IPhone is not cataloguing music correctly under Artists

I'm using an iPhone 4 connecting to a new Mac running Lion. My iTunes on my computer catalogues my music correctly by artist, but when I sync to my phone, some (but NOT all) of my music doesn't show up under the "Artists" section in the "Music" app on my phone. The music IS THERE--If I go to to the "Albums" section or the "Songs" section it shows up by album/song but the artist is not listed underneath it.
Here's an example:
I have many concerts/"albums" of the Grateful Dead that I've downloaded for free over many years. Some of these DO show up in the Artists as follows:
Grateful Dead>Fillmore West>2-11-1970
But others will NOT show up under the Artists section. They only show up in Albums.
So in other words, I can't find these concerts/albums if I try to search by Artist because THEY AREN'T LISTED, even though they are in the phone!
The other thing I've noticed is that if I look in Albums, these particular ones will show up as follows:
Boston Garden 9-25-1991
but the words "Grateful Dead" don't appear below the name of the concert/album as they should.
The ones that show up correctly under Artists have the words "Grateful Dead" under them when I view them in Albums. So there is something about the coding that is incorrect which prevents these particular albums to have the words Grateful Dead, and therefore they aren't listed when I look in Artists.
I have tried in iTunes to group by compiliation, create gapless albums, etc. and even retyped the name and artist name of each of the ones I'm having trouble with. But nothing seems to work. The Apple Store suggested I wipe out my phone and reinstall from my back up but that seems a bit extreme.
I CAN search my music via the Albums section and just bypass the whole "Artists" section altogether but I feel like there should be a solution to this. I know this is a very particular, detailed problem but would appreciate any help you can offer!
Thank you!

I'm also having this issue - I'm getting about 27GB of garbage data put into the iPhone's 'other' category
iPhone 5 64GB
iTunes 11.4
MBP 10.8.5
iTunes is set to 'convert larger songs to 128k AAC', and it's trying to sync a 9,500 song library which is a mixture of aiff, wav, mp3, m4p and a couple of m4v.
Previously these all fit on my iPhone a treat. Left iTunes last night after already having transferred around 7000 of them - iTunes informed me i'd have nearly 10GB space remaining. Came back this morning and iTunes shows my phone is now 15GB over capacity. It shows all the library has synced though - no greyed out songs.
When I go to the phone, that says it has 7GB space remaining and only 1700 songs synced. in the music app itself, there's very few songs in there. Looking in Settings>General>Usage, there's no visibility of where that 27GB is being used up. Music category is only 11GB (which should be more like 38GB).
Please help I've wiped and resynced my phone 3 times now, it's driving me mental: I just want to listen to music. I've never had this issue with Android's drag n drop.

  • Why does the iphone 5 not sync the correct artwork to songs.

Why does the iphone 5 not sync the correct artwork to songs. All the artwork is correct in the itunes 11 library, but when sync'd the iphone arbittary chooses what it wants

My guess is you are using iTunes Match.
iTunes Match is a great feature, but I suggest keeping it on only on your computer.  Turn iTunes Match off on your iPhone at Settings > Music > iTunes Match.  Then sync your iPhone and you should get all the artwork.  You may have to sync two or three times to get it all after turning off iTunes Match.

  • My iPhone will not play music, and says it's connected to a dock when it's not. Help?

My iPhone will not play music. Whenever I try to play music through the speakers on my iPhone it won't let me adjust the volume (like it's connected to a dock) and when I do connect it to a dock, the music plays through the iPhone speakers. Also I've tried just listening to my music through earphones and it plays for around 6 seconds then it goes back to like it's connected to a dock. Help? I've tried turning it off and on, restarting it and even restoring it and nothing's worked.

It says this when not connected to the dock. His dock is an ihome which isn't an official Apple dock. I think my next step is to take the thing in to an Apple store.

  • Iphone not sorting music correctly.

I can find the song title by searching songs and it has the right artist, but cant find under artist.  It is also merging albums with same name too. "Greatest Hits"  When I look at the playlist in itunes on my Mac it all looks right and sorts by the artist correctly.  Any help?

  • Still shows deleted files; also,  not showing new listings under "artists".

I deleted some lectures from my ipod, and deleted the playlist that contained them, but when I sync my ipod, the deleted playlist shows, containing one of the 70 files that it used to contain.
2nd problem...I added a bunch of music from some cd's, they synced ok, showing the artist, the album, etc. However, when I look for the artist on my ipod, it doesn't show.
Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?

*I added a bunch of music from some cd's, they synced ok, showing the artist, the album, etc. However, when I look for the artist on my ipod, it doesn't show.*
There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances (for instance I read somewhere that if you have at least two tracks with different album names the rest will appear), however the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod
Also if the tracks are incorrectly ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Setting "Compilations" on your iPod main menu prevents you getting lots of single artist entries when you load an album by various artists.

