IPhone checks mail randomly

Just over the past couple of months, about 1 out of 10 times after I unlock my 3G iPhone, it checks my email in the background without my entering the Mail application.
In Settings I have check mail set to manual in all occurrences. I have had an iPhone since Day 1 and have always had mail on manual check. This has not been a problem until recently.
The result is miserably slow performance while mail is checking in background.
For example, just now:
1. iPhone not in use all afternoon. I pick it up, press the round button, then unlock it.
2. Press Phone icon, find contact, touch phone number to initiate call
3. During call, I have to check my Calendar. I press round button, but it takes 10 second to bring me to Main Menu screen.
4. I press Calendar icon, and it takes 20 seconds to display my calendar
5. Just as my Calendar displays, iPhone "dings" with incoming email alert tone
6. I finish phone call. Open Mail application, and sure enough, I have new mail.
In this case and all others, I never touch the Mail icon and have all settings to check mail manually.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Is this a bug or a feature?

Almost.
The iPhone is designed in nature to be 'always on' i.e. connected to the internet and active all the time. This particular topic has been raised before and I recall had to be 'pruned' of some of the more vociferous comments.
It is as it is, and more sending of feedback is the best option as without such feedback in volume, Apple are not likely to view it as a significant requirement. I do not have knowledge of Apple's plans but given most people have data plans such that email volume is not a price sensitive issue, it will in my view, be way down the list on development priorities.

My folders that my message rules on iCloud divert emails to don't update when I open Mail on my iPad or iPhone. Only the inbox does. I have to click on each folder individually for it to update. A real pain as I have about 30 folders. Is there a way around this ? The folders update on my mac fine when i check mail without having to select each one of them. Can the iPad and iPhone do the same thing?

My Mac has 4 mail accounts coming into it, but you are correct, one of them is a POP account, (and unfortunately it is the main @ account, and is the one associated with my apple id, since we've had it for years).  I couldn't figure out how to replace this with the Imap version, short of deleting that account entirely.
Is this what I have to do?

What you've outlined in this part of the post is all that icloud stores for you outside of the backup. If you want to restore from the icloud backup you will then have for all practical purposes a carbon restoration back to your device if you restore from the icloud backup.

Syncing your device with itunes will then enable you to remove whatever photos you wish to remove from your device deleting them with the computer and not the iphone.

  • Iphone 5s mails not updated since monday. Checks and then says updated Monday. All settings checked and deleted and reinstated account....no change

My iPhone 5s mail has not updated since Monday; I can see mails on iMac.  Checks for mail but nothing new appears.    I have checked all settings and deleted and reinstated mail box but no luck. Can anyone help please.

If the mail provider is a pop mail account, that could be why, because the iMac may have downloaded them already.
If you go to mail > preferences > accounts, it'll tell you there if it is pop or imap.

    Update to above question:
    Hello All,
To anyone with the same problem described above, on THEIR iPad (if it is running iOS 7.0.2):
Go to Settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars; DELETE your *******@btinternet.com e-mail account, that you originally set up either using 'Other', or the 'BT' option which I am sure was in the list previous to the iOS 7 update.
Then ADD a NEW account choosing YAHOO from the list of options. DO NOT USE 'OTHER'.
Enter the correct details just as you (almost certainly) had already done in your previous attempts using 'other'.
When you see the 'verifying......' and 'the blue ticks' you should be able to exit settings and open your mail app and then receive all your 'old' e-mails again, AND be able to SEND as well.
All my 'old' e-mails, were NOT found in the 'old e-mail' folder though. THEY are still in my inbox.
So this fix worked for me.
After I deleted my account from 'OTHER' and put it in Yahoo, I like other people also ended up with more folders.
I hope this works for you on YOUR Apple devices.
    Bob

  • Checking POP email on iphone disables mail account on my MacPro?

    Hello
Just set up new 3G iphone and have set it up to receive and send email from two accounts, I believe both are POP (one of which is a .ca.rr Road Runner account; other hosted on Bluhost). The iPhone is receiving and sending email from these accounts just fine. However, if I recently accessed mail on my Iphone, and I happen to be at my MacPro computer and my Mail application is open at the same time, and I go to check mail on the MacPro.... exclamation points will appear next to my Road Runner account (as if it cannot connect to that account/been disconnected to it). I either need to (A) wait a few minutes from after my phone has accessed the account, or (B) I need to shut my phone off for the exclamation points to go away and I can check mail again on the Mac. My other email account (the Bluhost one) seems unaffected and never loses connection.
Generally, if I am at my Macpro, I do not need to be checking email on my iphone, but I don't want to have to shut my phone off when I am using my Macpro at home. In summary, checking email on my iphone is temporarily disconnecting my ability to check the same email account from my Macpro.
This seems to happen whether my iPhone is connected to the 3G network or connected to my home Wifi. My MacPro is wired, running off an ethernet connection. I use an Airport Station to send out the WiFi signal.
Anyone experience similar or have suggestions?
If I need to provide more info, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance!

