IPhone could not sync because the iPhone is disconnected

I have downloaded iTunes 8, but when syncing my phone and trying to download the newest iPhone software (2.1), I keeep getting an error message that reads as follows:
"iTunes could not sync ^0 to the iPhone "xxxx's iPhone" because the iPhone is disconnected".....when it is indeed NOT disconnected. Any ideas or fixes? The new iPhone software has been downloaded on iTunes, but not yet downloaded to my phone due to the aforementioned error message.

I am having a similar problem since going to iPhone 2.1 and iTunes 8.0. My iPhone sees my computer, and my computer sees it, but iTunes does not launch or see my iPhone, so I can no longer sync (running Vista, btw). Would be grateful for suggestions.
