IPhone Headphone Jack

I just upgraded from the original Iphone to the 3G. When I plug in the headphones that came with the new IPhone 3G, the plug will not go all the way in. It stops at the 3rd white mark on the headphone plug, and the result is that it is very loose and comes out easily. The headphones on the Iphone original would plug in all the way and feel tight. Is this right??

The iPhone headset plug should go in all the way to the heatshrink material and should be quite snug, you should be able to lift the iPhone by the headset connection (not that i'd make this a generally good thing to try)

So recently my headphone jack has been playing up, where it ends up with loads of static and the vocals are oddly quiet and echoey, but it seems to correct itself if I jiggle the jack around a little, which obviously must be damaging, so I've stopped doing it. I bought the phone from Carphone Warehouse in September and was wondering how I can go about getting this fixed? I didn't take out any apple care or anything, but surely I'm still covered by some sort of warranty? If not, how much will Apple charge for this to be repaired/replaced?

The warranty is 1 year. If it's less than a year old, and there are no visible signs of damage, then it should be covered under warranty. If it is more than a year old, then you should be able to get an out of warranty replacement from Apple ($149 in the U.S. You'll have to check on the price in the UK).

Grinding down the iPhone headphone jack itself... anyone done it?

Because I just got a first gen iPhone, and this is ridiculous. Sure, I could modifiy every 3.5mm cable or headphone I have, or I could just take a dremel to the freakin iPhone. How close is anything to that jack? If I flare out the opening will I hit anything?

Here is a picture of the back case showing the jack opening.
It looks quite thin to me and I don't think I would want to risk taking a dremmel to it. I'd go with the other option and buy a simple adapter. You can use the same adapter for all your different headphone.

Something stuck in my friends iPhone Headphone Jack! HELP

So my friend's iPhone 4S (out of warenty anyway) had a headphone accessory in the iPhone, and it snapped off. This plasticy bendable rubber is now stuck in the headphone. To make matters worse she tried to pick it out with a thumb tack, only making it go deeper. What can she do to get it out! A vacume cleaner will not work either...

Take it to the Apple Store and get the phone replaced.

I don't believe I said video out DOES work through the headset jack, I said that it worked through the 32 pin connector. An update to this is that some of my TV sets in the house will allow audio in Ipod mode and some won't. Still haven't figured out how to allow audio through the bottom connector in my car either. Of course this is because I am passing it through a tv tuner in the car and if the tuner doesn't get video it just doesn't pass anything through.
Of course I believe your solution below for the audio would work but of course I'm going for the cleanest look I can get also.
I have considered putting another fm transmitter in my glove boxe where the a/v connector to the tuner is and just plug the left and right audio into it.

Maybe a fine nail or needle since the opening is so small. I, too, do not see how anything could get in the port.

Headphone jack audio problem

I have a confusing problem, any music played through my iphone headphone jack (ie a variety of headphones/adapers tried) sounds garbled unless the bitrate is 320kpbs. All music sounds fine when played through a powered amp, or through the internal speakers. This made me think it was a problem with the headphone jack however, as i stated before audio files with a bit rate of 320 kbps work fine.
Any ideas why this glitching is occuring?

The bitrate for the majority of my music is 128kbps, and some 256kbps, and I've experienced no such problem.
What did you use for the encoding when the music was imported into iTunes - MP3 or AAC, etc.? iTunes and the iPhone supports several, but may like AAC better, which also uses the least amount of storage space for each song on your computer.
But since the music plays without being garbled otherwise, sounds like your iPhone's headphone port has a problem.

As randers4 said, use canned compressed gas and NEVER BY MOUTH. That blows humidity and moisture right on the water sensor at the base of the jack, possibly voiding the warranty and corroding the jack and other parts.

IPhone 4 headphone jack not working right.

So the headphone jack in my iPhone 4 i don't think is working properly. The right headphone does not put as much sound out as the left. I'm not sure why it was working perfectly just yesterday. I haven't dropped it or got water in it or anything. I tried plugging it in and unplugging it a few times, i reset my phone, turned it off then on and nothing seems to be working. So this is a strange situation, and I'll try to explain in depth so that someone might be able to suggest a solution. As reference, I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased in late-February. I've had every other model of iPhone except for the first iPhone, so I am pretty familiar with the device. I used to be on AT&T, and switched to Verizon when I upgraded to the iPhone 5.
Two days ago, I was on a six hour road-trip, and I'd been playing my music like normal through my car's auxillary cable. After stopping for lunch, I went to plug my music again, but once the music started to play, I realized that only the drums were playing at normal levels while the vocals were very, very soft. I switched through a few different songs, and realized that all the songs were being played at different levels; sometimes the backup vocals were normal levels while the instrumentation and lead vocals were quiet, or vice versa. I decided to plug my iPhone in to charge, and when I did this, the audio levels were all normal. However, the iPhone was NOT charging. I removed the charger, and the audio went back to being weak and distorted. I went back and forth at this for a bit, trying to figure out what was going on.
Since then and after some testing, I realize that my iPhone will now only charge anywhere EXCEPT in the car charger (I simply use my USB cable that came with my iPhone and plug it into the power adapter I have in the car). This morning, I tested the audio in my home speaker system, and I had the same audio issues. Only half the song's tracks would be at normal audio levels, while the other half would be at a very quiet, almost nonexistent level. I tried plugging my charger into the phone to see if that'd make a difference, but instead of the audio going back to normal like it does in the car, the music stopped and there was just crackling and very noisy distortion sounds.
I'm super confused and not sure what to do. This has never happened to me with any of my iPhones. I am updating my software right now, and am hoping that that may help somehow. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated!

Broken Iphone 3g Headphone Jack

Recently my headphone jack no longer works properly. When ever I put in headphones it sounds as though the connections aren't being properly made. Also the silver lining at the top of the jack has gone away. This happened through no fault of my own and has not even been a month since the warranty ended. This is my second iPhone due to accidental damage to the first. Is there anything I can do because it is completely ridiculous to pay 200$ to have it repaired when the warranty has only JUST ended, and it's not even a main/expensive component.
I've read some other post stating to use a pin to move the contacts inward, has anyone tried and had success doing this? Thanks in advanced.

Moving pins in the jack worked on my laptop.
But it was done at the store with tech using non conductive tool.
I was quite surprised it worked. I didn't have any crisis moment of tripping to cause the issue.
Right out of the box, the jack was bad. Headset plug would not insert all the way.
I'm not sure if some male jack ends are slightly different, but it seems to me that's when it happened between 2 headsets.
