IPhone location tracker - still a security flaw?

I hear a lot about a security flaw in the iPhone OS, allowing others to track the location of my phone without my consent and with no straightforward way to protect myself.  On the internet, I see semi-legal app's offered, said to track any iPhone, "just enter the phone number".
First - is this still true?  I have updated to the latest iOS5.
If not, what are the settings I need to be aware of?
If yes, has Apple announced a plan to plug that security flaw?
Short of jailbraking my phone and installing unauthorized software - what can I do about it?
/Lars

There is not, and never was, a security flaw in iOS that allows or allowed others tot track the location of the phone.
The "apps" you see are generally bogus. They are "joke" apps. They can NOT do what they appear to do. It's simply not possible.
... unless ...
If the phone is jailbroken, tracking apps can be installed. If your phone is not jailbroken, you have nothing to worry about. The only way anyone could track the location of your phone would by by accessing your iCloud account and using Find my iPhone. So long as you keep your password secure, this isn't an issue.  Oh... and Find my Friends if you've agreed to share your location with someone.

  • IOS 7.03 security flaw

There is still a security flaw in iOS 7.03 even after update on iPhone 5s. If you have control centre activated on the lock screen, press the home button while on standby, slide the control centre up and open, switch the torch on and off and the repeatedly press the home button. You'll be into your iPhone 5s without entering the passcode or using the finger print scanner.
Not good enough for a £500+ product. This needs rectifying immediately.

  • If i turn location off on my iphone can it still be tracked

if i turn location off on my iphone can it still be tracked???

What do you mean "tracked"  and by who ?

  • If I have both my iPhone and my iPad set up on the Find iPhone App, and I disable location services on my iPhone, will I still be able to track my iPad on this app?

If I have both my iPhone and my iPad set up on the "Find iPhone" app, and I disable location services on my iPhone, will I still be able to track my iPad from my iPhone by using this app?

iWork is universal, so it will work full-res on the iPad. This is true for any app which has the plus sign symbol (in the App Store in iTunes it will say "This app is designed for iPhone and iPad".

  • IPhone 3G Location Tracking Fix?

    Hi,
I have just seen a new firmware has been released to stop the location tracking bug.
How do we stop this location tracking bug on the iPhone 3G?  iOs 4.3 stopped support for it - I hoped the 4.2.8 would install but no such luck.
    Chris

I really do agree with Chris on this, encrypting it on the pc or mac has nothing to do with apple still being able to track us. and turing off location tracking only stops the app's from tracking NOT APPLE
its not my fault that apple comes out with a new phone every year and stops supporting thier old ones after 2-3 years.
might as well just stop buying the iphone 4 and wait for the iphone 4gs in september,   yes the 4GS    apple is to lazy to really upgrade, just a new processor, just to make as much cash as they can
I know what my next phone will be         DROID

  • I am unable to delete music from my iPhone5 either directly or via PC.  On the iPhone the tracks disappear but the phone remains full and the data is still visible on the PC.  I am unable to manipulate the data in any way on the PC.

I am unable to delete music from my iPhone5 either directly or via PC.  On the iPhone the tracks disappear when swiping left and deleting but the phone remains full and the data is still visible on the PC. The music was installed on the phone from the backup of a previous model but with the addition of new tracks I am now unable to add more or update to the next operating system as the phone is full.  On my PC the music is still there and but the neither the delete function or any form of sorting/management on the music files is functional. Other Apple products work OK including previous phone, ipad.ipods etc Any advice/help available to get past this would be appreciated.

I think it is 7.1.1 - there was another update today which I've uploaded but it didn't make any difference. It's just the music libary on the 5 that's causing me problems.

  • Security Flaw on iPhone???

    Critical iPhone security flaw found
Fortify Software, a security firm, has uncovered a critical security flaw in the Apple iPhone which could lead to phishing attacks.
Because the iPhone only displays the first few characters of a URL in its Safari web browser, phishers could easily hide a fraudulent URL at the end of a link without the user even knowing it.
Even worse, the iPhone connects the browser and the phone in such a way that it may be possible to embed scam telephone numbers into a site to make the phone automatically dial the scam number.
Let’s hope Apple is working on a fix for this one because that is some scary stuff. Now, if you input addresses yourself and use bookmarks, the chances of being affected by this are relatively minimal. That said, watch out for strange emails and Google results — you can’t always trust that either.
Anybody read this? Any comments or thoughts??? Valid?

