IPhone freezes in first step of sync

It crashed some days ago, I did a hard reboot but it was sluguish and would not go beyond the first step of sync, or when much, go into step 2 and then loop back to step one. I resetted the thing but the problem continues. I got my contacts in it yet, but all else, apps, music, photos were lost and I cannot reinstall the apps I already own.

Make sure you have the following steps in order in your process chain.
1.Start Process Variant.
2.Delete Indexes step.
3.Load data.
4.Create Indexes.
5.Roll up (if required)
6.Compression(if required)
7.Completion job.
8.PSA deletion(if required)
I process chain should allways start with a start Process variant step.

Remove the song in question from the sync list and see if the rectifies the problem.
If it does, then iTunes believes the song no longer exists on your drive and that will need to be corrected.

IPhone freezes when sync is in 'backup' stage

I recently started getting freezes every time I sync. Its very predictable:
connect iPhone
sync begins
sync starts to 'backup'
iphone freezes
This happens regardless if its a automatic sync or if I turn that off and do it manually. The only way to sync is to bypass the backup step by changing sync settings and hitting apply.
Sometimes if I delete the backup and it has to make a fresh one it will work, but the last time I tried this it did not (first time it failed to work).
I called apple and they had no idea and said it needs service. I can't test it on a different Mac...maybe user account...so I'm not sure if its a software thing with my system.
FYI...I have restarted, reset, reinstalled re-everything. I have done all the usual steps. NO matter how much or how little data I sync, it freezes so turning off photos/music/etc does not work.
Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. In a different thread I have found a partial solution; it will do an automatic sync without the "apply" trick but it will not make a back up:

Steps to Sync'ing iPhone with a new computer after crash on old PC

Hi all,
My first post here and please allow me to say I reluctantly post as I hate wasting peoples time but could do with some handholding and advice. Hopefully it's just a simple case of you guys saying 'YES!'.
Here's a sort of potted timeline history as to what has occurred:
My iPhone 3GS was backed up via sync to 2 different [location] PCs.
The main location was here at 'home' where I managed my Music Library and Apps on a Vista based laptop.
My 'Work' PC simply dealt with sync of Contacts with a folder in Outlook.
The home PC was backed up fully typically once a fortnight.
A few weeks ago, my home PC had a catastrophic failure and it is clear I can't recover from the HDD.
I restored the key folders from the backup to a 'from backup' folder on the new PC and not the same folder structure as it has Windows 7.
From this folder I moved the entire contents of my music folder into Windows 7's music folder (and there is a sub-folder in there called 'itunes').
So, after reading a couple of threads, bizzarely enough, this one on iPad seems the nearest scenario to mine http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11527315
user, 'virtualgeo' summarises neatly the steps of sync'ing so I guess this would figure the same here but with an iPhone.
So I've just installed the latest iTunes on my PC and I'm ecstatic to see all my music and apps appear on running up iTunes for the first time.
I've gone to Edit>Preferences>Devices and checked the box next to "Prevent your iPod from automatically syncing"
However I see no previous backups being shown in this window. Is it worth recovering this from my backup?
I've also authorised the new computer successfully.
So I was going to continue following virtualgeo's steps in the thread but not sync'ing contacts if that looks sensible?
Anything else I should do before connecting my iPhone to iTunes?
And out of interest, should I be backing up my iTunes separately to my PC backup?

Iphone 3gs doesnt pass the first part of syncing

I plug my iphone 3gs into the computer and it starts the sync with itunes but it never passes the first step. The loading button turns as if its doing something and I wait HOURS and it never finishes syncing.

If you have a Windows computer open a command line window with Administrator privileges and type the following command:
netsh winsock reset
Then reboot your computer. If that doesn't fix it your backup may be corrupted. Delete it by going to Preferences in iTunes, Devices tab.

QT 7.2 & iPhone - First Step to Ringtones?

The new QT 7.2 has an export to iPhone and iPhone cellular.
It only shows as "Movie", but exports "audio only" files also.
Could this be the first step in giving us personalized ringtones?

This is very interesting. I just downloaded QT 7.2 because of your post. There are obviously two options, export to iPhone and export to iPhone (cellular). I tried both of them. Export to iPhone appears to convert the movie into mp4 format with little change to the file size. On the other hand, export to iPhone (cellular) reduces the file size to 1/10 of the original size. I am not sure how one can use the latter option. Does anyone have any clue?

It does say in the iTunes status window.
If for music, try deselecting Sync Music under the Music tab followed by a sync. This will remove all music from your iPhone.
Follow this by reselecting Sync Music making your selections below followed by another sync.

IPhone freezes on sync during back up

My iPhone freezes when I sync. Before updating to 3.0 it would freeze when transferring purchases.
Specifically the dictionary.com app. I removed that app and it seemed to work. But after updating, I don't
even get to the transferring purchases. It starts to back up then freeezes. Don't want to lose all my purchases.
If I cancel the backup it seems to synch the mail, contacts, etc. Just fine. Thoughts? Thanks.

It was telling you that you needed Mac OS 10.6.8 or later, not itunes 10.6.8
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

IPhone freezing when installing or uninstalling application during sync

hi,
I've been running to issues with iPhone freezing during install and uninstalling of Applications during iTunes sync. The installation or remove seems to complete after I force reboot iPhone, but sort of troublesome as I'm having to reboot iPhone for every app I try to install or remove. Also, when trying to install or remove application from iPhone's appstore, iPhone gets very unstable and the installation or remove of application never completes.
Is anyone running into this issue? Any workaround (maybe I need to use Mac instead of windows xp ... ?)

I think finally figured out the problem...
This was due to one of the application I had (purchased) installed called "Wisdom dictionary".
This has been taken off of iTunes already but apparently this application was causing other application to not install. The application is about 120 megs, and the company is currently investigating some memory issue related to expanding the installer. It appears to be Apple issue, they are in contact with Apple, but apparently there is no info from Apple when the issue would be addressed....
Anyway, without this application, my iPhone so far has been working pretty well.
It may be possible other large apps may have similar issues.... not sure.
