IPhone ignoring artist "sort as" metadata

So, I recently noticed that my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.2, is ignoring my "sort as" field for artists.
I have painstakingly changed every artist in my iTunes to have a "Sort As" in the artist names, so that it sorts by last name (example - Artist: John Lennon; Sort As: Lennon, John).  This sorts by last name, UNLESS there is a name in the "Album Artist" field, then it will sort by that field.  I delete the data out of "Album Artist," so whatever is in artist "Sort As" works great.  The iTunes on my laptop sorts it perfectly, and for a while it worked fine on my iPhone as well.
But now I'm noticing (and this may have been before I updated to 8.2, I only noticed it today) that all the artist sorting on my iPhone is by band name or artists FIRST name (with a weird exception of Jacques Dutronc, which still sorts under "D").
Obviously it's not the end of the world, the music is there and I'm capable of backwards thinking it, but it's a little frustrating that I've spent years relabeled tracks to avoid this very thing, and now it's just ignoring it.  Luckily it's not a problem on my computer's iTunes (where most of my music resides).
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Settings > Music > unselect "Group by Album Artist" seemed to work for me.

  • IPhone 4S artist sort order problem

Running iTunes 10.5 and iOS5 on iPhone 4S and having this problem where when i go to Music and then the Artists tab, the artists are not listed under the proper letter.  So like when I click on the "V" on the side where all the letters are, it goes to V, but all the bands listed under that start with S.  then when I get down to "Z" all the bands start with T, and that it.  So I cant get to any of the artists that start with letters past T.  The songs are on the iPhone, when I search for them they show up and I can play them and they are still on their proper playlists.  But still pretty annoying for when i just want to hear a specific artist.  Any ideas?

  • Iphone ignoring song metadata changes

Why are song metadata changes made in iTunes not respected by iPhone, for purchased (via iTunes) content ?
I have a large classical music collection, and I use composer surname as my primary sort method.  To do this, I blank the composer field for all non-classical music and ensure that for classical music, the composer name is listed by surname first - this means a lot of metadata changes.
This filing system works very nicely in ITunes on my computers and on my old iPods.
However, on the iPhone, my metadata changes are replaced by the original metadata for purchased content, so messing up my filing system.  This apparently is known and 'normal' apple behaviour.  And it is self-contradictory - for when i look at my device list of songs in iTunes on laptop, my metadata changes are listed as intact.  I'm not sure whether the iPhone is simply ignoring metadata changes or whether the original metadata is over-writing via iCloud.
My question is, why would anyone design the system to ignore a user's metadata changes when using the iPhone ?  In what way is this good ?  And why not have a simple toggle switch 'respect my metadata changes on device - on/off' ?  I can't believe I'm unique amongst Apple users in wanting to listen to classical music  on an iPhone?!
    many thanks Paul

  • Artist sort order problem

    Hi.
I have music sync'd via iTunes Match from my laptop to my iPad and to my iPhone. The names and order appear correct on both the laptop and on the iPad but on the iPhone several artists are either shown in all lower case or the last name will be used by the sort, rather than the first.
I've reset the artist, album artist and sort artist tags to different names (and they show up correctly then on the iPhone) and then set them back, but the problem remains.
I'm thinking that the iPhone has a corrupt file somewhere - but how can I reset that without losing everything on the phone?
A factory reset and restore from iCloud results in the same problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks guys.
    --Cynan.

I also have an Artist sort order problem. While the circumstances are quite different from yours, I wonder if it's due to a similar corruption problem. I don't use iTunes Match. I found Kenny G listed under letter T.

  • How do I remove all traces of  'album'? I do not want artwork, blank place holders, titles or artists sorted by album? I just want my music listed by title, artist or genre.

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • IPhone No Longer Sorts Podcasts By Release Date After 3.1 Update

After upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes 9.0(70) Podcasts on the iPhone no longer sort according to their release date. The ordering is definitely not alphabetical or any of the other user selectable sorting options. If I had to guess I'd say it's sorting them by reverse download order (which when you update less frequently than once a day is quite confusing since iTunes downloads most recent first). Is this a problem with the iPhone OS, iTunes or an option that I'm missing somewhere (the iTunes podcast tab is set to sort by release date).

