IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes 9, but my iPod mini syncs fine

Uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled iTunes (multiple times), put iPhone in recovery and DFU modes, and nothing. Windows only recognizes it, and when I put my iPhone in recovery mode, it was "installing the device software", but later failed saying "the file specified could not be found". Apple Support was of no help. Any suggestions?

I've gone through the steps of that article already. I'm all set with the USB port and the cable. It's been recognized perfectly on my computer before, I just connected it a few days before I updated iTunes. The software on my iPhone is fairly recent too (3.0.1). My iPod mini is several years old and is still being recognized by iTunes. The Apple Mobile Device service is running and I've restarted it several times. I have McAfee VirusScan 8.5 and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware.
Is the iPhone recognized correctly on another computer?
Since the issue didn't occur until you updated iTunes, you may want to look at the security software on your PC.
You can try restoring McAfee to defaults, as suggested in this application conflict article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1609
You may be able to bypass some conflicts by putting the PC into a selective startup mode, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292

  • IPhone is not recognized by iTunes.  would like to backup/sync.  itunes is older version, using OSX.  itunes recognizes pics but not the device.  I am unable to DL the latest iTunes

Here is the deal, i have not been a good mac owner in the sense that i probably havent had proper updates throughout the years.  Hence, my itunes is out of date and my iphone doesnt get recognized by itunes (poor fella).  but the strange thing is that my other iphones were recognized.
Here is the kicker, my cloud has a backup on my iphone and my ipad recognized on the iPhone device taking up 587.2 mb.  IF i delete the ipad will it remove contacts and wreak havoc.

Your other phones were probably old enough that they worked with the version of iTunes you have. When you buy a device it requires the version of iTunes current at the time of purchase.  A new phone will require a new iTunes which won't run on your Powerbook.
I didn't think iCloud backed up to a device, the device backs up to iCloud.  Are you sure you aren't simply seeing backups in the Cloud and not something actually on your phone?

  • 5th gen ipod not recognized by windows, but old ipod min works fine.

my new ipod is not recognized by windows at all. my old ipod mini works fine. i even uninstalled everything and tried reinstalling the new ipod. after that didnt work, i plugged in my mini, and it reinstalled perfectly.
I also plugged my new 5th gen into another computer with itunes and it recognized it perfectly.
is there some sort of software conflict between the mini and other ipods? this is driving me insane.

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes

I can't sync my iPhone but my iPod does. Furthermore, all services, physical connections appear to be running/operable. iTunes diagnostic test even showed every possible service I could think of working but returned a sync test result of "no ipod, iphone or iPad found", yet the phone charges, and I can download my pix via any appropriate app on the computer.
iTunes diagnostic results also allowed the list to be saved which I haven't posted due to its length and because it showed nothing was at fault or not running, et cet.
I've reinstalled iTunes, used different USB connections, rebooted the computer, rebooted the iPhone to no avail. It really appears to be w/in the iTunes s/w because everything up to that point is fine.

Installing a software or a software update cannot "fry" a hard drive, so this was a coincidence. As an example, installing an OS update can bring an underlying/unknown problem to the surface but isn't the cause of a resulting problem after the install.
Per a post you made on September 26, 2009, your hard drive had failed at that time.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10300424#10300424
The new hard drive installed last September - less than a year ago has failed after installing the current iTunes version? If so and you've had two complete hard drive failures in less that a year, this has nothing to do with the iTunes version installed and being used.
If no change after re-installing the current iTunes version over the existing without deleting iTunes first, try deleting iTunes first before doing so.

  • IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes after carrier update.

AT&T just had some kind of carrier update on my phone which I clicked on the phone to do, no problems. Now my phone doesn't get recognized by iTunes and I've had to restore the phone just for it to turn on anymore. I hope it's nothing major, I've only dropped the phone a couple of times, but my last phone I dropped a lot and that always worked.

    Is there a current issue?
Dropping a phone is never good and can result in anything from no issues to damaged beyond repair.
If you are clumsy, put the device in a case designed to protect it.

  • I'm missing the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.. iPhone isn't recognized in iTunes?

I have tried re-installing itunes, restarting computer/ phone, disabling security software, different USB cords, etc.. I followed a page on apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538) and concluded I am missing the driver but none of the suggestions have fixed the problem.

  • IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes; won't charge via USB

I recently switched a friend to Mac/iPhone and things haven't been very smooth, unfortunately. His MacBook video card appears to be faulty (the screen appears to "breath") and now his iPhone has stopped connecting to the Mac. I'd say that Apple's hardware quality control has really tanked in recent years. I also bought a MacBook and am having video card problems too. Very disappointing for a life-long customer (25 years and counting!). Anyway, back to the iPhone...
My friend's first problem with the iPhone involved the "device not compatible" warning. It just started to appear randomly, despite the fact that nothing was connected to the phone's dock connector. Sometimes it would appear every few minutes. Then he'd go a day without seeing it. Now it has stopped appearing altogether. I urged him to do a restore on the phone, so he connected it to his MacBook and...nothing. The iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes, nor will it charge with the USB cable. It will, however, charge with an iPod FireWire adapter.
Needless to say, he's frustrated, not to mention very disappointed with the hardware quality. Two lemons. Not good.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with the iPhone??? Unfortunately our local Apple Store is closed until Wednesday for remodeling! Ugh.
    Thanks much!!!
FYI, my friend's MacBook Pro is running 10.4.10 with all recent software updates and patches applied.

Have you tried to reset the iphone, holding the sleep and home button together for 10 seconds?
Also, a firewire cable only charges the iphone. You will need a usb cable to sync - the usb cable does not allow for charging I think.
When opening the preference window in itunes, there should be a Sync icon, all the way to the right, when clicking on that Sync icon - I think it is the iphone icon - does the name of the iphone appear in the window?

  • ITunes 7.1 broke iPod mini syncing

All worked fine until the 7.1 update. Now every time I connect my iPod mini (6G, through firewire), about a third of songs and audiobooks is re-downloaded onto the iPod. This is absolutely uncalled for, as those files were not changed.
Worse yet, now the iTunes syncs audiobooks one way only, meaning that the bookmarks for audiobooks listened on the iPod are lost upon syncing with iTunes. Unless I am doing something wrong, this seems like a serious bug.
Does anybody else have the same problem and maybe found a solution? Or ss there a way to revert to the previous iTunes update?
    Thanks

From what I've seen, there's no reason to "copy" the artist field into the sort artist field... If you leave the sort artist field blank, it appears to sort by the artist field. So you only need to set the "sort artist" field for any items that you want sorted differently from the artist field.
I'm going to wait a few days, because I suspect very strongly that some very useful Apple scripts will show up at, for example, this site:
    http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/
The one I want is a script to take all of the songs I've selected and set the 'sort artist' to be the artist name in "last name, first name" order. So then I just select all of the songs that are by a single artist, run the script, and probably 98% of my desired sorting changes will be made. I see some of the first scripts for manipulating sort tags are showing up, and I bet it won't be long before some really useful ones appear there.

  • IPhone isn't recognized by iTunes, and when it is, data speeds are slow!

    Hey all,
For the last few months I have been having an issue with the drivers on my computer for Apple iPhone. Before, it would connect to iTunes just fine, and would work flawlessly. Now either it connects to iTunes and it being recognized by Windows Explorer as a camera doesn't show up, or Windows Explorer picks it up as a camera, but it doesn't communicate with iTunes. I have noticed that when the PC picks the phone up as a camera, "MTP Device" shows up under "Portable Devices" in Device Manager. When iTunes can pick the phone up, it shows up under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" as "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".
I have tried various tricks with driver installing/uninstalling. If I want my computer to connet to iTunes, I need to uninstall and reinstall the driver with my iPhone connected, or it doesn't work at all. It appears as a hardware error and driver error before I uninstall the driver. Deleting the driver software does nothing. When I do this trick, the transfer speeds between my iPhone are slow. An example is, it takes 5 hours to synchronize 161 songs to the iPhone. If I can manage to get the iPhone to show up as a device under the USB controllers, transfer speeds between the computer and phone are normal. Changing the USB cable and chosing a different port doesn't help. A complete restore of iOS software revealed no results. I just started with a clean OS install a half a year ago, I am not looking forward to wiping my OS to fix this... any help on fixing this? Thanks.
