IPhone iOS4 update resulted in crash, require information on restore/backup

Hi Apple Tech Support,
During iPhone update from iOS4 to 4.2.1 (whatever is latest as of 1/02/11) my iPhone crashed and I am now unable to get into my iPhone (iTunes + usb cable logo appearing, iTunes prompting the device requires a restore)
Am I able to access my photos/videos/app data inside my iphone to back up (or is that already included in the back up located at - C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup)
I understand my options now are to plug in my iPhone to iTunes and do a restore then a back up from before the update.
My question is, what exactly is included in the back up (videos/photos/apps/contacts/sms/etc or what is not included, and if not included, is there a way i can extract that data from my crashed iPhone (without of course having to resort to jailbreaking)
Thanks, I await your reply.
p.s. most important data is photos and videos (which i think are located in the C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup - folder just needing renaming

This document tells you what is included in the iPhone backup, as well as how to restore from that backup:

  • IPhone 3Gs - iOS4 update problem, iTunes crashed, iPhone wont update

    Hello!
Yesterday, I finally decided to upgrade my iPhone 3Gs to iOS 4 from 3.1.2 after having returned to my relatives house in europe. However, during the update, I got an error from iTunes (I can't remember what it was, it had a red circle with a white X and say something "unknown" had happened) and iTunes crashed. Then when I tried to update again, iTunes told me that the iPhone was in Recovery mode and had to be restored then updated.
Well, I was pretty mad about this because iPhoto failed to copy some of my videos and photos that I did not want to loose, but I went on with it. Almost immediately, the message "Restoring iPhone Software" came up and the iPhone screen changed and the status bar on my Mac Book went to what looks like 95%. On the iPhone it looks as though its around 60%.
It had been like this for four hours, and I decided to call Apple support through skype since I am not at home in the USA, they told me that it can take up to or even more than 10 (ten!!!!) hours for it to restore!
So I left it on over night, its now been 15 hours and the iPhone is still at 60% and on my Mac Book Pro I still get the message "Restoring iPhone Software" and its still at 95%.
I have a 12 hour flight to the US in a few days, and I would like to know if there is a way to fix this. The phone was running 3.1.2 before I decided to upgrade.

I managed to fix this by connecting the iPhone to another computer, this time a PC using Windows 7 (because the only mac I have is my MacBook Pro late 2009 edition), and the iPhone restore and update worked in less then 5 min.
Also, it looks like the apple rep was mis-informed as the backup DID SAVE my photos and videos!

  • Restore IPhone 5, updated with now crashes, how can I correct this?

I restored my IPhone 5, updated it but now it crashes, how can this be corrected? The update was the IOS.7

Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes Installed on your computer ( v 11.1)
    iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download

  • Half way through an update the phone crashed and now needs restoring. Is there anyway I can restore without losing my data on it?

Half way through updating my software I experienced an error and now advises that I need to restore my iphone. On the front of the screen the itunes symbol showing the charger needs to be plugged in. Is there any way in which I can access my photos and music that is/was on the phone?

In recovery mode, all the data on iPhone is gone.
After recovery you can try restore from backup if there's one.

  • HT4623 What if the update stalls and it requires me to restore my ipad

My ipad did not update and it says I need to restore the settings - What should I do I do not want to lose all of my data

Its telling you to restore the iPad software - not the iPad settings. Did you connect to iTunes and try to restore?
There is no way to get around this issue. If you didn't backup your iPad, then yes you will lose all of your app data and app settings and you will have to start all over again. If you sync with iTunes, you should have some sort of backup and your apps and other content should be in the iTunes library to sync back to the device after you restore. If you have been using iCloud for your backups you can restore from that when the restoring of the software is complete.
But the bottom line is, no matter what you have or haven't done. You must restore the iPad with iTunes now or you will not be able to use it.

  • I am setting up my Iphone 6 but keep getting an error message "cannot restore backup from Icloud...I backed up my old Iphone 5 just yesterday...Any suggestions?

