IPhone / iTunes erasing 500 pictures by accident?

Hi Forum...
Last night I had an iPhone user call me at our support hotline.
He had just returned from Christmas vacationing i London (we are located in Denmark), and he had brought his brand new iPhone3Gs with him on the trip.
He had recieved his iPhone on the 22nd, and left for vacation on the 23rd. Before that, he had sync'ed the iPhone with iTunes and everything was OK.
He then comes home on the 29th and hooks his iPhone up to his computer (Windows Vista) and iTunes goes into what the customer thinks is sync-mode, and starts to count down from 7:00 mins.
When this is done, he discovers that the 400+ photos he took during his vacation is gone from his iPhone???
He then takes a look at iTunes to see if there is a backup, and there is - one before he left, and one from a few minutes ago... he then tries to sync once more to get the photos onto the iPhone again, but with no luck - the pictures are completly gone!!!
I asked him if he had hit some restore-button or anything, and his answer is, that he did nothing but hook up the iPhone to the computer, and iTunes started to sync... or what he THOUGHT was started to sync.
So... now we have a very angry / sad guy who has lost one of the most impportant things in life, so what do we do? I have checked everything with him, and tod him NOT to do any further investigating or try anything on his iPhone until I have brought this to your attention to see if there was some kind of solution.
I simply cannot imagine that these pictures are completly gone... they must be somwhere - but where? The status on the iPhone is, that everything - all photos and so on up to the vacation point is there - ONLY stuff from during the vacation is gone...
can anyone be of some kind of assistance?
Please remember that I have to be able to resolve this over the phone, so please keep your answers to something I might be able to forward to this customer, if there is no option to help him over the phone.
Also please remember that the guy is on Windows Vista, not Mac - unfortunately.

If he synced his iPhone with iTunes while all photos were available in the iPhone's Camera Roll and hasn't synced his iPhone again since the photos turned up missing in the Camera Roll, he can try restoring his iPhone with iTunes from his iPhone's backup. Do not sync the iPhone again before doing so and decline the prompt to update the iPhone's backup after selecting Restore.
To each his/her own, but the first thing I do with my iPhone after I captured a number of photos is import the photos with iPhoto - before syncing, which is what I do with any digital camera when retuning to my computer, but it shouldn't make any difference when syncing the iPhone with iTunes first since photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are not touched with the iTunes sync process.

Other from the obove Itunes works fine and does sync pictures from my computer to my Iphone from "my pictures" folder.

The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.

Wow you're kind of a iTunes bully. Dude the reason I am asking for advice and help is I am completely computer ********. If I knew the answer I wouldn't be asking. Anyways. Question to anyone else.
If I have no music on my iTunes at all and no music on my computer, hard drive or any other version of storage yet there is a playlist on my iPhone. While my iPhone is plugged into my PC and my iTunes is up, is there a way to swap my playlist from my iPhone to my iTunes? Directly? Without downloading some new media source or backing up my old media source from my history. The reason everything was deleted (iTunes and media source) was due to the size of everything and space it was requiring. I am simply trying to get 233 songs from A to B.
I have tried magic but it is not working.

If you don't want to do this, then you will have to live with those sync pics on yoru phone.

You would need to check if you made a back up of the iPhone on iTunes/iCloud before you restored from the ipod touch back up. If there isnt then im sorry that data is gone.

You need to copy the iTunes liubrary from your Old computer, or its Backup, to your New computer...

From your Old Computer... Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

Im sorry to hear that. You need to restore like brad said.
But you can restore from a latest backup from itunes after restore. I hope you had a recent backup made.

Do you get any specific error messages? Double-check the following:
On the summary tab of your iTunes sync settings you have checked "Sync only checked songs and videos"
In your music library you have checked all the songs you want to sync to your phone
There are no exclamation points next to any of the songs you want to sync to your phone
You have authorized your computer for all Apple IDs for any purchased music you want to sync to your phone (in Store>Authorize this computer)
You have checked "Sync Music" on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings
When everything looks correct, sync your phone.

I've had my iphone for a while and am just now connecting it to itunes to load music. I've got SMS, apps and photos on it already. When I connect to iTunes, it asks if I want to set up as new or restore from backuo (no backups).
If I set it up as new will iTunes erase the apps, SMS, and photos?

I'm sorry you think it's a silly question. I did read the guide and it doesn't say how to set it up as a new device without deleting everything. Next time you find a "silly" question maybe you can just move on so it doesn't offend you instead of judging without helping.

Thanks for your advice and links, unfortunately nothing seems to answer my question.
Here's my situation:
1) Bought a new iPhone from Verizon last month
2) The iphone activated without me having to connect to iTunes
3) In the interim, I took photos, downloaded apps, texted friends, etc
4) I wanted to load music, so I plugged it into iTunes
5) iTunes wants me to set up as a new phone or restore from backup, but the only backup file is from an iPod I have
6) iTunes doesn't give me the choice of backing up my iPhone (when I right-click on the device all I get is "eject" and "restore from backup")
I also tried checking "Prevent iPads, iPhones, and iPods from syncing automatically" in iTunes
I just want to put music on my phone but can't seem to get past iTunes wanting to set it up and I'm afraid it'll delete everything if I do.

iTunes 10.6.3.25

All of the photos and videos should have been imported to the computer as you would with digital camera photos/videos. In that case, they would be backed up to the computer and you could resync them if you wanted to. The camera roll is not intended to be a storage location since any problem with the phone could cause you to have to restore the phone and doing so risks you losing the photos as you have seen. If the phone was backed up while these photos were on it, you should be able to restore to that backup, however you would lose anything you have added since then.
