[iPhone] Is a Mac Mini good enough for iPhone development?

Hello,
I tried to search on this topic, but...not much luck.
Anyway, I am considering getting a Mini as a reasonably priced entry into iPhone development. But I'm concerned, does the Mini have enough horsepower for the task? I'd rather not be limited in terms of what I want to play with (potentially, both "productivity"-type apps, as well as some gaming development). Will a Mini serve me well, or is this a Bad Idea?
Thanks!!

The mac mini is fine, and frankly having a superpowerful machine for development is a mixed blessing because the actual machine is such a dog, that you get careless about speed. But of course your development time is shortened somewhat. THe key to keeping a mac mini happy is to make sure you have enough RAM. 2 GB is needed for all the tools to be running at once. Also you can hot-rod your mac mini with a 7200 RPM drive and really perk it up. Or of course use an external firewire drive.

  • Is a mac mini good enough for editing home video?

I'm considering buying a man mini to do basic video editing. This will be home videos, nothing heavy. Will a mac mini cope with putting an hours and a halfs worth of holiday clips together?

I would say YES. If you are planning of using iMovie, for example.
I was doing my family videos on my "old" iMac 2007, with Corde2Duo. I'm sure it's quite enough on the new plateform.
At least, it's the first price to do it.
I'm waiting a possible new line of Mac Mini, with latest features to get it.

  • Mac Mini - strong enough for design and coding software?

    Hi everyone,
I apologize if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find anything like it in the forums, so hopefully I haven't missed anything.
I'm looking to replace my (old) G5. While I'd love to buy a Mac Pro, I think it might be a little out of my price range. However, I plan to install (and use frequently) the Adobe CS4 suite, with all of its different programs - in addition to using iPhoto and the usual Mac apps.
My question is - can the Mac Mini handle this kind of software (PS, DW, Illustrator, InD) effectively, or is it not powerful enough?
    Advice appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Torie

    littlemissfoggy,
Considering the tremendous upgrades that the Mac Mini has acquired in the past years, if you upgrade the memory to a 4GB channel, then iPhoto would run flawlessly, and as for the Adobe CS4 suite i think that the Mac Mini would handle it, but if your wanting raw power meaning you want everything to go really smoothly, my best bet would be an iMac

  • Is new 2014 mac mini good for audio production

I want to learn how to use logic pro/audio production software. Is the 2014 mac mini powerful enough to run logic pro/audio production software efficiently? any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    +1...
My 'problem' with the current range is that the memory is no longer upgradable.... (What you buy initially is what you get) and i7 Quad Cores are no longer available for the MMs.. just Dual Cores....
This is why earlier MM models via the Apple Refurb store, have been is such short supply because they sell out within an hour or so of becoming available!
You might find this site useful for tracking down Refurbs....
    https://www.refurb.me/us/
Note: Apple refurbs are excellent value for money as they come with the same warranties as new models... plus you can purchase the extended Applecare as you can for new models... but typically sell for 15-45% less. I haven't bought a non-refurbed Mac in several years now... and couldn't be happier with the quality and reliability of the refurbished ones.
Example: In 2012 I bought a 27" 2011 iMac 3.4Ghz 16GB AMD 2GB 1TB plus 3 years of Applecare for 40% less than the then current new cost.... Great deal indeed!

  • Is 2012 mac mini good for audio production?

is 2012 mac mini good for audio production. Take in mind that I am a novice, but that really does not matter, I want to get the right product if that is an imac instead than so be it.

It depends on the sort of audio production you'll be doing. If you're going to be working with only stereo content or just a few tracks, in GarageBand for instance, a 2012 Mac mini would probably suffice, though you'll probably want to max out the RAM in the system. If you're going to be working with many tracks simultaneously with effects, EQ, etc on many, for instance with Logic Pro X with a number of plugins going, then a Mac mini probably won't do the job. In that case you'd probably want a top-end iMac or perhaps even a Mac Pro (the new model of which should be released sometime this month).
I'd suggest that you decide on the software you'll want to run, and then ask in forums related to that software what sort of system configuration users are finding to be adequate.

  • Will specs on an iMac 24in 2.8ghz be good enough for video prod-Mac Newbie?

Hi guys, I do pretty high end editing in Sony Vegas but wanted to move to Final Cut Pro and Mac workflow. I've been a life time windows user and have been thinking about taking the plunge for about a year now.
I finally just purchased an iMac 24inch. The related specs are the standard 2.8 ghz, 2 GB ram, and ATI radeon 256 mb. It's still in the box. On my way home I kept wondering about the specs especially since I'm new to Mac. On a windows, those specs might not be that great. Will this be good enough for workflow in FCP. I'm going to upgrade the memory in the near future.
I was concerned about the graphics card? Will I see slowness or stuttering while editing with a lot of footage, rendering, etc. Thanks so much! I want to take it out of the box so bad!

