IPhone can't access internet via home Airport network

Hello,
a work colleague of mine has an iMac at home with a single Airport Express unit through which he plays music. He connects his iMac to the internet via an ethernet cable. He has just purchased an iPhone with an Orange contract. His son also has an iPhone through his employer.
Neither my colleague nor his son can access the internet with their iPhones via my colleague's home Airport network. Both iPhones recognise the Airport network, evidenced by the 'fan' icon that appears on their iPhones.
(Hope the above makes sense.)
I have emailed my colleague several 'help' articles, including those put out by Apple. My colleague has also communicated with someone from Apple (AppleCare I think?) but the problem persists.
Both iPhones apparently perform okay apart from this one irritating instance. Can anyone suggest what is wrong?
Many thanks,
Bob.

If it's an N Airport, I have heard that iPhones don't play well with N routers even if they are backward compatible with G.
Otherwise, they could try going into Settings/Wifi. See if the network shows up. Try clicking on it and see if it connects.
If that doesn't work click on the little arrow on the right side next to the network. This will reveal the network settings. Make sure that it's set on DHCP if that is how they acquire an IP address or static if that's what they use. If it's static, you'll have to put in the settings.

  • New Ipod Touch 5g can't access Internet in home network (using Linksys E4200 router). But, OK with other Wifi.

Just bought new Ipod Touch 5g. I found out it can't access Internet in home network. not really cannot access, but very slow to open any web page, App Store failed to access, etc. But, OK with other Wifi (office & starbucks). Others existing iOS devices (Iphone4 & Ipad2) have no problem like this. I'm using Linksys E4200 router at home. anyone has any idea why?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>GeneralReset>Reset Network Settings

  • I installed a new airport express and made it part of my existing home network...  now the PCs can't access internet through the airport extreme or the cisco access points

Everything works perfect with Macs, iPhone, iPads but I have 2 pcs that now can't access internet. The PCs connect to the airport and my other access points but no internet- The PCs sent an error of DNS

Yes, as we already said, it will do all of this if you have a good wireless signal reaching the bedroom.
Remember that an extender or repeater or whatever you want to call it can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.
The Ethernet signal that the Express delivers will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
If you have doubts, make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy.

  • Can't access internet via Airport even when I have full signal

    MacBook
When I turn Airport on I get full signal from my wireless connection but when I open Safari it says it cannot connect to the internet. I have had my MacBook since December '06 and it never gave me this problem before. Only in the last month is it giving me this problem. I am using the exact same wireless connection as before......i dunno whats going on. Please help.

I was just going to post this exact topic! My iBook connects to my home Airport Express flawlessly, and my iPhone can detect and connect to it, but then it doesn't display the WiFi logo (it still uses EDGE). Any help for the three of us?

  • Unable to access internet via my airport extreme base station

I have an AirPort Extreme Base Station which is hard wired to a Mac and which communicates wirelessly to a Mac in another room.  My internet access is via comcast.  Direct connection from this computer to my modem works fine, but not if I go through the AirPort.  The LED lights of the AirPort indicate normal network activity, (flashing/on/flashing).  I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything and rebooting the computer.  The system has been working normally through the AirPort until today.

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
(OPTIONAL) Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
(OPTIONAL) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
(OPTIONAL) After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
(OPTIONAL) Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Can't access Internet via Ethernet port of 'n' Express in 'Extend' mode

I just purchased the new Airport Express (AXp) n version for the purpose of extending my Airport Extreme (AXt) n version wireless network so that I can connect my old MacBook Pro (MBP) 17" core duo, running Mac OS X 10.5.2, to the AXp via an Ethernet cable when the MBP is stationary at my desk, in order to increase the maximum speed at which I am able to access the internet, from 54 Mbps for my MBP's internal wireless g card to 130 Mbps at which the AXp runs in the following configuration.
On the AXt, I set the wireless mode to create a wireless network, checked off the option to allow this network to be extended, set the radio mode to n (b/g compatible), set the channel to 11 (works best for our house), and set the wireless security to WPA/WPA2 Personal. On the AXp, I set the wireless mode to extend a wireless network, unchecked the option to allow wireless clients (I have also tried this option checked, as well), and set the wireless security to WPA/WPA2 Personal. Both Airport bases are running firmware version 7.3.1.
When I do this everything looks fine. My network preferences indicate that I have a valid IP address, and I am able to see and screen share with other computers on the local network; however, when I try to access the internet using Safari 3.1, I get a timeout error message indicating that the server I addressed is not responding. Then when I run the diagnostics from the network preferences, it indicates that my internet connection appears to be working correctly, and all the network status lights show green.
    Any ideas?

Thanks so much for all your replies. I will try to address all the points in this reply.
99, I think you are right, about Apple not supporting using the Ethernet WAN port as a LAN port when the AXp is in the "Extend" mode. However, I had read on the Apple website that it does support using the AXp WAN as a LAN in the WDS "Remote" mode, as you have verified with your older AXp, and which I had also verified with my new AXp. The only problem was, when using the AXp in the WDS "Remote" mode, the AXp ran ONLY at 54 Mbps, even when there were no additional wireless clients connected to it or to the AXt, which kind of defeated the purpose of using the AXp as an Ethernet bridge in the first place.
The only way I could get an AXp bridge to run at 130 Mbps was to use it in the "Extend" mode or the "Join" mode. In the "Join" mode, using the WAN as a LAN works fine when connecting to the Internet, but I am not able to see or screen share with any of the computers on my local network. In the "Extend" mode, I am able to see and screen share with all the computers on my local network, but I am not able to get to the Internet, even though the Network Diagnostic tool reports that my Internet connection "appears" to be working properly, and it gives me all green lights (and as near as I can tell with my limited knowledge of DNS, all that information appears correct, as well).
Bottom line, I don't think Apple has properly enabled the AXp's WAN as a LAN in the "Extend" mode, as they have in the "Join" mode and in the slower WDS "Remote" mode.