  • IPhone will not sync music, movies etc since upgrading to Mavericks...

Upgrade to Mavericks on Tuesday.  I also upgraded to iTunes 11.1.2 and iOS 7 7.0.3.  Since this time iTunes will not sync my music movies or TV shows to my iPhone five. I have tried everything  can't find a solution. Is anyone else having this issue?

Well...last night, I thought I had it all figured out. I had several successful syncs after I used the method in my post above. Even when making changes to playlists, everything synched successfully every time.
Tonight, however, it's back to the same crap. Hanging on "Waiting for changes..." and no changes being made. Sometimes iTunes crashes in the process.
The only thing that seems to complete correctly is the backup, as it logs it correctly under "Latest Backup"...but ****, who knows if THAT'S even working right.
Really frustrated, Apple. And yes...I've sent detailed iTunes feedback here and via the error box that pops up when iTunes crashes.

  • Itunes icon on iphone is not displaying music button???plz help

i m using iphone 4 and i dont ve much knowledge about it..earlier the itunes icon on iphone had music icon but now a days its missing...plzzz help me out??

I just read that your iPhone is new, so no apps in your iTunes library have been transferred to your iPhone yet.
Under iTunes Applications Tab: the Sync Applications:is checked as well as all applications.THIS IS STILL NOT SYNCING AND THE TOP BOX WAS ALREADY CHECKED, IS THIS BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER ALREADY SYNCED ON HER iPHONE?
Not sure why you are typing in all caps with this, which on the internet means you are yelling or shouting, and I don't respond well to anyone who yells or shouts at me - not when I'm trying to help.
Your daughter transferring the apps in your iTunes library to her iPhone should not have any affect on this. There is no device limit for the number of iPods and/or iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
Were all apps that are currently in your iTunes library purchased with the same iTunes account - with your iTunes account?

  • IPad 1 upgraded to iOS5 suddenly not playing music correctly

Hey all - I'm noticing (all of a sudden) that my iPad's Music app is not playing my music correctly. An example: in shuffle mode, if I manually advance to the next track, the app tells me it's playing, but the counter is not advancing, and there is no sound coming out of the headphones. All subsequent advances get the same result - I doubt my entire music library is corrupted, especially since if I exit out, and then manually select the track that wasn't playing in shuffle mode, it plays!
If I quit the app and restart, then let the app shuffle without manually advancing, it starts fine, but approximately 2-3 songs in, it lists one track as playing, while it is playing something else entirely.
If I pick individual songs from the song list (not in shuffle mode at all), some play, some don't. I get the same thing - the app says it's playing, but it's not.
    Any advice? Hard reset maybe?

Who do you think you're addressing here? Apple won't read this.
I have an Android Phone that has given me no amount of grief at all in the 2 years I have owned it.
I guess miracles DO happen !!
If you are not going to make your next tablet an iPad, I would strongly advise that you not get an Android device, but pursue another option such as Windows mobile.

  • IPhone does not sync music

Currently my iTunes does not sync music to my iphone. It does effectively sync apps etc, but when i attempt to update my music it fails to do so. How do I fix this?
    Regards.

See if you've selected "Manually manage music and videos". If that's selected, even though you sync, only photos will be synced.

  • IPhone 4s not syncing music

My iPhone 4s is not syncing music. I have had it a while and it has almost 4 gb of data left. I am running ios 6.0.1 and I added new music yesterday. It is also weirdly adding and taking out data at the sync.

Connect your iPhone 4S to your computer, click on your iPhone in the Sidebar in iTunes, then click on "Music" and select the music you want to sync.

I am trying to change the music that is on my iPhone by hooking it up to my computer and downloading.  The iPhone will not accept the playlists I have tried to download and I do not know why.

  • Only a fraction of my music appears under 'artist'

As the title says, I have probably 200 or so artists on all the music that I have saved to playlists over time, however when I go to my music then click artist there are probably only 15 artists there and all the rest are missing? It appears to be completely random so even when I have an album by various artists only one of them is there when I look in the artists view.
Thanks in advance for any help, the artist view to me is the best way to look through my music and it's so frustrating to not be able to find all that I have saved!

  • ITunes not organizing music correctly

I was importing a CD to iTunes, and it seems that the music is not grouped together by album. However, the choice "albums" is chosen in my iTunes menu. Below is a picture of what I exactly mean, with the album Sweeney Todd.
The several Sweeney Todd's are supposed to be in the same album, but it seems like there's something wrong. This has also occurred with another album as well. What should I do to organize this correctly?
    Thanks!
As a note, my iTunes has the newest update.

Fill in the Album Artist (Sweeney Todd) for all those songs.
