i have a few questions about the inetenet functions on the iphone.
i will be buying an iphone 3g in australia on pre-paid. as on pre-paid you have to buy credit so i dont want to be wasting my credit connecting to the internet via edge or 3g.
using 3g and edge to connect to the internet. is this through the phone company and will your phone company charge you?
can you disable your iphone from connecting to the internet via 3g and edge?
can i connect to the internet via my home wireless broardband connection with no cost to my iphone?

The EDGE and 3G speed is provided by the cell phone provider who sold you the iPhone. They are providing a data service. I am not sure what fees there will be till the Cell provider comes out with plans for the iPhone which may or may not contain a Pre-Paid option in the area you live in. The cell phone provide will announce more details on this when they are ready to release that information.
In the USA at&t charges us $20 a month for Unlimited Data usage. Keep in mind this is not Unlimited SMS or unlimited voice. Just unlimited internet usage.

On the First Gen iPhone you could disable EDGE by turning Airport mode on. But this would also stop calls from coming into the iPhone and pretty much could be used for iPod Touch basic features. Anything requiring data use would need to turn EDGE back on or use WiFi

Yes you should be able to connect to WiFi on the iPhone and not be charged for anything as the data is coming from the WiFi network not the Cell Phone Provider network. But again more details will be provided to you when the cell provider in the area you are in releases this information.
Based on the information you provided. I think an iPod Touch might better suite you're needs. And that way you can keep the current cell phone you have now without any worries of data charges etc.
But it is up to you on which one you think will best suite your needs.
