IPhone Contact Pictures Fully Explained

Hello Guys,
Just wanted to explain fully how the iPhone contact pictures work and why some are large and some are small etc.
In the very beginning if you added a picture to a contact on the IPHONE when you made a call it would show up as a LARGE image. If you added the picture via the Mac contacts app, when you called it would be a small image in the top right corner.
Then what happened if you added a HD/large in data size image to a contact in the mac app, it would show in your iPhone (during a call) as a large image. This was because there was enough picture data to show the larger size.
Now we come to Yosemite and iOS8........
In iOS8 if you now view a contact on the iPhone and actually finger tap the contact picture it actually opens up the full image in the screen. This didn't happen before.
Before if you tapped the picture nothing would happen.......now you can view the image and save it to the camera roll if you wish........
Now.....in Yosemite if you add a picture on the Mac this is where is gets interesting....... It doesn't matter on the actually data size of the image. It could be 40kb or 4mb. What makes the difference between large and small when calling is the HEIGHT of the image.
If you resize ANY image to 960px, when calling it will show the image as blurry LARGE!!
If you make the image 959px or less in height it will show the image as small top right.
So you have have a 5mb image thats 959px high and it will show as a small image when calling.......
I hope that clears everything up for you guys!

ckent007,
What version of the iPhone software are you using?
Are you saving the contact pictures (by tapping done in the edit contact screen) before you go to the home screen and use another application?
Hope this helps,
Jennifer B.

  • Syncing iPhone contact pictures properly

This might seem like a trivial problem but its really bugging me!
I have an iPhone 5 capable of taking great photos with it's 8 megapixel camera and they look amazing on the 326ppi 4 inch screen. When I assign these photos to a contact they look good, fill the whole screen high res.... All is good and I'm happy!
The problem is that when I sync them with my Mac it 'kindly' resizes them to low res and crops them to fit a square box and then do not fit the screen on my iPhone often cropping the top of peoples heads off!
I've wiped all contacts off adress book on Mac and synced, then re saved all the pictures on the iPhone and synced again thinking this would force address book to save the high res files - it didn't work! Next time I synced it saved the square low res versions!
It's really bugging me and any help to sort this would be great...

The pic display with incoming calls is determined by the source of the pic in the contact entry. If the pic was assigned on the iPhone (either from the photo library or the camera roll), it shows full screen. If the pic is synced from an external address book, the pic shows as a thumbnail at the top.
It sounds like you assigned pics on the iPhone at some point, do not have pics in your Address Book, but do have pics in Google Contacts. Thus, when you sync from Google Contacts, it's an externally-assigned pic and shows as a thumbnail, but when you turn that off there's no pic assigned externally, so it defaults back to the pic assigned on the iPhone.
But, I've never tried to sync with Google Contacts, so the above is a guess.
Perhaps you can clarify where you have contact pics stored (Google, Address Book, or assigned on the iPhone).

  • IPhone Contact Pictures

Can we end this controversy once and for all.  In general if I use an application on the computer it does indeed make the contact image ring as a thumbnail.  If I set it within the iOS e contact image is full screen when someone calls.  But I am currently running into a situation where I keep setting it within the iMail application on my computer and it still shows up Fullscreen.   Is there any mention of the from apple officially? I feel like they should comment on it instead of all e speculation.  Thanks all

you can also take a picture of someone with your iphone. Then go to the picture in the picture roll, click on the icon at the bottom left of the screen that looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. This will give you the option to use it as wall paper, email photo, or assign to a contact. Select assign to contact. You can then select which contact you want to use this photo for. Hope this helps.

  • I am in Brasil, here they have a different carrier. When i go back to the US is there a way I can save everything from my Iphone (contacts, pictures, videos, etc) and transfer them to a US carrier?

I am currently living in brasil at the moment, and I plan to go back to the US soon.
I would have to change carriers in this case. I am afraid I will lose every contact here and all the pictures I have taken on my Iphone.
Is there a way I can do this via transferring to a US carrier without losing all my data?

Data on the phone has absolutely nothing to do with what carrier you are using. No data is stored on the SIM at all. If you have a (legitimately) unlocked phone, all you should have to do is put your new SIM in the phone and carry on.

  • Contact Picture sync behavior

Problem: I add a new contact picture on the iPhone, later sync: the pic loses its resolution and becomes a low-res 'Address Book' picture that appears in the top-right corner when someone calls.
I know the topic of contact pic has been hashed out lots already, but I haven't found this answer yet. How do I get my iPhone contact pictures to stay on my iPhone contacts in full resolution after syncing to MacBook Address Book?
What happens: take a new picture with the iPhone by going to the contact / Edit / add photo / Take Photo, or add a picture by going to the contact / Edit / add photo / Choose Existing Photo -- the contact picture will be a full-screen full-res contact photo; the person will call and their picture will be the full background on the phone call display. Then I sync a couple times with my MacBook with 'Sync Address Book contacts' checked: the full-res photo will be lost, replaced by a low-res version that only appears in the top-right when the person calls.
It's like the first sync Address Book receives the photo from the iPhone, the 2nd sync the iPhoto replaces the high-res photo with the low-res one that Address Book is using. When it happens with a new photo it appears there is no way to recover the higher-res photo (very sad sometimes). It doesn't happen 100% of the time - perhaps there's a variable I'm not seeing.
Others have said that you only get the low-res, top-right picture if you assign the photo to the contact in Address Book on the computer, but I'm also getting it when I simply sync to the computer. I've never added contact pictures using Address Book.
My wish: Address Book would accept the higher-res version photo. Fallback wish: Address Book uses a low-res version, iPhone keeps it's higher-res version. At the very least, let me choose which device takes precedent in sync!
Is there a workaround? A way to recover the higher-res version? A way to make the higher-res picture stick? Mostly I want to know: is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks for any info in advance.

