3 is needed. Unable to finish. Ran restore, unable to finish. Phone is bricked. Any suggestions?

Interestingly, I had a very similar experience when doing this to my iPod touch, but not my iPhone 3GS.
My girlfriend has been using my iPod touch, using Windows XP to sync with iTunes and I had the same results. I ended up reinstalling iTunes, rebooting the iPod and laptop each and every way with no results.
I later found that plugging the iPod into my MacBook, it saw the iPod straight away, downloaded and installed the 3.1.3 firmware and it was up and running again.
In this instance, it seemed to be something to do with Windows XP. Don't know if this is what actually CAUSED the error in the installation, but it's all that I could work out. Haven't had any issues with the 3.1.3 firmware since, but here's to Apple releasing some much needed updates and changes to the overall UI of the firmware soon! I feel it's lagging behind a bit now.....

  • IPhone 4 bricked after 7.0.6 update, anyone else have this issue?

During the update to 7.0.6 the iPhone 4 failed to apply the update and booted up in restore mode.  When restoring the iPhone fails during the hardware firmware write and displays an "unknown error" Error 12.  It happens on multiple computers and versions OSX, including the latest version of Mavericks.  Apple support walked through after everything I tried failed and proceded to tell me that the the phone is broken and must be sent in for repair at a cost of $149.  So, unwilling to take responsibility for an update breaking a phone that was working perfectly before 7.0.6 update, that is how Apple's newest security patch bricked one of my phones.  Beware with the install!
I was wondering if this was common with others or not?  Have you had a similar issue, let me know?

Sometimes a hardware issue becomes apparent after a software update, and sometimes its pure coincidence. Most peoples updates will have gone well, forums show the small minority that dont unfortumnately. My 5s and my wifes 5c both worked fine for instance, even though thats no good for you, i'm just saying its not all phones and there is always a flurry of these incidents after software updates. Contact Apple and via the help line, if you have an extended warrranty as you say your phone is 1.5 years old. If there is an issue they will ask you to send your phone in, and an exchange can be made if you live to far from your nearest Apple shop possibly. If you are out of warranty then you can do an out of warranty replacement. As to it being a software issue, have you done a DFU mode restore? Hope it works out.

  • IPhone crashes during updates requiring restore & going over capacity

During the last two update 7.0.3 and 7.0.4 my phone failed mid update requiring a restore.  This is a major headache.  I am using an iPhone 4S and really don't have the time to keep having to restore the phone which takes a looooong time.
Moreover with the 7.0.4 update the phone mysteriously went from 1GB of space free to 500mb overcapacity.
Since I use my phone near capacity this is a real frustration for me.
Usually during restores if anything I find that the software seems to compact the space used when the apps are reloaded.
    Not this time.
    What happened?

I finally rid the error (Windows Firewall was blocking iTunes).
I did the restore but I'm still getting weird capacity ratings. They are constantly changing too.
Now it says it's not over capacity, but I have 0.36gb to spare - except it won't upload all of my songs and it's stuck at 3600 songs. When my library was 5700 songs.
Then after that, it said that everything was uploaded and I had 14gb to spare, which changes to 13gb to spare depending on when I connect it to my iPhone. (But again, not all of my stuff is uploaded).
So I know there's definitely a problem here, because the over capacity is not consistent.

From the article that your statement was posted from:
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
    Common errors: 1, 10-47, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1000-1020.

  • IPhone 4 froze during iOS 7.02 update

I just attempted to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.02 (from iOS 7) and had the phone freeze up during the verification of update process.
After disconnecting the phone from my laptop it wouldn't even allow me to power down the phone for a few minutes. I finally got it to power down and reconnected it to my laptop via USB sync cable and was advised by iTunes to restore the phone.
After restoring and updating the phone now runs "fine" (iOS 7 is just a little to much for my iPhone 4 I think) though rather slow.
    Current version iOS 7.02 (11A501).
Planning on updating to the 5s pretty soon.