I'm thinking this is not a iphone 3.1 upgrade issue, as the only thing I have upgraded is to iTunes 9 and I am having the exact same problem. After upgrading my phone did lock up really bad. The screen was on, was showing slide to unlock but was totally unresponsive to the home and sleep buttos. Plugging it back into the computer also did nothing. I had to hard restart it with the home and sleep button in sych.
My Podcasts have no sorting capability what so ever. There is no logical reason they are so jumbled up.

  • Help with Artist Sort Problem Needed...

This is a bit long, so I'll start with the three main questions and below them is the backstory and detail of the problem (I did do a search but nothing turned up):
    1) Does anyone know how to fix artist sorting issues where the artists are properly sorted (alphabetically by last name and band name) but there are constant grey-bar letter headings for the first name (sorry...I don't know how to explain better than I do below in detail)
    2) Will re-setting the Touch require I have to...
    a) re-add all the songs I've manually selected again
    b) re-input any data saved to apps (such as CarCare and
Pocketpedia) and if so, can I backup that data first?
    3) If all the re-doing in 2 above is necessary if I were to re-set the iPod, can anyone think of an alternative fix that would avoid a reset?
I might be able to get to an Apple store this weekend to ask a "genius" but I'm not that confident in them since I was given some incorrect information on how the Touch handles playlists at the time of original purchase.
    Okay... now, what happened:
I'm not sure what to make of this, fortunately playback and all main functions are unaffected. I have my iPod Touch 2g set for manual sync. Today, while I was charging it at work, my PC (WinXP) froze. I gave it plenty of time to unfreeze, but eventually had no choice but to do a hard reboot while the iPod said "syncing." I slid the slider to cancel the sync, but the iPod didn't respond. I unhooked it from the PC and it unfroze. I shut it down and re-started.
Everything seemed fine after the iPod reboot except that now, while the artists are still sorted alphabetically (I've manually set artists to sort by last name), there are headers using the first letter of the first name between each artist. So, for instance, this is how the top of my artist list looks now (lines below with just a letter are the grey divider bar with the alphabetical header):
    R
    Ryan Adams
    D
    Dave Alvin
    T
    Tori Amos
    E
    Eric Andersen
    A
    Apples in Stereo
    Arcade Fire
    L
    Louis Armstrong
    A
    Ataris
    ...etc.
This problem has not extended to album or song title fields, but for some reason, when scrolling through the album view using the index on the right, it moves fine until "O" -- then it sits still as I scroll down until it gets to "#", at which point it's resposnive again.
I've checked the music library on the iPod via iTunes and the artist sort fields are still correct.
Suggestions? I'm new to the Touch and am leery of doing a reset yet since it's taken time to figure out which songs from my 100+gb library to manually put on this. Also, I have no idea how it will affect the apps I've downloaded. There are some where I've saved data (such as CarCare and Pocketpedia) and I REALLY don't want to risk having to re-input all that data.
To anyone with any words of advice, thanks in advance.

This is an answer to only qestion 2. Yes restoring your ipod will delete all songs, apps, videos, etc., but you can back up settings like a passcode lock or screen brightness. But it will ask if you want to back up settings. If your'e on windows, in itunes go to file and down almost all the way you will see a "Tranfer purchases from (ex.) steves ipod" and that will make sure you have all your apps and music and other stuff.

  • Is album artist sort available on iPod classic now?

If I buy an iPod Classic today, is there an option to have artists sorted by album artist? Thank you

I'm fairly certain there have been no changes to the classic firmware.
The workaround is to set as a compilation or set a common artist.

