Iphone contact backups

After backing up and then updating (iOS 4 to 5) my wife's iPhone in iTunes on her PC (Vista), only about half of her contacts appeared on the phone. Unfortunately, after realizing half the contacts were missing, I synced her iPhone again. Well, this simply saved the contacts that remained on her iPhone. Then I thought I could restore the earlier backup file (from the first time I had synced and upgraded that evening). Well, when I looked for the backup file on the Device menu (Preferences), only the most recent one showed up. The earlier backup file was missing. I did look on her hard drive (Drive C...Mobile files...) and only saw a bunch of files all dated around the same time as the most recent backup. The files from earlier that evening were not there.
She does not have any other backup of her contacts. Is there anything else that we can try to recover the missing contacts?
Help, please.
Thanks.

Sorry I posted terrible info here but luckily if done like I said it shouldn't harm it. This is the correct way to put iPhone into recovery mode and ATTENTION IF YOUR READING ABOUT RECOVERY MODE! :
1. You will need your computer on and ready.
2. Turn your iPhone off like you normally would
3. Next hold down the home button while you connect iPhone to the computer but do not let go!
4. When the itunes and USB symbol appears (like the one on screen when the iPhone is new) you can let go.
5. A message appears on the computer on iTunes (if it doesn't launch launch it now) about recovery mode and if it asks choose restore or if it doesn't click restore yourself in the summary tab.
Hopefully this will be more successful than before but if is totally screwed iTunes wise then turn the iPhone off by holding the sleep button down and then turning back on as usual but if for some reason this doesn't work reset it by holding the sleep and home buttons down until the apple appears.
If you can use Mobile Me it could be a very good short or long term solution seeing as it's free for two months which would be enough for it to sync all your unsynced contacts and if you like it it's only £60 a year but this is no substitute for iTunes and regular backups as you have found out; although I'm still surprised it happened.
Sorry once again about the bad info in my last post, Rich

  • Which itunes folder do I copy for iphone contact backup?

I lost all of my iphone 4 contacts last week when the message app malfunctioned and then the contacts disappeared.  This seems to be happening to many others also.  My iphone 4 was backed up in itunes on my PC running windows xp.  However, when I upgraded the itunes to 11.1.3, my PC now runs at 100% CPU usage when I'm in itunes with my iphone connected to PC (does not happen with any other application I run on the PC).  So, I wasn't able to restore the iphone backup from my PC to get the contact info.  I went into the Apple store and purchased a new iphone.  I discussed the problem with Apple and scheduled an appointment at the genius  bar.  The Apple sales person told me to copy my itunes folder (which has the iphone 4 backup) on to an external drive and bring the drive, along with my Macbook Pro (extra computer at home) into the store and they would try to restore my contacts on my new iphone.  When I do a search on my PC for the itunes folder, a few itune folders appear and I'm not sure which one I should copy. I'd appreciate any information you can provide - I'm very desperate to try to get all my contact information restored on the new iphone.

The iPhone is not intended to be sole storage of contacts.
There is no one specific folder that can be used to recovery anything from an iOS backup.
The backup has one purpose, to restore an iOS device.  Restores are ALL or nothing.
The iTunes folder does not contain the backup.  Not sure why anyone would tell you such a silly thing.
Where are iTunes backups stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data is stored depends on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press Return.

  • IPhone contacts backup

    Hi
Just got a 3GS - Ive noticed when I right click the iphone device in itunes that it says "back up iphone". Which I have done. What exactly does this back up and where is it stored? (Is it easy to to a restore with this backup?)
Within the iphone menu (through itunes) there is a section in the Info tab which relates to contacts where it says "Sync Contacts with...".
I have left this unticked. Do I need to have this box checked to back up my contacts? Im a little scared to do it in case it syncs my contacts on the phone with whats on the computer - which is nothing, and wipes all contact data on my phone. (Kind of like what happens when you sync an ipod with a computer that has a blank library.)
    Advice please?
Ps - Are any of the contacts stored on the sim with the iphone? What data is actually stored on the sim?

This article explains what is stored in the iphone backups and where the backup is located on your computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
The iphone is NOT a backup device and your contacts should be stored on your computer and your computer data SHOULD be backed up.
To merge the contacts on your phone with a supported application on your computer(Outlook, Address Book/Outlook Express), do the following:
Make sure that auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected is disabled under preferences in itunes.
Place at least one contact in whatever supported application you use on your computer, it can be fake, it doesn't matter.
Connect your phone with itunes running, DO NOT SYNC!
Right click the phone in the device pane & select reset warnings, this should generate a merge prompt when you sync.
Under the contacts tap in itunes, select the application you want to sync your contacts with and select all.
When you now sync, you should receive a pop up regarding your contacts, asking to merge or replace. Select merge and your phone's contacts will populate the supported application on your computer.
The iphone does not support storing contacts on the sim card.