    No,you're wrong....
    there is iOS 7.2
I updated my iPhone 4S few hours ago !!!!!!
Yesterday appeared a notification on my iPhone 4S for iOS update.
What I remember is first version of update 7.1 which was around 23 MB. I updated to the 7.1. After that appeared another version for update which was 7.2. So, I updated again to the last version which was 7.2. After finishing the update, the iPhone was restarting and turned off !
When tried to turn it on, it does not worked and appears a message (Picture message) that connect your iPhone to iTunes. When I connected to iTunes, it says you should restore yours to its original settings !!!!!!!!!
What the he**l is going on ? If I restore it, I would lose all my datas !!!

  • Why did my iphone brick while updating

Last night my iPhone 4s received a notice to update, so I accepted.  This was completely the wrong thing to do, as my phone is now locked in eternal "plug-in the usb to itunes mode"  My first attempt to restore failed.  I am now on my second attempt.  I saw where this was happening back in September, but this is November and it is still happening.  I can not express how aggravated I am, not to mention the productivity I am losing today as my phone sits useless and I have to spend all this time resolving this issue.  Is Apple fixing this problem?  Do I have to worry about my next upgrade?  Why can't I go back to the previous version, which WORKED!

You may need to try this More than Once...
But... if the Device has been Modified... this will Not necessarily work.

  • Preserving iPhone apps during iOS5 update

I want to get iOS5 for my iPhone 4. When I use iTunes to update , I get the following message:
Updating to iOS 5.0 will delete all of the apps on your iPhone. To preserve your apps, apply this update on the computer where you sync them.
How do I apply the update to the computet?

I transfered the purchases to iTunes and backed up my wife's iPhone 4, did the iOS 5 update, restored from the backup, and everything went smoothly.
I followed the same procedure with my iPhone 3Gs and lost ALL saved data of value.  It appears the various techniques to roll back to iOS 4 don't work, and the restore isn't working with moving the 3Gs data to my new iPhone 4s.
So at my location, we had a 50% failure rate with the update.  The new features for an iPhone 4 are essentially fluff, so I won't risk your data if you have something you want to save until the next service release of iOS 5.  If you don't care about any special app data, photos, videos, messages, etc and have the time to re-sort everything back into folders, then go for it.

  • Hi i have an iphone 4 that needs to be updated but my phone is using the cellular company simple mobile via gsm chip and my phone isnt jailbroken will this mess up my phone.

hi i have an iphone 4 that needs to be updated but my phone is using the cellular company simple mobile via gsm chip and my phone isnt jailbroken will this mess up my phone.

If your iPhone is truly unlocked - purchased as unlocked through Apple
or through wireless provider that sells unlocked iPhones or unlocked
by a wireless provider, then the update should not mess up your iPhone.
If your iPhone was jailbroken or hacked to change wireless providers,
then the update will relock it to the original wireless provider if you are lucky
or turn it into a useless brick if unlucky.
Back up first to protect against glitches or other problems.

  • I bricked my 3gs trying to update to iOS 6

I bricked my 3gs trying to update to iOS 6 I got an error message saying that it did not install correctly and now my computer does not recognize the phone and the phone only goes to the itunes usb screen. Any suggestions?

This is most often a severe hardware fault of the WiFi Chip. But steps to try are, Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if fixed. If not, Restore iPhone with iTunes on your computer. See if fixed. If not, and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution.

  • What happens during over-the-air update?

What processes occur during over-the-air update of an app?
This morning I checked for updates and there were 6 updates for apps on my phone. I selected one to install -- one that is listed as 0.3MB on the App Store. The new copy of the icon appeared, and the blue bar started moving. I presume that is the download to the iPhone taking place. Then is says "Installing..." I presume that is the actual installation of the updated app.
But... It seems to take a looong time to install. I could install Adobe Creative Suite on my MacBook Pro faster than this 0.3MB app is installing on my iPhone.
So what is it doing during all that time?

It appears apps don't actually update, it just downloads the new version and then installs it, part of that is removing the old version. However its getting annoying now because then I have a different version in itunes and on the phone so when I sync it wants to transfer the file to itunes, I end up with 2 versions of the same app in itunes then because it seems to not delete the old one.
