IPhone lock-up, crash & rebooting issues?

Hi, All – I have the original iPhone with 2.0 software. Since the initial install and even after doing a restore on it, the phone has been crashing and rebooting intermittently. I am using AT&T service, and I have never attempted to unlock the phone or run arbitrary code on it, so these issues are baffling to me. Below is a brief list of what I’ve encountered. Again, the iPhone is crashing and rebooting, not the apps:
Press the “Home” button = intermittent crash, then reboot (might happen back to back, or as infrequently as 6 hours – no rhyme or reason)
Press the “Power” button = (same result as above)
Phone locked up when receiving a call, lit up & identified the caller, no ring or vibration then it rebooted. This has happened twice.
Phone locked up when receiving a text message. Noticed it as I heard an odd tone from my phone for a split second, then it crashed and rebooted and showed a text message on the home screen when it finished rebooting.
Also, I have had other problems where the phone didn’t crash or reboot – it just didn’t perform properly:
When receiving a call – display does not light; phone does not ring or buzz. Voicemail received from caller though call not noted in received calls list. Also, I have had a greater number of “Call Failed” problems, even with full cell signal in Denver, CO. This may be AT&T’s fault, but it seems fine after I shut down and restart the phone.
In general, my iPhone with 2.0 software seems a bit more laggy. Screen rotation from portrait to landscape isn’t as smooth and opening the SMS app seems to have a consistent 2-second delay regardless of if I have cleared out my text message logs or not.
Also, when I reboot the phone, more often than not it starts off at the “slide to unlock” screen instead of the home screen.
Regarding location services – My gripe is that it can’t be told to either:
Stay on all the time
Shut off all the time
Activate when needed, then shut off – just like in 1.1.4.
Now when I use an application that I allow to use location services, I have to manually go and shut location services off again or my battery life will suffer.
I have now removed all of the new applications from the phone, and am still experiencing crash/reboot problems. My guess is my phone is damaged somehow or the software I downloaded was somehow flawed during downloading or installation.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really like this phone, but I can't bring myself to buy the new 3G if I can't be certain I wouldn't have the same problems
Thank you,
Lynn

I have experienced this problem as well and it is intermittent to say the least. I have two other friends that have an i-phone as well, and when the phone crashed it stored a picture of the screen in the photo library of the phone. I thought that was a little odd as well. I have another friend that has not updated to 2.0 yet and does not seem to be having any problems at all. I would venture to guess that there is a problem with the update and that an update will be out sometime to correct the problem. If anyone knows of a way to correct the problem please post a fix for us.

  • 4900m crash/reboot issue

    I have a 4900m with IOS 12.2(53) SG2.
Over the past 6 months, there have been about 5 instances where the switch has rebooted itself.  Most of them occuring within the last few weeks. So it seems to be getting worse.
dumping the log data showed this at the end
    Jawa Crash Data:
    Interrupt Mask: 0xE100
    Interrupt: 0x2000
    Forerunner CRC Error
Is this telling me i am having possible hardware failures like RAM?

I have a report from a second crash.
    similar to the previous dump with a few exceptions;
    Machine Check Interrupt Count: 1c9910b
L1 Instruction Cache Parity Errors: 0
    L1 Instruction Cache Parity Errors (CPU30): 0
L1 Data Cache Parity Errors: 1c9910b
    Jawa Crash Data:
    Interrupt Mask: 0xe100
    Interrupt: 0x1000
The L1 info, is that related to CPU L1 cache?  It is looking like its a hardware issue not a software issue.
I found this on the 12.2 (54)SG release notes:
Parity errors in the CPU's cache cause IOS to crash with a crashdump file like the following:
    Switch# show platform crashdump
    VECTOR 0
    *** CRASH DUMP ***
    02/09/2009 10:10:30
    Last crash: 02/09/2009 10:10:30
    Build: 12.2(20090206:234053) IPBASE
    buildversion addr: 13115584
    MCSR: 40000000 <--- non-zero value!
The key pieces of data are "VECTOR 0" and a MCSR value of 40000000, 20000000, or 10000000.
Workaround: Enter the show platform cpu cache command to lanuch an IOS algorithm that
detects and recovers from parity errors in the CPU's cache. You will obtain a running count of the
number of CPU cache parity errors that have been successfully detected and corrected on a running
    system:
    Switch# show platform cpu cache
    L1 Instruction Cache: ENABLED
    L1 Data Cache: ENABLED
    L2 Cache: ENABLED
    Machine Check Interrupts: 5
L1 Instruction Cache Parity Errors: 3
    L1 Instruction Cache Parity Errors (CPU30): 1
L1 Data Cache Parity Errors: 1
    CSCsx15372
I get a similar return with non zero Parity errors.  Is the workaround saying that running the command "show platform cpu cache" will fix the errors? Or is that a temporary thing related to the IOS.
I am wondering if i should update the IOS to solve this or if the issue is really a hardware problem.
    Thanks