During setup of Iphone 6 I keep getting error message "cannot restore backup" from Icloud.  I backed up my old Iphone 5 yesterday.  Is it because of different operating systems? Please help. Thanks!

Does your iPhone 5 IOS is later than iPhone 6 IOS?
If true, you need to update your iPhone 6 before you can restore from your backup.
If not, is iPhone 6 connected to power supply?

  • Iphone 4s update 8.1 crashed cant restore or reset

So I just tried to update my iPhone to the latest one I think is 8.1 grudgingly. It came up with an error message
saying it cant be completed for no reason that I can work out. I got the error code
3014 and read about the fixes for such code for windows 7 which I have. I followed
the automatic fix, that did nothing, so I did it manually, still did nothing. I've tried
resetting the iphone with the power/menu button, that does nothing, restarting my
PC a few times do, all with 0 success. Any ideas anyone?

Ahh thank you, this worked for me, I used a laptop and it completed the download.
Strangely it still kept coming up with error messaged during the download but I let
it finish, tried it again and it finally went through.

  • Iphone ios4 update-blurry photographs

I just updated my phone today and everything works great, except all my photographs in my library are blurry. Is there a way to remedy this? Many of the photographs are pixilated and are now very poor quality. Is there anything I can do/ does anyone else have the same problem?

Try just syncing your phone, most of the time that will clear the picture quality problem up.

  • People Cannot Hear Me When I make Calls on iPhone 4, Bought a new iPhone 4, uploaded all of my own information from the backup, and it still doesnt work, help!

I went in to apple, they couldnt figure it out, I am on AT&T so I was figuring on going into their store today and seeing if its something with the network, if not I am going back to apple, but this is literally a brand new phone i bought yesterday, not refurbished or anything, brand new, does anyone know why this isnt working? Everything else works fine, the mics both work, its just when I make calls or someone calls me the mic doesnt work.

When you see the same issue on more than one hardware device, it means that the problem is likely to exist outside of the hardware.  Two things to investigate would be the software/firmware on the backup and issues with the cellular network.  It's probably safe to rule out the cellular network as well.
First, make sure that you have imported copies of all the information (pictures, videos, documents) on the device.  Do this thorough itunes, and the applications (photographic and document processing) on your computer.  Perform a firmware update then restore the device as new.  If the problem persists, then you may actually have the worst luck and discovered two devices with an identical issue.
Read each of the steps before initiating the DFU.
!.  Connect the iPhone to any computer running a fully updated version of iTunes.
    2. Press and hold both "home" and "sleep/wake" buttons
    3. After eight seconds let go of only the sleep/wake button.
    4. Keep holding the home button until you see a popup mesage in iTunes.
    5. Read all all the popups, then use iTunes to update the iPhone's software.
If the popup fails to show, repeat steps 2 through 4

  • IPhone 4 update - stuck in recovery mode following unsuccessful restore.

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me with my 'problem'?!
I have recently tried to download the latest available software update for my iPhone 4 and unfortunately my laptop power cable was disconnected before the update had completed. As a result I was unable to switch on my iPhone, so I immediately restarted my laptop and connected my iPhone in order to recommence the update. However, when I connected the device to my laptop I found that my iPhone was no longer recognized by my iTunes and a pop up box stating that: 'iTunes had detected an iPhone in recovery mode' and that the phone 'had to be restored' had appeared.
As I was unable to turn on my iPhone and, by this time, the iPhone was stuck constantly advising me to connect to iTunes, I decided to restore the phone as advised. I clicked the OK button and then the restore button at which point the error message stating the phone could not be updated due to 'unknown error 1604'. After several attempts I managed to get the phone to start and complete the restore process. Upon completion the phone is still not recognized and still stuck constantly telling me to connect to iTunes. I am able to start and complete the restore process again without error 1604 but at the end of the restore the problem persists.
Has anybody had the same or similar issue??
    Any assistance will be appreciated.
    Cheers

Apple recommends to Restore, get Error 1604 leave iPhone connected, Quit iTunes, Restart iTunes, Restore again, fixed. Error 1604 try a different USB port or different computer. Some say Error 1604 is due to bad IPSW file, delete IPSW from computer, and install new file with iTunes or manually.

