IPhone doesn't make a noise when a text is received
I just got a brand new iPhone 3G. All of the sound works, except when I receive a text, it only vibrates and doesn't make the sound I've set it to. Ringtones, voicemail alerts, sent texts, alarms, etc., all make their appropriate noises. It's ONLY when I receive a text it does not.
My volume is all the way up and on, it's set on vibrate and ring.
I've noticed this issue too...am I being dumb? Did I miss the reason for this? And is there a bug fix? I've tried selecting a different text alert sound, but to no avail...

Go to Settings>Notifications and turn alerts/sounds on for the app(s) in question. Not all apps have all options.

My iPhone doesn't make a sound when I receive a text, even though it's on loud.
When a message comes through on my iPhone it doesn't give and text tone to say it has arrived. It will show it on the screen as normal when the home button is pressed. I have checked my handset is not on mute and the volume is full. It is not set to vibrate in any way. How can I fix this?

Is Do Not Disturb turned on?
Is the volume turned up?
Is there a valid notification sound selected for the contact or general text messages? -
It will still play my music out of The speaker. But when I get a message or someone calls me it only vibrates doesn't make any noise. And if I try and watch anything on YouTube I need to put my headphones into hear it.
Check the Mute/Silent Switch on the Side...
Have a look in Settings > Sound...

IPhone only makes alert noises when screen is lit up
For some reason my iPhone now only makes alert noises for new emails, texts, etc if the screen is lit up. If the screen is black, it doesn't make any noise so i never know i got an email or text. Is there a setting for this somewhere?
Go into Settings > Notification Center and tap each app to see if "Show on lock screen" is set to ON (green side showing)

It sounds like you are unable to see your iPod Touch screen, as it stays black but it makes the connection tone when you plug in the USB cable. Use these steps to resolve the issue with the iPod from the following article:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.

Could be a poor ground. Try plugging the monitor directly into the wall (no power strip) and see what happens.

MacBook Air - Bottom sheet of metal seems loose. It makes a noise when I put pressure on it, and the screw looks slightly misplaced.

I'm also not sure what you want to accomplish by this. Until you hit the "call" button, the phone is not 'off hook' like a traditional landline would be. There is no such thing as a dial tone on any cell phone. The dial tone was simply a carrier signal from the central office that prepared that end to listen for the pulses (later tones) generated when you dialed.