  • Itunes 11 Book author and Album artist sort problems

(I've changed the name here, to protect the innocent and avoid comments about my taste. I shall call him 'Fred Anydude' )
I have an ebook by 'Fred Anydude'. He appears in book view under the [Authors section] in the right place i.e. with those Authors whose last name begins with 'A', (because the sort artist field has been set up as 'Anydude, Fred'.)
Then I acquire a music album, also by Fred Anydude (Hey, what can I say, he's talented). The problem is in the music view in the Artist section I expect Fred Anydude, to appear with the other artists beginning with F (as is the convention for music artist sort order), but he doesnt. He's appears with the A's again. The sort artist is blank in the case of the music album and its songs. So I set up the sort artist for the album and its tracks as Fred Anydude. I switch views, to give the opportunity for a refresh, I even restart itunes - Fred Anydude is still being sorted according to his book view sort artist despite what I've set up for his music: Still appearing with the A's
But to confuse matters, under Album view with the Album view sort order set to 'by Artist', the album does appear along with other artists beginning with F.
To make matters worse if I do a search for Fred Anydude, I only get shown the book in the results. The music doesn't even appear.
    Is there a fix?

I suppose a better way to differentiate between album artist and artist is to say Track Artist.

  • Can I sort on metadata?

I just posted a message asking about filtering on metadata, but I didn't want to confuse that thread with this second question:
Can I sort on metadata? For example, can I sort on "Date Time Original"?
I know I can sort on "Date Created," but that's not the same thing as the metadata's "Date Time Original" field. E.g., I have jpg files where the "Date Time Original" is in 1990 but the Date Created is in 2012. Sorting on Date Created doesn't order the files chronologically based on when the photo was taken.
    Thanks.

I have jpg files where the "Date Time Original" is in 1990 but the Date Created is in 2012. Sorting on Date Created doesn't order the files chronologically based on when the photo was taken.
To me it seems Date Time Original in Exif data from camera equals the Date Created from IPTC. This makes also some sense because exif is created using the Camera software and when you have set the date and time correctly this reflects the moment the file was created.
When using images that don't have its origin in a camera able to provide exif (analog camera or scanner etc.) you have to provide this data yourself and fill in the right places. I don't know if you were able to add this in the filed Date Time Created in an earlier version of PS file info using CS6 I can't find an editable field in the file info that is called 'Data Time Original', only date created is available.
Hence Bridge (although the options for filter and sort could be somewhat expanded) will not likely provide this option in future versions but you can always put a Feature Request for this, but if only 1 or a few people have the need for this it is not very likely to get realized I'm afraid.
So your only chance might be a script that reads your metadata and for example replaces the 'date created' data with the 'Date Time Original' data if this is in the metadata written.
You could try the dedicated Adobe Bridge Scripting Forum for this, their are some very helpful people in there:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/bridge/bridge_scripting
And make sure backing up the files before trying to alter them, if it screws things up you always have the originals to refer to.
Also a small tip that won't help you now but can do in the future. Think of a proper naming convention of your files and stick to it. Personal I rename all my files with first "YYYYMMDD" and then a short subject description followed by a sequence number for series of that same subject.
This will place your files always in a natural sort order for date. And when scanning pre digital files create a template for the metadata in Bridge with your common copyright info and use the IPTC core fields to immediately fill in the important fields like description, keywords, place and date created. You can select multiple files and use this template to ad the info in one go.

  • Artist Sorting Issues

Hey, I recently downloaded IOS 7 for my Ipod Touch. My problem is that songs not made by an artist show up under them. For example, I click "Artists" then scroll down to "Our Lady Peace." The songs are all separated by album, great. However, the song "Life" is on a compilation album, and so all the songs on there are showing up under "Our Lady Peace."
I only want to listen to Our Lady Peace songs, not all the other songs on the compilation album. What's the point of having an "artist" sorting option if its going to include compilation albums? I get that its showing all the albums, but since technically "Big Shiny Tunes" isn't acually an album by Our Lady Peace, why is it here?
Yes, sorting by album artist fixes this, but then it causes another problem. I have several "Now!" CDs, which means that I might only have one song by a particular artist. So instead of "Gangsta's Paradise" being sorted under "Coolio," the song is sorted under "Various Artists." So do I have to manually change the "Album Artist" for each individual "Now!" song, or is there another way?
    Thanks, Aaron
P.S. Sorry if my explanation is unclear or confusing.

I'm not sure if it's what you need or not, but under the settings and music there's one to turn sorting by author on or off. Maybe that can help?