  • IPhone 5 app crashing, notification issue & black safari screen?

My iPhone is running the latest version of iOS 7.1.2. A few days ago my phone was not letting me send pics at all and any incoming pics I would have to tap to download. shortly after I wasn't receiving any texts at all. New iMessages would appear on my macbook but not on my phone. I did a reset it fixed the problem, however I am now having the same problem and more. The text app shows i have 8 unread messages, even when I don't have new texts. I tried deleting all text threads and the notifications are still there. I tried a reset again and it brought back all my old threads and didn't fix the notification issue. Now my mail and Facebook app both keep crashing and when i try to search anything on safari i get a completely black screen. Do I just need a new phone or how can I fix this?

What does this have to do with iPhones or using an iPhone in an Enterprise (corporate) environment?
Your issue is with the app developer(s).  Take the issue up with them.

  • My iPhone 4S has crashed 7 times. I hold down the home key and on button to reboot. I tried a restore but has crashed once since. Do I have a faulty phone ?

My new iPhone 4S has crashed 7 times ie the screen does not come back on when I press the home key. I hold down the home key and on button to reboot and it always comes back. I tried a restore but it has crashed once since. Is this right  ? Do I have a faulty phone ? Any suggestions ?

Does the screen come back on if you press the sleep/power button?
Have you tried powering down (hold sleep/power button and swipe red slider) then power back up?  Power cycling sometimes will clear problems.
If neither works, and you can get to an Apple store, have the genius bar folks try it out...they are very good about replacement if faulty.

  • TS4062 iphone crashes/reboots itself everytime i'm connected to wifi, is this possible?

iphone crashes/reboots itself everytime i'm connected to wifi, is this possible?

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • IPhone 4 intermittent crashes - Facebook app issue?

My iPhone 4 rarely crashed before Sunday. The only thing that changed was I installed the latest Facebook app (with the Places feature). Since then, the phone will intermittently crash at random. I've noticed it crashes while in Messages, Mail, and iPod. When it crashes, it returns to the homescreen and I'm able to re-launch apps as normal.
I notice this mostly in iPod, which I use a lot. While playing mid-song, iPod will crash. When I re-launch iPod, it will have returned to the beginning of the song that just crashed. At times it will crash in Messages while I'm composing a text. When I relaunch Messages, it returns me to the message stream I was in, but everything I have typed just before it crashed is lost.
Strangely, it hasn't crashed on me while in the Facebook app. Not sure if the app has anything to do with this?
After the crashing started, I upgraded to the latest version of iOS4, which I hadn't done yet. Didn't help. Have also tried numerous restarts, both hard and "soft."
Any ideas? Makes using the phone a painful process. Before the iPhone 4, I had an original iPhone that never had crashing problems like this.

The apps on my iPhone 4 have been crashing, as well. Tried all the restarts and reboots and nothing seems to help. The Best Buy app is what seems to crash on me a lot as well as games my son plays. Safari also crashes when scrolling down through long pages. Never had a problem before with iphone software. What was originally a minor annoyance is turning into an aggravating experience.

