IPhone chrome bezel emitting 1v AC when charging.

I had this with my iPhone 3G too, and I've noticed it with almost all iPhone's I've encountered I think. I usually sit at my desk with my iPhone charging near me, and my arm bumps it lightly. I always got little shock like things, so I tested by lightly brushing my lip against the chrome, it hurts! I pulled out my multimeter just now, touched the bezel while charging with one prong, and touched ground with the other, and got around 1v AC. This doesn't always happen, and it doesn't seem to be happening with my desktop, only my laptop, and with the genuine apple wall charger. Also, sometimes it's as little as 0.1v AC.
Really, what's up with this? I really hate getting pricked on the arm with the little bit of charge.

I'm by no means an expert on this, but it was the same feeling I got when I ran a computer ungrounded (by accident, I have since rewired the plug). A light touch would hurt, but a hand on it wouldn't. I also just tested it with a current detector (it goes off when it's around something ungrounded) and it went off when it was plugged into the wall charger. This does make sense, seeing as there's no ground prong, but if it's needed, it should be there, and apparently it is, because when I plug into my desktop, nothing. I'm assuming it uses the bezel as a ground when it's charging, and if there's no ground to go to outside of the phone, it just stays there. I urge you all to try this! As crazy as it sounds, touch your tongue to the bezel as it's charging from the wall charger, and you'll feel it a bit.
I do think it's normal behavior, as it makes sense, if there's no ground, it just stays in the phone. But if there's enough to feel, there's enough to get rid of, there should be a ground prong on the charger!

  • IPhone gives me an electric shock when charging

    Hey All,
Maybe someone can help me with this. Just recently I noticed my iPhone shocks my ear if I use it while its charging. I think it's been happening for a while but I assumed my ear was catching on the screen guard. However last night I got a really big zap that stung pretty bad so I knew it was iPhone. I think something happens because my usb wall charge adapter no longer works and the mic in my headset died all at the same time that I started noticing the pain in my ear when I use it. I don't use the phone while charging any more but what should I do? My phone is integrated heavily into my business so I can't go a day without having it. Anyone know if something I could do so I'm not without the phone and its not shocking me anymore.
Seems like always my luck with my apple gear. Last time my powerbook wall charger shocked me and caught on fire.
    Thanks,
    Pete

There may be a short in the wall adapter. If it does not have a green dot on the bottom you have one that was recalled for a similar problem. If you reverse the plug in the wall you won't get the shock. but you should really replace the adapter.
It's also possible that your outlet is miswired. You should have an electrician check it. or get an outlet polarity tester at Radio Shack.

  • IPhone 4 reaches over 120 degrees when charging

My iPhone 4 will not charge on it's own charger or plugged into my laptop, but when on my iPad charger it gets too hot to touch.  The phone also will not charge when powered off.  Battery life is also abnormally short  (less than 4 hours in standby) and will never fully charge when using iPad dock.  The phone is just over 2 years old and it's first time happening.

The entire iPhone has a 1 year warranty.  Whether it's worth it or not is completely up to you.  If it were me, I'd swap the battery, sell it and buy something that Apple will likely announce on Sep 10th.

  • IPhone not turning on or dying when charged

I just got my phone in February. My phone turned off last night even if the battery level was on the middle. I tried to turn it on this morning and I needed to plug the charger in just for it to turn back on ~ Come to find out it wasn't even dead. It happen again ealier today. I wasn't able to turn it on until I plugged it in. After a while I tried to turn it on again, but it didn't want to. UNTIL I pulled the plug out and put it back in again.
I never been so careful with my phone. Its been dropped once or twice with a case on and it was never too extreme. PLUS its been a long time since that happen.
    Whats going on???

Have you done a reset or restore to see if this corrects the problem? If you have and the problem is still occurring, you'll need to pay a visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. To make an appointment - http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • Remove iPhone from case when charging?

