IPhone is blank, not turning off, behaving oddly

I cannot restart or turn off my phone which at present has a either a white screen, or totally black when the top button is pushed. Jointly pushing the top and home buttons do nothing either, even when held for the ten + seconds recommended in the troubleshooting guide. Any thoughts?

Hey Mark1863,
Thanks for the question. What troubleshooting steps have you attempted so far? If you have not yet already done so, I'd recommend power cycling your device:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If your issue persists, let’s backup and restore your device:
Choosing an iOS backup method (Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iOS device?)

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

Thanks,

  • My iphone 4 will not turn off... how can I fix this?

I went to turn off my iphone 4 and it will not turn off... it is just stuck on the circle thing it does when shutting down????  What's wrong with it?

Try holding down both the top and home buttons a the same time until it restarts- that probably would do it.

  • LED in iphone 4 is not turning off. HELP!! :(((

I drop my phone more or less 3 times and my LED light is now malfunctioning, it can't be turned off, i have not downloaded any flashlight applications, one of the Apple expert told me to restore my iPhone, but it still goes the same thing. I wanna know if there's an alternative way to turn off my LED light. My phone hasn't been jailbroken and it is already out of warranty. Thank you!
Please do help me! Thank you very muuuuch!!

Consider the possibility that you have broken the phone by dropping it "more or less 3 times". You can get an out of warranty replacement for a (reasonable) fraction of the retail price from Apple.

  • IPhone 4S will not turn off

Last week I noticed that my iPhone suddenly started losing battery rather quickly--it would only last about 3 hours on a full charge. In addition, the speakers stopped working--they would not play any music or video content, even though the ringer continues to work. To reset the phone, I tried to turn it off. The spinning wheel that appears while the phone shuts down was very dim but the phone eventually shut off. About two seconds after the phone turned off, the Apple logo appeared and it turned itself back on. No matter how many times I tried to turn it off, it continued to turn itself back on.
Eventually, I let the phone run the battery all the way down. After remaining at 1% for about 5 minutes, the phone shut itself off. Once I plugged it back in and charged it, the problem continued to occur.
Thinking that this was a problem with iOS 6, I upgraded to iOS 7, hoping that would fix the problem. After the upgrade, the same problem continued to occur.
I then tried to restore the phone using a backup stored on my computer. When I did that, the phone completely stopped working. It refused to activate and would not get a carrier signal--no phone, no text messaging, just WiFi.
At a loss, I then did a factory restore. After completing that, the phone finally got a carrier signal again and, in addition, the speakers began functioning again. The spinning wheel that appears when the phone turns off is full brightness now, but the phone still will not stay off and the battery still drains very quickly. Using System Activity Monitor to examine the phone is unhelpful. When fully charged it says that the phone should have 10 hours of battery life remaining, but within an hour that number has dropped to 6 hours, and within another hour or two, the battery is completely drained. CPU Core usage generally hovers in the mid to high single digits. Mail is set to fetch manually and no applications are running.
Is there a way to fix this, or is it just Apple's built-in way of requiring an upgrade every 18 months?

Did you have the battery changed recently?

  • IPhone 4 will not turn off

My iPhone 4 will no longer turn off.  I hold down the button on the top right of the iPhone and get the red slider to turn the iPhone off.  I slide it to the right, but instead of turning off my iPhone reboots (restarts).  I tried restoring the software/firmware and reloading using iTunes, but this did not solve the problem.  Does anyone have any ideas?

You may have an app running.
    Try force quitting.
Force quit an app: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the app quits.  You can also force an app to quit by removing it from the recents list.
See “Opening and Switching Apps” on page 29.

  • Iphone 4s is not turning off

I went to the genius bar today to get my iphone 4s checked out.
Last week it started to be pretty heavy on the battery usage and after turning it off it was rebooting itsself.
So the guy at the apple store was checking out all my phone data, saying that the heavy loss of battery life was caused by some unknown software bug.
After setting it completely back to its factory standardt settings nothing changed at all. thanks!
As it is over a year old, there is no warranty left so he offered me a exchange phone for 200 euros. are you guys at apple kidding me?
As all the problems i have are resulting from a sonftware bug i am wondering whos fault it is? it is not jailbroken or anything.
How can a company like apple sell a phone for 700$ that is breaking  just after a little more than a year of usage?
by the way, my 4 month old retina macbook pro which already got a exchange screen got some dead pixels now.
no more apple products, thats for sure.

  • Iphone 5 will not turn off + lock button doesn't always work

Has anyone seen this problem my iPhone 5 will not always lock or be able to turn off .
It eventually turns off then after reboot works fine for a while then starts to play up again

Have you tried resetting the iPhone?
To do that - Press and hold the Home button and the Wake / Sleep button at the same time. Keep them both pressed until the Apple logo appears on the screen, it can take over 10 seconds for this to happen.
If that does not work then try restoring the software in the iPhone in iTunes.
If that does not work then take the iPhone to Apple as it may have a hardware fault.

  • Iphone light will not turn off

the light on my iphone 4s turned on and will not tirn off. I tried resetting, turning flash on and off in camera mode to no avail.

Did a restart to factory settings, still on.
Most likely a hardware issue.  See More Like This for related threads... -->

  • Iphone 3G: does not turn off - no stand by modus

    I have a jailbreaked iphone 3g.
The iphone cannot be turned off. If I press the power/standby switch nothing happens.
If I turn off the phone through SBsettings at first it seems it is turned off, but after a few seconds the apple logo appears and doesn't disapear anymore - a few seconds you see a black screen and then in a few seconds black screen with the apple logo. This goes on and on and on...until the battery is empty.
When it is connected to electricity the same thing happens - with the exception that it goes to the mode in which the "turn-off" bar appears. But if I want to turn it off the same circle starts.
I am guessing that the whole problem could have something to do with apps I installed through cydia...?
    Any ideas?

No support for jailbroken devices can be given here.
