Iphone did not restore

iphone 3gs. started the iOs 6 friday night. saturday, phone is stuck on the iTunes screen (iTunes icon w a USB cable). i have windows 7, iTunes 10.7. when i connect the phone to iTunes, it says "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. you must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." i have done that. i did a restore on the phone, 3 hrs later, it is finished. the iPhone is still stuck on the iTunes screen. there is no apple store nearby and the at&t store says they can't help me. they told me to do what i have already done. reset the phone, restore the phone, etc. nothing is working. help!

I agree that it's probably not a bug. The problem is that I didn't sync any of this stuff with iTunes in the first place. Unfortunately, although using apple products is supposed to be easy, I don't find syncing or updating the iPhone easy at all. So far it's been a time consuming process that has resulted in missing data twice.
That little gripe aside, I'm trying to understand the process so it can be easier for me moving forward.
Right now the best solution I have is to go through my purchase history and redownload all of the songs (since they aren't on iTunes - I bought them directly from my phone) and redownload the applications I want to my computer. Then I will have to sync the computer with the iPhone.
I'm just wondering if there is any better process. I'm also wondering, for future reference, what exactly is backed up when iTunes backs up the phone? And does anyone have any tips for avoiding these types of troubles in the future?
It makes me worry about keeping anything important on my iPhone because the last two times I have tried to update, the phone has lost data because the update didn't work.

Yes - I connected my phone to my computer / Itunes and went into the apps section, but from there I have no idea how to manage the push notifications. I even tryied going into itunes that is installed on my phone. I still cannot find anyplace to manage these popups. I have also gone into settings - notifiations - and tried turning all notifications for these apps all off but that didnt work either. I did not restore my new phone from back up because I did not realize I needed to restore and not just activitate it. If all you want is your old photos, you could backup your new phone using iTunes, then restore it from your iCloud backup, import the old photos to your computer, then restore it from the backup your made in iTunes returning your newer data to your phone. If you want your old photos on your phone, sync them there from your computer using iTunes. The process would look like this:
Connect your phone to your computer, when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Transfer Purchases; right-click again and select Backup.
Disconnect from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to return it to new
Go through the activation setup, choosing to Restore from iCloud backup. Make sure your phone is plugged into a charger and has access to wi-fi as this can take hours to complete.
When complete, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences. On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
Now import the old photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
When done, open iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose the backup you made in step 1.
Go to the Photos tab and select the photos you want to sync to your phone and sync.

Restore it to factory settings, then set it up from your back up. Did this last year when I got my new iPod, and it worked. I have no idea why syncing OTA can sometimes glitch, but hopefully this will help.

Sync from iTunes.
Connect your iPhone to your computer. Select iPhone under 'Devices' on iTunes left Pane, then select 'Apps' tab on the right Pane. Make sure SYNC APPS box is checked then click the SYNC button on the lower right window.
Alternatively, you can re-download individually from your Device

This error generally indicates a hardware failure. Bring the phone to Apple for evaluation.

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.

I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

Do you recall what you did? if you remove an extension through the Add-ons page or use Firefox's Reset feature, normally your passwords are preserved. Not sure what else would have been recommended.

I would like to know if there is a better to fix this since this iphone has been jailbroken. Google search only shows stuff that talks about installing software that has to do with jailbreaking. I just need to restore back to normal. Thank you!

If the phone has already been set up, you will need to go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to be able to go through the setup again. This time use Restore from Backup.

I was trying to update iphone 4 with new iOS 7 and all of a suddent the phone is stuck in restoration mode and while trying to update with new iOS, it give an error message that reads like "iphone could not restored. An unknown error occured (16)" in itune page. I am not able to figure out what is causing it and how could it be resolve? please help with the probable options.

If you read the error messages in the support document that you linked from, you can see that error 16 can be traced to either a USB error, or a hardware error. I would try the recommendations under those sections in the support document and see if you can take care of it. Otherwise, I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar at Apple to have the hardware checked.