It'll be fine for DV and HDV...footage imported from tapeless systems like P2 or XDCAM EX.
The graphics card doesn't come into play much with editing...only certain filters really use the GFX card...otherwise it is not important.
It is limiting in that you are only able to use Firewire drives, and since the computer only has one firewire bus, you might run into issues capturing this footage from firewire cameras...the drive and the camera will be using one firewire bus. But I haven't had too many issues with that...daisy chaining works for most of us.

  • Mac Mini vs G5 for Sims2?

My wife plays Sims2 all the time. She is currently using a G5 2Gig Ram and 250gig HD. It is starting to slow down and I think it is time for a new machine. She has an Apple 20" monitor.
I was wondering, would a Mac Mini be enough machine for Sims2? I am worried about the limited graphics of the Mini mostly. I could get an iMac and sell everthing, but I don't think she will like the glossy display. I wish Apple made a turbo Mini for times like these.
    Kevin

The most likely causes of the G5 slowing down are:
    1) the hard drive is too full -- try to keep at least 10% of the drive as free space, preferably more (click on Macintosh HD icon once, then File > Get Info, to see how much space is "available" (ie free))
    2) you need to do some "housekeeping": try a system maintenance program like Yasu:

  • What is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

I currently have a 2011 Mac Mini Server. When using FCP X, what is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?
    Thanks people,

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • Will 13 in Macbook Pro with Retina 2.6 ghz be good enough for engineering student

I'm purchasing a new macbook and not really sure which one to get. I have been thinking about getting the 13 in 2.6 ghz Macbook Pro with Retina, but will that be good enough for engineering programs such as AutoCad?

I agree that it would be slow, but the biggest limitation is RAM. 4GB simply won't,  er, cut it.
A similar mac with at least 8GB, and a fast external drive, would work, even if not very speedy.
It really comes up to time, as babylonslim said.
If you need to cut very quickly, you need a machine like he described. On the other hand, I have no doubt that my very own, very old 2010 17" MBP could do the job - it has 8GB, and I use an external drive connected through e-SATA. The GPU is not nearly as fast as present day ones, and it only has a  dual core i7 GPU. It would take longer, but it would work.

  • Is Pages Good Enough For Professional Printing?

I'm looking to do an Large Format Brochure (11" x 17") single fold and I've been using Pages for the mock up and layout. I was thinking that I would need someone to recreate the design in Quark, or Pagemaker, but now I'm wondering if I can do it all in Pages.
The printer that I plan on using is PSPrint (http://www.psprint.com/) and according to their offset printing specs and template, I just have to provide them with a 300dpi PDF. From what I've tested, exporting to PDF with quality set at "Best" I get a 300dpi file.
I haven't tested my output with photographs yet since we haven't purchased the final images and are using comps, but am I wrong in thinking that Pages is good enough for this project?
    Template: http://www.psprint.com/DOWNLOAD/templates/brochures/brochurehalffold_11x17front.pdf
    Thanks in advance!

There is no way to save out of Pages to pdf without flattening the transparency.
Proposition: In any save path, transparency is flattened in saving.
Test of proposition: Apple Pages '08 and Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 as platform.
    1. Launch system software and application software.
    2. Insert first composition frame, select Apple Hoefler antiqua at 24 US pt, enter 'Type', leave default colour, leave default opacity.
    3. Insert second composition frame, select Apple Hoefler antiqua at 24 US pt, enter 'Transparency', change default colour to rubrication red, change opacity to 50%.
    4. Select e.g. File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF, name file 'Test', and select folder.
    5. Launch Acrobat Professional 6 (first version with ISO 15930 PDF/X-3 verification), check the PDF version (: 1.4), check at high magnification (: no rasterisation), check that the source character string can be synthesised (: it can).
As posted previously, if transparency is applied, PDF 1.4 is automatically configured unless the path is ISO 15930 PDF/X-3 that does not support transparency (PDF 1.3 has an opaque imaging model, not a transparency imaging model). This is a simplistic test, but it is nonetheless a test.
Because Apple Quartz has applied transparency since 2000, and because there the matrix of system versions and application versions is somewhat monstrous, the notion of testing is somewhat notional .

  • Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?

Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do that without any problem, always that the total amount of memory is less than the maximum memory your Mac mini supports. A Late 2012 Mac mini supports 16 GB of memory, and you can find in this site the steps to install more memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4432?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1

  • What cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks

  • Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to...

use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware, i.e. powerbook, ibook, imac, ect. But seems to me eMac and the G4 mini are very similar. Possible?
    thanks

" Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? "
    No.
"I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware"
And so are the eMac's upgrade discs.

Thanks John, but I've already read that page. I have just a simple question about the performance of "4 core" and "6core" if anyone had already tried both of them.