It seems that with each upgrade the feature that allow you to assign a photo to a contact keeps changing the way it works. When I select a photo and used the cropping tools, the results are not even close to what you selected on screen with the crop and zoom functions.
How do we get this bug fixed!
    Thanks!

  • HT1386 I have an older iPhone (3gs) and need to upgrade to a newer phone (4S).  I need to get my NOTES, CALENDAR, CONTACTS, PICTURES, etc backed up on iTunes so I can get that data loaded onto the new phone.  But not sure how to do that.

I'm assuming it's trying to tell me I have an older iTunes Library, but don't know that.  Geez, maybe people over 60 shouldn't have iPhones, iTunes just bafles me.

My computer crashed and I have to get my data from my old drive to another computer, to ensure I get all my data what do I need to get.  I have and ipad and an iphone.  I need to get apps, contacts, pictures, etc.  Is there a way to do this? It was a vista pc and the new is win 7. I can grab the backup files, and music, but what about my apps? I do not want to sync on the new pc since the apps aren't there.  Were are the app files located in itunes? Can I just copy them to the new computer?

You can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Your old ID connects to an icloud account containing all your data (email, contacts, etc.)  If you then use a different ID, you will connect to a different account, which results in losing all your "apple" data, like emails, contacts, calendars, etc.
However, Apple IDs are also used to connect to an itunes store account, with is different.  You can keep using the old itunes store ID to keep all your purchases (but if you change to a different ID, you will lose all purchased items) and use the new ID for icloud (but losing emails, contacts, etc. from the old account).

  • I erased everything on my iphone and lost all my contacts pictures and everything how do i get all that back from my itunes account??

I erased everything on my iphone and lost all my contacts pictures and everything else how do i get the contacts and pictures back from my itunes account?? ive tried restore its like it gave me a whole new iphone thing.

If you plug in the iPhone to your computer, any contacts ect that you synced with your computer with sync back with the iPhone when it is selected in the iTunes menu under info. Anything that was added without syncing was lost, I'm sorry. A good future solution is to get iOS 5 when it comes out this fall, so you don't need to manually sync contacts, its automatic!

    - You do have iTunes version 11 on the computer, right. Saying the latest is not sufficient.
    - Have you tried everthing here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - You should
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Your library/media will not be affected.
    - Does the iPod charge?

  • I have an iPhone 4s iOs 5.1.1, I want to update it to iOs 7, if I've backed up to iCloud will my contacts, pictures and text messages be saved and able to be restored if lost?

I have an iPhone 4s iOs 5.1.1,( I know I need an update!) I want to update it to iOs 7, if I've backed up to iCloud will my contacts, pictures and text messages be saved and able to be restored if lost? I recently backed up to the iCloud as recently as this morning at 2AM.

    OCD with good reason
With a second backup, as you now have, you are well protected.  The update makes a backup to use for restoring after the install but with another you should be in great shape.
Just take you time and be patient, these can take a while to complete depending on server load, connection speed, etc.

  • Contact pictures not showing on iPhone in iMessage

Hello, my contact picture and my mother-in-law's contact picture does not show in iMessage on our iPhones. The pictures show up on our iPads though. How would we fix this?

This is not a feature on the phone but is on the ipad.

  • How to get contact pictures off iPhone

I saved a picture with most of my contacts on my iPhone. Now I'd like to get those pictures off of the iPhone and onto a computer. Can someone help?
So you know, I took the contact pictures from directly within the contact editor. I've tried sync'ing to my computer, but I only get thumbnails on my computer when I want the whole picture (I'm going to transfer the pictures to another iPhone).
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I have no clue, but don't think resolution is all that crucial.
Even a low-res picture can help preserve an important memory. Or something that makes a good phone contact picture may likely also make a good avatar for flickr, twitter, etc, and it would not need to be full resolution for such purposes.
Nothing taken with the iPhone is all that high-res anyhow. IIRC, pix assigned on the phone show up full-screen, so it's probably not as low-res as the teeny photo assigned on the desktop and transferred via sync.
Incidentally, google turned up this method of retrieval, using the Mac:
If you click "edit" on the contact's entry in Address Book and then double click inside their picture, it will appear as a somewhat bigger version, which you can copy with command-C. But it's a far cry from full-resolution.

I can't test it, though, as I don't sync contacts, and really have no clue whether the iPhone sync contact pictures to Outlook on Windows, which I assume the OP uses.
