IPhone & Gmail

My question has to do with syncing mail accounts between MacMail on my Macbook and my iPhone. It seems when deleting emails from a Gmail account on my computer, I also have to delete the emails on my iPhone. My other accounts sync automatically. (.mac and as well another IMAP account) Is this because gmail is a POP account?
I wanting to know if there is a setting to change on my computer/iphone/gmail account to save a bit of time?
As always, thanks for the help.

Sounds like you created your Gmail account as a POP account with the email client used on your Mac for accessing the account. If so and you transferred the account settings for your Gmail account to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process, your Gmail account is also being accessed as a POP account with the iPhone's mail client.
If you manually created your Gmail account with the iPhone's mail client using the Gmail account preset, the account was created as an IMAP account.
If you are using the Mail.app on your Mac for accessing your Gmail account, at the Mail.app menu bar go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
Select your Gmail account. Under the Account Information tab for your Gmail account, what is shown as the account type?
If a POP account, the only way to change the account type with the Mail.app is by deleting and recreating the account selecting IMAP as the account type when doing so.
You can get the required account settings for accessing the account as an IMAP account with the Mail.app on your Mac via Google's Gmail account website.

  • Make my regular email automatically forward to my iphone (gmail) account

This is probably easy - but please help anyway: I am trying to get my regular home email (cox) to automatically go to my iphone (gmail) account. Can anyone
out there give me simple step by step instructions?
    Thanks in advance

Question for Cox to answer. But why not set your iPhone up to grab the mail on your Cox POP (I assume) account? Just set it to leave msgs on the server so you can archive them later in your computer. That's what I do with Roadrunner (using AuthSMTP for sending -- $24/yr) and all replies from the iPhone appear as from my normal email acct. Plus I can use AuthSMTP for sending from my MacBook when traveling.

  • Iphone gmail suddenly not working via Safari

Yesterday, when using Safari to log into gmail on the iphone, I no longer get the html 5 version, only a white page with some email lines on it. I have reset cookies, etc under safari preferences and deleted the database for gmail. Anyone else seeing an issue?

I can't figure this out. When I log into gmail.com with my iphone, I get a super watered down version. It doesn't look like the normal one I usually get. I went into Safari Preferences and cleared everything and removed all databases. It's like gmail won't put the html5 version back. I am wondering if you reset what I did above, if you would start having the same issue.

  • IPhone, Gmail, and Outlook 2007 - A question please

    Hello all,
I just recently installed Outlook 2007 on my Windows XP machine. It is set up with my gmail account.
I have iPhone successfully looking at the same gmail account.
Here's what I'm asking if it can be done:
If I access/read my email from Outlook, then it will NOT show up on my iPhone.
If I access/read my email from my iPhone, then it will NOT show up on Outlook.
    Is that possible?
I guess I'm hoping that I don't come home, read some email from Outlook for a few days.
Then go to my iPhone and see that I have 132 "unread" emails at Gmail. Yes, they've been read...but my iPhone doesn't know that.
Am I making sense on my request?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Ted

    You're welcome.
I could not find a similar setting on the iPhone.
If you are accessing the account as a POP account with the iPhone's mail client, the setting for removing messages from the server is at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Select the account. Selected Advanced at the bottom. Under Incoming Settings, at Delete from server.
If you used the Gmail account preset on the iPhone when creating the account, the account was created as an IMAP account with the iPhone's mail client.
And I'm confused. If Outlook is taking the message and NOT leaving it on the server, then how is iPhone getting the message?
The iPhone's mail client will not receive the message, and the same with Outlook if you select remove messages from the server when downloaded for the account settings with the iPhone's mail client.
You indicated that you want the following:
If I access/read my email from Outlook, then it will NOT show up on my iPhone.
If I access/read my email from my iPhone, then it will NOT show up on Outlook.
Accessing the account as a POP account with both email clients and selecting to remove messages from the server when downloaded with both email clients will provide this.
With an IMAP account, all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account. Read a received message with Outlook and when checking the account's Inbox mailbox with the iPhone's mail client, the message will be available in the account's Inbox mailbox but will be marked as read, and vice-versa.

  • Verizon Iphone - GMAIL FETCH NOT WORKING

Like everyone else I just switched from AT&T to Verizon on both my and my wifes I4's and we absolutly love the service...however I've found a problem.
GMAIL FETCH doesn't work period. The only way I can pull new mail is to manually open the mail program and refresh by tabbing to each of my folders I have setup for my pop/imap mail accounts within GMAIL.
(if you don't understand how to integrate pop/imap with gmail please do not respond to this thread)
Anyway, no matter what interval I set my fetches to it never fetches... I've deleted my GMAIL account from my phone and re-installed but not luck. I've read several posts referring to PUSH not working on the Verizon iPhone and a few people commented the FETCH isn't working for them either and I thought we should have a seperate thread for this issue.

hmm...well i deleted the gmail account for a second time and it appears to be working on a 15 min fetch...
i'll test for the rest of the day and post results but this may have fixed it.

  • IPhone, Gmail and automatic message deletion

I set up my Gmail account on my iPhone 4S. It does some weird things like downloading 500 spam messages to my phone automatically, which I really don't need. But my main question is that when I delete a message on my phone from the Gmail account, it also deletes it from my main computer. How can I change this? I like to keep emails on my laptop, but delete duplicates on my iPhone. I don't want to delete them entirely. I found no setting in the iPhone or in my Apple Mail that controls this. Generally I don't know if the control of this is on my laptop, on my iPhone, or somewhere in Gmail, and how to change it.
    Thank you.

Have you confirmed your account settings for removing messages from the server when downloaded by the Mail.app on your computer, and with the iPhone's Mail client?