    You're welcome.
What I like about POP though is how it downloads an independent copy to my computer INBOX. From what I understand, IMAP keeps the copy on the server. Yes, I could create a folder in my Mail app on my computer, and drag the email to that folder, thereby saving a copy on my hard drive. But sometimes I just want to leave mails in my INBOX without having to organize.
Messages do remain on the server with an IMAP account but with the Mail.app on your Mac, there is an option to keep copies of messages for offline viewing with an IMAP account for viewing messages in server stored mailboxes when you don't have internet access with the following options - all messages and their attachments, all messages but omit attachments, only messages that have been read. Not usually required with a desktop, but a good feature to have with a laptop when traveling from location to location during periods of time without internet access.
As far as configuration, I am also using AT&T SMTP for outgoing mail on the iphone. Without the AT&T SMTP, I couldn't send mail on the 3G network trying to use the RR servers. This also works when I hook into the WiFi.
Does this work when connected to any wi-fi network regardless the internet service provider being used for internet access with various wi-fi networks that you access? If so, this is good, but not a concern with an authenticated SMTP server.
One thing that remains a bit confusing is, on my iPhone, when I send a mail to the TRASH. If I go to the Trash to read the email, I can see the subject line, but the body reads "This message has no content" -- not for all trashed messages, but most, which makes it even more confusing why some are like that and others are not.
Not sure about this one, but I don't believe this has anything to do with messages not being removed from the server when downloaded by a POP account.

  • Iphone/continues to check mail until battery is dead

I have 2 email accounts set up on my iphone. Up until a week ago I could send & get mail. Now,I go to check mail and is says "connecting" & "getting mail" - nothing comes in (although I have gotten mail in these accounts on my computer.) It continues checking all day and will not stop and runs the battery down - I can see this in my USEAGE, all the hours it is racking up. I went in and shut these 2 accounts to "OFF" Now when I go in and turn them to "ON" these 2 accounts do not show up at all on MAIL (just Messenger, Google, etc.) Nothing under "Other."
    Any ideas?

I have had the same problem - especially when out and about with 3G on. Turning the phone off and then on again [press and hold the power button] does work every time but it is a bit of a pain.
The other way is to press and hold the home button which will kill the last app [email] running or the one you are in. I've found that maneuver stops the program from continuing to check for mail and running down the battery. It is less effective at getting mail to connect properly again.
I have not found it necessary to delete and add accounts and so forth.

  • Iphone automatically checks mail even though it's set to "manual" check

In settings > mail, Auto-check is set to manual, but my phone still vibrates and beeps periodically -- even when it has been asleep and I'm not touching -- announcing that new mail has arrived.
I'm using it to check a yahoo and a gmail account. Why is it still checking mail automatically?

Actually I just figured this out myself. You can turn it off by going to
    Settings > Mail
and then clicking on your yahoo account. At the very top of the screen for your yahoo account settings, there's a button that says "Account ON or OFF"
Switching it to OFF means it won't show up at all in your mail program but it also won't push. Switching it back on makes it show up immediately in your mail program again.

  • IPhone 4 mail App not working properly

My IPhone 4 mail app just continues to spin and check email without getting email or sending.
Had the same problem in October after iOS 6 update took in phone and got a new one under 1 yr warranty.( apple and Verizon techs could not figure)
Again the problem is back.  The spiny thing just continues to spin and no email update.
If I reboot the phone the email is pulled down but stops again.
    iPhone : 4
    iOS : 6.01
    Carrier : Verizon wireless
Can not find anything on apple support or anywhere on google
I installed gmail app and all email pulls down perfectly but can not get me AOL email setup
So I know the network is working
Anyone know about this email App problem?
    Thx
    Bahram

I'm getting this too. It's very slow and apparently thinks "Call Sue Newport" sounds like "Call Halfords" or "Call Halyards" and, most surprisingly "Call First Great Western".
I was wearing my Jawbone Bluetooth headset so it's nothing to do with background noise.
I tried the new "What time is it?" command which works but takes about 10-15 seconds to activate.

