IPhone/iTunes - red square in red circle

I imported a cd to itunes, but 3 out of 12 songs have a red square in red circle by the song time/duration and will not play?

I'm having the same issue with seemingly random songs. The quickest way I found to solve it is to tether my phone to my cmputer and manually drop and drag the songs to my phone. I easily spent at least twice as much time trying to find a faster way than actually dragging the songs, which I initially balked at doing because I thought it would take forever.

  • I upgraded my iPhone5s to iOS8 Most of my iTunes songs wont play I get a red square in a circle

I upgraded my iPhone5s to iOS8 Most of my iTunes songs wont play I get a red square in a circle on the right side. This is maddening!!

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.
I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.
I decided to do a complete reset/restore of my 4th gen iPod Touch, Bad move! I've been messing with it for hours, and it simply won't restore--it keeps hanging on a black screen with an Apple logo and a progress bar at about 10%, sometimes it goes completely blank and tries again, with the same result. (I've posted my question/plea for help here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19735862 )
I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.
I thought that once I started using iCloud, I didn't need to sync with iTunes anymore--guess I was wrong.

  • HT1535 why are songs coming up with a red square with a circle around it on my i phone

Why are songs on my iphone not playing and have a red square with a circle around it

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
    Go to 'Settings'
    'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync!

  • Songs won't play :(  ...Red Square in Red Circle?

I just bought 9 songs from Amazon music download and added them to my itunes library.  I've done this before and my previous Amazon purchased music has always and still plays fine. After syncing my new music with my iphone I found I couldn't play these 9 songs (they play fine on my Mac in itunes, just not on my phone).  They have the red square in red circle symbol next to them (see screen shot) and when I tap on one to play it just skips to the next song without the red square in red circle.
When searching to see if this question was posted before I did find 3 Posts, BUT the oldest was Nov. 2013, and none had an answer?
    Can anyone help?
    Much thanks in advance, Michele

This is problem that keeps coming back. I had Apple Staff take control of my PC and resolve it, but when I went to add more I lost the first lot. They have messed up with the last update and won't admit it.

  • Many of my song in my playlist have a red square in a circle

    Hello now80,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430
iTunes won't open or quits unexpectedly
You see this alert while syncing: "... cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
If you see the above symptoms or other unusual behavior, you can disable any third-party plug-ins by opening iTunes in Safe Mode:
    OS X: Hold down Option-Command.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync.
    Have a nice day,

  • Red square in red circle cannot play songs

Since I downloaded the latest version of Itunes on my Ipod Touch 4 several of my songs will not play, they have a red square in a red circle.  I cannot since these items I have tried several times.
I have lost over 100 songs and the list keeps growing as I try and play songs they show this red square and skip to the next available song.

    Just to reiterate Mara120
The issue is that your iphone/ipod can no longer read the song information, soyou need to "convert the id3" tags to "Reverse Unicode" so the itunes can read it .
So, in itunes, list all songs and then select all songs - right click - select "convert the id3" - select "Reverse Unicode"
Then re-sync your device. That is it. It takes about 5 mins. No more red-dot EVER!!!
There are many stupid "simple" answers on this thread. Most assuming that you have bought all your songs from itunes or that you are an idiot (i.e. your device is full or you didn't "select the song to be on your device in the first place"). Other solutions are hit and miss. This solution is definitive.
Thanks to  Mara120 for being so logical and writing the original post (Jul 25, 2014 4:13 AM)

  • HT4528 I have 50 GB of music on my Iphone however when I go to play something there is a red square with a circle around it. When I press play it just fades or shuffles through all the songs from that artist

Anyone know what is going on with this icon when I go to play songs that are supposedly on my device they are not. I synced my whole music library and the songs are not there. Sometimes if igo to play an artist it just shuffles through the songs but doesnt play any of them.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Red circle red square iPhone

I have the exact same problem as described in various iposts: red square in red circle on iPhone.  It appears to be only for songs that I imported from CDs.  I have tried restoring, etc. but they still appear.  The songs are in iTunes and play in iTunes but they will not play on iPhone.  In addition, when I sync, the process never completes - step 5 of 5 continues and does not end (Waiting for Items to Copy).  I have latest ios and iTunes versions. I do not back up to the cloud but do have local backup.  Would appreciate any suggestions.

  • New music will not sync to my iPhone 4, and music that was previously synced but was added to library through a CD will not play and has a red square and is grayed out.

I use iTunes on my family iMac, my iTunes, I believe, one update below the current software any my iPhone is on iOS 7.0.3. Music purchased through iTunes syncs correctly and will play properly. Songs that I have obtained through CD's, however, are now grayed out and have a red square with a circle around it. When I click on the song, it will cycle through my library until it can play a song. iTunes will also not restore songs that I have removed from my iPhone but are in the cloud. Is there any possible way to fix this issue? Everything has been working fine until iOS 7 and the new version of iTunes. Thank you for your time!

I am so relieved to hear that I am not the only one experiencing this! However, I am sorry to hear you are going through this as well. Lucky for me I am upgrading to a 5s which will be sent to me on Wednesday. I did stumble upon an article with tips on how to downgrade back to iOS 7, but I am EXTREMELY apprehensive about doing that myself. Here's the article link if you want to give it a go:

  • On my music app there is a red square with a red circle around it!