  • IPhone ignores sync settings

my iphone ignores the option I've set to ignore syncing events older than _ days old. I have chosen 1 day and older to be ignored, yet iPhone still syncs all events in the past, and they stay there even if they're deleted from iCal.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Chris

As a first step, try resetting the sync history on your Mac which is done via iSync preferences with the iSync application located in your Applications folder.
After resetting the sync history on your Mac, restart your Mac and try syncing again.

  • Lost Sort Album Metadata

    Hello Everyone,
I've been applying Sort Album metadata to songs within iTunes. Unfortunately, when I attempt to change the song quality to a lower version using the "Create MP3 Version" function, this Sort Album metadata is not written to the new version of the file. Instead, it is simply written within the iTunes Library database. As a result, when the newer smaller version of the files are transferred to another computer - the Sort Album metadata is lost. Is there a way to force the writing of this data contained in the iTunes Library to each file?
    Thanks!
    Patrick

Thanks for your suggestions. The 'Show Camera Info' is selected. I tried your other suggestion, exporting a master. I then imported it with a new name back into Aperture. The new copy has all it's metadata intact so the data is there in the file it is just not displayed.
Even worse now, the affected pictures no longer display correctly, they are just a dull mess, presumably as there is no longer any RAW decoder applied.
I have already repaired then rebuilt the library with no improvement, in fact it is now worse as the picture itself is no longer displayed correctly after the rebuild.
Unless anyone has some ideas I think I can only export all my masters, then re-import them or maybe restore from a vault (losing my recent adjustments).

  • IOS 8.3 Music App Artist Sorting

This is not a new issue with iOS 8.3 but it does seem to have gotten worse with the new update.  I have noticed for a while that there is a problem with the sorting of artists in the iOS music app and I am not sure how to fix it.  I have the same exact music loaded onto my iPhone 6 as my old iTouch, which is running the latest version of iOS 5, but my iTouch does not have this problem.    There are many artists that are listed multiple times in iOS 8.3, but not iOS 5.  Just to be sure, I did go through and make sure that the artist names were the exact same in iTunes and that did nothing.  I also deleted all of my music off my phone and then put it back on and that did nothing either.  It is very annoying if I want to listen to an artist and have 5 different listings of them.  I have even noticed a couple of songs listed under the wrong artist, even though in iTunes the artist is labeled correctly.  Is anyone else having issues with the iOS music app or has anyone fixed these?
Also, a more minor problem, my music used to keep the last song I was listening to in the "now playing" section even after I quit the music app.  Now, whenever I quit the music app, the "now playing" doesn't show up when I open it again.  Is there a way to get that back?

Hi Dom, I think I got to the bottom of this but it took a lot of time and effort. There were a few songs that were showing up under multiple letters. For example, artist ABC was showing up under letter "A" and right in the middle of the "A"s the same group was showing up under letter "T". I had updated the metadata for ABC so it was properly showing up under the letter A but the cloud version of the song was showing up under "T" for some reason. I had to delete the ABC artist from my iPhone and then hide the cloud version of the artist/albums and then re-sync with my iTunes again.
I had to go through this process for 3-4 artists that were showing up under the wrong letter so once this was done, the scrolling is working again. It was time consuming and painful but I think it is working again.
    Regards, Ken

  • When I add artists to my ipod/iphone the artist name displays twice

When I go to add artists as a group to my ipod nano or iphone 4, the artist name comes up twice spelt differently.  eg I see, "Black Eyed Peas" and "The Black Eyed Peas" from the Artist check list.  Please note these songs are not on my iphone/ipod yet, this is me merely looking to select and add them to my iphone/ipod.  Some of the songs I have by The Black Eyed Peas are from different albums but I have ensured they are all sorted by "The Black Eyed Peas" under "Get Info".  I've also set the tracks to be 1 of 14 for one album and 1 of 1 for the songs that I got from compilation CD's.
I've found multiple help pages but none of them fixed the issue I am having.  I am using iTunes 12.0.1.26 for windows 7.  Can anyone fix this?  It's itunes that's the issue it's not the device I am tying to sync it to.

The same thing happened to me when I updated to the new software when iPhone 4S came out.