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I would rather post a dumb question than really mess up. Once I read somewhere to take my iPod out of its case when I charge it, I guess it keeps it from getting too hot or something. My question is, should I take the iPhone out of its case (Marware leather flip vue) when I charge it, either at home or in the car?
    Many thanks in advance.

The iPhone does not get particularly warm when charging, so it shouldn't normally be necessary to remove it from the case. If you're in an already-warm environment (e.g. a hot car) it's probably not a bad idea, though. High heat is bad for fully-charged batteries.
    Hope this helps...

  • IPhone 5s top glass not flush with chrome bezel?

So I was recently rubbing my iphone screen clean with a microfiber cloth when I noticed there was some white dust / lint on the top of the screen where the glass meets the bezel that simply won't rub off. Upon closer inspection the "white lint" I'm seeing is not lint / dust at all, it is the edge of the glass part being raised above the chrome bezel, and instead of being black or transparent it is white. When I look at the top part edge on (like looking down directly at the lock button) it appears that the front part of the screen is raised up ever so slightly. If I apply pressure on this raised part it goes down like it should and is 100% flush like in the product images on the official apple iphone site, but as soon as I release it comes back up again. It's a really minor cosmetic issue right now, but I'm concerned about down the line, like a thread getting snagged in the tiny elevated part and pulling the screen to be more separated. Or maybe over time the separation will increase on its own?
Other than that (and my loose rattling lock button, which I've learned to live with since all the ones on display at my local apple store also have rattling lock buttons) the phone is flawless. Would apple be able to re-seat the screen to fix this issue? Or if I showed them this would they just want to offer a replacement? I am definitely not pleased with this very minor defect, but not sure what to do. The fact that the screen is raised doesn't bother me, it's that it looks like white dust / lint because is stuck in there where it is raised that bothers me.
    Thanks for your replies

I went in, genius noted that the display glass was separating, and replaced it on the spot. Support like this is why I keep buying apple products. Thank you apple!

When I go to plug in my iPhone 5 to my PC it will charge my phone but it doesn't show up that it's connected to my computer or in iTunes. I have tried just about everything that I can find in the support discussions but nothing has worked. Any other suggestions?

If you have carefully follow ALL of the steps in that article, you are using a USB port directly on your computer and not a USB hub (don't use a front port on a tower or desktop either, as they are an internal hub) and you installed iTunes correctly using an Administrator ID and you have tried disabling your antivirus and firewall then there is no hope of it ever working. Look at the tip again, and go through it carefully, not skipping any steps.
Note, BTW, that an iPhone will not show up on a computer, only in iTunes. If there are photos in the Camera Roll then it will appear in Windows as a digital camera only.

  • My iPhone 5s with iOS 7.1 become very hot when charged almost reach 100% and will shut down itself.

My iPhone 5s with iOS 7.1 become very hot when charged almost reach 100 % and will shut down itself. Then I need to off the power and let it cool down first before I can on the phone back. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

    Hi Limfromsi,
It is normal to an extent for the iPhone to get warm during charging. If your iPhone is currently in a case, you may want to try charging it without one and see if the issue occurs, as the design of the iPhone uses the exterior of the device as a cooling surface. For more information about iPhones and temperature, you may find the following article helpful:

If you continue to have issues with your iPhone in the default config (no case, using the included original cable and power adapter), you may want to have your phone evaluated for service. The following page may be of use:

    Howdy AndieKanaras,
It sounds like your iPhone is being recognized everywhere but in iTunes. I would use the troubleshooting for that issue in the following article, named:

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Why does iPhone beep when charging

My iPhone continues to beep when charging....can anyone tell me how to stop the beeping

When you say "beep" you mean the sound it makes right after you plug it in? If so, you might have a faulty cable or USB port, so your iPhone will beep everytime it gets disconnected and reconnected to the computer. If it's not that, try to describe the sound. Is it similar to what other sounds on iPhone system?