  • Iphone 5 update failed via iTunes. Needs to restore but keeps getting errors.

    Hi,
Just tried to update my iphone 5 to iOS 6.1 through iTunes in WIndows 7. First time actually, usually I have been updating directly in the phone without any problems.
When iTunes tried to update my phone it got an error, seems it didn't even got to begin updating it. Now iTunes keeps telling me I need to do a restore of the phone to be able to use it. Got the iTunes logo and a USB cabel on the screen.
Anyhow, it seems to work untill it are ready to implement the restore on my phone. The apple logo and the progress bar appears but nothing happens, it just won't move.
After a couple of minutes iTunes drops the connection to the phone and gives me an error code of 1611 and my phone goes back to the restore/recovery screen.
Seems there is a problem with the USB transfer? The weird thing is that I've been synchronizing without any problems earlier. Though when iTunes was about to begin update it installed the Apple Mobile USB drivers again, perhaps that might be the problem?
I have also followed steps in the support area with disabling security programs, reinstalling iTunes etc without any luck.

Problem solved when trying restoring on another computer. Thank god!

  • Hard drive crashed and can't restore backups

I have an older model Macbook (circa 2006).  The original 120GB hard drive crashed, yes I got the dreaded white screen of death, and I replaced with a new 500GB hard drive.  I had backups of all of my data stored to my Time Capsule, but am unable to restore my laptop because the backups were on OS 10.7 and I receive an error message that my OS must be updated.
The install disks that I was able to reboot with after installing the new hard drive are 10.5.8. I found a Snow Leopard disk (10.6.6) but when trying to run an install received a message that it cannot be installed.
How am I supposed to restore my backups and get to the corre?
    This is my current system:
    Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook3,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB31.008E.B02

If the drive fails to appear in Disk Utility then it's most likely died. You can try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The flashing question mark means system files are damaged assuming the drive is OK. In this case just reinstall Snow Leopard. All your user accounts and data will be preserved.

I don't have the choice to restore it as new. It just starts restoring after connecting.

  • IOS4 Update on 3GS New Restore- "iPhone (Name) is in use by another user"

The initial problem I encountered on my 3GS to iOS4 update was I couldn't do ANYTHING that required the network, e.g. Facebook, Safari, certain apps, youtube and more. I was told by an Apple in-store rep to restore AS NEW IPHONE instead of using my backup info, so I did.
It works almost perfectly now. However, I just attempted to make a new playlist and sync it to my iPhone and I am getting the message "iphone (Name of my iPhone) is in use by another user on this computer"
The problem with this is that I am the ONLY user on this computer and have been since I have had it.
My photos will sync through iPhoto but iTunes is no longer recognizing my iPhone's name or the device. I am not sure what caused this, but any help would be awesome.
Since the new update I changed the name of my iphone but I do not see why that would be an issue.

    1. You are thread-jacking. Kangdequan has an open question and adding unrelated questions to that, will not help him at all. Kangdequan, please see below.
    2. There have been countless articles in the last few years explaining why some countries have iTunes music stores and others not. The main reason is something called copyright.
    3. There is an Apple app store in the Philippines.
    4. There are many other sources of music.
Kandequan. It may be that something has become corrupted, but I also see a problem in that the iPhone is only supposed to sync with one computer. Trying to sync with a second one will not work.
There are a number of things you may need to do now, but first decide which computer is to be the one that you sync with: the master, if you will.
Whichever one you decide on, you need to make sure that all files point to that and there is a process written up by a user "wjosten".
You may also need to follow the Apple suggestions for making iTunes recognise your device.