  • My iPhone 5c has crashed it won't come on it shows apple when reset but then sends a message up top about rebooting and turns red and has lines like race tracks please help me

My iPhone 5C has crashed when reset it turns red or sends a message on top and sometimes even looks like a race track running through the screen

Has it ever been jailbroken or otherwise hacked?

  • New iPhone 5 keeps crashing, help?

Okay, so I've just upgraded from my very solid 3GS (a bit slow albiet) to the brand new iPhone 5 which I'm very pleased with, I love it, especially since I've just got retina, Siri and all the rest of the stuff the 4+4S owners enjoyed. There is just a single complaint, the iPhone 5 keeps crashing, every couple of hours I will be doing something, browsing reddit, in messages, it doesn't seem to matter and it will bring strange lines down the screen and restart (I'm guessing it's some kind of kernal panic?) and sometimes springboard will just restart.
Is there any way I can find out what's going on, logs of some kind? Or is that all locked away safe from inexperianced users?
When it came yesterday, it was crashing every few minutes, I plugged it into iTunes on my Windows PC and started a restore, but my ENITRE PC froze up, which it hasn't done in months, is this a coincidence or is because the iPhone is plugged in? (communication issues with the phone perhaps?) - anyway, I did the restore and it is now crashing far less frequantly, every few hours as I said, but I could do to know why? I can't see it being a hardware issue, because it seems like iOS and springboard are just crashing out every so often....
EDIT: It's just crashed twice in the last 20 minutes, once when I opened Siri from the lock screen, and once while I was on the springboard... what on earth is going on??

Springboard just crashed... not sure how much of this is just verbose output... and how much means something, it's a long one (Sorry!) - Would it be worth reinstalling iOS again?

  • Latent OS Bugs in iPad OS 3.2?  - Crash/Reboot with Search & Photo Scroll

I now have an issue with 'Search iPad' causing a crash & reboot on my ipad. It will also crash/reboot when scrolling through my Photos. What I have found is that once you install somewhere between 850-900 Apps that this starts failing and is first letter search term sensitive. (i.e. So far I found the key first letter to search which seems to provoke the crash is: F, P, S. Other search terms starting with other letters may work.) The Photo Scroll crash/reboot I have not tried to debug yet but I only have 383 photos loaded right now.
Bottom line it looks like the same indexing bug in the iPhone OS 3.1.2 is also latent in in the iPad OS 3.2(7B367). Hopefully this, as well as the wifi & intermittent video playback crash problem will be fixed soon.
Is there a beta test code patch/fix for this?

    Hey, all -
Having the same problem, but there's a workaround. I know everybody wants an official fix, but you also probably want to see your photos in the meantime regardless.
Note that I don't know what to do about the problem with searching when you have 800+ apps installed. I didn't even think you could install that many. As far as I know, then, this only works for Photos (better than nothing, right?).
Here's what you do - it's actually really simple...
    1. Instead of scrolling down through your photos, select a photo - any photo - without scrolling.
    2. When the photo is loaded, look at the bottom of the screen. There should be what looks Ike a series of little boxes. These little boxes are your friend.
    3. Touch and drag along the strip of boxes. You'll notice that they're actually the universe's smallest thumbnails, and that they expand when you touch and drag (not unlike the OS X dock when you mouse over icons and they "magnify").
    4. Scroll along until you're getting to the photos you want to see. Then just let go. The Photo app will take you to that photo. Even if it's a photo you couldn't reach by scrolling down in the traditional fashion, you'll still be able to get to it.
    5. If you want to look at other "nearby" photos, you can use that thumbnail strip along the bottom again, OR you can just tap the back button to return to the album. Photos will return to the usual thumbnail view (the one that's crashing for some of us), but it will drop you off in the vicinity of the photo you just looked at. For example, if you followed the steps above and dragged your finger all the way to the right to load the last photo in your album, then the back button will return you to the normal thumbnail view, but you'll be looking at the last page of photos in your album.
I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, then just try the first four steps. It'll make sense to you after that.
I've been able to view all my photos since learning this little trick.
I've been meaning to plug my iPad in and use the app development tools to look at diagnostic information that'd help me understand why it's crashing. If I get around to it, I'll come back and post what I find. My guess is that, if you have enough photos, and if you're scrolling fast enough, the Photos app is using a lot of resources to load thumbnails without unloading the ones that have already scrolled off the screen. In other words, I think that quickly scrolling through a large library leads to the Photos app using too much memory, forcing a reboot (apps are supposed to be designed to respond to system warnings about low memory - if they don't respond to the warnings and continue to use up system resources, the system will sometimes reboot itself).
    Hope this helps