  • Email -  settings for gmail on iphone; Gmail or Exchange?? what's the dif??

hey there, can anyone itemize the differences between using Exchange for GMail, versus just using the GMAIL setup for email on the iphone4?
In the past i have had IMAP and GMAIL, and the single exchange.. NOW I am using exchange for access to all my gmail accounts. why should I use the GMAIL settings, instead of Exchange? for my gmail activity?
    thanks

    Thank  you for your help.
I've read in numerous places that Safari should play .mp4 files fine and many of the iPhone presets output .mp4 files.  In general, I've read, including at Apple's website, to enode using H.264 MPEG4 part 10, AAC audio, etc.  I have tried creating custom presets and different subsettings, such as bitrate, frames, etc.
I cannot get anything to work correctly when trying to view the video using Safari on iPhone or iPad.
Anyone else know of any specific settings that will work?

  • TS3899 Why doesn't an email that's deleted on my iPhone (gmail) delete on my iPad ?

I have an iPhone 4 using gmail. When I delete an email on the phone why doesn't it delete on my iPad ?  All incoming email syncs fine.  Deletions don't sync. What am I doing wrong?

You must be using a gmail POP account.  This type of account does not keep devices in sync.  Each device retrieves emails from the server independently of other devices.  If you delete on one device, that has no effect on the others.

  • How do I reconcile out-of-sync iPhone/Gmail contacts?

I have always synchronized contacts on my iPhone (currently a 4S with iOS 7.0.6) with Gmail via CardDAV and it has worked well. However, some time ago my default iPhone contacts account got switched from Gmail to "On My iPhone" (i.e., in Settings >> Mail, Contacts, Calendars >> [Contacts] Default Account). I don't know when or how this happened, but because of this some contacts that I added on my phone have not been synchronized with Google. I now have some contacts that are on my Phone and in Gmail, and others that are just on my phone. How can I merge the now out-of-sync contact lists on my phone and in Gmail? Any help appreciated.

    In what app?
Have you restarted or reset the device?

  • IPhone Gmail bug

If you add a new Gmail IMAP account using the "Gmail" logo option, you don't have the ability to change the behaviors of the "Sent Mail" from the Advanced Tab. However, if you add a Gmail IMAP account using the "Other" option, then you do have the option to change the behavior of "Sent Mail" from the Advanced Tab.

The "bug" part is that if you include an IMAP Prefix and you don't have the option to set the "Sent Behavior," then any mail you compose will not be visible under "Sent Messages." It's puzzling why a creating a standard IMAP account gives you more advanced IMAP options than when creating a Gmail IMAP account on the iPhone. Also, if you sync your mail.app settings through iTunes, and mail.app has a Gmail account with an IMAP Prefix and specific "Sent Mail" behavior, none of these particulars get synced to the iPhone. Thus, you have to setup these Gmail particulars manually on the iPhone.

  • Iphone, Gmail, alias, sent mail

I have been trying to use Gmail with my Iphone, while using alias (an email address other than my Gmail address) for my outgoing address. It works, except that I can't get the messages I send into the sent mail folder. If I substitute my Gmail address for the alias, the outgoing messages then show right up in sent mail. But I don't want to do that; I would like my recipients to see the alias.
One potential solution that seemed momentarily promising was to enter my Gmail address, followed by a comma and the alias. But in the Iphone mail app, you can't use a comma on the line where you enter your outgoing email address.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get my mail into that sent mail folder? Thanks

It seems this is the desired behavior in Mail, as I don't need the [Gmail] folders to appear since the mail is all in the Mac Mail folders.
Of course, this might all break again when I upgrade to Mavericks :-(

  • IPhone Gmail IMAP and Document Attachments

    Hi, first post....
I've recently set up my iPhone's mail app for Gmail IMAP which is great apart from the fact that Word.doc attachments now appear inline with the text of the email complete with lots of garbled letters and numbers, rather than as the neat attachments I received when using Gmail with POP. Strange because it seems to work OK for photos.
I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this issue, whether this is a feature of the way IMAP works, or whether there is some setting in Gmail or in mail on the iPhone that I am overlooking which might solve the issue.
    Any help would wonderful

So to start to answer my own question, this seems to only be a problem when sending mail from the Mac mail client to iPhone mail client via Gmail, with other services (web mail, outlook) there isn't a problem!
However it does seem to be a Mac mail client wide issue (10.4.11) since sending from my Mac to iPhone using a different account (not Gmail) yields the same result

  • Iphone gmail/email question

    Hello there,
I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me. I have two email accounts set up on my 3G iphone. The Gmail account is set up and works fine. I was wondering if there was a way to avoid my emails (sent, inbox or otherwise) to NOT be deleted from my account......but only deleted from my phone....if that makes sense? If I delete anything to do with Gmail on the phone, it also is deleted from the entire account. Is there a way around this?
When I use my standard pop3 account, I can delete all the emails on the phone when read or dealt with but they still come down on to my mac as normal. It's just the Gmail I was trying to figure out.
So: When deleted from the phone......I can still access them when at home online.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I asked something similar in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7758665#7758665) but it's still not working the way I need it to.
For me,I need to delete emails from the phone, but leave them on my server; I set it up as POP, but then all the emails I sent were also downloaded to the phone, and I send out about 100 emails a day, so that doesn't work for me. I deleted that and set it up as IMAP, but now, like you, when I delete a message from my iPhone, it no longer appears in my gmail inbox on my computer, it's in All Mail.
I don't have time to check different places for my mail--I had a Blackberry before the iPhone and it seemed so simple, so I need to figure out how to streamline it on the iPhone too!