  • HT204150 I dropped my iphone 4 in water and am using an older iPhone as backup.  When I restored my contacts/calendar, etc. Only the calendar updated correctly.  No notes transferred over and my contacts are from a year ago.  How do I get my more recent c

I dropped my iPhone 4 in water and cannot get it to dry out enough to turn back on.  I may have fried the battery.  I am using an old iPhone 3 temporarily but cannot get all of my current info to sync.  My calendar is up to date but none of my notes have transferred over and the contact list is from when I originally used the iPhone 3 last year.  How do I get my iPhone 4 info synced onto the iPhone 3?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't restore an iPhone 3G from an iPhone 4 backup. Until you get a replacement you can access your iCloud data at iCloud.com on a computer.

  • Iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst file names and backups. Iphone4 connects to car though and other phones connect properly.

iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst files, names and backups, on my ms XP 2003 laptop. I substituted a much smaller new Personal Folder -Contacts File, with a smaller list of phone numbers (4 only as a test) which successfully synced to the iPhone 4. The iPhone connects to the Skoda Octavia HandsFreeSystem OK (Bluetooth works fine), but now iPhone wont load the new Contacts as it did originally. However a family Nokia (never messed with) can connect properly. So must be the iPhone or more likely an Outlook.pst \ Contacts problem. Ideas?

After fiddling a little more, the following fixed my corrupted outlook.pst file:
    1) I made a backup
    2) In outlook under file, I exported the calendar to excel
    3) In outlook under file, I imported the calendar back to outlook
    And voila, it worked.

  • My iPhone contacts disappeared. Is it possible to make backup?

Today I cannot acces to the setiings in my iphone, so i switched it off and when i switched on, all my iphone contacts were gone. Is it possible to make some backup of the contacts?
Thank you in advance for your help

Thsi seems to be happening a lot. Mine just disappeared out of no where last night. I wasn't on the phone or anything. My sister texted me and I picked up my phone to see who it was and it just showed her number. I checked my contacts turned the phone off and back on and my contacts still weren't back.
Anyone get an answer from APPLE on this issue. I have never had problems with my Iphones before but have had many problems with the 4s from the battery running down now to this. I refused to upgrade when my 4s is just a little over a year old.

  • How do you backup IPhone contact list to Computer (XP) PC Computer?

How do you backup IPhone Contact List to PC Computer(XP) ?

The easiest way that I have found is to open Outlook, go back to Itunes & select your phone.
Choose the 'Info' tab at the top of the screen & tick the box marked 'Sync contacts with' & choose Outlook from the drop down box.
    Image attached may explain better.

  • HT201269 i want to transfer itune contacts backup for iphone 4 to new iphone

i want to transfer itune contacts backup for iphone 4 to new iphone

You can follow the instructions in the page you linked from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109 to transfer everything from your old phone to your new one. If you only want to transfer contacts and you still have your old phone (or if the contacts are already on your computer) you could sync the contacts as described in: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12317
Also, if you still have the old phone you could sync them via iCloud without using a computer: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • IPhone contacts auto-backup

I had a iPhone original, which unfortunately got dropped in a Pint and died (**** non-removable batteries).
When I synchronized my phone with iTunes I always thought that it backed up my contacts into Address Book. Unfortunately it hasn't done this and I need to somehow get my contacts list back.
Researching into this problem i managed to find the iPhone backup file iTunes creates. Is there anyway to extract the names numbers from this file (I think its a SQLite file), or copy the contacts to a Nano 4th Gen.
    Thanks.

When syncing if you have selected contact information to be synced with the Address Book on your Mac under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences, this is a bidirectional or true sync process with the Address Book, or should be, not a backup process. Contact information on your iPhone is included with your iPhone's backup, which is created and maintained by iTunes as the very first step during the sync process.
Try MobileSync Browser. If you purchase the plus version, it should provide for exporting contact info from your iPhone's backup and if so, I don't know what format the the contact info is exported as.

  • Backup iPhone contacts

Does anyone know how to backup iPhone contacts into address book on macbook?
    Thanks guys...

Your iphone should sync to address book and ical. The settings are in itunes, with your iphone connected.
Maybe you should review the users guide:

  • HT1386 Why doesn't my iphone show up when I plug it into my computer? I do not have a listing for "devices" and thus cannot backup my iphone contacts etc.

I am trying to backup my iphone contacts through itunes... Oddly, my iphone 4 is not visible under 'Devices' when I plug it into the USB port on the computer. It doesn't seem that I will be able to connect to or access or change anything unless my phone shows up as a Device in Itunes on the left side. Suggestions? I have tried two different ports and neither permits my iphone to show up as a device in itunes.
    Appreciatively,
    Donna

I will go back to step one on your support link that suggests checking the USB cord. or connectors I use it to charge the phone all the time but the phone does not register as a device in my computer either. I tried all four ports. Thanks. You have me off on a new path... hopefully to find a solution.

Try using one ot the several WiFi transfer apps in the App Store. I do that all the time, back/forth between iPhone and iPad Mini. Works with videos, too.
