Iphone in recovery mode after software update

Hello, I have just downloaded and upgraded my software on iphone 4.
It seemed to have taken about 2-3 hours.
There was an error (which I missed) and now I have on my phone the white apple sign, on my itunes it says - "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with itunes.
My only option on itunes is to restore to original settings, which Im guessing I will lose all my data etc?
Does anyone know of an alternative solution?
I have held down the home and power button but no luck.
Please help!

Try the steps:
How to perform a recovery-mode restore
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is already showing the "Connect to iTunes" screen, please go to step 5.
Connect your USB cable to your computer but not to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until step 3.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button down, connect the USB cable to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen. When this screen appears, you can release the Home button:
Note: If the image of a battery appears, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again. If you don't see the Connect to iTunes screen, try these steps 1 through 4 again.
iTunes should automatically open and display the following message:
"iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."
Note: If iTunes not open after two minutes, please open iTunes yourself.
Use iTunes to restore the device.

  • Iphone 4S stuck in DFU mode after software update

I tried to update my iPhone 4S but for some reason it failed and went into DFU mode. When I tried to restore the device from iTunes an error code (9) pops up. After several failed attempts I gave up and decided to visit an Apple store. To my disappointment, the restoration failed and because the device was out of warranty (bought in Oct 2011) I was offered a like for like handset for £149. But I declined, I couldn't grasp the fact that my phone stopped working due to a software update and I had to pay for another one. I was also told by the Apple rep that due to the age of some devices, they were not able to handle software updates! That really upset me because if I had known that, I would not have even bothered with updating my phone. Besides, I've had this phone for just under 3 years I didn't think it was that old to not be able to survive a software update.
Apologies for the rant.. but is there anyone who has/had same experience and is there no way to restore the device?

  • IPhone stuck in recovery mode after failed update.

Hi, I have a bad situation here... My iPhone 5 got stuck in recovery mode after I tried to update to iOS 7.1.1 from 7.0.4 and it failed (error code 6). If this was my iPod touch I would just restore it because all I have is music, but this iPhone has all my sisters graduation photos, important photos, important school documents, contacts, app data, videos from concerts. Etc. I was wondering if I could get the photos off the phone before restoring it, because they are important. I know I should've backed up my photos and made a backup of the phone, but I've been really busy with a lot of stuff. So I was just wondering if there is any way to get the photos and app data back. The app data doesn't really matter but the photos do. The device was not jailbroken or hacked in any way.
If you could help, tell me ASAP.

When your phone is in recovery mode, it's like it crashed.  The only way that you can get it out of recovery mode is by restoring, and this erases all your data as well.
You can believe what you wish by "reading all over the internet".  This is Apple's technical support forum.  We do know what we're talking about.
since you have very important photos on your phone, why haven't you been importing them to your computer as soon as possible after taking them?  This is how the phone is meant to be used.  Keeping critical data on only a device which can be easily stolen, dropped and broken is just plain foolish.  Also, did you not back up your phone (as you should be doing with any computer) before attempting any operating system update?  As you've now just painfully learned, updates do not always go as planned.
I'm sorry for your data loss, but let this be a very important lesson.  BTW, when was the last time you backed up your computer?  I'm sure you have important data on your computer.  Hard drives WILL fail.

Once in Recovery mode, personal data is invariably lost.
It is recommended that personal data should be backed up often.

  • IPhone 4 in recovery mode after failed update with most recent software (3/25/13), I only have the past 30 days worth of photos and my contacts in iCloud, how do I get the rest of my pictures off of my phone? I have read the apple article already.

Basically headline says it all, my phone is in recovery mode following a failed update through the phone and I want all my photos back.  I have already read the "iOS: Unable to Update or Restore" and it indicates that when restoring through iTunes, you lose all data on the phone. I have checked my iCloud (I am a Windows7 user so uploading does not happen automatically, as I unfortunately just figured out) and it only will upload my past 30 days of photos and contacts, inline with what I've read about the cloud only storing 30 days of your past data. I really would like to get all of my photos off of my phone, I had photostream activated and most were in that stream. Is there anything I can do? I don't know what operating system is on there currently, but I have always updated my phone succesfully until today when this happened, so I'm assuming whatever is most up to date until today is the OS it has. Thank you!

  • IPhone 4S now in recovery mode after minor update os 8.1.3

This morning I updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS8.1.3. The iPad update went fine, but the iPhone update has put my phone into recovery mode (showing a red iTunes logo). I've tried holding down the power button and home button until it reboots, then holding the Home button a further 10 seconds, and any number of other combinations to try to get it out of recovery mode. I've also tried several Apps (most of which seem to be on Windows) to break into my phone and save my data. Alas none of them can get it out of recovery mode. Arrgh !
I was backing up to iCloud for a while, until my limit was reached a couple of months ago. I should have reverted back to backing up on iTunes, but I didn't. Basically didn't think there would be a problem with an Apple update, it's just updating the system software, it shouldn't be touching pictures and other data etc...
Looks like I've got no choice but to wipe my phone and start again. Thanks Apple, excellent job.

    Good day MoonChopper,
It sounds as though you have had an issue updating the iOS version of your iPhone. At this point I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • IPhone 3GS stuck in recovery mode after problems updating to 3.1.3

I just tried updating and somewhere in the process my phone went into recovery mode. It has the little connect to itunes thing on my iphone, and when i plug it in iTunes says it needs to restore. I begin this process, but a minute or two into it an error pops up: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)."
I tried restarting my computer and trying again... nothing, probably tried 6 times or so...
not sure if it makes any difference, but I did recently upgrade to the 3Gs and its only been synced once before...

well that was helpful. I ended up syncing it to another computer and the restore and update worked fine... I'm currently restoring my phone from a backup so hopefully I'll get everything back to the way it was... still not sure why it wouldnt update on my macbook, but at least I've got my phone operational again.
    Thanks!

  • How do I get my Iphone 4 out of recovery mode after an update without restoring it?

I need help trying to get back my iphone to normal. I can't restore it because I didn't back up the video I made 2 days ago and I need it for school. How can I keep everything without restoring it to factory settings or back to what it was when I last backed it up?

If the device is in Recovery Mode, its contents are toast Now, the best you can do to recover a working usable phone is to plug it via USB to the computer running the latest version of iTunes (11.1.2) where you presumably have the last backup you made of it. And Restore from that.

  • IPhone stuck in recovery mode after attempted update.  Will not restore

I attempted to update my iPhone software to the latest, and then proceded to fail.  Now it will not restore, will not power on, and will not hard reset via the sleep/awake button and other.  I've had this phone less than a week and I'm already having issues.

If you are using a Windows based computer to restore the iPhone, it could be the security software or firewall preventing the restore process.

iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
If nothing above helps, definitely return it. It's under warranty.

Help...I did an update without backing up and my phone has now gone into recovery mode. Is there any way to revive it without losing data???
    Please help

If your phone is in recovery mode, you've already lost all data on the phone. You have no choice but to connect it to iTunes and restore it, either from your most recent backup or as a new device.