It's hardly a new flaw since disguising URLs in links has been common practice for some time. However, while the browser does indeed only show a limited number of characters from the URL being opened (more if in landscape mode than portrait) to get to the URL at all the user would either have to enter it manually, or encounter it in an email or web page where the full URL should readily be discovered.
It seems probable to me that over time, security holes will be found as in all accessible and discoverable devices on the internet. Based on experience with Apple and MacOS, I would have confidence that genuine weaknesses found in the iPhone will benefit from security fixes as expeditiously as possible.

  • Is location-tracking going to be fixed in iPhone 3G, latest iOS patch doesn't support my phone.

I have an iPhone 3G running 4.2.1 and I'd like to be able to patch the location-tracking without jailbreaking my phone. I noticed the latest patch that fixes the 4 and 3GS doesn't support my phone. Does anyone know (Apple?) if there will be a patch for my phone that is only 2 years old.

I don't believe there will be any further patches for the 3G. Us 3G owners seem to be out of luck.

  • On my iphone 4 it still wants me to answer the security question to improve the security

on my iphone 4 it still wants me to answer the security question to improve the security How do I fix this I have been doing this for the past 5 days or so and it's bugging me!

It will be 3 questions no matter where you do it.  It's been quite a while since I did this myself, but as I recall this is what I did:
    Open iTuens on your computer
    Click Store>View My Account
In the pop-up window, verify that the correct Apple ID is shown, then enter your password and click View Account
At that point, I believe I was prompted to choose my security questions and provide answers.  Or perhaps I had to click Done on the bottom right first...can't remember.
If that doesn't work, try choosing Store>Sign Out and then Store>Sign In, provide your password and perhaps you will get the prompt then.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up. You can't use the FIndMyiPhone app  on the iPod since the app requires iOS 7
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.
    - Apple will do nothing without a court order

  • Will the icloud keep a record that the phone has been tracked or a record of the locations tracked by the app "find my iPhone"

Will the icloud keep a record that the phone has been tracked or a record of the locations tracked by the app "find my iPhone"

Not unless you placed a lost device in Lost Mode and it is detected as being online.  If so, it will show its current and previous locations on a map as shown at the bottom of this article: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0f0165.

The security of Apple's iPhones and iPads is being called into question after it emerged the devices contain a hidden file that tracks the owner's locations.

  • How can I turn off location tracking by Apple?

How can I turn off location tracking by Apple? Is is possible to roll the software back prior to Apple installing location tracking? I am very unhappy with this change by Apple. I know they probably included a reference to it in one of the user agreements, but this should have been clearly stated and offered a way to opt out. Anyway, any help on this would be appreciated.

Yeah, I do see your point. I personally feel perfectly safe using my iPhone wherever I go however I would consider that my usage is a lot less than the average user. I've had the phone for a year and have only made a total of 5 hours worth of calls and have only taken it out of my city one or twice. So for me I don't see any privacy concerns.
From reading the privacy statement though it seems that Apple are adamant that the collection of the geographical data etc is 99% personal information free. They use the term "non-personal information" and for that 1% where someone's personal information does somehow become mingled with their geographical location/movements etc Apple state that this information would be handled as though it was your credit card details or your social security number etc until such time as it's no longer combined.
"If we do combine non-personal information with personal information the combined information will be treated as personal information for as long as it remains combined."
But, I do agree with the fact that Apple really should have made us more aware of this. Instead we have found out through scientists and their research... that, coupled with the fact that no other smartphone collects this information hasn't helped either.
I will continue to use my iPhone as normal though... I am personally confident in Apple's commitment to privacy. I know not all share this view and that's fine. We all have our own perceptions of the implications of technology...
To answer your question about rolling back your software though that can be done. Might be a bit of a headache though and I'm not the best person to help with that. I'm sure there's some good information here though. Good luck!

  • IMessage password/Apple ID security flaw?

I'm still able to sign into iMessage on my ipad mini using an old password/Apple ID.... Why is this and how do I fix it

    Sorry for the old bump.
But my issue similar and a security flaw.  If I turn off imessages on my ipad, anyone can turn them on, enter the wrong password, and poof they work.
How is that that I can enter ANY password and imessages works?
Seems not secure at all.  If I go on my colleagues iphone, enter my apple id (my email - duh) and the wrong password, it works there too.
    How do I restrict this?
