IPhone killed my MBP USB Port

Got my shiny new iphone 3g, went home, plugged it into my shiny new MBP. I plugged it into the USB port nearest the power supply. Right away, the iphone started intermittently connecting/reconnecting. I jiggled the cable, checked a few things, seemed to be the phone. GREAT. So i plugged it into the other usb port, nearest the power button. No problems.
The problem is, now the USB port nearest the power plug won't work with anything. It intermittently disconnects external drives, USB jump drives, etc. Makes it impossible for using anything -- even a mouse.
Anyone else experience this? It's 100% re-produceable, i plug the iphone it, it attempts to do the 3 hour backup (sarcasm there) and then beeps as it disconnects. Then iphoto opens again as it re-connects. Ad-infinitum.

I've been using my google-fu to investigate.
It's not limited to just me, it seems pretty wide-spread. It also appears to have something to do with iPhone crashing the usb2.0 driver on the MBP. I have a genius bar meeting tomorrow night, i can hobble around it till then.

How do you unplug the iphone from the Mac USB port safely?

Click on the little up arrow next to the name of your iPhone to eject the iPhone first.  Then just pull out the USB plug, grasping it by the plastic end of the plug, not the cable.

  • 2010 i5 MBP USB Ports Not The Same?  Griffin iMic Issue

I have a 2010 15" i5 MBP. I got one of the white iMics and it works fine on the port thats closest to the screen. However, when I plug it in to the port that's closer to the SD slot, it doesn't work. Under the audio settings screen, I see the iMic under Input, and the slider is to the right, but the VU meter doesn't register anything. However, when it's in the USB port by the power adapter, it works as it should.
I have read that certain model MBPs have USB ports that are not the same, and some people have problems with programs like Serato when it's plugged into the front port. Traktor and Serato have even mentioned that on the MBP there is one "good" port and one "bad" port.
Curious if anyone else noticed this. Again, it seems to only affect 2010 i5 MBPs.

    Hi WebBrowser2,
As I understand your query its not a single doubt you are having at all, actually it’s a bunch of multiple doubt you are carrying here in your mind allied to Mac Book Pro (USB Ports are not working).  There might be various reasons behind- not working of USB ports in Mac Book Pro, as you already had searched out various ways to fix all your issues. A few months ago, I faced the same issue as my USB port was suddenly stopped to respond, then I also tried to find various ways to get rid of this issue, and I found an informative blog link which has fixed this issue and make me tension free.

And I am hoping- it will assist you in the same way as it assists me.

  • New iphone 3.1 cuases usb ports to freeze when connected

    Hi,
is anyone else having this problem? I installed the new 3,1 on my iPhone 3Gs. No real issues with that.
But now whenever I dock my iPhone with my computer it causes my mouse to freeze. So I disconnect the mouse from the keyboard and then it causes the keyboard to freeze. So I disconnect the keyboard and all is okay again, (leaving the iPhone connected) however it then randomly freezes the mouse and the keyboard again.
Anyone come across this/knows how to solve it? I'm using Snow Leopard, and no other USB ports freeze. Just the mouse and the keyboard.

Yeah, 3.1.2 here and everytime I connect it to my PC (Windows 7 with 8 USB ports and no hub). it screws up the mouse (and I did try all ports) . After syncing my Iphone, I just pull the mouse cable and reconnect and all is fine. Luckily I don't sync more than once a day
Definitely, 3.1.2 OS (what I am using) has problems with USB.

  • Iphone does't recognize usb port

iPhone 4 just updated to latest version of operating system. It has gone into recovery mode. When I plug in the iPhone via usb port, the iPhone shows a picture of trying to connect my usb cable to iTunes. I've tried swithcing cables, usb slots and computers but the connection error remains. The iPhone doesn't recognize the usb connection.

Your connection on the bottom of the phone is most likely dirty. You can carefully clean it with a cotton swab and some isoprpal alcohol

  • Is it safe to charge an iPhone overnight using a USB port on a surge protector?

I just bought a new surge protector that has two USB ports built in. I know it is safe to charge an iPhone using the USB ports on a computer, and it is safe to charge an iPhone using the supplied power adapter. However, I have heard that the supplied power adapter (the brick) that comes with the phone automatically stops charging the iPhone when it reaches 100%. I normally leave my iPhone charging overnight. So my question is, would it be safe to charge my iPhone overnight via the built in USB port on my new surge protector? Or should i continue using the power adapter that it came with?
This is the surge protector i purchased.

Yes, it's safe. The phone is actually what stops the charging.

  • How to fix the Superdrive from killing the keyboard usb port?

IF the Superdrive is plugged into the iMac USB port, the keyboard USB port indicates that there is not enough power for the thumb drive or other device.  If the Superdrive is unplugged, all is well on the keyboard USB port.
    Any fixes for this?

Hi there, I have the same problem on a 27" iMac: when the superdrive is connected to a USB port on the Mac, the USB ports on the keyboard seem to lose all power, even for a USB key.
I called Apple and they told me to reset SMC, PRAM and VRAM but to no avail.
I will try with another keyboard as they seem to say it could be a keyboard problem (which a very much doubt...)

Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

    Hi joy145,
If you are having issues syncing and would like to manually manage your content, you may find the following article helpful:
Apple Support: Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you are still having issues or continually prompted to erase and sync, you may want to try restoring your iPhone to factory settings before moving your data over (either via syncing or manually):
Apple Support: Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
(Note: Restoring iOS software deletes all your data and content from your device, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar info.)

  • My iPhone 5 Bricked after plugging it into the USB port on my AT&T car charger

I plugged my factory USB cable from my iPhone 5 into the USB port on my AT&T car charger and it killed the iPhone 5 dead. I guess I thought since Apple is making a 30 pin converter and that all of my other apple products work this way that it should work...I guess I was wrong!

    Not Charge

You need an AV adapter and then you can connect via HDMI

  • Can i use an old car charger with a usb port to charge my iPhone 5s?

Can I use an old car charger for a not smart phone to charge my iPhone 5s through the usb port?

    Usually you can!
check if the specification of charger (USB output) is 5V (very important) and at least 500mA (more power like 1000mA --> 1A allow you to charge greater devices like iPad)
But personally is not good idea, because in short/long time can damage or reduce the life of battery of your iPhone/iPad etc.
    Bye

    Hello null.
I have OS Mavricks installed on my MBA 2013 and I have the same issue with my iPhone 4s. I noticed that when my iPhone is charged about 60% or 61% and above it connects normally without any issues, so the solution at the mean time is to charge it to that percentage and above and then connect it, Weird!

  • Can I charge my iPhone using the airport express usb port?

I want to place an Airport Express in the kitchen to extend my audio system (using Airplay) and wondered if it could double as an iPod/iPhone charger via the USB port.

Probably not. Don't know about iPhone 4 or iPod, but with an iPhone 3G, it will appear that the iPhone is "charging" initially, but the charging indicator will turn into a "plugged in" icon after a moment or two indicating that the iPhone is no longer charging.