  • IPhone 5s can connect to wireless WIFI router but can not access internet.

iPhone 5s can connect to wireless WIFI router but can not access internet at work. The admin says the router lets my iPhone connect to LAN, but the iPhone does not have server IP to access the internet. I entered the server IP and port number in the HTTP PROXY fields but I still can not access the web. Any ideas?

You IT person should be able to sort this out.  But, they seems to be too busy or disinterested to do this.  Suggest you provide the it person with an iPhone to get interested.

The best you can do is to get access to the admin setup for networking on a pc?  The internet settings are all the same.  Only what names the manufactures change from OS to OS. Check and compare parameters.

  • Can,t access wifi via airport after left my mbp idle for just 1 minute

i can,t access wifi via airport after left my mbp idle for just 1 minute, i need to turn airport off & turn airport on if i left my mbp idle for just 1 minute or less...why this thing happen? anyone can help thanks in advance

Something that came to mind after rereading you post relates to the particulars of a "hard" reset on the Snow.
A “hard” reset removes current setting from the base station. You must then connect to the base station using the AirPort Admin Utility and upload AirPort 2.0 or later software to return the base station to its default settings. A base station in a hard reset is only accessible through the LAN port, not via wireless connections ... so attempting to access with the AAU, via a wireless client, will not work.

Just spoke with Cisco about the router.  They said the router is compatible with the E1500.  They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1).  They told me I would have to change it if that was the case.  How would I do that?

You can also check the following:
    * Your modem and/or router are both on and are not indicating errors. The problem may be with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Contact your ISP for more information.
    * If you are using a wireless connection, that you are using the correct access point.
    * Your Domain Name System (DNS) server translates web addresses (URLs) into IP addresses and is usually provided by your ISP. If the DNS server is overloaded, you may be unable to view some or all websites. For example, if http://74.125.53.99 or http://74.125.159.105 work but http://www.google.com doesn't, you may have a DNS problem. You can use an alternative service such as OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/) or Google Public DNS (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/).
    * Whether your Internet security software (including firewalls, antivirus programs, anti-spyware programs, and more) is blocking connections to the Internet. For instructions on how to configure some programs, see the Firewalls article (https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firewalls).

  • Internet Sharing:  Palm Device can't find Internet via USB to Imac G5

None of the internet-using applications on my Palm Tungsten E handheld can find the internet, via a USB connection from the Palm to my Imac G5 and its high speed internet connection.
I have 3rd party software (The Missing Sync 5 from Mark/Space) that is supposed to enable a USB-connected Palm device to share an OS X Mac's internet connection. But I'm not getting beyond the Mac and I think either something on the Imac or perhaps my Linksys router is blocking internet communication to and from the Palm device.
Despite turning off the Mac's firewall and enabling internet sharing in the OS X prefs panes, neither my Palm's web browser nor its mail program can get through to the internet and all I get are communications errors.
I would greatly appreciate suggestions as to what to try next as I have done just about everything I can think of to try to get this Palm to access the internet via the Mac
    IMAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   750 Mb RAM

Hello Adrian - thank you for your suggestions. The USB-connected PALM does NOT show up in The Imac's "Network Ports" - - and the only thing I could add, as a port, that was not already there, was something called "6 to 4" -whatever that is.
The Palm is supposed to be able to get its internet page requests out onto my router and DSL line via the Mac's ethernet port when: A) this Palm is connected to the Mac via USB and B) when the Internet sharing feature is enabled in a software app called - The Missing Sync, which it is, and when C) Internet Sharing is turned on in the Mac 'Sharing' pref. All these conditions are true, but sadly none of the internet apps on the Palm can find the internet .
I suspect a DNS issue - even though my router of course knows the DNS addresses of my ISP.
I should think that the PALM and the host Mac would have the same IP address - namely the one assigned via DHCP by my router when the Mac boots up.
    Very frustrating....
I know nothing about Palms but I'll give it a
    shot...
You say "Despite turning off the Mac's firewall and
enabling internet sharing in the OS X prefs panes",
are you seeing a USB option in the window? If so
    select it.
If not try going to System Preferences>Network>Show:
Network Port Configurations. (This with the Palm
    plugged in via USB).
Is it in that window? If it is tick it and go back to
internet sharing and select it in that window. (It
    should have now appeared).
If it's not in System Preferences>Network>Show:
Network Port Configurations; select 'New', and click
'Port'. Does it appear in the drop-down list there?
If it does, select it, name it and click OK. (Note:
USB isn't a 'normal' option here but maybe your
Missing Sync will have added it..?)
That will take you back to the main Network Port
Config window where you tick it if it isn't already.
Then go back to Sharing>Internet to see if is
available there. If is is, tick it.
If it isn't, don't know. Sorry.
    Have fun!
    Adrian