  • New iPhone 5c Mail won't push

I activated my new iPhone (Verizon 5c, 16 gig) on March 7th and updated to 7.1 a day later. It replaced an iPhone 4 running iOS 6. I had the phone all set up with programs and wireless connectivity prior to activating it. All of my emails and contacts were on the phone and they worked exactly as they had on my old phone using iOS 6, via my wireless modem.
However, either after the activation, or the update to 7.1 a day or two later (I don’t know which), my two personal email accounts connected to my two web sites stopped working as they had before.
My Yahoo and iCloud accounts did not change. They work fine.
There are two problems. First of all, I do not have the choice of setting my email to Push. The accounts can only be set to Fetch. I have contacted my provider, and they have assured me that there is no reason for that to happen. They have made no changes, and my iPhone emails almost always arrived on my old phone before they arrived on my computer. They were definitely being pushed, and I am also certain that they were being pushed before the phone was activated, because again, I almost always heard the new iPhone beep first.
To clarify, I do not have the choice to select "Push" when I go to the Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Fetch New Data. I do have that choice with my Yahoo iCloud accounts.
The second problem is almost stranger. The emails ONLY show up after I open and look specifically at those accounts, and they show up as already read (no little blue dots next to them).  So I don’t know that I haven’t read them. They still show up as unread on my computer. Also, even though they are not read, they also do not show up in the unread number account. (I sent numerous test emails as I fiddled with settings and this happens every time.)
And though the Notification Center is are set identically for all four email accounts, only the Yahoo and iCloud accounts provide notification. The two problem accounts do not notify me when new emails were received, even after the 15 minutes Fetch time has elapsed, and they still don’t show up in my email list until after I open that account and wait for the new emails to start showing up. They are never there before I open the account.
So, I can’t set the accounts to Push, I’m not notified when they arrive, and they show up as already read. (And by the way, those same emails still show as unread several hours later on the laptop because they have never been opened on either device.)
I know for sure that I had Push notification before, because it irritated me that the phone always seemed to get the message before the computer, and in my business every second counts (and I can respond faster on my laptop).
Note that when I am home, I have cell phone service due to my location. But I do have wireless connectivity for emails and internet. So it is not a phone carrier problem. I still have the same problem when I am away from home and on the Verizon network. The emails still don’t show up as they should.
If this can’t be fixed, I can get my old iPhone up and running again, except it has iOS7 on it now (a friend bought it, but will give it back if necessary). Is it possible to reinstall iOS6 on the old iPhone 4? I have to be able to get my emails faster.

    Update
I was wrong about the notification. Going to POP made the emails that arrive show up as unread, but it still doesn't notify when the emails are fetched.
So fetch is set up for 15 minutes (I need it to be faster) and when it does fetch (and I'm not sure that it does) it doesn't notify me. Only when I open up mail do I get the notification sound telling me that there are new emails.
When I'm traveling, I need the phone to check mail for me. And I need it to tell me that it has new mail. Why is this so hard?

  • How to delete the Previous Recipients list in iPhone 3G Mail

I would like to delete the list of previous recipients in my iPhone 3G Mail so that when I search it only shows addresses in my Contacts, not every single random address I may have used.
I know how to do this in Mail on my desktop, and I tried the option of replacing the Mail info on the iPhone with the info from the desktop, but it didn't work.
Anyone knows how to do this?

    sanjinzvonic,
In my expeirence, the only way to do this is to restore your iPhone, setting it up as a new phone. You can try resetting all settings prior to this to see if that does it as well.
To reset all settings, navigate to Settings > General > Reset.

  • In my 16 gb iPhone 5, Mail has used up 5,6 gbs of memory.  Trash is empty and there are a few mails in my accounts with no attachments.  What's wrong?

In my 16 gb iPhone 5, Mail has used up 5,6 gbs of memory (and is increasing).  Trash is empty and there are a few mails in my accounts with no attachments.  What's wrong?

These are Apple's tips on this:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Must check mail manually on 3G phone - doesn't come through automatically

I only receive e-mails if I touch the mail icon and the iPhone checks for mail. No alerts come through on its own, as it did on my original iPhone.
    Any suggestions?

    Again, thanks for the replies.
What's strange is that I 'handed down' my original iPhone to my son, and I had installed 2.0 on that phone - which obviously has the same settings options (his is set on manual) - and he still gets e-mails immediately. I think I'm missing something.
Also - is MobileMe the only solution? In order to have near immediate e-mails you must pay for that service?
Thanks for the help. I guess I knew less about the upgrade than I thought.