  • IOS 7.0.4 Update Causing my original iPad Mini to Crash / Reboot Several Times a Day

After running the 7.0.4 update on my original iPad Mini, now the device crashes / reboots randomly when I use it.

I'm having the same problem with my ipad w/ retina display. Updated to 7.0.4 on Thursday or Friday and since last night been experiencing blue screen and random restarts.
Until recently it seemed to be linked only to the 'clash of clans' app, but now it is happening on the App Store too.
I contacted apple this morning, after an unsuccessful attempt at complete restore and set up as new ipad. They advised to restore a pervious back up and delete the clash of clans game. Did this, and now I'm getting problems elsewhere which suggests it isn't a compatibility issue with the OS and game.
Also in the same boat as you as I got it on November 2nd, launch day, and out of warranty by 2 weeks. Hopefully they can sort this either by fixing a bug in the OS or repairing my device as it's served me well with no issues for the past 12 months.

  • Iphone 6 plus crashing

My Iphone 6 plus is in space grey and is 128gb i have owned it for one week. everytime i have it plugged in to the USB socket in my 2013 renault megane coupe it ends up in a crash re-start cyclical state that just keeps going even when i un-plug from the car - the same lead charges ok at home from the mains and on my pc. my iphone 5 charges fine in the car.
I have to reboot my hanset to make it stop.
i am running the latest up dated ios 8.1 but this appears to be a software issue related to the car?
I have seen similar issues on here.
I have an appointment with apple this Friday so hopefully it will get sorted?
Last dealings with Apple and 02 were a little annoying to be honest but see how it goes!

I did not have this issue for 2 weeks of ownership.  I changed a couple of things and my iPhone 6 plus starting rebooting.  I went back to my original settings and the reboots stopped.  Below is what I did, hopefully this helps.
1.)  Ensure you under 110 apps total on your iPhone 6 plus
2.)  Unchecked "sync this iPhone over WiFi" in iTunes (i think this is the issue!!!)
3.)  Select Automatically back up via iCloud
3.)  Ensure all apps have synced and loaded from any syncs
4.)  Ensure all audiobooks have synced too

  • IOS 7.0.4 crashing/rebooting frequently.

Since the 7.0.4 update, my iPhone 5 has been crashing/rebooting itself 5-6 times per day. It's become unusable and unreliable. I've done a full reset, to no avail.
It happens on many different apps (Facebook, Google Maps, Calendar, Evernote, to name a few).
Since a resest didn't help, any other ideas? If I can't get a resolution soon, I'll be picking up an Android phone and jumping ship even though I have hundreds of dollars worth of iOS apps. The phone has become unstable and unusable. (For example, I can't run Google Maps for more than 10 minutes before it'll crash and the phone will reboot, making it useless as a navigation device.)

    Hey there Gecko85,
It sounds like you have backed up and restored your phone from your backup and that has not resolved the instabilities you are having on the phone. I would next try setting up the phone as a new device, and re installing some of the affected apps to see if the issue persists without the backup installed.
First, backup your device to iTunes again just in case you need, or want to revert to it.

  • My itunes account shuts down for no reason.  It wont recognize my iphone and there is an issue with network connectivity and itunes.  I have already  reinstalled itunes and did a syste restore on my computer, firewall checked and virus scan done.  Ideas??

My itunes account on windows xp shuts down for no reason.  If even try to delete something from my library it shuts down.   It wont recognize my iphone and there is an issue with network connectivity and I can't connect to the store.  I have already  reinstalled itunes and did a system restore on my computer, firewall has been checked, itunes is ok on firewall and virus scan done.  Ideas??