It is very annoying, since it is on most of my songs. i'm not very happy or impressed. i have took all of my music off my iphone and put it all back on, and still no luck.
    any help?

Not sure if there is anyone out there that hasn’t yet found a fix?
    …but I found one!!!!
    THE BLAH BLAH BLAH…
I tried many different suggested ways of getting my phone to sync music.
I kept clicking on songs i wanted to listen to on my iphone, and it would just zoom through my lists playlists and only play 'itunes purchased’ music and leave all other music greyed out and/or with a small red square inside a circle.
After weeks of fuming about how crappy and stupid apple is becoming... and scrolling through lots of posts on how to fix it and this is what worked, instantly, with bugger all effort/time/syncing.
    THE SOLOUTION
go to 'Music' button on your device... (in my case iphone 5).
Make sure your phone is on the inital screen, where down the bottom, it has 5 sub options...
    -Radio
    -Playlists
    -Artists
    -Songs
    -More
"More" is what you are after... so click/navigate to "More", then go down to the "Shared" option.
    there were two options listed under the 'Shared Tab' within 'Music' on my iphone;
    Ashley's iPhone
    and
    Ashley's Library
My phone was set to "Ashley's iPhone"  - (there was a tick next to this option)
I instead selected and changed my shared setting to ; "Ashley's Library"
And it worked. INSTANTLY. Smple as that.
(please note; not sure if it makes any difference, but fyi my phone is using ios 7.0.6. )
Well this has been my first post, ever. And I REALLY hope this works for anyone still having this infuriating issue... life with out tunes is agony (it was for me). Hence this post.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Red square beside songs, preventing play

I have a 5th generation iPod touch, and whenever I select a song to play and it will either play that song or skip it and I will get a red square like it's loading from the cloud, the song becomes faded and it won't play. It has done this with a majority of my songs so that I can't play them at all. I hooked my iPod up to my computer last night and when it finished syncing, I was able to play all my songs, so I thought I fixed the issue, yet I went back on it today the same thing happened. I have everything up to date and this is very frustrating. I phoned and they said my warranty has expired and I'd rather not spend 35 bucks if someone can help. Much appreciated.

  • Syncing music on iPhone 4S not working - red circle with red square for all non iTunes purchased tracks and albums

    I have an iPhone 4S running iOS7.
Every time I sync all non purchased via iTunes music can't be played with a red circle with a red square next to it.
I need to update software , backup and move phones but I don't want to do so until I get this problem rectified.  When I try to run new software I get a message saying items have not synced and I may lose them if I carry on with download.
Does anyone have any ideas or experience?  How to get my music to sync on the phone and subsequently ho two ensure that I carry this music with me to the new iPhone i'e don't lose it on iTunes or to 'the cloud'.
    Thanks

This has worked for many people according to feedback I have gotten:
Un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

  • Red circle with red square inside- what does it mean in iTunes next to songs?

I can't play songs on iTunes that have a red circle with a small red square inside it. What does the symbol mean and how do I get rid of it. I have one iPad 2, one iPhone 5 and one ip[hone 6 plus bit only one iTunes account and one computer where all the songs are stored. The same song will play on the phones but not the iPad!! I really don't want to keep upgrading the software cos really it just creates more problems!!

! = iTunes cannot find the file that contains the media associated with the entry in the iTunes database.  iTunes itself does not contain your music, it just uses a reference to play a file on your computer.  Something happened to break that link.  Many reasons. Your computer may be having directory problems (directory = computer's database of what files it thinks are on the drive).  You may have renamed a folder or file  or moved a folder or file related to iTunes.
When you try to play the file iTunes will ask you if you want to associate a file with that entry.  You can answer yes and look for the file that you think it should play.  If the file is truly missing then you have bigger worries because who knows what else could be missing - the whole reason for computer backups and periodic maintenance.

  • Red square with circle, grey exclamation point AND iTunes won't sinc new songs?

I have just upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3 and for some reason my music on my phone will not play. Every song comes up with a red square with a red circle around it and simply will not play. Looking on iTunes now - every time I try to play a song a grey exclamation point with a grey circle pops up next to the song and again WILL NOT PLAY!
I've heard that it iTunes might be having trouble finding the source of the song (which its never had trouble doing before) so I deleted one song and tried to replace it back on there only to find that it is now not sincing new songs either! This new song is very light grey in colour and has the spotted circle next to it.
I don't even know where to start fixing these problems.
    Additional Information:
I have my phone set up to Sinc only checked songs and videos.
I drag and drop my songs into the 'On this iPhone' heading rather than sicing the whole thing as I share this computer with my brother.
Am I going to have to downgrade my iOS back to what it was?
I really hope someone out there can help!

[[UPDATE]] SOLVED - I've restarted both my computer and my phone and tried to re-drop in that one song that was coming up light grey. It's now sinced and playing on Itunes and is the ONLY song on my phone. No more exclamation mark or red square.
Looks like I'm going to have to delete all the songs and replace them into my itunes.
    *sigh*
Thank you Apple for this smooth, easy going update. Much appreciated.
