IPhone Gen1 sim into a 3GS phone

I have a 1st generation iPhone. I am purchasing a used iPhone 3gs and want to know if I can take the sim card out of my 1st gen and put it into the 3gs and start using it. I wish to know if the phone works before paying for it.
I know that my data plan will increase from 20 to 30 so I am not sure how all of this works.

The SIMs are compatible. Most likely you will need to contact AT&T to change the IMEI listed on your account and have them move you from the iPhone(EDGE) data plan to the "Smartphone" data plan. Make sure they also update your settings for SMS/MMS so that you can actually receive MMS messages on your "new" device.

A SIM card is a SIM card. It has been possible to use an activated iPhone SIM card with another GSM phone since day one over 3 years ago. What isn't possible is taking an activated SIM card used with another GSM phone and simply inserting the SIM card in an iPhone without activating the SIM card with the iPhone via the iTunes activation process.

Before your advice had been down to my local carphone warehouse shop who quickly said it was faulty and needed returning!!

Is it possible to use my sim card in my iPhone 3G and place it in a used 3Gs that I may obtain via eBay?

Yes, it will work just fine. However, remember the iphone stores no data on the sim, thus your iphone contacts(unless already stored on the other phone) will not be present.

You need to use the SIM that comes with the iphone and get the iphone plan. IPhone and it's SIM are "married" for lack of a better term.
You can import the contacts from your SIM into the iphone.

iphone 3gs can not talk on or recieve calls, but every thing works, apps., music, internet, ect.. put sim card in another phone and able to call and recieve calls, what happened.

Make an appointment at the genius bar and see if they can help you get it out. Hopefully, you didn't physically damage the phone. Nano-SIMs are thinner than Micro-SIMs, as well as being smaller.
Then, go to your carrier and get an actual Nano-SIM.

1). Are you positive the phone is not locked? Where did you buy it? Did you get it unlocked from your original carrier? Only Apple sells unlocked phones in most countries.
2). Did you try with a diffrent SIM. MAybe the one you have is defective.
3). Does the Spnaish carrier you are using support the iPhone? Who told you it is a handset issue?