Same problem. I can see the itunes store so not a problem with windows firewall. The account is active on my iphone so i know i am not locked out. I can connect the PC to my iphone so i know itunes is working ok. It is just logging into itunes on this pc which doesn't work. Only thing I can think of is that the email address I use for my apple id has been offline for a while and is working again now, I'm wondering whether this has been the case for others who are having this issue?

  • Crashes/reboots/restarts while on sleep

This thread is exclusive to people who have spontaneous crashes/reboots/restarts while their Mac is in sleep. (this is usually connected to having a USB external hard drive plugged in the computer while on sleep)
In simple words, you are experiencing this problem:
    1) You put your Mac to sleep
    2) You return to it after some time and you find it on.
    3) On screen you find this error message "Your computer restarted because of a problem." or similar, and in the report of the error message the Event is "Sleep Wake Failure" or similar.
If your Mac does not wake from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.
If your Mac is experiencing black screens and freezes while waking up from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.
This thread is a continuation to the “New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes” thread.
I’m trying to better understand this problem. Allow me to ask you some questions. After you answer the first 5 question, feel free to write freely in this thread. (as longs as you are pertinent to this issue)
Please answer this questions carefully. If we get enough people to answer, I will personally slap this thread on the face of every Apple employee I can find, so they will have to stop saying  "we never heard of this issue" and we can get a quick fix or a quick replacement if this is indeed an hardware issue.
PLEASE ANWSER THIS QUESTIONS BEFORE WRITING IN THIS THREAD FOR THE FIRST TIME
I suggest you copy and paste the questions below in your reply, and replace the text ANSWER with your answer.

    1. Which Mac do you have? (If you have this issue with multiple machines, list them here)
Macbook Pro Retina late 2013. 512Gb SSD, 16Gb RAM, 2.3Ghz core i7 with discrete GPU.
    2. When did the problem start? If you had Mountain Lion installed on this machine, did the problem start when you updated to Mavericks?
I purchased a 4TB WD MyBook and split it into two partitions with one of them being used for Time Machine. After that, I received the reboots during sleep.
The computer came preinstalled with Mavericks.
    3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?
No, I haven't had it replaced. I contacted Apple 4 days after the problem started. I had turned off PowerNap, but still had the problem. Apples asked me to disable Wake for Wi-Fi Network Access, and since doing that the problem has disappeared.
    4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?
Yes (before I turned off PowerNap and Wake for Wi-Fi)
    5. Does your machine crash/reboot even if you uncheck "Enable Power Nap" in Preferences, Energy Saver? (before answering this, check that you have updated OS X to 10.9.1 and that you have unchecked Power Nap in both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs in Energy Saver)
I have to have both PowerNap and Wake for WiFi disabled. If either is checked, the computer reboots. I've confirmed this with both 10.9 and 10.9.1.
    OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
    6. Do you have an external hard drive connected via USB? If yes, write the manufacturer name and model name of the drive. (example: Western Digital My Book)
Yes. Western Digital My Book 4TB. Split into 2 partitions.
    7. Do you have a network connected drive? (like Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme, or a NAS)
    No.
    8. Do you have Time Machine Enabled?
    Yes.
    9. Do you have Crashplan installed?
    No.
    10. How much time does it usually take for the first crash/reboot to happen, after you put the computer on sleep?
4 hours. Checking the console log, my computer wakes itself at 2 hours for Time Machine (even if PowerNap is turned off, which is why Wake for Wi-Fi needed to be disabled, even the drive wasn't connected over the network, which really makes no sense) and then on the second wake, it has the Sleep Wake failure. Then it proceeds to reboot every 2 hours after when it wakes for Time Machine.
    11. If you have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, do you have discrete graphics in it? (In other words: do you have an NVIDIA GPU? If you don't know this, go into the menu bar, click the apple icon, click About This Mac, Click More Info, in Graphics you should find written “NVIDIA GeForce”.)
    Yes.
